Has Russell Turner eliminated himself from consideration?

In UCI's 2nd round game vs. Oregon, Turner addressed Oregon star Louis King as "Queen". Turner explained it as:
An attempt to rattle the opposing player
a chess reference, indicating Louis's importance to the Ducks

https://deadspin.com/uc-irvine-coach-says-he-called-oregons-louis-king-quee-1833557233

Some are viewing this as an anti-gay slur, which obviously wouldn't go over well at a place like Cal.

If Turner would've been Cal's preferred guy, I hope the future of Cal basketball doesn't rest on a pretty lame and probably ill-advised attempt at gamesmanship. OTOH, a middle-aged head coach razzing another college team's players seems pretty tacky to me, gay slur or not.

Hey, the Wizard of Westwood used to trash talk players on the opposing team as they ran by him on the bench during the game and it didn't hurt his career or reputation.

Now it's a thing.

My take, he has to be pretty dumb to pull that and to think transposing "King" with "Queen" was funny, witty...or would actually work, to say nothing about offensive. Might be a good coach but clearly he's not that bright.

He'll end up in Westwood.

I didn't know that about Wooden. His 'sainthood' is tarnished even further.

Also, no idea if this is typical for college head coaches or not. Would love to hear more regarding whether this kind of thing is common in the college game. Anyone with tickets behind the opposing bench at Haas care to comment?

Conzo Martin disparaged opposing players with stuff like, "take off that dress". Save vein but without the loaded word.

Somewhat disappointed someone brought this up, but not surprised. Society has gotten soft. Trash talk on the playground was way worse than this.

This actually would make me want Turner more. Those expecting a goody-two-shoes coach will be severely disappointed. ALL of these guys are a-holes in some way. It's partially why they are head coaches.

Trash talking is one thing. Gay slurs are another. I'm okay with trash talking (within reason) but then again I'm okay with trash talkers getting their butts kicked. If you use playground rules, use them all.

What makes you think it was a gay slur?

If I call the Queen of England queen, am I saying she's homosexual?

I think you were doing OK in this thread until this post lol.

But yah, I would dare say that most coaches of male sports have said some sexist, homophobic or chauvinistic remark at some point. If they deny it they are lying.

I don't know.: It could easily be taken as anti-woman, rather than anti-gay. "You're not a MALE monarch. You're a FEMALE monarch! Ah-hahahahaha!" Kind of like when Jim Rome called Jim Everett "Chris" (as in Chris Evert) because he was struggling to stand up to the rush.

Of course, yeah, like he said, maybe it was equally about chess... like when I used to yell at Bobby Knight, "Hey Knight: You're a pawn!" He would get furious.

Either way, it was as weak as can be.

Honestly, I didn't think he was calling him a flamboyant gay man. I thought he was using the feminine counterpart to his name in other words calling him a girl. (it's still stupid). I thought it was more akin to Cal fans chanting "Cheryl" at Reggie Miller.

I've had ZERO respect for Rome ever since then. It was so weak, I could never get past it, no matter what else he did. Of course, Everett's best reaction WOULD'VE been to discuss it with him, rather than, "Oh yeah? Callin' me a woman?!?"

Probably akin to something like "you got struck out by a girl." Unless it was Mo'ne Davis. It is hilarious that King's mom wants Turner to apologize.

He did it to two of my friends that played for Cal. Then I confirmed it by research in multiple sources. Here is one of them:

"It would be surprising to many that Wooden was a ref-baiter and directed trash talk toward opposing players. Because he did so while seated on the bench with his trademark rolled-up program, most spectators never would have known. Opposing coaches resented Wooden's wholesome image, and the fact they called him "St. John" was no compliment."

As I said up thread, if you use playground rules...use and beware of all playground rules. Except a butt kicking if you talk trash and cross a line. Rome crossed a line. He had it coming.

Good trash talking is actually an art, especially if you keep it clean. It can be hilarious too, when even the trashed laughs. But sometimes it gets ugly.

Few would be clueless enough to do it and then brag about it in a press conference, much less a press conference in 2019.

Wooden was smart and hid it and never bragged about it in a press conference after the game. Much less a press conference in 2019.

Ha. I sat between sections K and J in Harmon and did that.

I think that was a variation on the Red Sox fans in the 1986 World Series taunting Darryl Strawberry by chanting "Daaaaarrrrrryl".

And in addition to "Cheryl" we sometimes serenaded Reggie Miller with "Mickey".

There's something about pre-planned trash talk and thinking of insulting names beforehand (ala Trump) by a coach that doesn't sit well with me. Spontaneous trash talk during the heat of a game is something else.

The person who could pull it off is Muhammad Ali. But that was for show, and boxing is completely different.

Rome is a weasel. The incident I remember was with Mark Grace. Grace told good stories, so Rome loved to have him on the show. He had him on frequently and every single time he had him talk about "slumpbusting" (urban dictionary is your friend). Rome thought it was hilarious. The chances of Rome asking Grace to recount the slumpbusting story were several times higher than the chances Starkey would ask Groscup about the Utah shovel pass. Every single time. Well, one time Grace filled in as host and told the slumpbusting story yet again (I'm super positive at the urging of the producers). Well this time the wrong people heard it and they caught a lot of heat for it. Rome completely threw Grace under the bus saying basically hey, he said it. Not me.

Basically, the guy made a career on calling another guy "Chrissie".

If he agrees to only use the term "Stanfurd", I'll give him a pass.

(BTW - You don't buyout Wyking to hire Turner. That's like putting a band aid on an amputated leg. You need either a Jason Kidd hire or go Musselman and invent a new grad program just for basketball players)

I'm sorry, but Turner really would not be a good fit at Cal. He is in trouble now in Irvine? Orange County? Honestly, Sonny Dykes was a better cultural fit.

In addition to knowing basketball and being able to recruit the Bay Area, we need a coach who can work with the faculty and alumni donors and attract intellectual players from across the country like Jaylen Brown and Shareef Abdul Rahim.
