Agreed. As good a player as he is, the USF center, Jimbo I think, just worked him inside with his body strength and short game. I didn't see that so much as Kelly's fault being asked what he was.helltopay1 said:
For the Mods: Is Thorpe taller than Kelly, and, if so, when Thorpe enters the game, will he play the 5 and have Kelly play his natural position, which is the 4???If Kelly is forced to play the 5, look for him to be in constant foul trouble.

the day Matz returned to Minnesota, was the day my outlook for this year's team droppedEricBear said:helltopay1 said:

By the way, Matz Stockman is giving Minnesota pretty decent minutes this season.
StMarys strength is not their big men. That being said, Kelly has not done this before even against shorter posts . Getting him involved so he knows he is apart of the offense will only improve his reliabilty. .Civil Bear said:
Great game for Kelly! Now if we can make sure he only goes up against 3rd string shorter defenders the rest of the way we'll be set.
I am relying only on my eyes here, but I am pretty sure that Kelly's defenders were generally taller than he is. He did a great job.Civil Bear said:

Fotu, who played most of the minutes at center, and was defending Kelly most of the night, is listed at 6'7" and looked about an inch shorter. The first two centers picked up early second fouls in the first half, and once Fotu entered the game the Gaels caught fire from three. That's the only reason I can guess why Bennet stuck with him for so long in the second half while he was getting abused by Kelly. He finally put the starter back in late (Tass), which slowed Kelly down.Bearprof said:I am relying only on my eyes here, but I am pretty sure that Kelly's defenders were generally taller than he is. Actually, Lars came in for that brief match-up.graguna said:like the 7' 3" guy he schooled last nightCivil Bear said:

It's true Kelly hasn't been this dominant before, but recall he looked much stronger in the pre-conference season last year against inferior competition. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping like the rest of you he can continue the strong play into the conference season.oskidunker said:StMarys strength is not their big men. You have to admit that last year, Kelly didn't get the ball much after conference started...seemed that Wyking, for whatever reason, quit playing him and when he did see the floor, he wasn't included in what was purported to be their offense....Civil Bear said:It's true Kelly hasn't been this dominant before, but recall he looked much stronger in the pre-conference season last year against inferior competition. ..The love for Vanover is rapidly increasing.
I'd give Antecevich a not too distant second.stu said:
Another thing Kelly did was draw fouls. He was responsible for most of the fouls on St. Mary's bigs.
Kelly is my most improved player by a huge margin. Don't even know who's second.
OK, I'll give Anticevich second for both this season and last (after Vanover).BeachedBear said:I'd give Antecevich a not too distant second.stu said:

Dude, you read my mind, but that name popped into my 65-year-old brain last year for the same reasons it popped into yours. With his body and skills, Kelly could become that type of player (Markhuri Sanders-Frison is another name). The game has changed hugely since Unseld played, but there's still a place for a banger, maybe more than ever because there are so few of them. Kelly has improved his fitness that needs to continue - next year maybe we'll see some real muscle definition. But this season his footwork is certainly better, he's quicker, and has developed a nice jump hook. Against the Beavs, we saw that he's learning how to play against taller players. With the emphasis on defending against the 3pt shot, there's all sorts of room for a mid-range shooter and Kelly can develop into that. I'm pretty psyched about the guy.bearister said:
