Glad Stanford got their man. Kyle Smith is a solid coach. Hope he does well there,
Just not too well.

But MadDog is a unicorn. He has a unique skill set as a human being. We needed the Madsen vibe, and all of the positivity he brings to the players, alums and recruits. I have no doubt he will have success at Cal, if he is given the right tools…NIL$$$ and a practice facility. He's a unicorn, but not a magician. He can't make chicken soup out of chicken poop.

I feel so lucky we got MadDog, and hope he stays for many moons.

All of this Madsen/Smith comparison really comes down to recruiting. If done right both can be successful. The future is hard to predict but it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that both guys could give a boost to their program. I realize that NIL is a big factor but if done right I would have to think that Cal with a bigger arena and larger fan base (if we can ever get it back) would hold a slight edge.

I hope you're correct, Redless, but Stanford has a lot of alumni who are competitive, successful, and as we all know, feel entitled. I think they'll find some way around their moral qualms over NIL and maybe even undergrad portal transfers to be a real player for top talent. And now, they may have the coach who knows what to do with it.

Spot On HM. The other factor moving forward is how long the ACC actually lasts. There is no certainty that even as little as five years from now it will still be in existence. I guess we should just enjoy the ride.

Good point. I bet groups of those effete snobs are figuring out how to overcome their current obstacles even as I write this. Monty got them to ease their admissions a bit for basketball players and then Harbaugh did even more. I look for them to come up with competitive NIL and somewhat easier transfer rules very soon. The big thing for them would be if they can approve and develop some sort of graduate certificate program.

Anyone have any inside info on Kyle's Furd annual? Article says WSU was paying him $1.5M and was going to raise him to $2.5M and that a mid range salary in the ACC is $3M….so Furd paying $3.5M may be within the realm of possibility.

If I were to rank things to worry about, Cal's ability to handle all the travel to compete in the ACC while avoiding fiscal collapse under Knowlton would rank above survival of the ACC itself, especially as a basketball conference. What do people think would replace it?

Apparently a number of programs made a run at Smith. I'd think Stanford would have to match, though I know Smith really loves the Bay Area (vs West Virginia).

Madsen. is making $2.7 million with 6 years now on his contract. So Smith over $3 million is a safe bet.

Woah, I see nothing that guarantees either Furd or Cal become a dominate ACC basketball power. Both now have promising coaches. But for those of you who have not looked at basketball recruiting lately, the ACC is full of basketball programs with multi-million dollar payrolls. Furd looks to potentially never get into the NIL game, and getting transfers from the Portal is next impossible. Smith at least takes over a mediocre program assuming he can figure out continuity. He probably needs a new center, who undoubtedly will be a grad transfer and be paid severn figures by a good program, possibly even a ACC competitor. Smith also faces severe recruiting limitations on who he can recruit, that he has not faced for decades since he stared out at Columbia, and he not recruitng against the Ivy League this time around. Maden at least faces a less burdensome recruiting limitations and aversion to NIL. But he also took over a program that had bottomed-out,

A word of caution about Smith. His extensive record as a head coach belies also mixed success. This is the first season he even made NCAA post-season. He head coach career is marked by slow rebuilds, a final good season (where his best players graduate: for example this year his leading scorer and rebounder, and his second leading rebounder and best defensive player) and moving on the greener pastures. If and once he achieves initial success at Furd, history suggests he moves on to a bigger program, perhaps at a ACC competitor, where he can recruit anyone and rely on a deep NIL funded payroll.

With all that said, Smith clearly is a significant upgrade over Haase.

In his much shorter head coaching career, Madsen (Mark is 6 years younger than Smith) already has won a couple of league championships, something Smith has not done once. When I look at Mark's extensive playing career and assistant coaching positions, and compare personalities, I pick Madsen over Smith. I just see much more upside. But that, by itself, doesn't mean Mark will reach the upper esclon of the ACC. The competition gets way more more challenging than the Pac last year. I also expect that it will take Mark a few years of good recruiting and development to take Cal to the next level in the ACC.

An interesting question is how Duke in particular is raising NIL money. I mean I assume they are.....but I also wonder if a huge pipeline for them is former Duke NBA players. To me that is the alpha (and omega?) of the program - - it is far easier to raise 5 and 6 (and 7?) figure checks to directly pay players if you are appealing to people who have lived experiences of these student athletes.

