Cal 73 Villanova 71, 1988, December. Bought a scalped front row baseline ticket for $10. Keith Smith game winner. I was 14 and went to the game alone. Crowd stormed the court.

Saturday Jan 26, 1991 was the Cal win over Arizona

Cal Fights Its Way to Upset of No. 5 Arizona, 85-78

Sunday February 24th, 1991 was Arizona's win over Duke

Arizona Makes Duke No. 61 in 2 OTs

In the sentence above "they" means Arizona, not Cal.

They were the wins over UCLA and Arizona. The bigger win was probably against 28-7 Arizona who was in the Top 10 all year and finished in the Top 10. That Arizona team had Chris Mills, Brian Williams (Bison Dele), Sean Rooks, and a freshman Khalid Reeves. They came into the game 16-2 and winners of 6 straight. Later in the season they beat the Laettner/Hill/Hill/Hurley Duke team. When the buzzer sounded we all rushed the court like we had won the NCAA Title!
I was a freshman in high school but have fond memories of that game. My friend and I stormed the court together but for some reason the security guard, ignoring the dozens of other flying past him, singled me out and tossed my 150 lbs body into the front row. Undaunted, I got up and slowly limped onto the court to join the masses.

Well, ducky23, it took me pondering a couple of minutes whether there was an alternate universe where this happened to figure it out. Obviously, Cal didn't beat Duke in 1991, and Cal didn't beat Duke when Laettner played for them.

I would have liked it if there were an alternate universe where Cal beat the 1991 Duke team, but sadly, after those couple of minutes, I realized there was only the one universe. Sigh.

Although my favorite moment was undoubtedly the day the streak ended in 1986, another moment that stood out for me was Midnight Madness 1993, when a 6-2 freshman from Garland, Texas with a considerable amount of swagger won the slam dunk contest on a team with Lamond Murray amongst others. Randy Duck became one of my all-time favorites that day and ended up years later giving some private coaching to my son when he was trying out for JV hoops at Granada High in Livermore. Also confetti dropping when the win over ASU clinched the unthinkable Pac-10 title. Also, at Haas, 2002 Cal vs. Oregon 107-103 @OT win in which Amit Tamir went OFF! Had all three of my kids with me and it was a perfect day. Come to think of it, a lot of happy moments in Harmon/Haas. Thanks, Bears!!

Also have to go with the Ransom game, especially because ge was LF jrs freshman coach at Berkeley.

This maybe weird but I have two favorite games that were losses. The first was when I was a student and Cal very nearly upset the Alcindor led UCLA squad. This may be a false memory but I recall "Tree" Johnson blocking one of Lew's shots.

My other one is Eddie House scoring 61 (I think). Been to a lot of games over 50 years but that was the most amazing performance.
My favorite loss was Groundhog Day 1981. 5th ranked ASU came in with sophomore Byron Scott (in 83 the #4 overall draft pick in the NBA and a 14 year NBA career), senior Alton LIster (first round NBA draft pick in 81, 21st overall, a 17 year NBA career), junior Fat Lever (in 82 the 11th overall draft pick, a 12 year NBA career with 2 All-Star selections and his number retired by the Nuggets), and senior Sam Williams (second round NBA draft pick in 81, 33rd overall pick, a 4 year NBA career).

We knew these guys were good. Harmon was pretty packed, with the eternal optimists hopeful of a Bears win plus getting to see good team with a lot of future NBA talent.

And the Bears came out and played a good game, a game we definitely had our chances to win, losing in double OT 84-81.

There were guys that were fun to watch on that 80-81 Cal team. Michael Chavez, Mark McNamera, Michael Pitts, Kevin Singleton as a fifth year senior, Butch Hayes was a freshman, Wes Howell was in his first year as a JuCo transfer (it wasn't until the next year that new football coach Joe Kapp saw Howell on the basketball court and recruiting him to play football for a season, Howell's most important moment at Cal being his TD catch in the 82 Big Game).

The Bears only went 5-13 in conference, but played some tough games like the ASU game. The home loss to #6 ranked UCLA that year was only by 6. The home game against #2 Oregon St. was 4 days after the ASU loss, and the team seemed a little emotionally worn out, and lost by 15, but then came out the next night and beat Oregon. The Bears beat LSJU at home by 2 to open the conference season and had a 2 point OT win over USC.

No game that season, however, was as exciting and thrilling as the 2 OT loss to ASU, easily my "favorite moment" in a loss at Harmon/Haas.

My memory is not as good, but that may have been the ASU game Sparky was pulling his tail between his legs, pretending it was his phallus and making obscene gestures in front of the student section, my friends from my dorm and I were in the front row and one of my friends grabbed Sparky's pitchfork and took off running only to be tackled at the other side of Harmon by a Cal security guard, with Sparky then running up and repeatedly kicking my friend while he was being held prone by the officer.

This was a great memory. It was not a full arena. Sad that more Bear fans did not get to enjoy the moment.

The tension in the second half, was marked by shy smiles between long-time long-suffering fans. Maybe TODAY the Bears will finally ** ** no I don't want to say anything and Jinx us. With five minutes left I was alternating screaming my head off and holding my head in my hands. Hard to watch through fingers ...

Stayed in the seats for 30+ minutes after the game, watching the players make snow angels in the confetti and soaking up an actual major sport championship.

It is so good to know that some Bear fans still think conference championships are important. Back in the day, you had to win your conference to get invited to the NCAA, so winning your conference was really important, and was what every team strived to do. Pete Newell was a coach who thought ahead, and he always kept a card file on every good player in America, and on teams he might have to face if his team won his conference championship. And rivalries were more important, because most years you don't win your conference, and the next most important thing was beating a rival, especially beating him on his home court. Even if you didn't have a good year, games with arch-rivals, like Stanford, USC, and UCLA often packed the arena.

