For the Mods: Is Thorpe taller than Kelly, and, if so, when Thorpe enters the game, will he play the 5 and have Kelly play his natural position, which is the 4???If Kelly is forced to play the 5, look for him to be in constant foul trouble.

Agreed. As good a player as he is, the USF center, Jimbo I think, just worked him inside with his body strength and short game. I didn't see that so much as Kelly's fault being asked what he was.

How many of our players have fouled out of a game in the preseason?

I have stood next to both. I am 6'9". Neither is taller than me. Both of them are 6'8".

I believe we will be in the market for a Grad Transfer at the 5 for next season.

By the way, Matz Stockman is giving Minnesota pretty decent minutes this season.

the day Matz returned to Minnesota, was the day my outlook for this year's team dropped
Here are his stats. Look at the last 3 games and opponents. We could have absolutely used him this year:

I'm bumping this year old thread in appreciation of Andre's MONSTER GAME! As you can see, Wyking Jones' coaching basically murdered any interest in this thread shortly after its birth.

SCT's acknowledging that it was Wyking who brought Kelly to Cal is true, of course.

However, Wyking's misuse and disuse of Kelly last year was absolutely pathetic. It appeared to me that he had no idea how to use Kelly, never taught his team to get the ball to Kelly down low, stopped using Kelly much, and generally destroyed Kelly's confidence and rhythm.

I am thrilled to see Andre playing with verve and so well right now.

Another thing Kelly did was draw fouls. He was responsible for most of the fouls on St. Mary's bigs.

Kelly is my most improved player by a huge margin. Don't even know who's second.

Great game for Kelly! Now if we can make sure he only goes up against 3rd string shorter defenders the rest of the way we'll be set.

StMarys strength is not their big men. That being said, Kelly has not done this before even against shorter posts . Getting him involved so he knows he is apart of the offense will only improve his reliabilty. .

I am relying only on my eyes here, but I am pretty sure that Kelly's defenders were generally taller than he is. He did a great job.

Fotu, who played most of the minutes at center, and was defending Kelly most of the night, is listed at 6'7" and looked about an inch shorter. The first two centers picked up early second fouls in the first half, and once Fotu entered the game the Gaels caught fire from three. That's the only reason I can guess why Bennet stuck with him for so long in the second half while he was getting abused by Kelly. He finally put the starter back in late (Tass), which slowed Kelly down.

It's true Kelly hasn't been this dominant before, but recall he looked much stronger in the pre-conference season last year against inferior competition. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping like the rest of you he can continue the strong play into the conference season.

You have to admit that last year, Kelly didn't get the ball much after conference started...seemed that Wyking, for whatever reason, quit playing him and when he did see the floor, he wasn't included in what was purported to be their offense....

More than defenders stopping Kelly once the conference season was on, my impression was that Wyking chose to play Kelly infrequently.

Along with that there was the inability of Kelly's teammates to get him the ball. This had to be demoralizing for him, adversely affecting his play. And this gave Jones a reason not to play him.

Admitted, although I suspect the reason, at least initially, was because he was less effective.

I'd give Antecevich a not too distant second.

OK, I'll give Anticevich second for both this season and last (after Vanover).

Loving the development of some of the players that I seriously questioned last year. Compliments to Fox coaching and the players dedication. Kelley and Anticivich seemed to be slow and going nowhere, not able to keep up with the speed of Pac 12 play one year ago. Now one year gives a lot of experience but the improvement in each of those two players appears to be more than just experience. Kudos.

I have always liked Kelly's offense, even seeing him sometimes struggle against long athletic players.

He has an array of post moves. Best I've seen from a cal post in a long time.

He also has a good shot (which I think fox under utilizes)

Defense has been a problem but he's worked hard to drop some weight so he has more hops. He doesn't get that game saving block in prior seasons.

I like his big body as he can keep defenders off the block and post players up

Love the fire he played with yesterday

Yeah I am one of the initial members of the fan club and pay my dues annually

Dude, you read my mind, but that name popped into my 65-year-old brain last year for the same reasons it popped into yours. With his body and skills, Kelly could become that type of player (Markhuri Sanders-Frison is another name). The game has changed hugely since Unseld played, but there's still a place for a banger, maybe more than ever because there are so few of them. Kelly has improved his fitness that needs to continue - next year maybe we'll see some real muscle definition. But this season his footwork is certainly better, he's quicker, and has developed a nice jump hook. Against the Beavs, we saw that he's learning how to play against taller players. With the emphasis on defending against the 3pt shot, there's all sorts of room for a mid-range shooter and Kelly can develop into that. I'm pretty psyched about the guy.

Lots of fun to see a young player have that first D1-level game where it all seems to click on the floor and you can see the joy and confidence in their eyes. If Kelly can reproduce that level of production consistently, he will be a key player for Cal for a while.

Go Bears!

It was a pleasure to watch Kelly in the second half. He was physical and had a tremendous impact on the game.

We all hope this was a sign of things to come.

If memory serves I think I read somewhere that Wes used to hurl the outlet pass into the far court after taking possession of the defensive rebound before his feet even touched the ground.

Kelly's interior defense is vastly improved this year. Last season he would routinely let his man get the ball very close to the basket, instead of getting a body on him a little further out. He's improved his fundamentals and his intensity. It's great to see!