He likes bars and the burger dog. I assume he met his wife when she played hoop for the Gaels.

People who defended Knowlton hiring Fox saying Kyle wouldn't have taken the Cal job had no idea. It was a huge lie. He and his wife love the East Bay. Her best friends from her college days at St. Mary's still live in the East Bay. Ask Kyle about Top Dog. He loves Berkeley. Food in Palo Alto is just not as good as San Francisco and the East Bay.

I am happy enough with Madsen, but the amount of propaganda that gets authoritatively spread on this board in support of the status quo ("Carol Christ is doing more to get Into the B1G than any other PAC-12 CEO") is a huge problem.

...
Palo Alto has some very good restaurants but they're expensive. Also the variety isn't nearly what we have in Berkeley and Oakland.

My favorite Palo Alto restaurant was actually in East Palo Alto - Day & Night Barbecue. This was 40+ years ago, back when East PA was pretty rough. We generally picked up our takeout while there was still some daylight. Good (if occasionally scary) times. I worked in Mountain View/Palo Alto when I was single and footloose and if I wanted interesting food, I always went up to The City.

40 years ago my little sister was living in East Palo Alto while attending Stanford. Yeah, there was Day & Night and another place in East Menlo Park that I forget. Not nearly as memorable as Flint's.

Now you need to cross the Dumbarton to find good cheap Mexican and BBQ.

What was the place by Stanford that was a beer garden in the back with a ton of BBQ tables and benches?

In 1978 I went there with my rugby playing buddies that played for Hastings. After a match we were drinking there with about 10 sitting on the benches and 10 on top of the table.

I heard a creaking and yelled for everyone to clear out. The table collapsed to the ground from the weight. Anyone sitting at the benches with legs under that table would have lost them. Whew! One of my many close calls in life.

Three possible answers:
  • The Oasis - technically in Menlo Park but right on El Camino, if I recall. This place is now closed.
  • The Dutch Goose - also in Menlo Park but just a few blocks from the Stanford campus on Alameda De Las Pulgas
  • Risotti's Alpine Inn (AKA 'Zotts) on Arastradero and Alpine Rd

All were good places for a burger and beer - except that you were surrounded by Furdies. At least in the 1980s, Zotts wasn't as studentish - more folks who worked at HP and other tech companies.

Another PA place that's long gone was the New Varsity Theater. Old Spanish Revival style building with a restaurant inside and a nice patio in the front entrance where they served dinner. Food wasn't great, but you could sit in a director's chair with Groucho Marx or Humphry Bogart embroidered the back - who wouldn't want that?

I believe it's Zott's he's referring to.

With all these comparisons between coaches, how practical is it to look at their history in building programs when the recruiting landscape has changed so much. We are looking at a complete flip of our roster. "Building" a roster doesn't seem to be the same game as it was a few short years ago. Unless you are paying players to ride the bench until you need them on the court it appears a coach's history should have a large asterisk next to it and having insights into their NIL situation is probably more important these days.

Furd has a flipped roster as well, as they continue to recruit decently in both basketball and football and lose better players to the Portal. Smith basically has said he has to rebuild the roster or play walk-ons. But unless you are a somewhat elite program, who can pay big bucks like North Carolina, you are likely to be flipping rosters to some degree. Right now college football and basketball don't seem to be stable unless you are a top tier team.

Interestingly, at the top levels, there are a lot of exciting games.

Both Madsen and Smith have successfully rebuilt rosters in very different situations. These next two will be new situations again. Smith's strength is finding and evaluating players other coaches overlook and devising the best strategy for them to play. It will be very interesting to see how Cal and Stanford do with 1st/2nd year coaches, almost entirely new rosters, in a completely new conference.

Speaking of former Wazzu coaches, it was good seeing Kelvin Sampson on the sidelines deep into the tourney, coaching Houston.

Smith is bringing his WSU staff along with Coach Eric Reveno who is also highly regarded - former Stanford player, MBA from Stanford, HC experience and lead assistant under Tinkle at OSU. Eric is a solid/likeable coach who with his Stanford background will allow the staff to hit the ground immediately. Will be interesting if any of the portal players return.
