I always like to root for teams that look like they are having sex with the opposite gender and talk more about Christ than their opponents. Is it just me that picks teams on appearances and similarities to my demographic? I don't think so.

Who would ever cheer for a gay atheist? It would be kind of cool if the gay atheists would have to become Christian and stop being all gay if they lose to my team.

I hope you nut jobs don't go all PC on me just for being honest and exercising my freedoms. I mean, are we living in a thought police universe now? Can't a guy write whatever he wants anymore without people judging him and drawing conclusions on the basis of what he says or does? Who are you crazy people that act like words and actions have actual meaning and might reveal content of character?

Sheesh.

Nope, surprisingly, an entirely different thread. If you read blungld's post, you can pretty easily surmise what the topic was.

I think my analogy was kinda weak...but I wanted to "comment" on the attitude. I'll give myself a B-.

I get so irritated by the pejorative use of the expression "PC"--as though once you show yourself as non-PC it somehow qualifies you as a truth-teller or one who is unshackled from the oppressive social norms to say the unpleasant truths everyone else is just so afraid to say...when in fact you just might be saying something really stupid.

It's like the "I'm just being honest" excuse for saying something potentially cruel that usually has very little relationship to truth or honesty--it's opinion masquerading as fact to try and get a free pass.

Not having seen the thread this is all based on, my statement may be somewhat irrelevant, even if, in my opinion, correct.

The "I'm just being honest" excuse for saying something potentially cruel often does have a relationship to truth and/or honesty, but that doesn't mean that there is a free pass for cruelty. One CAN be a complete jerkwad by being truthful and honest. Sure, there are times when "tough love" requires truth and honesty, because, sometimes, you've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure. But then, "I'm just being honest" isn't the right excuse, the right excuse for hurtful honesty is, "His/her life will be a lot more screwed up if he/she doesn't understand the truth, I do this out of love." Of course, that excuse sometimes is also a mask used to hide cruelty. "You're short and fat." It may be truthful and honest, but that doesn't make it kind.

Screw honesty and truth, screw PC, screw non-PC. In the end, only kindness matters.

Fair enough. I agree.

I guess my point is that often it is a subjective truth that follows from "I'm just being honest". Maybe the more accurate statement is "I'm just being judgmental, but..." or "I'm just telling you what I think you should do/think/observe..."

It's been my experience that their "honesty" is cover for saying something that is more about them than about "you"--so that is fundamentally dishonest.

I absolutely agree that it is often a subjective truth that is connected to "I'm just being honest." But sometimes, it is either an objective truth, or a subjective truth that no reasonable person would disagree with.

And I absolutely agree that "I'm just being honest," whether a subjective truth or an objective truth, is far too often used instead of the truthful and more revealing, "I'm just being judgmental" or "I'm just telling you what I think you should do/think/observe..." and is therefore, dishonest, because while perhaps the speaker may be honest in his statement, he isn't "just" being honest.

I believe you and I are in complete agreement here, I just want to be clear that being honest about objective truth can be just as much about being judgmental or telling someone what they should do/think/observe as subjective truth.

I'm surprised Grandma Stapoop chose to restart this discussion. And to have her hurl around words like "racist" as if they were beads at Mardi Gras is hilarious.

But please Grandma, don't throw up both hands yelling racist to everyone who will listen when you don't do so elsewhere.

What did Grandma say about race when it was suggested Hispanics might tend to root for Hispanic players in athletic events? Grandma said nothing.

Pointing out truth can be kind or cruel or neither, it just depends on context and intent. But that statement "I'm just being honest" usually means something else in my experience, not having much to do with truth but more to do with opinion.

The PC crap is totally annoying and usually a substitute for ability to engage in a real defense of a position.

Little known fact: when the Washington Generals started its roster was comprised primarily of escaped Nazi war criminals who entered the US through Mexico. The reason they sucked at basketball is because it was a foreign game that they took up late in life.

93: I'm trying to get where your head is at. Are you saying:

1) I am rascist and proud of it.

2) There is nothing rascist in cheering for a team on the basis of their skin color.

3) Screw you guys I'll root for whoever I want and for whatever reason I want and ha ha that team won and won me money.

4) Everyone is rascist and just won't admit it. We all pick teams and people to support that share our own skin color or culture.

5) I hate anything that smacks of being PC, so I do the opposite and espouse the opposite to make a point/protest.

I think I've heard heard all of these in your posts, but am truly not understanding what you are saying...and, perhaps more importantly, WHY you are saying it. I don't get it.
