Wilner is reporting Smith to Stanford. I read here that he and his spouse were very happy in the Palouse - but I guess conference uncertainty was enough to get them to move.

Ugh. (if true)

Smith is a really good coach and a good fit for the furdies.

Never believe the fans who swear "Coach X loves living here and would never leave" or "His wife and kids are so happy and settled here, she would leave him if he took another job". That stuff is just wishcasting.

What a massive improvement over Haase. Will be interesting to see how that effects their portal entries. I can see Smith wanting to get his own guys that best fit his system.

The biggest question is will Kyle Smith have the players to compete next year. I doubt a lot of those WSU players have Stanford level grades. Also, will he convince stojakovic, carlyle, and raynaud to stay?

Not good for us. We p(issed) away our chance to dominate the Bay while Dough Boy was in Palo Alto. Well I guess it's not a bad thing to have two strong ACC programs in California.

That is an assumption. I'm not sure we will have two if the whales dont step up giving.

Cal may be screwed going forward, but I doubt seriously it will be because Stanford hired Kyle Smith. The ACC is a really good hoops league. Lots of good hoops programs and at some point Louisville probably becomes mcuh more competitive as well. The P12 has been better recently but the ACC is more consistent and the travel will be a concern.

Madsen is a good enough coach if Cal has a robust enough collective. Smith is a nice coach and a good fit for Stanford. But Cal has a lot more to worry about than Stanford making this hire.

Smith is a more proven coach than Madsen. Did Knowlton even consider Smith last year? I do not recall.

When I discussed the possibility of hiring Smith to coach the men's team, JK thought that coaching both mens and womens teams would be too much of a challenge.

He was looking when Fox was hired. Seemed like a no brainer hire for Cal at the time - proven coach, experience at a strong academic school and Bay Area connections. Instead we got Fox and now just doubled down on Madsen. Will be interesting to see how he does at Stanford.

Good hire by Stanford. They will be tough for years to come.

My initial reaction to the news was, "F#ck!"

The only thing he brings to Stanfurd is a proven track record of recruiting players who are smart, make their free throws and can shoot from the perimeter. Also has the ability to coach them up further to realize their potential within the first year. Other than that, though, no better than what we have at Cal, so we should be fine.

But you are giving Kyle the benefit of the doubt? He's an upgrade from Haase for sure, but he'll have a hard time with his 3 best returning players leaving. At least for next season. But over time, I can see him building like he did at USF and Wazzu.

But in Madsen I trust. He put together a viable squad in short time last year. He's now had a full season to recruit and understand the Cal process. And I have to believe there is a reason why even good players are leaving. It's because Mad Dog is stating that he is poised to recruit over them and whether they want to compete for their spots. Sounds like from the outcome, Celestine may be the only guy he's told is going to be a starter for sure.

This is why I didn't believe the Madsen was the frontrunner for the Stanford job rumors. Madsen basically has Hasse's resume after Hasse's first year at Stanford. Assume hypothetically if Hasse had finished his playing career here at Cal, would he be at the top of our coaching wishlist with the resume after that first year? Hell no, we'd want to aim higher.

I don't care about furd. I care that Cal's basketball program is set up to win. There are two parts:
1. Get NIL money.
2. Recruit players who can play using those NIL monies.

I think Madsen is a great coach, but without the players who can play, it doesn't matter. Cal will be ACC doormats.

Smith has one NCAA tourney appearance and one NCAA win in 5 years at WSU. His record there in 5 years is 94-71 overall and 49-48 in the P12. His first two years he was 13-24 in the P12, so Madsen is well ahead of him in his first year at Cal.

Now if they are smart they'd rally their donors to put big NIL to keep their center that entered the portal

Smith had a career year at WSU and is a solid coach. But he never won a league championship. He never finished higher than 4th in the WCC. And until this year, never been to the NCAA's. And by the way, let's please not forget the fact that Madsen and Cal beat him at home this year.

What has changed to coincide with his best year ever was that he was going to be going back to the WCC (a two team NCAA bid conference) if he stayed at WSU, with Gonzaga right up the road in Spokane. Good luck with that, although it looks to be a potentially great rivalry in the Palouse for the next two years.

Time that with the Stanford opening, a great job with a housing allowance in Menlo Park/Palo Alto (maybe even live on campus?), and joining the ACC, which is likely an 8 or 9 team NCAA bid conference. Stanford holds on to coaches and he'll have plenty of patience to get it turned around . But it's not like they hired Coach K.

To say Cal was a better job than WSU was 5 years
ago would be wrong. At the time, he wanted the WSU job and was not interested in the Cal **** show job. It will be interesting to see if Stanford will adjust their transfer policies in this age of the portal.

Yes, but it's up to Smith and Stanford to take them back. Stanford had no obligation to do so once they entered the portal.

