Roster

Freshman: Jeremiah Wilkinson
Sophomore: Rodney Brown Jr, Devin Curtis, ND Okafor (if he redshirts), Vladimir Pavlovic
Junior: Grant Newell
Senior: Monty Bowser, Jalen Celestine, Devin Askew (redshirt), Jaylon Tyson (if he returns)

There are 3 spots to fill if Tyson stays (4 if he leaves)

I'd say Askew runs the PG, SG from the portal, Jalen Celestine, Jaylon Tyson (or from the portal), and Center from the portal

I hope we can do better at point than Askew. He has talent, but not a very effective game. The Tyson issue is whether he makes more in the "G" league than NIL.

I think we need to operate from the assumption that neither Askew or JT are returning.

I'm comfortable with Celestine starting at one of the wing positions and Newell starting at the 4, both have shown enough to show they can play effectively at this level. Okafor, Wilkinson and Brown will provide decent depth off the bench.

So we need to find a starting PG, wing and C thru the portal. My dream wishlist:

PG: someone who can actually run point, has some size, play some D and can make enough 3's to at least be a threat. I'd be ecstatic with a poor man's Justin Cobb type.

Wing: finding another JT is unrealistic, but someone who is an athletic 3 and D type would be ideal. A Brian Wethers type would be great. But I'd happily settle for a Theo.

C: I don't want to make this into an Aimaq debate, but in my opinion, Aimaq would have been a much more effective player 30 years ago. Ideally, I would like a more athletic, versatile center. Someone who can be a rim protector, rim runner and make enough 3's to at least keep defenses honest. The MOST important thing is someone who can credibly defend small on the perimeter. I believe this is one of the biggest changes in how modern basketball is played, in that you need defensive personnel who can switch everything, rather than constantly having to fight thru screens. At the NBA level, you simply don't see teams fighting thru screens anymore, its the way of the past. But you need a big who is switchable on defense. Someone like our own Rod Benson would be ideal.

Even if we were to add all the above, without JT, I can't see this team making the tourney. But I think an NIT berth is still moving this program on the right trajectory

MM made the right decision in getting this team jump started this season. He could not wait taking a chance of a very modest improvement. He has us on the path to recovery, from our death bed of this time 2023.

To do it he had to work the Transfer Portal hard and his core players this year are just that. The problem is that most will be gone next year: Cone, Aimaq, Kennedy and most probably Tyson. Rumor seems to have it that Askew is on the fence on returning. That leaves mammoth gaps for us to refill.

Nicely enough some players have really stepped up---Brown has surprised in his developement, Celestine always had unfulfilled expectations which he is fulfilling this year. Newell is a maybe. At times he shows potential and at other times seems to shoot himself in the foot. Curtis I do not know. Okafor should do well.

So we really have the double edged sword where we are damned for doing TP and would have been damned if we didn't. I really wish we had a better balance of recruits along with with TP players but our basement posture demanded a big step up.

So it really depends on getting some excellent TP players with more than one years eligibility. Therein lies the mystery. Add a couple/three HS players and build it up year by year. But no more than one TP player with only one year of eligibility methinks---the rest 2+ years of same.

CALLING BIG C! CALLING BIG C!

We need you to chip in here and fight for Daws' honor as hard as you fought for Twin Pigtails Boy's.

Who da thunk Cal would have a center tied for 3rd in NCAA D 1 Double/Doubles and that we would spend more time debating his shortcomings than his strong points?

His defense wouldn't be as much of a liability if we weren't playing 4 out with mostly poor defenders. He needs to play next to a bouncy 4 who is good at help defense. For example, Jokic's bad perimeter defense is compensated for to some extent by playing next to Aaron Gordon.

He has no interest from pro teams. Don't even see his name in mock drafts. Would make sense for him to comeback to college and showcase his talents.

I don't think that is an option...once a pro, always a pro....

He could go the Kanaan Carlyle route, or Bewley twins.

What ever that is? Could not play because of grades in the early season?

Given the current landscape, it is impossible to get an accurate read right now on what we will have for next season. There will be a number of spots open. Many will be filled by transfers, mostly of the one-and-done variety, as Madsen transitions somewhat to a more effective freshman-based recruiting model.

Fun to speculate who those transfers might be, but too early to do so with any accuracy. For example, who among us had heard of Aimaq, Tyson, Cone or Kennedy a year ago? And both sides play this game with their cards held close to the vest.

It will depend on... a) who might be willing to transfer and... b) available NIL

Calegends.com is our collective for NIL. 100% of the donations go to the players. Donate and spread the word. Go Bears!

Those players chose the scholorship option thereby preserving their college eligibility....Jalen Lewis chose to accept a salary and signing bonus....Don't think he can get his eligibility back....

I guess you haven't heard, you can be paid to play college basketball now. There is no rational basis to deny him eligibility. Any attempt by the NCAA to deny him an opportunity to play college basketball would not only lose in court, it could be subject to penalties.

Since there are now basically no more rules whatsoever, let's get ahead of the curve: We can hire recently retired NBA players to play for Cal (park them in a certificate program or something as they build some skills for their after-ball decades).

Welcome back: Allen Crabbe, Ivan Rabb, Tyrone Wallace, Jerome Randle, etc.

Read into it what you will: Bowser and Askew both "walked" today (Senior Day).

Bowser has been given a message by not playing at all. Askew has been given a message by the last two scholarships being given to point guards. One does not to read too deeply.

I literally believe Jalen Lewis is eligible. John Bol from Overtime Elite just signed with Ole Miss. According to the OE website players make a minimum of 100k. So the only reason Lewis would be ineligible would be because he signed before the rules on professionalism changed. As calumnus said, that restriction would not hold up in court.

I think he is worth pursuing. I can't be the only one who has thought this.

I think Tyson will make an NBA team next year if he leaves Cal. Best guard we've had since Jaylon Brown and is probably the Pac 12 MVP this year.
