Well I guess he's playing the point, which seems odd.

Kevin hart doesn't contribute anything for this team.

My god half this team plays like they are stone.

Shots no longer falling. Turnovers continue. Down eight with 4:00 to go.
Going to bed shortly.

Jealous of UTEP's tenacity on defense, that's what's killing us right now. If we could show the same hustle and get Tyson firing we might have something.

Agree. UTEP playing with their hair on fire. Cal is soft and weak with the ball. Plus UTEP killing on the ft line.

Seriously, our players look slow, sluggish, clueless at times, no sense of urgency.

It's like they play with a defeated mindset.

some of the NIL additions just are awful…

They want it more than us. Larson giving us more than Newell. Really missing Celestine. I hope we are able to put it together before the conference season starts. Okafor gave us good minutes but fouled too much. Turnovers are the story again if we end up losing.

That's what I'm most surprised about this season, a Madsen-led team doesn't seem to have the fire in the belly on the court. That's all Madsen had in his career, the Mad Dog mentality and grit, so I thought he'd pass it on to his players. Not so far, but the jury is still out. I'm a bit worried about an embarrassment on Sat vs SD State. That team is too good and if they play like they did tonight it will be a blowout.

Why are they dragging this game out? To torture us? They had, like, a 5 minute TO with 1:21 left...

51 fouls combined in this game. Three Bears fouled out. Aimaq, Newell and Okafor.

Kennedy is the leader. I'm hoping things change once he is back. Right now, this is not a good team. AND, they aren't playing with enough intensity.

UTEP deserved it.
Cal did not. A very disappointing effort (lack of) by the Bears.

Well, UTEP got 36 free throws and played great defense. I'm somewhat surprised we got that close.

How did UTEP get in such great shape without everyone getting injured in practice?

Given how last year went I doubt there was much strength and conditioning work being done, seemed to show tonight on a lot of plays

bearister, if you were able to go to sleep, good for you, because I feel like I just had a 2 1/2 hour root canal.

Bottom line for this game: We sucked yesterday when it started... and we sucked today when it ended.

Good. Night.

That was one of the worst played game I've ever seen. What the hell is going on?

From now on madsen should just be playing guys who want to play hard. This is ridiculous

I'm not sure how fair everyone's being here. Cal's missing their starting PG, who played really well the last game before he went down. They're missing the guy who competed with Tyson in camp as their best 2-way player and likely starting 2 in Kennedy. They're missing one of their best shooters and depth players in Celestine. They're a radically different roster under a new staff with a revolving door of healthy personnel so far.

They lost to a team that seemed to be pretty good, though we'll see as the season progresses. They outshot UTEP 49 to 38% and 35 to 28% from three. They outrebounded them 31-30 despite UTEP being a fairly long athletic team that crashes the boards well. They fell behind several times but kept battling and tied it with seconds left.

Lots of bagging on Cone but he scored 15 (tied with Tyson for 2nd most) and hit half their 3's including the game-tying shot at the end.

The turnovers are bad, no question. But it's no coincidence that their two worst turnover games were the games their starting point guard has been out. Tyson's had 13 the last two games and he only averaged 1.7 per game last season so I assume that number will come way down.

Absolutely hated the loss to Pacific and the one to Montana State was not good either. But until they get back their injured players and play together a bit, they're going to lose some games like this one tonight. Doesn't mean Madson sucks or they aren't trying or clueless or not playing hard enough or without passion.

What we're looking at his head and shoulders above what we saw under Fox. I'm willing to take some lumps and see how they come together.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. If a team just gets run over due to a lack of talent, so be it. That clearly wasn't the case this game

What I saw was lazy pass after lazy pass. Absolutely no effort to protect the ball. No effort to go after loose balls. A failure to win a single 50/50 ball. Lazy defense that resulted in foul call after foul call.

I get they're shorthanded. Fine. But play hard. Care about protecting the ball. Don't just throw it around with zero care in the world. That's all about effort and focus and "want to."

Utep is not that good of a team. I'm sorry…but there have been past Fox teams that would've won that game.

I have to give it up for the Bears to tie the game after the crazy amount of turnovers and losing our two big men down the stretch. The 3 by Cone then the make by UTEP was kind of indicative of the first 5 games -- we get way too loose on defense after a make. I saw Jalen Cone by the basket on the last possession guarding no one. We just have a lot of fundamental issues. Hopefully we clean all that up soon.

That said, a lot of good things, which is headlined by our resiliency in tying the game. Jalen tied it this time, whereas he had the same shot and couldn't v. Montana State. That was freaking awesome. Also good minutes for Larson, Brown and Okafor. Larson looks like he's earned more minutes in the rotation. Dude will be a plus player and he also had three clean blocks. It was Brown's best game. Okafor played some gritty minutes, albeit he was a fouling machine.

Overall I am pretty amazed that we hung in there. This will bode well for our roster depth as more guys get more minutes. But we really have to get back to some fundamentals, and that's even with Askew, Kennedy and Celestine back. I drank some caffeine to stay up, and now I am jacked. Cal sports is killing me on many levels. Go Bears!

Ok now you're going to make me say somewhat positive things about Fox…which I hate. But in his first season, they were not very talented but were fundamentally sound. Almost immediately. And he had some decent wins.

Fox failed for several reasons (mainly a complete failure to recruit) but his teams were much more fundamentally sound than this.

I get that this is a whole new team of players and there's going to be growing pains. But you can't just throw the ball straight to the other team. You cant continually reach, bite on fakes, etc.

Back from game. The fifth on Daws looked … questionable.
The last two made three pointers were the only three pointers made in the second half
Bears fave up too many offensive rebounds and second chance points.
Oddly Cal was whistled for 28 and UTEP 26 but it was when whistles blew that was difference as UTEP was 30-37 to Cal's 20-26.
The stats, to me, just dont look as bad as the game felt watching it.
Good Cal crowd with energy.
Just a frustrating game to watch.

Authoritarianism can be very effective in the short run, but always fails in the long run. Sure, the team looked disciplined quickly under Fox, then got worse year after year as the talent fled and all joy was extinguished.

Madsen is a teacher, not a disciplinarian. Losing is a natural consequence. Nobody likes it, the players most of all. As I said in another thread, we will see what we have in him. Can he keep this team together? Will his rah-rah positive personality be effective? Does he have answers? If he can turn this team around, his positive attitude will only grow the program year over year. The next ten games will tell.

What's going on with Newell? First game he looked like he was going to build on last year's all-freshman season. He's struggled since then and last night played with zero confidence. I know he's better than that.

Agreed, although I actually believe there is not a lot of talent on this team. The transfers were hyped up by this site and somehow we had the 8th best transfer class? I don't buy it. Tyson looks like a PAC-12 level player, but so far no one else does. We haven't played any power teams yet and I have yet to see an appreciable difference in talent and athleticism between this team and their opponents. In the Montana game I saw Fadaws get abused by Walker and Fadaws was apparently the big steal in the transfer portal? If anyone is watching the top tier teams in our conference play mid-majors you notice a clear difference in talent level between the two. Cal is not there yet. Madsen needs to get this group playing together because they do not have the talent to dominate anyone.

So if I'm following correctly, we can't pass, can't shoot, can't hold on to the ball, can't rebound, can't play D, have no offense strategy, and we are soft…..

…..but as they used to say about Charles Manson, other than that, pretty darn solid.
