So I'm walking out of Haas after this tough OT loss to ASU, and I see KJ Roberts and Monty Buckley by the exit. Buckley is having a serious and somewhat loud conversation with Jim Knowlton. Knowlton looks extremely uncomfortable, and is trying to wiggle away. Knowlton says something like "A lot of Cal fans feel this way" and starts walking away. Buckley says. "No. You need to hear this" then continues to light into Knowlton. Very awkward, and I LOVED every second of it.

I will never forget Monty's massive dunk vs Furd and chicken walk away after landing.

* You sound so matter of fact stating you saw KJ and Monty…are we to presume they have been frozen in time for 30 years, that you have facial aging recognition software hard wired into your brain, that you are friends with them or that you are simply a sage like Mose Allison?

Monty Buckley pretty much recruited Kidd to Cal. What is he doing these days? Can we make him AD?

We presume he was talking about Cal's lousy coaching staff, right? I'd love to hear more from him and the other players, former and present. Knowlton does need to listen, for sure.

Gotta love Monte Buckley who had tons of heart and hit some big shots. Love to hear KJ Roberts and Buckley in the building. Knowlton is a clown and deserved to get an earful by a beloved former player who cares for the program, unlike Knowlton. Cal men play hard, have heart and deserve better than Knowlton and Fox. Time to Start over and erase the whole MBB COACHING STAFF, SUPPORT STAFF, boy do they all deserve to be fired.

FWIW, earlier this season I happened to meet a former big Cal basketball player as I was washing my hands in the bathroom in Haas during a game. he had some choice words (most about Fox) but also generally about the program. most of what he said would not pass the auto-filter on this site, if that gives you any indication

Everyone should be down at that exit giving Fox and Knowlton hell after every game.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

Bobby Hurley looks exactly the same. He hasn't aged a bit.

All the former players need to write a joint letter to knowlton basically telling him there was once a time that cal basketball was great and that he is single handily ruining the legacy they worked so hard to build.

It's still unclear to me if knowlton really understands what he's doing to cal basketball

Knowlton is a know-nothing. He is a hockey guy. He knows nothing about the revenue sports and probably thinks Cal basketball is just like Air Force basketball where he also sat smiling through 3 years of single digit win seasons doing nothing because, Air Force.

I saw KJ first, walking in the hallway by the concessions in the first half. It struck me that I had just seen his name somewhere, like mentioning on SM that he'd be in Berkeley. No shock that the ath. dept. made no effort to include him or Monty in any kind of video board moment.

Pete Townshend: "We'd like to carry on now, and play a song originally recorded by Mose Allison, who's really a jazz musician and I did read something on one of his record covers which said he was a "jazz sage."
Quite what that means, I don't know. Uh…"

Keith Moon: "He'll flavor chicken!"

Pete: "And we picked up quite a number of his songs; Eyesight to the Blind, which is on the Tommy album, and also this song, which I think has gotta be one of his best. It's one of his own compositions which he wrote when he was about forty."

Keith: "Teenager!"

Pete: "Just a mere teenager and he called it Young Man Blues. "

Knowlton is a know-nothing. He is a hockey guy. He knows nothing about the revenue sports and probably thinks Cal basketball is just like Air Force basketball where he also sat smiling through 3 years of single digit win seasons doing nothing because, Air Force.
Pickin' cherries. You might have written "single digit CONFERENCE win seasons", to be more accurate. In the 43 years that Air Force has been playing conference basketball, in the WAC or MWC, there have been only 3 Air Force teams to register "double-digit" winning conference seasons.

Overall, Air Force's BB teams under Knowlton's AD tenure won 5, 4, and 6 conference games, averaging 5 wins per year. And in those 43 years, there have been 27 AF teams who racked up fewer than 5 conference wins in a season.

Overall, in the Knowlton era, Air Force won 14, 12, and 12 games in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. In the last 43 seasons, there are only 6 Air Force teams who have won 14 games or more, and only 12 Air Force teams who have won 12 games or more.

