I think Cal hired him to concentrate more on the non-revenue sports, and maybe de-emphasize the revenue sports. Since the latter part of the Waldorf era, with the recruiting scandals, there has been a tug of war between those who want to emphasize academics and those who want to emphasize sports. Throw in Title IX, and the withdrawal of State funding, and you have big problems for any AD. Knowlton is just a pawn in the game, in my opinion. The power to change direction lays with Christ or those above her, the Regents, the Legislature, and the Governor.

And yet the Southern Branch (currently #1 in the conference) has not been restricted from having winning programs in basketball (or football). So maybe it is the chancellor and not the Regents, Legislature, or Governo
Thought a decent amount about this.

1) Chancellors have been there longer. Chancellor Young was at the SOuthern Branch for 29 years. Over that time he successfully built up political power inside and outside the campus. Critically Young was DEEPLY involved in both Pac 8 and NCAA affairs. I can't stress more that this was critical.

2) The Southern Branch has active (for both good and bad) involved alumni that are professional basketball and football players. They DEMAND excellence. I can't even imagine Bill Walton making excuses for a coach at UCLA as he makes for Fox.....actually it would be EXTREMELY funny to go to the tape and hear what Bill had to say about, for example, Alford.

3) They are located in the area where 65% of the state's population is. Probably higher precentage of college age kids. Definately a higher percentage of AA college aged students. Now UCLA (and U$C) can't offer everyone but it is why our next coach MUST be able to recruit in SOCAL. That is where the prospects are.

4) There are variations in respect to campus culture. Anderson sees itself as much more applied and practical. Having a Medical school I think helps as well. Ditto the flim school. So unlike Cal, which always seems to have some tension with humanity departments that see themselves as the last great hope of liberal arts and science schools that are very much focused on phD production and basic research, there is enough of a critical mass at UCLA that is focused on "practical" aspects of education.

5) The success of Wooden just makes it problematic to come after athletics at UCLA with the knives out. It is frankly unimaginable to be that they would give rise to Barksy (or whatever that CompSci Prof is) or that he would get traction and a voice in their student publication.

Now that all said, UCLA did face a significant issue with the deficit. The hand wringing by the regents is over the fact that really the student athletes ARE going to suffer.
UCLA is a blueblood for basketball. That carries a lot with fans and recruits.

Also, LA is a fun place to be with the weather, beaches, etc. I sometimes say, imagine SF if it had LA's weather and beaches.

Except the thing is....for the MOST PART - ULCA teams have usually at their core been built on SoCal talent. Not always. Not exclusively but usually. This year is sorta an anomoly - with Bona, Campbell and Bailey NOT being from SOCal. Jaime Jaquez Jr. is from Ventura County.

One thing I have NEVER understood in recruiting (honestly) is a guy like Jaquez - a top 100 player (barely but still) who has offers from Furd, UCLA, UTAH and USC _DOESN"T_ have an offer from Cal. IN an era where normal HS kids are applying to 12+ colleges I don't understand the downside of Cal offering as well and encouraging even an informal vist. Sure he likely will not pick your hat but what is the downside??

Where I think UCLA's Blue Blood Status comes into play is that it retains a strong connection to ALUMNI who went onto the NBA. Simply more talent. This increasingly is going to translate into NIL $$

I had to look it up, as my recollection was that we missed the tourney that year... and we did. With the team that beat Cincinnati (then 13th ranked!), we started 7-0, only to finish 13-14. An awesome start followed by a pretty miserable finish. I don't recall the specifics of that year in terms of that roller-coaster ride, but wow.

Anytime people say we can not get talent show this this or the fact that Monty had three (right?) conference POY. I honestly think BB is EASIER to recruit to Cal - in part because of the decline in NorCal football as mom's pull their sons.

Unfortunately, much of that swag was pilfered from fellow students' bookbags.

I'm actually kind of surprised at the love Monty still gets after that suspension. It's a good thing he was playing for the Bozoman. Any other Cal coach in recent memory would have likely booted him off the team.

The problem was Gardner, who couldn't defend at the point and was a master of the high dribble which got him picked clean fairly regularly.

I kid you not, I saw him play one game, turned to my father and said "That kid is going to be a problem." It was obvious that Gardner and his father thought he was a better player than he was.

We didn't get good until Gardner left (along with Bozeman) and Anwar McQueen went to the point. In truth, Braun's first team (96-97, I think) would have gone to the Final Four had Ed Gray not broken his ankle against Washington State, That team had all the pieces.

SF is looking more like LA every day, even without the weather and the beaches. Architecture, traffic jams, homeless out of control, streets a cesspool, same with crime, dwindling police force, ineffective government with irrelevant priorities. We are really good at digging up streets. My father used to say, "Son, if you want a job for life, get a job digging up San Francisco streets." With all of that and more we still aren't producing good basketball players any way you look at it, overall or per capita. Our heyday in basketball was from the late 1940s to about 1960. Very little since then. Today, basketball-wise, we are known only for our JC team, SFCC.

Yes, and if Tyrone Wallace and Jabari Bird had not gotten hurt, there are many here who said Cal might have reached the Final Four in 2016. Going back further, if Darrall Imhoff does not get the flu, maybe Cal wins the NCAA Final in 1960. Injuries or illnesses are really critical, more so in modern times, because they occur more frequently now than ever before.

You have said this before, but it can't possibly be true.

As a freshman Buckley played in 24 of 28 Cal games.

The next season he played 28 of 30 then 29 of 30 and finally all 27 as a senior.

As for 1960, it didn't help that we had another death struggle against Oscar R. and Cincinnati in the semis, whereas tOSU had a cakewalk against NYU.

It's possible the 2016 team could have gone deep without the injuries. In the tournament, Cuonzo's lack of a structured offense would have been less of a problem than in the regular season, because defense and athleticism predominate. Had we really gone to the Final Four, Martin would have gotten the huge contract here, and maybe he would still be here.
