This seems to have turned into a Valk Board. But despite their sellouts and we had a great record, will we have more buts in the seats this year. This could be my last year. I don't like the way that college sports is heading. Do I continue to donate and buy season tickets or should i stop.

I also don't like the way college sports is heading. There is no way to predict with accuracy how a team like Cal will fare in virtually any sport. The free agency (transfer portal + NIL $) has made it almost impossible to follow the teams that you love. I have always known the rosters and the depth charts of the teams that I follow but not any- more. Some people count sheep to help fall asleep. I have always constructed lineups and depth charts in my head, but I don't know the names of new players, etc. I have stopped doing college teams and now think of the SF Giants or Archbishop Mitty girls bball instead. It's a SAD state of affairs for Bear's fans in the summer of 2025. I am not looking forward to the coming season for Cal because I don't see many of the teams thriving/ winning in this CHAOTIC environment. GO BEARS!

Attendance will be better.

Fans will come to see Puff Morris! And Lulu!

To me high school ball is going down hill too. Why should my tax dollars go to build a gym in my home town when if they are any good, they transfer to Mitty.

It will be interesting to see how fans throughout the country respond to these changes. I am expecting an overall drop-off in both interest and attendance in college sports with these constantly rotating rosters and players for sale to the highest bidder.

wvitbear-my mention of Mitty was that I simply knew the top ten players that they have returning. High school is also having transfer difficulties per your point.

Attendance always takes a year to catch up to performance so I think you can guarantee that there will be bigger crowds at Haas this coming season for women's games. How much bigger is another matter. A good start would help.
As to the comments regarding the changing nature of college sports, I'm in total agreement. College football used to be my favorite sport but it has been totally ruined. The ending of long time rivalries and the creation of geographically insane mega conferences alone have done irreparable damage. I hated watching us play U$C and UCLA in all sports and I really miss watching us play U$C and UCLA in all sports, if you know what I mean.

Hard to believe rhat the settlement only came up with an overall salary cap, with potential loopholes, rather than also adding binding multi-year contracts once you've taken the money and some restored portal constraints. I am not certain that the people in charge have really understood what has kept fan interest alive across all NCAA schools over the years.

Neither of the AD's at USC and UCLA had ever lived or gone to school on the West Coast before their leading roles in breaking up the PAC12.

Why not give it one or two seasons more?

We are keeping the Valkyries to a single thread. It's off-season. I think it's nice to share thoughts about a local team (that also seems supportive of Cal WBB). What's the harm, particularly during summer doldrums? I just bought 2 tickets for the game in Paris. Hope I can swing it. I haven't given up on college sports yet.

All we can do is focus on showing up ourselves (and bring a damn friend as Charmin says), so with that said I know I'll be attending games!

Hopefully, I'll be starting in Paris, since I'll already be in London the week before for work. That was a pleasant surprise on the schedule.

I just bought my first season ticket to Cal women's basketball. It is a pretty good deal for us seniors. I assume I am counted in attendance even if I do not make it to a game.

Go Bears!

Congratulations!!

I believe they count game attendance as the number of tickets scanned at the entrances on gameday.

If you can't make it to a game, you can always transfer it to someone else.

Go Bears!!

i would guess attendance will rise along with the poularity of women's basketball in general and the team recent upward trajectory

One of the differentiating features of women's basketball, I think, is what I call Our Girls Syndrome. Some or many fans of women's basketball (not all) seemed to be more invested in particular players than they were in the team as a whole. They were less fans of basketball than of particular players and that's why, it seemed to me, it took a long time for college women's basketball fans to embrace the WNBA. They were more interested in their girls than in basketball.

I do believe that's faded a bit, but it's still a factor, and thus all the transfers and player movement have had an even bigger impact on previous women's college basketball fans than on college football or men's basketball fans.

And that impact might turn out to be a major impact, as messages on this board show. You can't blame players for following the money, since their coaches certainly will (as we all would, in general), but it is sad. We can get excited about Puff but if she proves she's really really good despite her size she'll be playing somewhere else (for a much bigger salary) as a junior.

Why do we care about attendance? Seems we should care about performance.

The only change is the number of wheels. Today a bike, sooner or later a trike, someday a wheelchair. Unless I can find a Star Wars landspeeder.

Riding reminds me of this song. And the second verse reminds me of our team:
She Caught The Katy

Off-topic: Fascinating stuff, Stu, if only because my maternal grandfather worked for the Katy, the MissouriKansasTexas Railroad--and was proud to do so; railroad lines like this turned villages into prosperous small towns-- and my grandmother strongly resembled the woman who caught the Katy. Nice version by Taj Mahal, who co-wrote the song:

Nice story. And nice version, I'd never heard it with a harp and horns.

Our groupwho mplay music every Friday plays some Taj Mahal songs. Plus occasionally the Thrill is gone. Picture taht with a violin, banjo, and mandolin playing. Saw Taj in Philadelphia in the 1960's opening for the rolling stones. Used to have an album of his with the Pointer Sisters being his backup group.

I viewed a Zoomed Taj concert (from Freight & Salvage here in Berkeley) a few years ago during the pandemic; there were T.M. fans watching around the world.

(So now we're a Valks and Taj thread? Could be far worse.)

I think I bought my first Senior season pass for 2017-2018....I may have asked if there was a senior rate.
I had been attending many games for years. The cost hasn't increased very much. They are general admission
tickets for each home game. The total cost was only $62, which included a $10 fee for printed tickets and to
pick them up at Will Call at the first game. I arrive early and always sit in the lower court side bleachers on the top row. It's fun having families and students sitting around me cheering! I hope I can continue to drive at night, for at least the next 2 to 3 years since I live in Orinda close to the highway entrance. ..GO BEARS!!!!!

My oldest sister played Taj Mahal records in our living room. I grew up in a big family on a small dairy farm in a little town in the hills of western Massachusetts. She introduced me to jazz. Haven't heard "The Thrill is Gone" in many years. What fun!
