Just FYI http://news.yahoo.com/video/warriors-star-steph-curry-special-004627160.html

I promise to leave him alone (as I do all celebs) if I see him around. We used to see Joe Montana around a little, when he was living in Lamorinda when his son was at De Lasalle. I understand that some Giants (Buster, Caen, maybe others) have also lived in Orinda, and I think Jim Barnett as well. I guess they like the proximity and lifestyle of "Bore-inda" as the kids call it.

Did he get a farm?

When Montana was living in Lamorinda he wasn't too friendly to locals. Heard from multiple sources that he would routinely turn down autograph requests by claiming it wasn't his day to sign. Had several childhood encounters with Willie Mays and he was always patient, kind, and gracious.

He was nice to my wife at the Farmer's Market and at a Starbucks. As for athletes who don't sign autographs, I personally wouldn't expect them to do anything at anybody's request as a matter of fan entitlement. Shouldn't a celebrity be entitled to be left alone? That's why I never bother them.

When I first moved to Santa Clara in the early 1960s I occasionally encounter Hugh McElhenny at the checkout counter in one of his grocery stores. Never occurred to me to ask for an autograph. Athletes in civilian-mode ought not to be bothered IMO.

Sorry, but bugging someone trying to enjoy his day by asking for an autograph doesn't mean he's not nice. The people bugging him were not nice. Just give a quick hello, maybe a nod instead, and let the person go about his day.

In particular, I will never understand why some think it is OK to interrupt a celebrity during a meal at a restaurant. I think it is a misguided attitude that the celebrity has made money from fame and thus owes something back to the public, but that doesn't mean the celebrity--as you correctly observe--shouldn't be allowed to go about his day during his time off.

I have had some great conversations with some celebs/athletes, but they initiated all of them. My fav was a great conversation on a flight to Oakland with former A's pitcher Dave Stewart, who was sitting next to me. We barely talked about sports at all.

If anything it's got to be worse today with celebs getting constantly hassled for selfies. Warrior Jeff Mullins sat in front of us on a flight when I was a little kid. I was impressed that his carry on bag was from the 1964 Olympics.

Yes, we have no fun at all in LaBORinda. Steph will be safe.

Completely agree. I typically leave them alone to enjoy whatever it is they are doing without interruption from me.

Once exception was in a bar in San Francisco in the early to mid 90s, when I noticed former A's pitcher Dave Stewart sitting by himself. I bought two beers and offered him one, thanking him for the fun I had watching him pitch for years with some great A's teams. That's all I said but as I turned to walk back to my group he asked me to come back and spoke with me for a few minutes before I was again inclined to leave him alone. Seemed like a very cool guy.

He was a cool guy. Remember when the earthquake interrupted the A's-Giants World Series, and how Dave spent his down time at the Cypress structure hanging out with the emergency workers, bringing them coffee and lifting their spirits?

I have a friend who lives in Atherton and he told me one year Willie gave out autographed baseballs for Halloween.

We have seen Steph and Dell Curry at the Orinda Safeways and no one bothered them. Tim Hardeway used to live in Orinda and he waved to my young son at a stoplight. I believe that Adoynal Foyle still lives out here. Once ran into Robert Parrish at 2am at Safeways when he was buying diapers for his newborn child.

I played Pony League and Babe Ruth against Stewart during the early 70's and he was a very cool guy. I ran into him several years later at a basketball game at St Elizabeth's and he actually remembered me. We had a nice chat. At 14-15 he was one intimidating guy on the mound. He had the death stare back then and he used to wear stir ups up to his knees. All you would see is his huge calf muscles and it seemed as though he would stride half way to the plate. I'm pretty sure he was throwing close to 90 as a 14 year old.

So he probably lives on the Orinda Village side of the freeway. I recall someone on this board referred to the other side as "Brown Bag" Orinda. I liked that. Made me feel more proletariat.

I agree with you but Johnny Depp doesn't. He is the number one celebrity autograph giver. His reasoning is that he believes he would be a hobo but for his fans.

Shall we hijack the thread and make it about Bay Area Indian restaurants?

My vote is for Amber on El Camino in Mountain View.

Yes, I made the reference to the "brown bag" side awhile back. You have a good memory. Anyway, Steph lives near the Country Club on the non- brown bag side.

Last year on the Big Island I was eating at an outdoor restaurant with a party of 10. Tables were pretty tight. My chair got bumped by the person squeezing in behind me. I turned around and it was Terry Bradshaw. Within a few minutes he was regularly approached (all by women) for photos. He was friendly to them all.

Someone in my party asked who was getting all the attention. I said who it was. No one else in my party had ever heard of Terry Bradshaw.

He's also an occ member.

The occ staff is on strict instruction that they are not allowed to ask for any autographs or pictures.

