Syracuse is a lot better than I thought they were after doing some research. Last season, the Orange finished 24-8 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Their HC, Felisha Legette-Jack, is in her third year in New York. Syracuse lost 3 of their top 4 scorers coming into this season. They started out poorly in ACC Conference play losing their initial 7 out of 8 games. Their conference record is 4-9. The Orange has recently begun to play much better and have won 3 of their last 5. It was 3 of 4 until they had a terrible night at Stanford on Thursday. I watched the entire game. Stanford jumped out to a 14-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter, 27-13. The Cardinal played without their best player, Nunu Agara, for the 3rd consecutive game. Stanford played tough defense and shot a lot of three-pointers. In that opening period, the Cardinal drilled five treys and stole the ball a couple of times and blocked a shot, turning those three into fast break baskets. The rest of the game was even except that their coach picked up a technical foul in the final 1:30 of the final quarter. Stanford made both free throws and hit their 10th trey of the game to win by 21.

I learned that Syracuse is a tall team but lacks foot speed. They are similar to Cal with two bigs, a wing and two guards. It's a good matchup for both teams. Their defense is lacking as the Orange yield 71.75 points per game on the season. In conference, they give up 75. Syracuse does not force many turnovers (16.8) but they are formidable on the boards (approximately 40). Their three best three-point shooters are Aussies that can get red hot. Over the course of the season, however, they have averaged only 5.3.

One week ago Thursday, Syracuse had a road game at Virginia Tech and upset the Hokies, 93-87. It was their best conference game of the season as all five starters scored in double-figures. They shot 60% from the floor and hit 12 treys. (see box score)

I'm showing Cal fans this to demonstrate our opponent's potential on the road. Their soph SF, 6-2 Sophie Burrows, hit 8 of 12 threes and finished with 28 points to spearhead the upset! The Aussie did not make any in Palo Alto and only totaled six points. She had averaged 22 points over her prior three outings.

I'm predicting that Cal will be able to get their three-point shots off against Syracuse and will triumph, 77-67.

I will quickly review their starting lineup so that you can get a feel for their size and speed. Their star (#5) is Georgia Woolley, a 6-0 senior SG, from Australia. She was 2nd in scoring last season. This year she is the top offensive threat with 15.2 points and 4 rebounds per game. Woolley is second in three-pointers with 32 and has made 87% of her free throws (95). The Aussie is second in assists and steals. The #2 scorer is a 6-3 senior PF, Kyra Wood (#22). She puts up 11.7 points and is tops in rebounds with 7.1 per game. Sophie Burrows (#4) is a 6-2 wing player that tallies 11.3 points and grabs 5.6 boards per contest. She's made 50 treys (38.2%) so far and leads the team in steals w/ 39. The 6-4 senior center from Brazil, Izabel Varejao (#34), is a transfer from Michigan. This is in her second with the Orange. The post averages 7.5 points and garners 5.2 rebounds. She also is their top shot blocker w/26. Finally, a key performer for Syracuse is their 5-8 soph PG, Dominique Camp. She is an excellent ball-handler with 100 assists compared to 42 turnovers. Dominique adds 4.8 points to the offense but is 3rd in steals (30) & 4th in treys (16).

2024-25 Women's Basketball Roster - Syracuse University Athletics

A rising Aussie SG is 6-0 frosh, Madeline Potts, w/ 17 three-pointers made. Another promising frosh is 6-1 SF Keira Scott who contributes 5.3 points in only 13.5 minutes of PT. Saniaa Wilson (#21) is a 6-0 senior SF that helps off the bench with 4.4 points and 3.5 boards in 12.8m per game.

In summary, Cal needs to exploit weaknesses in the defense of Syracuse. They started the Stanford game in a zone, but it failed miserably against the treys. The Cardinal also found the middle of the zone to be soft. Simple ball reversal passes found their post one on one under the basket for easy scores. In the second half, the Orange switched to a man-to-man defense but to no avail. If in either scheme, Syracuse tried to get out on the long-distance shooters, Stanford simply executed back-door plays at least a half dozen times for easy baskets. The Cardinal PG, Chloe Clardy, accumulated a dozen (12) assists for her career high. I noticed other PGs had 10 assists vs 'Cuse. Bottomline: this opponent plays a lot like Cal so whichever team can efficiently play their game has an opportunity for success. GO BEARS!

You'll find that games are all about matchups. Syracuse defeated Clemson by 12 at Clemson. Cal lost by 11 on the same court. If you examine teams in the ACC, you will find comparative "conflicts" that don't make logical sense. GO BEARS!

Of all the information that S71 supplied, the most significant was "Syracuse does not force many turnovers." That takes priority over everything else.

But Cal forces itself into at least 10 TOs/game...hahaha.

Seriously, if the Bears defend/rebound and play disciplined on offense, Cal should be win by more than 10.

Cal favored by 12.5 points per ESPN BET.

