Kind of like our departed 7 footer?
The departed 7 footer was a post player. I can't remember Cal ever having a 5 who was a shooter, but I only go back to the mid 80s.
Braun played Ryan Anderson at the 5 (with Boykin at the 4) and Amit Tamir at the 5 (with Famulener at the 4) despite having more traditional post players on the roster. Anderson and Tamir were both shooters.
But was Anderson typically a 5? Not that I remember. Tamir is right.
I think he was basically a 4, who we played at 5. We had the rugged Taylor Harrison his freshman year, but then he got injured and I can't remember what other bigs we had in RA's soph year. Cost Braun his job, in any event.
We had Devon Hardin, Jordan Wilkes and Taylor Harrison as 5s (also Kamp who Monty later played in the post) but Hardin got hurt his freshman year. Wilkes and Harrison barely played.
Lineups often included Ubaka, Knezevic, Randle, Christopher, Omar Wilkes, with Vierneisal, Theo and Boykin at the 4 with Anderson at the 5 in the two years we had him.
Anderson started all 66 games when he was at Cal. During that time, Hardin started 37. No other center had a single start, meaning Anderson was our starting center in 29 games and was on the floor as our center in many others.
