I haven't stopped smiling the last 15 minutes of game time.
What a joke, ON US!

Can't argue with that.

I guess we still do have to see if Wyking and the Zone guru O'Toole can get the kids to press and zone with our personnel. It does take most of the season for everyone to buy in and get rotations done right. But can it be done with guys that don't fit that mold like Kingsley? We're just going to run that guy into the ground. And while all this is being put together, is it good to have a guy so undisciplined like DC to be roaming around and with the ball most of the time? Wow. This is a complete mess right now.

Honestly...if this lasts like this the rest of the season..the bball team will get set back YEARS. No recruit worth a damn is coming to this.

I look forward to catching Monty on the mic at one of our games in the future.
That should be insightful. I wonder if he will be able to resist honest commentary.

Our half court pressing action just allowed teams to shred it for easy baskets.
I think the half court action vs Wichita was much better. Full court D is a joke and just allows massive points and rhythm for the opponent.

Outrebounded 42-36. They had 15 second chance points, we had 14. They had 13 points off turnovers, we had 9. Both teams had 36 points in the paint.

No, he's not.
And now we all know it.
Damn, it depresses me to be typing that.
I thought by now he'd have developed a catch-in-post and turn-and-convert move or 3 by now.
But he just doesn't have the right stuff with footwork down low, nor does he have the touch up top to get it in.
Shame.

I can only remember back to the 1980s, but yes, this is the least-talented Cal team I've seen.

A more talented team would beat Chaminade on raw talent alone, even while being worn out on the third day of a 3-day tournament, but this team doesn't have the raw ability to beat anyone when they're this far below their best effort.

Well he already lectured DC after the Wofford game about getting his bigs more involved and being a leader lol. Monty wouldn't be able to sleep with the way DC plays. Remember, Monty was already anxious and upset about how Allen Crabbe played, and he is miles above the performance of anyone we have now.

I heard Wyking said this is the most embarrassed he has ever been. At least he is a good interview. UGH.

Uh, really?
Gosh. I wasn't feeling that way.
But maybe I'm just having too much fun with the Silver Swords!
I'll wake up hungover and realize I'm a dirty cheater.
I have really tried to remember a time a team has played this poorly in all those years and could come up with nothing. We were not always good, great or even medium good, but I cannot recall ever seeing things so poorly executed by a Cal team. And the funny thing is I don't even wish to finger point. The pantry was left thin to start, Wyking is doing his damned best with what he has, and the players up until the last few minutes are giving it their all, but this is just not pretty. If we keep the three good recruits we have for next year, we can transition up. We can even improve this year if WJ can get more out of his young ones, but that does not negate the fact that they are playing ugly BB right now.
1) Gotta scrap the full-court press.
2) Gotta toughen up. Some of these boys need an asswhoopin'. Giving up like they did today was a bad look. And EVERYONE had it.
3) Coleman needs to assess his game. He cannot look to get his points off those drives any longer. Yes, he's made a splash with many of the buckets. But it's not the path home. He was at his best when he was hitting 3's, when he was calm. He's gotten tired in all the games. Rein it in.
4) McNeil - keep doing what you're doing.
5) Sueing has been good, but resorted to too many takes at the hoop today. Yes, it was available due to the game flow, but I don't want to see that.
6) There are some missing ingredients that Coach needs to figure out. What can he possibly do with/get out of his 2 big posts?

I look forward to seeing Paris Austin and Mathew Bradley.

This reminds me of the 2013 football team under Sonny Dykes. A young team not ready to win at this level drastically switches styles of play from the previous organization under a questionable head coaching hire.

No matter how young we are we should not be getting crushed by Chaminade! We look frantic and disorganized even against a team who was incredibly soft. We never looked in control and this is a game we could easily win if we don't beat ourselves as badly as we did. This has been an awful coaching transition! Exactly how NOT to do it!

Though, we need to give Chaminade their due credit.
They shot the ball well from deep, they made transition buckets, they battled underneath.
They looked great!

