Whatever money we have should be thrown at Jordan Lee. If she wants to play close to home, this is her answer.

Freshman center Tilda Trygger to Cal? Such a great name as well, and this is a better climate for Scandis.

(Yes, joking.)

She can eat breakfast with Tony Tiger. Legit NIL opportunity.

We probably can't afford these top 20 or 40 players

This article has a list of top portal players and potential fits (its the usual suspects...)

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7179737/2026/04/08/womens-college-basketball-players-transfer-portal/

Yes, I saw that article earlier today. Chantel Jennings really didn't go out on a limb generating those "potential fits".

This portal season we have "added" benefits to offer potential transfers. Besides the degree and playing time, we can also point with pride to the dedicated practice facility and show the drawings (artist renderings) of the renovated locker room and player lounge coming this Fall.

Discouraging how many of those potential fits include UCLA. They may start 5 transfers next season.

They are listed speculatively for so many transfers because 100% of their final four points were scored by seniors; they have a ton of playing time to offer in addition to everything else.

They are replacing Marta Suarez with Somfai. If only we had a chance for her.

No changes for a few days, just the same four Cal players in the portal; does this mean we can breathe (somewhat) more easily?

Good question. I keep dreading coming here for fear someone like Lulu or Gisella has left. Hopefully instead we'll start getting news of incomings.

Grace McCallop just posted on Instagram that she has committed to the University of Arkansas. They were 12-20 last season. Their coach, Kelsi Musick, was hired in March 2025.

Closer to home for Grace and her family.

Keep the faith.

I think Charmin, Meghin and Jenny will surround those players (and Taylor, Mjracle, Naya) with some impactful transfers. I'm betting that has been the message to them since the portal opened and perhaps before.

Arkansas finished dead last in the SEC (1-15) and has nine players in the portal. So she is going where there will be guaranteed playing time. As the wheel keeps on spinning, Arkansas's second leading scorer last year, guard Bonnie Deas, has just transferred to UCLA.

Most of the traditional women's basketball powers are still recruiting high school players. But interestingly, UCLA and TCU are going the portal route exclusively for next year. I initially thought that we had fallen short by not signing any US high school players ourselves for next year. But if you have limited NIL, it may now be smarter to go only with players who have already demonstrated their skills at the college level. Not sure that we will ever have four-year players again who actually graduate from Cal. But the portal could be the best pathway each year to winning, and more and more teams may concentrate exclusively on that.

Just came back today to reiterate this as how I am feeling right now. My daughter and I will miss Lola and Grace (and Puff!) but if we can keep the folks not listed, add the recruits and the internationals and 2-3 portals, I am getting psyched about next year. Please let's will that future into existence!

We have a number of first-year international players coming in.

They tend to come in with a different level of experience, especially from playing on national teams. Also, as I understand it , they do not have the same NIL eligibility. But will have to see if they are totally ready to play and if they then choose to stay. So my comments apply to US high school players, pending what we see this year from the internationals.

She was the other major scorer beside Agara. So their best players remaining players are Eschemayer (sp) and Swain and maybe Umeh. Parallels their mbb team now that Okorie is leaving and going into the NBA. Next to go should be the coach..

It's probably better to recruit players internationally, they are generally less likely to transfer.

I would hope Lulu would want to finish up her college career at Cal, since she started as a freshman. I would hope Gisella wants to finish her senior year here too, especially since she improved so much this season.

One would think, although Cal has benefited from International transfers such as Marta, Io, and Claudia.

In another thread, I mentioned that Lindy La Roque, head coach at UNLV, might be a quick replacement if they want to try to retain some of these players. She is a former Stanford player and assistant who has a very good record and five years of head coaching experience. However, their other problem may be that they still don't want to pay sufficient NIL to players in this new era.

At this point, Cal is a stepping stone to a big-time program, Marta being the prime example. And the jump to being a destination is a big one.

If you look at the NCAA tournament, you see a huge gap between the Final Four and everyone else, and then another big gap between the tourney and bubble teams and the other 250 or so schools.

Elite players are going to head to elite programs, and they will prove themselves at places like Cal.

It starts with money, of course, but facilities and atmosphere play a role as well. There are only a few programs that draw big crowds and have a great game-night experience, and they will always have an advantage. The quality of the facilities, of course, also factors in.

So what does Cal need to be a destination?

1) A budget in the millions;
2) A lot more students in the stands;
3) Upgrades to Haas and a real practice facility.

But it can also be fun to be a stepping-stone and maybe catch lightning in a bottle one year.

Given that there is no clamor for additional teams this is strictly about more games which means more money. Otherwise it's pointless. Virtually all sports all over the world are adding games to their schedules and tournaments. It's out of control. If the NCAA really cared about their product they'd do something about the lack of parity. That, not additional games, is what's needed.

Exactly. The money saved on recruiting could be thrown in the nil.

Is Kate paye hard to get along with? I read on Stanford board that most of the posters would have preferred another coach particularly Charmin.

Why would people on this board be against this? We would have made the tournament if they had expanded the tournament.

It's like inflation. If more and more teams make the tournament than making the tournament will have less cache. Conversations will become: they made the tourney but as a 22nd seed. Big deal.

I took Tara's BB class two years ago

Very interesting with lots of good guest speakers including former players, a college ref, MBB coach, etc
