I'd probably get an ambulance ride because I'd have a stroke.

redless, the unicorn situation you've outlined would result in fans/the staff receiving an alta bates level 7 stroke groupon card/remimbursement of stu's blue light bears ambulance ride or the option just to walk on by

Since we're going to use early sixties hits to describe the situation, maybe this is even more appropriate:

yep, I was in grade school. And to the main subject, has Michelle ever played a minimum of 15 minutes without comitting a foul? It would be the equivalent of Nick Cronin actually smiling.

https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/rankings

as expected due to the home loss to north carolina the bears dropped 2 spots to 21st

the bears still control their destiny in the fierce battle to get ranked in the top 16 at the regular season's conclusion (including the acc conference tournament) in order to receive a homecourt #4 seed or better for the 1st 2 games at the friendly lair of the bear haas pavillion before the 2nd weekend sweet 16 games on kinda neutral courts

it's absolutely BIZARRO land that charmin still states that making the ncca tournament is the team's goal, sorry but that's not gonna move the dial at all in recruiting or building the fanbase (potential tix buyers/nil donors) with the GENERATIONAL TALENT on this year's team

10. duke: cal got destroyed by the blue devils at cameron 72-38
11. kentucky
12. kansas state
13. north carolina: cal lost to the tar heels at haas 65-52
14. north carolina state: cal beat the wolfpack at haas 78-71
15. oklahoma
16. maryland
17. georgia tech: cal hosts the yellowjackets at haas on february 27th
18. west virginia
19. tennessee
20. michigan state: cal lost to the spartans on a neutral floor 78-72
21. cal
22. florida state: cal beat the seminoles at haas 82-70
23. alabama: cal beat the crimson tide at haas 69-65
24. vanderbilt
25. oklahoma state

#14 north carolina state playing at home defeated #10 duke 89-83, listen to the home team crowd noise!!

this underscores the importance of homecourt advantage, charmin seems to fail to recognize that just making the ncca tournament is basically a 1st weekend exit to a special team with GENERATIONAL TALENT

it's probable that 15 or all 16 of the #4 seeds & better hosting 1st weekend ncca tournament games will advance to the sweet 16 at kinda neutral courts

Please Shocky1, do you really think Charmin wants to be One and Done in the NCAA Tournament...You do not know what is said to the team about their potential. I prefer her to Kara Lawson while watching the N.C. State/ Duke game today. What a great WBB game to watch. Kara seems angry so much of the time and has fire in her eyes, and unbecoming facial expressions. Yelling is okay, but she is fierce. Duke has terrific players. They do appear to handle her almost constant pressure. I prefer Charmin's style, and her focus for Cal student athletes

Shocky1

ashfield, what's your take on charmin's comments at the 25 second mark in the above video??

coach constantly refers to making the ncca tournament as the goal when the reality is that this GENERATIONAL TALENT team got the potential upside to make a DEEP RUN in march madness in playing elite opponents on a neutral court as lockdown DEFENSE travels

and in order to make a DEEP RUN the bears gotta escape the 1st weekend of games played on the home courts of the top 16 seeded teams, the odds of beating a host team of their floor are very low whereas the bears are very difficult to defeat at haas pavilion

imo this would be a kinda disappointing underachieving season if the bears don't advance at least to the sweet sixteen, sounds like charmin views that differently...this team is currently ranked #21 & needs to move up 5 spots to most likely earn hosting rights, that should be the point of emphasis re: the team's destination

shocky does not want michelle & her FUN teammates to get walked to the car in the 1st round of the 2025 ncca tournament!!

What Charmin says about her goals is immaterial ... the only thing that matters is winning games.

Also, there is a downside to emphasizing the top 16, which seems to be unlikely to happen. If the coach constantly says how important it is, and it doesn't happen, the team can go into the first round thinking it already lost.

Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
coach, that's an interesting perspective, there's a fine line between setting high probability goals (making the ncca tournament barring an absolute collapse of epic proportions) & self actualization goals (top 16 team with the possibility of a deep run in the tournament)

would agree that coachspeak isn't as important as staying focused in the moment which for this team is staying relaxed, smiling & having FUN which seems to produce the best results

but at the end of the day these young ladies are all berkeley students & are smart enough to know that the current ncca wbb format of the top 16 hosting the 1st weekend games is a basically a death sentence for the other 52 teams in the field...it's a shame that these games are not played at neutral sites like the ensuing wbb rounds & basically all of the men's games but the ncca wants to maximize the revenues from sold out 1st weekend games which isn't likely to happen at neutral sites

ClayK
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They did play them at neutral sites for a while, and they also put them out to bid. Neither worked.

The only way to sell enough tickets to make it worthwhile for someone to host is to have home games the first two rounds. It makes perfect sense for 1-14 and 19-64. The killer, though, is 15-18. There's a huge advantage to being 15 and 16, but the on-court difference between those two and 17 and 18 is minimal (margin of error).

Naturally, Cal is right in the middle.

And as for how you pitch it to your team, it depends on the team. I've had some teams that would respond to the challenge, and then use a snub as motivation to prove the committee wrong. Other groups react differently, and anticipating those kinds of reactions is a big part of coaching.

Correct, not all, but if we make 9 of 28 threes (just 32%) instead of 6 for 28 we win.

sorry stu but charmin agrees with shocky

Charmin's postgame comments about late comeback:
On the team's fight in the fourth quarter"It was just an attitude of continuing to fight and not letting go or giving up. And a lot of times when you're the other team and you're up, you relax a little bit. And I think we made it really hard for them to do that. We made them have to stay with it, and gave ourselves an opportunity there to try to get back in it at the end. But you know you can't miss nine free throws and turn the ball over 23 times to beat any of the teams in the top of our conference. So that was a problem."

The 23 turnovers were NOT self inflicted, there's more to it than just saying/deciding, "we're gonna reduce turnovers." But some of them could have been avoided if we were better prepared to handle the extending and double teaming that Louisville threw at us. This part of our OFFENSIVE game needs to be addressed. (i.e. coaching.) Otherwise, things are gonna stay difficult moving forward.

Looks like from the last six games, the most difficult will be Georgia Tech at home on the 27th, and Virginia Tech - who is currently on the bubble, at Virginia Tech on the 23rd. Thankfully, the Virginia Tech game is NOT the first road game of the week, so if by chance we fall, the forum will not be overwhelmed with the "we can't win the first game after a plane trip" weak excuse.

Our team certainly has the capability of running the table in the last six games. However that, by itself probably won't be enough to get them a 4 seed in the NCAA tourney. A good showing in the ACC tourney however, could give them a shot for a 4.

Virginia beat both Clemson and Virginia Tech. any team on the road is dangerous.