Just watched the game on you tube. The announcers said it was sold out. Seemed pretty full to me at the time.

In more recent times 2 games stand out. The year we had Amit Tamir and were down 18 to Oregon last first half and won, I think it was in single overtime. And the "Jorge" game vs Stanfurd, again I think we were down 18 or 19, and in that one we actually won the game going away.
The first one was one of my two picks. Wasn't in attendance for the second one.

My other pick would be Jorge's last home game at Haas.

I was at Cal '87 - '91. Villanova game, easily. Harmon and the Bears at their very best.

Also, I absolutely LOVED watching Hendrick and Keefe go at it every time we played furd.

Keith Smith and Brian Hendrick are both on my personal Mt. Rushmore of Cal basketball.

I was also at the Caselli game, and my recollection is that Tom actually tried to storm the court after a questionable charging call against his brother. John had come to Cal from Serra High, as I recall, and I believe is in the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame.

Again from my recollection, that game ended with WSU making a driving layup at the buzzer, which was ruled not in time by the officials, giving Cal the two-point win. It was a great game.

For those too young to remember, the Come Back Inn was in the downstairs space on Durant Avenue, which is now the German karioke place. After the come back, it was a Southside branch of Laval's for quite awhile, and has had many interations in recent years. The upstairs space was a Tower Records, and now is a number of small restaurants.

My favorite memory is still the Streak game, and specifically the roar after Chris Washington intercepted the in-bounds pass and laid the ball in to get Cal in front. Still the loudest crowd sound I've ever heard at a sporting event.

The Come Back Inn also had a rather free flowing or loose policy regarding checking i.d. for liquor purchase and consumption. I don't recall Caselli storming the Court, per se. I do recall how visible he was on the sideline - and given how narrow those sidelines were, he must have been on the Court as well.

Then there was the Dave Ross "spitting incident" which I did not see, but heard Dave tell several times. So, this is not a favorite "memory." In essence, Dave ("referee guy" because he wore a ref shirt) was in the front row. The Harmon sidelines were so narrow a fan could grab another player's jersey. Fans were right in player's ears. Dave was riding a USC player fairly hard with comments. The player turned around and spat on Dave. Dave, enraged, stood up and a chase ensued. When the refs inquired as to what happened and were told the USC player spit on a fan, the USC player was ejected.

Another favorite memory was the first game of Husslin' Harry Brown's senior year, probably 1970 or '71. Harry, who had his own fan club under the north basket, basically just did mop-up duty his first three years. But for the last year, he lost about 50 pounds, and was the sixth man. In the first game, he came off the bench to score 12 points, and the crowd went absolutely wild.

My favorites:
- The Lights out Eddie House double OT game - loved the Lampley and the young Rockfish squad, Gates, Ryan FHK, Solomon Hughes, even though it was an L, how many games has cal put up over 100? The most exciting game I've been to in HAAS or Harmon.

- The same squad putting 92 up on UCLA the next year, we could have easily blown past the 100 pt mark but we kept it classy.

My favorite Harmon moment was my freshman year, we waited an hour in line to get into the gym to see UCLA. We were let in about an hour before the game and the entire student section was completely full. No other fans were there. Trevor Wilson walked in alone to practice his free throws. We were chanting "Trevor Trevor Trevor" just him and us. That kind of stuff was so fun. Of course he and Donny Mac torched us I think, but that was the beauty of Harmon, if you missed a game you may have missed some magic. Like also the ASU game where we chanted Redhair-Nohair-Somehair. Otherwise the game was non-descript. I feel so blessed to have been part of that.

"My favorite moment was more than 60 years ago, either 1955 or 1956. USF (NCAA champion) vs Cal. Newell knew he had little chance against Russell. Russell was going to stay under the basket and block anything that was close (and he had long arms). Newell put the center, Dougherty, at half court with the ball and told him to hold it until Russell came out. Russell never came out. I think Dougherty held it for 7 or 8 minutes at one stretch. KC Jones slapped the ball out out of his hands, grabbed the ball, did a somersault and went in for a layup. Broke the game open. Legend has it that Dougherty had to pee and lost his concentration. The game ended in the 20s or 30s for both teams. Standing room only crowd."

I had the same thought, tho it was not my favorite minute, but more like favorite 8 minutes

that stall was one of the reasons that changes were made to avoid that being used as a tactic

Was your counselor a really great guy who was a Business Major? Ha Ha!

More seriously I transferred to Cal as a Junior and although my father and many relatives were Alums I always felt like I was on the outside looking in until my experience as a CalSO Counselor. Met lots of great incoming students, got to see and hear some real campus icons like Marion Diamond and Alan Dundes and worked with great Counselors and Leadership such as Tom Trutner.

Go Bears!

Not the same time, but remember when we just torched UCLA by like 30 at Haas? I think it was the game where Matt Barnes blindsided Shantay Legans where he fell on the floor and giving him a concussion.

CalSO is kind of a blur, perhaps because we went to the Come Back Inn. I vaguely remember my counselor seemed like a good guy (don't know if my parents would have agreed, after all, he took us underage people to the Come Back Inn), and was male, but I recall nothing else about him.

I was recently mentioning that I saw and heard Marion Diamond once, but I couldn't remember for the life of me when. Now the you mention it, it must have been CalSO in the summer of '78. I saw Dundes multiple times in my life, especially since I took his class (and he was a neighbor before I went to Cal and I was casually acquainted with his daughter). But Diamond I'm sure I only saw once in my life, and that must have been it.
