I'm guessing that it went something like:
SB: do you want to coach at Cal?
GM: no thanks, I'm happy where I am.

Sounding more and more like a waste of time and money. Especially considering the guy already makes a decent paycheck....

It serves the AD's interest to contact these guys even if turned down

Maybe I'm way off base, but my guess is Sandy is going into these feelers like with Few, Smart , Marshall, knowing full well we won't pay market rate, or outbid for an already well paid coach. So I wouldn't say "even if turned down" more so like "knowing she will be turned down".

Maybe Barbour has learned on the job and simply is trying to make the best hire, and has some dough to spend.

If she does not hit a home run, it is not necessarily her fault.

There are many facts that militate against Cal in this search.

Our wishing does not make this hire less difficult.

Go Bears!

Are you Sandy Barbour's personal S.I.D.?

She has to go through this process. The fans would go ballistic if afterwards, Shaka said something like " My wife and I are looking for more challenges and the West coast looks like a great place to live. Yeah, lots of people but did you live thru the winter we just did? Besides, we looked forward to having Jack Clark over for more dinner conversations. We just can't get that here. But Sandy did not contact us."

Yes, most likely the conversations are short with most. But she has to make the first call thru the search committee.

Much like with fb last year, the fair weather Cal fan base likely doesn't know who these people are . And the few that do, likely most on here, can't possibly be delusional enough to believe that even if a top tier coach were looking, we'd be able to afford them. But like I said, I could be off base and maybe we're suddenly a smart, well run AD like UW which thinks long term. Or maybe these top tier coaches just randomly don't care about money.

I think it's possible that these hands tied behind our back "feelers/offers" might actually hurt the program's image. We keep fuming the fires of "Cal is cheap and will not pay for top talent".

Marshall is an interesting case. Does he figure to stay at Wichita for the rest of his career? No offense to the Shockers, but I personally don't see them becoming like a Gonzaga. Sure, Marshall will have them competitive just about every year, but they're still a mid-major program in a mid-major conference. At 51, he does not appear likely to land an elite high-major gig, which rarely come open anyway. Those schools usually go younger or for coaches with ties to their respective programs. If Marshall is going to make a move, now might be the best time to do it.

I guess I don't get all the negativity about the Cal job.

I don't know what Cal will pay. I didn't think Cal would pay enough to get Montgomery and that happened. Who knows what donor might just decide that for a guy like Marshall or Smart s/he would be willing to go all in. And I really doubt that there's any harm in a search firm contacting these guys (or more likely their agents initially) to inquire about interest. If you are too scared to take a shot you'll never get anywhere.

Unemployed vs Employed and well compensated is not the same thing.

I understand that we'd have to pay, if that's what you mean. You assume we won't and I don't assume either way.

As for "unemployed," Montgomery could have become employed, and well compensated, elsewhere by putting his name in the ring. We were lucky he wanted to stay around the area, but he wasn't going to do it on the cheap.

I assume we will not pay market rate to outbid for a coach across the country, and buy him out. Yes. I don't think this is a stretch at all.

Don't you understand?
Cal is a perennial bottom of the conference basketball program
Cal has the worst arena in the P12
Our AD is totally incompetent
It is a lousy school to attend
Berkeley is a dump.
We are only willing to pay the equivalent of a D-2 salary
No one with ANY other options would EVER consider coming here.

Just read BI

Yeah yeah, things aren't all terrible. After all, Cal is a great school, parts of berkeley are very nice, and we are not a bottom of the conference team. That's silly, but it's similarly silly to realistically believe we'll buy out a top tier coach. That's not to say we won't find a decent coach.

Perhaps it isn't a stretch. But people post it as truth and I don't think there's anyone here who actually knows. If so, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise I'll just wait along with everyone else and see what happens.

Sure it is. Part of the problem might be that coaches know she is a lame duck AD after wrecking the football program.
