Against Pac-12 competition. That's what McClean said on the TV broadcast.

This is not a talentless team - this is a poorly coached one.

One more wasted hire. How is Pasternack doing?

Not great

But pasternacks hire has always been about apprasing a single alum that could essentially singlehandedly pay/raise 10.figures for practice facility or nil. We decided to hire the nice guy from moraga.

Ah hiring the "nice guy" - that always works out for us.

The smallest 10-figure number is 1/3 of the entire Berkeley campus annual budget! Unless 2 of those figures are cents.

Much more energy in this half. Sparked by Tyson. Wonder why we didn't have this kind of spark from the start. But afraid it won't last
We might have come out too pumped then calmed down at halftime.

Back from the game. Ugh. We continue to be a poor defensive team. We just lack cohesion... at both ends of the court.

Rather unusual: Aimaq starts the second half with no fouls -- zero -- and then gets five fouls in the next 7:40 (or something like that).

Yep. The fouls were the killer in the second half or we might have made an actual comeback ala UCSD. But maybe if you can't play effective defense fouling is what you do.

I wasn't that bothered by the lopsided score. I thought a big part of the early deficit was an inordinate number of missed good looks by Cal that would have kept the game much closer. I'm talking about a handful of very open 3-pointers, and of course Kennedy's missed dunk and Tyson's missed layup. I think a 25-point deficit could/should easily have been 12 or 13. Not that that's a moral victory or anything like that, but I thought it wasn't as bad as the score looked.

And then I was happy with the fight (including almost literal fight) the Bears showed in h2. That's important to me.

Also happy with Celestine's offense.

What was disappointing for me was the free throw shooting. Again, another area where 10 points (going off recollection) could have been cut into the deficit.

Tough opponent to start conference play. Will be interesting to see how we look against asu.

Disappointed in Aimaq. Not his play as Ballo is a beast who kept throwing an elbow into Aimaq's ribs to make space ... yet Aimaq got the foul.

I was disappointed in Aimaq because of the two dumb fouls, the worst of which was when he got the ball stolen and made a dumb reach foul on the player's layup. Aimaq should have just let him score as he had zero chance of blocking the shot and was needed in the game

terrible FT shooting hurt, especially when we weren't scoring baskets. Needed some positive results from the FT to keep our confidence.

Liked the Bears fight to get back in the game in the second half, but once Aimaq fouled out the game was officially over.

Shoutouts to:

Celestine who continues to impress as the most talented returning player. You can tell he doesn't have the same explosiveness and lateral quickness after his multiple injuries, but he plays smart and is our second-best shooter who doesn't let the moment get too big

After a terrible first half, props to Tyson for upping his aggressiveness and showing his immense talent to get the rack and score.

Coming off the bench for the first time, Newell had a nice game shooting 4-6 including 2-3 from deep.

Good thing we picked up Larson. I thought we were light on bigs coming into the season (and was right with Okofor going down) and without him we'd be on life support. He is of course undersized but can play solid defense. Nice 3 tonight add to his versatility.

Askew didn't light it up but was solid defensively and provided veteran steadiness

mean nine. My bad

But about mid range of that. The numbers being thrown around were staggering.
And Madsen was raised in Moraga.

understand though. In nearly every other power 5 that kind of alumni promise would be met with 'Well **** yes. Would you like a dedicated parking place as well?" But at Cal, (see how our AD treats donors) we can't have nice things. Another reason why we really should just drop down and compete with universities also of the same mindset.

I would be fine with dropping down but I believe that's a minority opinion. But I suspect most of us agree if we stay up we should be competitive.

Looks like Arizona got tired out putting up 100 on Cal. They are currently losing at Stanfurd by 11 with a minute to go in the first half