I heard the opposite from the people I know that know him. Kyle wanted the Cal job. He loves the Bay Area and loved his many years living in the East Bay as an assistant at St. Mary's. Shoot, he loved living in New York City and the Upper West Side, Morningside Heights and Harlem. There was a reason he took the USF job. He loves San Francisco and wanted to get back to the Bay Area. He had spent his entire adult life in California (San Diego, East Bay and San Francisco) and New York for a reason.

With his success at WSU he could have one of many jobs better than Stanford. He is taking the Stanford job because he loves the Bay Area.

The Cal job pays $1 million more than the WSU job. He was at USF just across the Bay. Cal was only 3 years removed from a 4 seed. 3 McDonald's All Americans. Of course he was interested. The issue was that Knowlton initially indicated he was bringing Jones back and only fired Jones after Kyle had already accepted the WSU job.

All of the "WSU was Smith's dream job" "Kyle Smith always wanted to live in the Palouse" and "Smith would have turned down Cal" or even "Mark Fox is better than Kyle Smith, look at what Fox did at Nevada 15 years ago" was transparent defending of Knowlton/Fox that I would hope everyone can drop now. It was just one of many Knowlton screw ups. It is water under the bridge. We have Madsen as our coach and I think he is good, but we will see.

Woah, I see nothing that guarantees either Furd or Cal become a dominate ACC basketball power. Both now have promising coaches. But for those of you who have not looked at basketball recruiting lately, the ACC is full of basketball programs with multi-million dollar payrolls. Furd looks to potentially never get into the NIL game, and getting transfers from the Portal is next impossible. Smith at least takes over a mediocre program assuming he can figure out continuity. He probably needs a new center, who undoubtedly will be a grad transfer and be paid severn figures by a good program, possibly even a ACC competitor. Smith also faces severe recruiting limitations on who he can recruit, that he has not faced for decades since he stared out at Columbia, and he not recruitng against the Ivy League this time around. Maden at least faces a less burdensome recruiting limitations and aversion to NIL. But he also took over a program that had bottomed-out,

A word of caution about Smith. His extensive record as a head coach belies also mixed success. This is the first season he even made NCAA post-season. He head coach career is marked by slow rebuilds, a final good season (where his best players graduate: for example this year his leading scorer and rebounder, and his second leading rebounder and best defensive player) and moving on the greener pastures. If and once he achieves initial success at Furd, history suggests he moves on to a bigger program, perhaps at a ACC competitor, where he can recruit anyone and rely on a deep NIL funded payroll.

With all that said, Smith clearly is a significant upgrade over Haase.

In his much shorter head coaching career, Madsen (Mark is 6 years younger than Smith) already has won a couple of league championships, something Smith has not done once. When I look at Mark's extensive playing career and assistant coaching positions, and compare personalities, I pick Madsen over Smith. I just see much more upside. But that, by itself, doesn't mean Mark will reach the upper esclon of the ACC. The competition gets way more more challenging than the Pac last year. I also expect that it will take Mark a few years of good recruiting and development to take Cal to the next level in the ACC.

I would take Smith over Madsen in a heartbeat. Remains to be seen how Stanford adjusts to the new NIL reality, but Smith at Cal would have been awesome. If Stanford does somehow adjust, then I see them having a lot more success in the ACC than Cal.

Not twice. WSU was the only team that also beat Arizona at McHale. Arizona's only home loss.

Before he took over at Columbia they had only 2 winning seasons (and barely) in the previous 25 years.
Smith took them to 25 wins, the most in over 124 years of Columbia basketball history. They did not win the Ivy that year, but Yale went on to beat #21 Baylor and then bow out in a close loss to #19 Duke. Columbia won the CIT, beating 28-9 Big West Champ UC Irvine in the Finals.

He then took over a USF team that went 15-15 the previous year and had mostly losing seasons this century and won 20, 21and 22 games, before taking the WSU job.

WSU had had 7 straight losing seasons when Smith took the job. A handful of winning seasons in the prior 25 years (mostly the 3 years Tony Bennett was there). Smith went 25-10, nearly won the PAC-12 Championship. Statistically it is the second best team in over 124 years of WSU history.

Kyle Smith is a good coach. He is a program builder in 3 straight jobs.

Mark Madsen took over a Utah Valley program that went 25-10 the year before under Mark Pope and went 11-19, before building back to 28-9 three years later.

Madsen is nicer. Smith is smarter. They are both good coaches.

I am happy enough with Madsen given it was Knowlton doing the hiring and hopefully he has a winning record next year and improves from there.

I said he was a solid coach. But per others, this was his first NCAA appearance in his long career. And again, he never finished above 4th place in the WCC, a "2 team" conference the last two decades. It's a garbage league save Gonzaga, and St. Mary's.

He had a terrific year and deserved COY. He may do well on the Farm, but Stanford will have to adjust their transfer or NIL stance IMO.
