Oregon State rolled Northwest 114-42. I don't think Oregon State is a 12th place kind of team.
Either that, or being only about 20 points better than NAIA Northwest is not a good sign for our Bears, compared to Oregon State being 70 points better than Northwest.

I wouldn't read too much into those scores. Cal doesn't have the firepower top to bottom or the offensive scheme to score 114 points. That doesn't mean Cal can't be a good basketball team, or that Cal can't beat OSU in conference games. This week's Cal-OSU game, played on their court with only a last minute notice, allowing for hardly any practice for Cal beforehand, was not an easy win for OSU, and Cal still made it close at the end. OSU was much better practiced and better prepared for that game, and it showed. Cal won't always have a lid on the basket, like they did in that game. Barring serious injuries or illnesses for Cal players, it is not a stretch to predict that Cal will beat OSU in Haas, and also have a 50-50 shot to beat them in Corvallis in conference games this season.

Of course, OSU was picked 12th in conference so, yeah.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I have little faith in pre-season picks. I think OSU may be better than 12th, or else the conference is improving overall, which I am a little skeptical about, based on the number of quality PAC12 players drafted by the NBA for this season. That OSU transfer from Nichols gives OSU another dimension. They look more athletic than last year. Of course, a very rusty unprepared Cal may have made OSU look better than they are.

Well according to Sagarin's Recent:
1. Oregon #29
2. UCLA #34
3. Colorado #40
4. ASU #48
5. Arizona #49
6. Stanford #59
7. USC #67
8. Utah #80
9. UW #83
10. OSU #103
11. WSU #120
12: Cal #152

Yes, the win over NAIA Northwest did not move the needle.

Foreman and Betley with nice 3's - Bowser with a beautiful flush - Northwest's only big man out with two fouls

Everyone should play minutes Today
Never heard of them.
Are those guys ours?

My, how far we've fallen if I don't know that.

I don't think your lack of knowledge of them is because we've fallen. I mean it's not like our program gets much notice besides us. They are three of our more promising guys.

The fall began with Cuonzo taking his finger off the recruiting trigger in his 3rd season, or maybe it began with the hiring of Hufnagel who gave us a sexual harassment case, and then Cuonzo fleeing the program altogether for a bucket full of cash. Then came the brilliant hiring of a longtime mediocre assistant coach who had never been a head coach anywhere, not even on his kids' playground team, to my knowledge. His name was Wyking, or Why King? or Why Head Coach? His brilliant recruiting, astonishing strategy and in-game tactics rode us down to oblivion. We had officially fallen just about as far as a team can fall.

We are now on the way back up. We have a coach who is a Fox. Ryan Betley is Grant Mullins in disguise, sneaking back onto the Cal roster for another grad transfer season. Malik Foreman is the first Cal player to sport a beard. He is not James Harden, but he will score, be a quarterback, and can make threes. Bowser is not the famous "Bowzer" a singer in the group Sha Na Na, who dressed as a greaser with a pack of cigs rolled up in the sleeve of his T-shirt, who currently is hawking CDs of '50s Rock and Roll and Doo Wop music on TV infomercials, and othewise known as Jon Bauman. Bowser is Monty Bowser, a kid from Bishop O'Dowd, who made the best dunk seen at Cal since Jaylen Brown. He has nothing but upside. And he will lead Cal to landing the services of O'Dowd's 6-9 PF Jalen Lewis, the best big man in the Bay high school scene since Ivan Rabb.

We have fallen, we have bottomed, and we are rising! Get on board Tom, and enjoy the ride.

I won't defend Jones' coaching but he did recruit Bradley, Kelly, Brown, Thorpe, and Vanover.

FWIW in 2 games at Arkansas Vanover has 29 points (on 75% shooting), 24 rebounds, and 9 blocks.

Add Justice Sueing who is leading AP #23 Ohio State in scoring at 17 ppg on .667 shooting plus 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals per game.

Why would anyone here care about what Suing is doing? He left Cal, did not care about the program or the University.
Go Bears!

Awesome. Thank you, SFCity... I once helped pull you back in from BI retirement.
Maybe now you can pull me back to the BB board from the OT board.
...Well, Trump going away will certainly have as much to do with that as anything - thank the lord!

Back to BASKETBALL!!!!!

Because when Fox was hired his first, most important recruiting task was to keep the players on the team and he failed at that. When we lost Vanover and Suing that meant we were starting over from rock bottom. Again. A lot of people who like to be pro coach or pro Cal no matter what said it didn't matter. They suck. Blah blah. Well, they don't suck. (And that was obvious to anyone not blinded by sour grapes). Bottom line is if they were here we'd have a pulse as a program and would probably be at least competitive in the bottom half and that would have significantly improved our position In recruiting and our ability to turn things around.