I don't think the same rule applies for Drew Bennett. No one there knows who the heck he is.

Drew is a Miramonte legend and was a great kid. His brother coached my son's MOL football team.

Montana was buying a suit a few months back first thing in the morning and the associate that was helping him came and got me and introduced me as a big fan. He asked me "do you know what it's like to buy a suit with a hangover?" I replied, "no, but I know what it feels like to sell one." He nodded and wryly smiled.

I heard Steph's agent inquired if OCC was going to "comp" the membership. The club respectfully declined.

Pretty much all the Bennetts were good guys. I was a freshman when Drew bennett was a senior. It's absolutely amazing to me how successful both he and ken Dorsey were in college/nfl.

When watching them in high school, they were good; but nfl good?

I had a long conversation with him at St. Ignatius HS when our sons were playing freshman hoop for DLS. He initiated the conversation in response to my running commentary on the game. He was unpretentious, a regular guy, and just being a dad. His wife was on the court taking pictures and glaring at me like I was a groupie bothering him. I formed a high opinion of him that day.

That's pretty good.

A decade ago (oh wow) I interned the year after Cal at KNBR. One day, Montana was in the studio and as he was leaving, I was also leaving, and we were both waiting at the elevator door. It was 5pm, and KNBR was atop a medium sized office building in SOMA. Joe and his entourage (some sort of publicist type and a security guy) and I enter the elevator. Joe and the publicist stand in back, and the security guy and I stand in front. The elevator stops at the next floor down and quite a few people are waiting there. I take it upon myself to help protect Joe, standing broadly with the security guard and give a look like, "Not happenin'." I saw their faces looking puzzled as two guys are clearly not moving to let them in the elevator. As the doors closed they'd look past me and I'd see their faces change to, "Wait...is that...?!"

This scene plays out 3 or 4 more times. As I said, it was 5pm so lots of people were leaving work. On the third or fourth stop, Joe punched me playfully in the shoulder and says, "Why'd you have to go and hit all the buttons?"

It was hilarious.

Another more tangential Joe story. When I was 14 my parents were looking at a new Suburban. The dealer showed them a used Suburban that had just been traded in by Joe. My parents test drove it, but wanted a new one. When they told us when they got home with a new Suburban, we were furious that they hadn't gotten Joe Montana's old car when given the chance. Ugh.

Stew told stories about being offered rides home or to the Coliseum by Reggie Jackson back in the 70s.

As for the autograph stuff, I remember when my dad came home from San Diego with an airline paper cup signed by a couple of Giants players. I wasn't a Giants fan, but it was something interesting. It was only two players, but one was Willie McCovey. The team was flying on regularly scheduled flights, and that was a PSA flight. My dad told me that he wasn't even asking for it, but some players were going around offering them.

I'll never approach a celebrity for an autograph in public, especially because once one person sees a celebrity sign, everyone wants to get in on the act.

I remember seeing Cal Ripkin and his wife at Snoqualmie Lodge a few weeks before he set the consecutive games record. He could see the recognition in my eyes when I figured out who he was and he kind of gave a little pleading expression to not blow his cover but I just smiled. I wasn't going to bother him.

When I saw Joe Montana at the Moraga Farmer's Market a little while after they moved to Lafayette, I said hi and welcomed him to the community but made sure to keep moving so he didn't have to worry about getting surrounded. I like the idea of famous people being comfortable being out in the community without being accosted.

Steph and his family visited our church in the last year. Unfortunately the kids couldn't stay away so I don't know if that scared him off. Carson Palmer's daughter was in our church's preschool when he was with the Raiders.

When I was a kid, Orinda was the place for Raiders coaches. At one point, we had three different assistant coaches kids at Miramonte between Lew Erber, Sam Boghosian and Charlie Sumner. Kinda had a little crush on Erber's daughter. She was a good sprinter on the track team. Sumner's son Colin was a good fb player, too.

Hardaway actually lived in Moraga in Sanders Ranch most of the time he was with the Warriors rather than Orinda and Barnett's lived in Orinda probably 40+ years now. I know Posey lived in Orinda. Not sure if he's there now or back in SF.

My dad used to have a number of professional athletes as clients so he often brought home autographs for me on his James McGill stationary. Still have them all. One of my prized possessions is a Adirondack bat he brought home from someone connected to Willie Mays that was a commemorative reproduction of the bat he used for home run number 600 with a plaque on the spot the ball connected. Have it in my den now.

I hate to call into question your memory, MB, but Ripken set the record late in the season. August or September. What was Cal doing at the Snoqualmie Lodge a few weeks before he set the record? Either it was many months before, or there was a clone of Cal Ripken (which, really, would explain the games played streak)!
