McCallop is a 5'10 combo guard who averaged 10.1 points, 5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3 steals a game for Bishop Miege in Kansas as a junior.

This is great news.

Based upon her posts on X (aka twitter), Grace McCallop was just offered by Cal on July 17th. A week later she commits.

I believe that she is a point guard.

What other ACC, SEC, Big 10 and Big 12 schools offered her?

Go Bears!

2025 Grace McCallop is not rated in the top 100 on Hoopgurlz. I tried to locate stats for Calsparks1 but I couldn't connect...

Smart young woman. I look forward to watching her at Haas.

She has been under the radar and starting to make a name for herself on U17 EYBL circuit this summer.
This was evident on her X (aka Twitter) feed.

I trust the Cal coaches with this offer.

Quick look at her EYBL numbers with Missouri Phenom:

24 mpg, 5.4 ppg, 3.1 r, 4.6 a, 3.7 to in 7 games.

Troubling part: 29.3% shooting, 18.8% from three

another undersized combo guard that will realistically struggle to defend in the acc, will charmin every learn that championship wbb has evolved into guard play with size & length?

5'10" is undersized?

She is a 5'9 point guard (as per Raoul's wbbblog). Seems to me a smaller Leilani did alright in her 4+ years at Cal.

I don't do X (Twitter). Had she announced any previous offers?

Stanford has already signed four of the 2025 ESPN top 100 players.

I'm not seeing any other offer mentions on X.

Sidebar: We have at least 10 offers out to players on the ESPN 2025 Top 100.

Those are commits not signees for Stanford. Signing Day is upcoming.

yes 5'9" is undersized in today's wbb game & a defensive liability unless ur a one in million like leilani who never shot 29.3% on field goals in high school

She averaged 3 steals a game as a junior and played solid D against the top rated 2025 recruit in the nation, Aliyah Chavez in their win over Chavez's Cy Fair Elite team on national tv in the championship game of their big EYBL tournament this month so defense doesn't appear to be a liability. Perimeter shooting could definitely improve.

A web search for "grace mccallop twitter offer" came up with now-unavailable posts about receiving offers from Bradley and Central Arkansas. Last season Bradley finished tied for last in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Central Arkansas finished 3rd in the Atlantic Sun Conference, and played in the WNIT.

It appears Cal was her first offer from a major conference school.

So, we beat out Bradley and Central Arkansas for this recruit. Many of us didn't even know such schools. existed!

She is from the area in the heart of the Big 12 and near the Big 10 area and no offers from any of those schools. How should we interpret that?

How is that going to help us be competitive in the tough ACC?

Go Bears!

There are over 350 Division I schools. We don't have to know them all, but if you're interested, here's a very brief look at Bradley and Central Arkansas.

Bradley University is based out of Peoria, Illinois. Their athletic teams are called the Braves. The men's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament title games in 1950 and 1954. In my lifetime, NBA players Hersey Hawkins and Danny Granger played there. The women's basketball team has made one NCAA Tournament appearance, in 2021.

Their pop culture peak, to me, was in the 2006 men's NCAA Tournament, when they were a 13 seed who beat 4-seed Kansas and 5-seed Pittsburgh to make the Sweet Sixteen. That second round game between Bradley and Pittsburgh was a weird thrill for viewers, because CBS followed their convention of abbreviating the teams on the scoreboard chyron and listing the lower seed first. For two hours, you saw the names on the corner of your TV screen: it was the BRAD PITT game.

Central Arkansas is in Conway, Arkansas, and their athletic teams are the Bears (men) and Sugar Bears (women). Insert the Super Golden Crisp cereal mascot. Their most famous alum by far is Scottie Pippen, who played men's basketball from 1983-1987, when they were still in Division II. They rose to Division I around 2006. The women's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and 2017.

As for Grace McCallop, Cal appears to have signed her early in her recruiting process, so we don't know if other major conference programs would have made offers as well. The media coverage of girls high school recruiting is still fairly sparse; aside from putting trust in Coach Smith's ability to find talent, I'm not sure what conclusions to draw, but I don't feel the need to go straight to negative.

Bishop Miege is a Kansas power, but Kansas limits travel for high schools, so McCallop's only exposure to high-level competition is EYBL.

That said, she didn't shoot well against the mediocre Kansas competition, and her A/TO was 70/65, so she's not a point guard and not a perimeter threat.

It's always good, though, to have an athletic defensive stopper on the perimeter, and maybe there's an obvious mechanical flaw in her shooting they can work on -- though it's very difficult to improve a player's long-range shooting after middle school (Haley Jones is a perfect example).

This also could be a salary cap move, I have no idea what the 2025 women's basketball NIL budget is, but if you have to fill out the bottom of the roster with low-priced specialists, this move might make a lot of sense. (Does a player like McCallop sign her NIL deal now?)

Bottom of the roster? How many bottom of the roster can a team have and still be competitive in ACC?

Go Bears!

May have Eliza Pierre type potential. Now need to find some players like those who surrounded Eliza.
