I'm not becoming a big Lars fan yet. He has a such long way to go.

Betley isn't out quickest defender but sure knows how to position himself for rebounds (of which there are many).

This thread could really use Yogi and his 32 accounts all posting.

Decent performance today against a badly out manned NAIA team.

Bowser looks like he has some athleticism. Just needs to fill out the next couple of years and he could be a high flyer. Celestine is filled out a little hope he gets back to 100%.

Both Betley and Foreman continue to be solid.

The defensive rebounding is killing me. I see our bigs watching and floating around thinking the ball will come to them. I don't see a lot of finding a body and boxing out. Yesterday there was an egregious one by Betley. Today I saw one by Kelly where a Northwest guy just strolled into the lane and got a put back. That's not talent that's just fundamentals. And it's not the need 2 weeks of practice fundamentals. It's the kind that should have been learned in the rec league at 10 years old. I'm pretty sure Fox will clean all that up, but I'm kind of surprised I've seen a lot of that the last two days.

Thanks Bearister. Yep being isolated the cases haven't surged like on the mainland. Slowly and steadily though tourists are coming back. Because of the testing/quarantine protocol so far it hasn't created an outbreak, but it has only been a few weeks since opening up. Meanwhile droves of small and big businesses have gone under, dependent heavily on tourism. Happy Thanksgiving my man.

Not to pick on a walk-in but shot two bricks with poor form and got his pocket picked twice. Bad pass that was almost stolen. He will not be able to provide a few spot PG minutes like our walk ons have done the last five+ years

It looks like both Foreman and Brown can play PG and I think Bradley could in a pinch. I'm more concerned about everyone playing defense and rebounding.

Right after I criticized Thiemann he made several good plays. But I'm not sure he'll be a solid D-1 player by the time his eligibility is gone. Maybe so if everyone gets another year. I remember how Thurman looked at first, he developed far beyond my expectations.

I couldn't agree more. He seems to lack a certain physicality and aggressiveness I think he will ultimately need to be dominate. His hands are a real liability for him right now.

What I think Fox sees in him is 7 feet and four fouls in an undermanned position on the team.

He went small not to match up, but to send a message to the starters from the previous game, especially Brown and Thiemann, who both had not played well against OSU. Anticevich had 10 rebounds vs OSU, but otherwise, did not play well. Foreman outplayed Brown in the OSU game, and Thorpe had played well in a short appearance against OSU. Fox could have started Kelly instead of Thiemann, but he probably figured Thorpe deserved a shot. You may be right about replacing Grant with Kuany for height, but in a game with such a weak opponent, I don't think matchups are a big concern for Mark Fox.

I think we won by 25, but perhaps this just says that Oregon's State's bench is better than ours, and OSU's walk ons are better than ours. Both are believable, but I doubt the difference in margin of victory means much more than that

If Oregon State, the team picked to finish 10th in the conference, has starters that are slightly better and a bench that is far better than Cal, that doesn't tend to indicate the Bears will finish higher than 10th.

Yesterday, Thiemann had 9 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, made his free throws, and had only one foul in 12 minutes. On paper, his stat line was better than either the starter, Thorpe, or Kelly, or Anticevich. He won't do that against USC, but he might be able to do it against teams with centers who not near as good at Mobley.

Good point, but one could make a case that excepting Bradley Cal's starters are no better than Cal's bench.

That doesn't mean Cal can't be a good basketball team, or that Cal can't beat OSU in conference games. This week's Cal-OSU game, played on their court with only a last minute notice, allowing for hardly any practice for Cal beforehand, was not an easy win for OSU, and Cal still made it close at the end. OSU was much better practiced and better prepared for that game, and it showed. Cal won't always have a lid on the basket, like they did in that game. Barring serious injuries or illnesses for Cal players, it is not a stretch to predict that Cal will beat OSU in Haas, and also have a 50-50 shot to beat them in Corvallis in conference games this season.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have little faith in pre-season picks. I think OSU may be better than 12th, or else the conference is improving overall, which I am a little skeptical about, based on the number of quality PAC12 players drafted by the NBA for this season. That OSU transfer from Nichols gives OSU another dimension. They look more athletic than last year. Of course, a very rusty unprepared Cal may have made OSU look better than they are.

in a bit of irony, the Oregon State transfer who beat us transferred from Nichols State who we play on Monday.

I don't think he has time to transfer back!