Air Force obviously is not a premier college basketball program, or even an average one, with very little success to show for all its years of trying to compete in the sport. There have been a few good players: NBA Coach Greg Popopvich was a star playing for Air Force, and Tom Schneeberger played on the US Olympic team in 1978, and another player made it to the D League and is playing pro in France.

Military Academies are very handicapped when it comes to recruiting. There are height and weight restrictions. The maximum height for a cadet applicant is 6'-8". Entrance requirements are stiffer than Cal's, though Cal's acceptance rate is 11%, Air Force's 10%. A cadet also needs to be nominated by a senator or congressman, I believe. Graduates have been restricted from delaying their military service to turn pro after graduation. In 2019 President Trump issued an order to the Defense Department to rescind this requirement and allow cadets to delay service to play pro ball, but in 2021, the DOD denied a Navy cadet his request to delay service to play pro, and I heard that the DOD is being asked to write new rules rescinding the Trump order.

Knowlton had one of the best records of Air Force ADs as to basketball, and I suspect there was no pressure on him to do more than any AD prior to him. He had a very full plate. Did you know that every single cadet must take PE classes every semester? And did you know every single cadet is required to play a team sport? Either NCAA sports, Club teams, or Intramural teams. Isn't that all voluntary at Cal?

I think Cal hired him to concentrate more on the non-revenue sports, and maybe de-emphasize the revenue sports. Since the latter part of the Waldorf era, with the recruiting scandals, there has been a tug of war between those who want to emphasize academics and those who want to emphasize sports. Throw in Title IX, and the withdrawal of State funding, and you have big problems for any AD. Knowlton is just a pawn in the game, in my opinion. The power to change direction lays with Christ or those above her, the Regents, the Legislature, and the Governor.

And yet the Southern Branch (currently #1 in the conference) has not been restricted from having winning programs in basketball (or football). So maybe it is the chancellor and not the Regents, Legislature, or Governor.

Thought a decent amount about this.

1) Chancellors have been there longer. Chancellor Young was at the SOuthern Branch for 29 years. Over that time he successfully built up political power inside and outside the campus. Critically Young was DEEPLY involved in both Pac 8 and NCAA affairs. I can't stress more that this was critical.

2) The Southern Branch has active (for both good and bad) involved alumni that are professional basketball and football players. They DEMAND excellence. I can't even imagine Bill Walton making excuses for a coach at UCLA as he makes for Fox.....actually it would be EXTREMELY funny to go to the tape and hear what Bill had to say about, for example, Alford.

3) They are located in the area where 65% of the state's population is. Probably higher precentage of college age kids. Definately a higher percentage of AA college aged students. Now UCLA (and U$C) can't offer everyone but it is why our next coach MUST be able to recruit in SOCAL. That is where the prospects are.

4) There are variations in respect to campus culture. Anderson sees itself as much more applied and practical. Having a Medical school I think helps as well. Ditto the flim school. So unlike Cal, which always seems to have some tension with humanity departments that see themselves as the last great hope of liberal arts and science schools that are very much focused on phD production and basic research, there is enough of a critical mass at UCLA that is focused on "practical" aspects of education.

5) The success of Wooden just makes it problematic to come after athletics at UCLA with the knives out. It is frankly unimaginable to be that they would give rise to Barksy (or whatever that CompSci Prof is) or that he would get traction and a voice in their student publication.

Now that all said, UCLA did face a significant issue with the deficit. The hand wringing by the regents is over the fact that really the student athletes ARE going to suffer.

The celebration and excellence of the film and theatre schools at UCLA is an excellent point. Excellence in athletics is not substantially different, whereas at Cal it is seen more as a dichotomy or conflict between athletics and academics.

Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar…. UCLA is proud of its sports history and contribution to social Justice.

I saw Buckley in the concourse after the UofA game on Thursday. I wanted to say hi but he was in the midst of a convo with someone else. It could have been Roberts?? Monty didn't look happy so I'm not surprised he blew up on Knowlton 2 days later.

Monty cares enough to go to the games during a horrible period. He cares enough to call out JK in public. Thank you Monty!
