Did we fill out our roster? I see posts referencing Gus Larson and also showing him on the team roster but don't remember seeing an official announcement anywhere? Does that mean all of the other/recruits/transfer portal offers etc weren't successful?

It appears so.I wonder if Larson is a project. Not many stats.

Bio says he only played five games last season before injury. I'll bet he's got a good shot at petitioning to get that year of eligibility back.

I think it's highly likely (and I sincerely hope) that Larson is a PWO.

After he was officially added to Cal's roster, the staff has reached out to a couple transfers and an international player. Seems as though the staff is operating as though they have an open scholly.

Agreed. Bio says two years of eligibility, but I see three. I wonder why he transferred from Penn though? Ivy League seems like a great fit.

He wants to be the next Grant Mullins or Dwight Tarwater or Ryan Betley?

If he was a Grant Mullin that would be most excellent

I'll always remember Tarwater for 3 at the buzzer to take down UCLA

And if he can shot like Bentley on a catch and shoot 3 it would be a great pickup for a walk on (Bentley was a solid player when he wasn't asked to do too much or take difficult shots off the dribble)

The difference is they had degrees and were grad transfers. He was in Wharton and was trying to get PT in Ivy League play. His chances of getting into Haas and getting PT in the PAC will be less.

I recall that Betley shot well against the lesser pre-conference opponents who were a step slow. When confronted by defenders who forced him to rush his shot, his accuracy fell off dramatically. I'm not dumping on the guy - it's just the way it was.

Based on Larson's performance at Penn, I'll be pleasantly surprised if he gets into the rotation at Cal. Optimistically, since he plays essentially the same position as Madsen played, maybe the coach sees something in him that can be developed.

His performance was averaging less than one point per game for both of his seasons. Something would have to go wrong for him to play. Because there is something wrong with me, I found a video of him scrimmaging on the internet. He can shoot but does not move well. He is not like Madsen, he is a high post 5 rather than a low post 4 like Madsen.

Often a good move to begin with a self-deprecating disclaimer like that! I actually have three t-shirts printed with something similar, which have probably gotten me out of innumerable jams over the years.

Braun played Ryan Anderson at the 5 (with Boykin at the 4) and Amit Tamir at the 5 (with Famulener at the 4) despite having more traditional post players on the roster. Anderson and Tamir were both shooters.

Oh man, I still wish I coulda seen Ryan Anderson at Cal for four years, with Randle and Christopher (and Theo and Boykin)... and Monty as coach. That year we won the conference regular season, maybe we could've made a deep run in March Madness.

Some, yes, when he was on the floor with Grigsby for example, but I think Marks mostly played the 4, with Yogi Stewart, Shareef, and then Fransico Elson as the primary 5s while he was at Cal.

The same frustration I sensed when Kidd went to the pros in 1992. That was the year Shareef Abdur-Rahim came into the Cal fold. Can you imagine the two of them together with the rest of the supporting cast? They would have wreaked some serious havoc.

I still lament our lost 2005 National Championship season with Aaron Rodgers at QB, Marshawn Lynch at RB and Desean Jackson at WR.

I think he was basically a 4, who we played at 5. We had the rugged Taylor Harrison his freshman year, but then he got injured and I can't remember what other bigs we had in RA's soph year. Cost Braun his job, in any event.

Not to be too pedantic, but I'm pretty sure Kidd left in '94, and shareef arrived in '95. There was one year (the '94-95 season) between them. That was the year that Tremaine Fowlkes and Jelani Gardner were freshman, I believe.

We had Devon Hardin, Jordan Wilkes and Taylor Harrison as 5s (also Kamp who Monty later played in the post) but Hardin got hurt his freshman year. Wilkes and Harrison barely played.

Lineups often included Ubaka, Knezevic, Randle, Christopher, Omar Wilkes, with Vierneisal, Theo and Boykin at the 4 with Anderson at the 5 in the two years we had him.

Anderson started all 66 games when he was at Cal. During that time, Hardin started 37. No other center had a single start, meaning Anderson was our starting center in 29 games and was on the floor as our center in many others.