If Syracuse follows the blueprint that our opponents have been using, I would think that a possible strategy for our offense would be to spread the floor once in a while. By doing this if their point guard extends out on Kayla, it may enable Kayla more room to drive to the hoop - either shooting or dishing in the case of a last minute double team. Again, I'm not suggesting that we scrap our half court rotations, but we've hit the point where we have to mix things up once in a while in order to keep these defenses honest. Otherwise, 20+ turnovers, here we go again.

Surprised the Bears shooting percentage is as high as it is - because it feels like they are missing a bunch. And they are missing a bunch of three pointers.
Still some bad turnovers (fewer 8 for the half) and some seem just from miscommunication - but the final turnover of the half hurts.
Syracuse has 7 offensive rebounds to Cal's 2 but only 5 second chance points.

Still, playing lots of minutes without Onyiah or Abigor and having Noble play a lot down low - and being down 1 leaves a lot for Cal to come back strong in the second half.

Go Bears.

Note: Live Scores seems to have a few errors at half. So, if the stats I posted are inaccurate, you can blame LiveScores!

We still haven't been able to get our splash sisters going although as we've discussed when Williams is breaking down the defense we are scoring

Cal is in trouble. They have been dominated inside and three Cal bigs have two fouls each. Bears three point shooters are out of whack: both Krimili & Twidale are rushing their shots and they're not close. Only Kayla Williams has kept the Bears in the game with 13 points with Suarez adding 8.

If the splash sisters don't contribute, the Syracuse Aussies will take over the game. Sophie Burrows & georgia Woolley both look like they're on today. Onyiah has looked terrible and she needs to help her team out inside or this could go the other team's way.

Syracuse is slow but they appear faster than Krimili & Twidale. Twidale & Suarez have turned the ball over three times each. Suarez has almost turned it over a couple of other times, too.

Syracuse has 10 more shots than Cal because they have 10 offensive rebounds already in the middle of the 3rd quarter.

Cal should be able to play their starters for the majority of the fourth quarter (2 fouls or less) except Onyiah w/3.
The Bears have missed 7 free throws compared to the Orange's 1 miss. It could be the difference in this game.

Onyiah is picking up a PF every 3 minutes or so. She has reverted to her old self. The team needs her in there.

Cal outlasts Syracuse, 75-69. Close to my prediction of 77-67. I could not watch the second half live. It was too stressful so I watched live stats instead. I will watch it now and ride my stationary bike for 45 minutes to try to calm down. GO BEARS!

Bears are losing the free throw battle. And those are points the Bears need today.

And maybe the Bears just are tired athletes

Warts and all, the Bears gutted through it.

Syracuse did not play like a team with a losing record. They played as well as they could.

Kayla was the difference. Her rim runs were the difference. Also a couple of key steals.

Won by 6 and left 9 points at the line.

But in the end, 21st win!

Go Bears!

Now at 9-5 and in eighth place in the conference, there is now breathing room into the tournament. Considering what was at stake, this was a clutch performance. Now maybe we can relax a little.

Good crowd. About 3,000 in attendance. One of the puzzlers is that Krimili, our best shooter, is having trouble at the line.

Such a tough conference. That didn't look like a 4 conference win team to me. Way to battle, Bears!

Kayla played great, taking full advantage of Syracuse not being all that quick.

I'd love to get a little more scoring from our bench. Our starting wings aren't getting the shots they used to, maybe a little more rest would help.

Good to see (and hear) another boisterous crowd. Early in the season you could hear crickets.

Live stats has even more funky errors with minutes played:
Williams played 49 minutes of the 40 minute game
Suarez played 42 minutes.
Onyiah with 6 minutes for game - I'm pretty sure she played 6 minutes in the fourth
I guess we have to wait for an "official" box score.

Meanwhile, here's the post game comments:

In the game writeup/recap posted by MB, Coach Smith said she was at dinner with a recruit when Charles Barkley sat down at next table.

Who was this recruit?? A big?

It was the largest crowd I have seen this season...People everywhere!! They loudly booed the refs on a bad call! The fans hung in there for the W! The Straw Hat Band was terrific as always. Having the players go around Haas after winning adds to the support for the team. There were autographs after the game. Lots of children today. The three day weekend probably helped the attendance. The senior citizens like me showed up too! So happy for the team to hang in there and win the game...GO BEARS!!

Back from the game. Glad we got the win. I have to say that both teams were really competitive today. Really a good game. It felt like when Michelle came back in mid fourth quarter it boosted the confidence of the other players down the home stretch. Moving forward one of our biggest issues is STILL keeping her on the floor, reducing the fouls. The ACC is a very tough league. We better be ready on Thursday.

During the Presser, Charmin gave a shout out to Gabby for her play in today's game. Talia showed up also to fill the void. Michelle played really well, two of the fouls called on her were questioanable. The refs really slowed the game down with so many calls. So happy for the players they have 21 wins! It's a long and grinding season. Kudos to Charmin, staff and the players for flying across the country to play basketball, then to come home and win two games. I get antsy on cross country flights.