Wow, like, how's he gonna do that?

I don't think he'd change Sueing or McNeil.
That leaves Kingsley, Lee, and Coleman.
He's not gonna drop his leading scorer, is he?

That would leave the only 2 true bigs on the team, both seniors. That would really be something.

And who's he got ready to come in and fill the gap?

Anticevich and Hamilton have played some.
Winston and McCullough are so deep in the rotation that it would be weird to now get them into the flow ahead of the others.

Waiting for Welle's thumb cast to come off.

EDIT: Oh, I guess JHD is going to see more PT. And Grant. That's what I'd think.
Play Grant instead of King or Lee.

Agree, except for #1. We need to tweak it for sure though. For this team to win, we need to reduce the amount of time we play half court D. So I would have run a 2-2-1, less aggressive but force them to take 8-12 seconds to get into their half court set.

That said, if we are committed to playing 40 minutes of hell kind of basketball once next year's crew gets here, might as well start teaching the current players what to do more effectively and recruit to it. Realistically we are 2 years away from being able to play that way though.

JHD, Sueing, McNeil and even Antecivich can play ball. I would build this season about them and coach them up.

Our two bigs lack worth in almost all situations and have done nothing to control the inside or strike fear with opponents coming to the bucket. As they are both seniors, I think we have to move away from that option.

Winston I am not sure.

Mr. Coleman must decide whether he can play within a system. As fans we all loved it when he went off in the first half vs. Wichita State. Since then, very little. The competition in the Pac 12 will be on the level or better than what we saw here, so he will not get away with his "gotta win it by myself" game which he resorts to when the going gets tough. Today I almost felt he was beautifully guarded and wound up sulking his way through the last 15 minutes. What do we have here? I do not know.

So we have four good players, maybe more, but four to build on. From there hold on for help (recruits) and don't lose out on that (recruiting).

Oh, I wish it were more positive.

Youth and talent notwithstanding, no Pac 12 MBB team should be playing this badly under any circumstances. It's pretty much as I feared - Jones was a terrible hire and this is a terrible team. Hopefully the new AD will recitify this problem quickly.

Sorry, not listening to any excuses. I have been following the Bears since the mid-80s and I can't think of a team that has looked this bad. In fact, I can't remember any other PAC team ever looking this lost and unprepared. Have to pin this on the coaching staff, not on the players or their talent level (in my opinion they are all D1 level players). The lack of execution and floor awareness are absolutely shocking for a major conference program with the resources we have. I feel for the players as they seem to be panicking because they haven't been given any instruction on where to go or what to do on the court.

I don't see any on-court reading of opposing defenses, and the Bears can't execute an offensive play to save their lives. Why do you think Coleman is constantly going one on one? We don't have any structure on offense and ultimately it's a relief that we even get a shot off before the clock expires.

To me, the five minute stretch in the second half against Wichita State when the Bears could not even inbound the ball was completely revealing -- it wasn't just the turnovers, but the fact that we kept doing the same thing, over and over. No in-game adjustment nor any attempt to do anything differently. No having the passer run the baseline, no movement by anyone towards the center of the floor. Frankly any high school coach can recognize a 2-2-1 press, and the fact that we didn't even have a clue how to break it should tell you something.

You young'uns need to study your hoops history:

Chaminade upset the Virginia team that had Ralph Sampson (can't remember if he played that game, or was injured, but it's irrelevant). They are a world power when it comes to upsets. It is an honor to be upset by Chaminade and join Virginia in hoops lore!

I bet Chaminade would upset the Golden State Warriors, if they played on Friday!

Just watched the game after traveling all day. I can handle losing but today was unacceptable. Dan Dakich calling the game called the team out for quitting which they did. That's all on coaching. We were completely outplayed again. Our roster is obviously flawed but this team has no leaders or any identity on either side of the floor. I expected this season to be rough but we cannot let this become a year that sets us back for 4 years.
