where will the AD end up after discovering 'that he needs more time to spend with his family'? deCuire was thge obvious hire, but, like so many people, the AD wanted be "his own man" and to show the world that he could land a terrific coach without getting input from Monty, et al. This has the potential to be the greatest blunder in Cal history. This is what happens when an AD with a Hockey background from the Air Force suddenly becomes the Ad at Cal. mike Williams.......please come back......all is forgiven. my admiration for Chancellor Crist has just dropped a couple of notches. if i weren't a grown man, i would start to cry. what the heck....I'm going to cry anyway.
Decuire was the obvious hire? What was so obvious about it?
1. He was cheap
2. Our most successful (recent) basketball coach endorsed him
3. He had some success as a lower level head coach
3a. Some success, recruiting to Missoula = 3 Big Sky titles, 2 NCAA bids, 1 NIT bid
4. African American
5. Knows Cal, its culture and challenges
6. Has a recruiting network already established in LA and the Bay Area
Look, I am not saying Decuire was a no-brainer against the field. But he was v. Fox. And like OTB said, it's not Fox's fault, and I hope he can work a miracle here (judging by past performance, it's unlikely and esp. when he is a poor recruiter). But this is all on Knowlton, and now we are clearly seeing that he does not have the chops to be power conference AD.
