We stared down the juggernaut Tommies and whupped them so bad they went back to Thomasville with their tom-toms between their legs. Our Golden Bears are hardly intimidated by some Miners.

There's a Grinch joke in here somewhere, but I can't take the time to find it.

I'm just wondering how many of the 72 points were scored by Science and how many by Arts.

Can someone explain the monetary incentive to running the SoCal challenge and how this thing makes money and for who? I don't get it all, Cal plays at 9:30 tonight, the last of 4 games. The game is on CBS Sports Network, not a prime channel and if the game was at Cal, it would still be on tv. I'm guessing not many will even watch. The earlier games are on FloHoops, whatever that is. And it's being played in a high school gym that holds about 2,000 and given the teams in this thing, it might not be full for any of the games. I doubt it will even be full tonight with a strong Cal alumni network in the area given the time. I get the Maui invitational with regular top 10 teams, but not this thing.

And then to top it off, how can Cal possibly make more money by playing SDSU there with 2,000 seats versus playing down here and playing at SDSU's arena that holds 12,000+ (and might be at least 50% to 75% full)? It's tough to play against SDSU in their arena, so maybe that was a consideration, but I doubt the money can be more. I'm going to travel up for the game with one SDSU friend (skipping the other games), but he's the only one out of about 20 SDSU alums that I asked who is going, the rest just shrugged and said "too far."

My understanding is that this is not a seasonal money making tourney, but a one-time honor an old coach friend (the coach of the highs school hosting the games, maybe?).

Not sure where I picked that up, but that is today's trick being played on my memory

Nice find...good luck to Mr. Barnes, I admire his confidence (maybe not his logic). They are posting on twitter some early hoops action from CSUB v Sac State, I see maybe 20 people on one side of the stands, hmmm...will be interesting to see how many Cal fans show up tonight.

I got no idea where the hell San Juan Capistrano is. All I know is that I'm pretty sure it's in California, somewhere south of me (Bay Area). Also, something about swallows...

(not asking for help here; I can google as well as the next guy)

Zero idea why we're playing there (gonna read that link, though, maybe... thx Chabbear).

It's the best tournament we could get into, apparently. Doubtful anyone was calling us after the last few Fox beauties. Lucky to be playing in anything at all this year. This is a must win, but I don't feel confident at all. Also, tipoff at 12:30am eastern time is a no go.

It's gonna be a lot later than 9:30pm/12:30am, the prior game is starting at 7:30 so even if that finishes in a tidy 2 hours, there will be 30 minutes of warm-ups after. Watch the first game go into OT! Not sure why they started a double-header so late, maybe the SJC-HS volleyball team has court rights.

A few Cal alumni who were in Yorba Linda to watch the Stanford Cal game told me they would be attending. I will also be there cheering on my Bears. Glad it is here. I don't have to fly up to Northern California to see them play. Those that get there at 6:30 can enjoy the free taco truck that will be available to alumni. no host bar.

In 4th grade and then walking home from school with a buddy theorizing how the Russians probably whacked'em and that we would be incinerated in an atomic war in a day or two (similar to our discussions during recess in 3rd grade during the Cuban Missile Crisis).

In my 4th grade class, the belief was the VP did it so he could become the President. I then remember the tv being filled with news about the President and the assassination for days on both channels.

That and the December 1964 flooding of the north coast of California stand out in my memory from elementary school.

Idiot commentator on CBSN just called Fox a "very good coach." Seriously? They're playing in a high school gym, let's skip this "Challenge" next year.

He also called Cal, Stanford. It is late for everyone.

I'll forgive him for the Stanfurd gaffe given that it's Madsen's lineage. But he should know that the 35 people bothering to watch this at 10:30 pm believe Fox is maybe … no, definitely… the worst coach in Cal history (Pac-12 history?!!) So coming up with "a very good coach", no sir, please exit the building and never come back to broadcasting.

Well, it wasn't pretty, but at least scrappy. I watched it early this AM with a "Texas Western" ( remember the NCAA winners back in the day) friend. UTEP played scrappy defense which I wished we could play and in the first ten minutes I told him I thought they would win by 12-18 points. But they scraped and scrapped and stayed in the game. Most positives were never quitting, hanging in there, the play of Nelson, and the 3 point shooting of Cone (not his TO play). I do think this will bode us well as the season unfolds as UTEP fought for everything and put amazing pressure on us. We folded to it all to often, but should learn from it.

And we need to remember three first string or maybe 2 1/2 first string players out. Need not go over negatives as they were glaring. But no give up was nice.
