First preseason game tonight at 5:30 pm vs. Seattle Storm at Chase Center.
Watch it on CBS5 San Francisco.

Pregame show at 5 pm.

Added intrigue: Gabby Williams leaving the Storm and signing with the Valkyries during the offseason. The trade of draft picks between the two teams during the Draft - Marta Suarez and Flau'jae Johnson.

Marta's played a couple of minute in the first quarter; some nice passing, a rebound, one failed 3. I like the way her teammates are making sure she gets some open looks (and the attention she's getting from the commentators).

J.B.'s playing well; I really hope she stays with the Storm.

J.B. with +/- of +10 in just 12 minutes.

Sellout for a preseason game.

I got some looks when I cheered for her yelling "Go Bears" (amid all the Valkyries fans)....but I did the same for Marta. Pretty fun to see both in action at Ballhalla.

It was a fun game last night. It will be a tough competition for the final roster spots. They are already selling Marta jerseys, so I'm assuming she has a spot or they are being optimistic. I enjoyed watching her with the team last night. It seems like she fits in well!

Seems like they waived everyone invited to training camp (besides LA and KC), including Marta.

Oh No, hopefully, Marta will end up on another team!

I am hopeful she will get one of the two developmental spots for the Valkyries. You must be waived first.

Yeah, the whole dev spot and. waiver stuff is soooo confusing. Supposedly can be grabbed with 48 hours....if not, then could return. I think there is a plan of course....

From ClutchPoints:

"Development players can participate in all training sessions and practices, and travel with the team. However, they can only be on the active roster for 12 games.

Among this round of cuts, Suarez and (Ashlon) Jackson (rookie from Duke) seem to have the inside track on earning those final, precious developmental spots."

They do make $6k if they appear in a game.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Marta will clear waivers.

This is bizarre. Why is she being underestimated again? Does having an all-around skill set mean anything anymore? I have no doubt that Marta would have cracked the rotation, if she given a chance to grow with the Valks. I think she can turn into a female version of Gui Santos (who was also doubted in the beginning), but she is an even better passer. If she gets signed to a development deal, she only makes $750 week. The ball people probably make that much. I'm not happy...Go Marta.

She's not necessarily being underestimated. The Valkyries have too many valuable/talented players but not enough roster spots. She has to defer to those who were there last season and the high profile players they signed during the offseason.

The W's limits on use of developmental players are more restrictive than the NBA's limits on the use of "two-way" players in NBA games. More restrictive because of the lower percentage of games a developmental player can play in, on top of the smaller active roster sizes (12 for WNBA teams compared to 15 for NBA teams). Also, NBA two-way players can play in G-League games to get more playing time, in addition to their limited number of NBA games.

This isn't MBB; the Warriors have 18 players in their roster; the Valks can have 12. They also cut Cate Reese, a fine, if undersized, post who played very well for Arizona. This isn't about poor Marta; it's about assessing the team's needs. Marta is talented, and she'll find a place. (Although I do wish the Valks had held onto Flau'jae Johnson.)

If the rules are that a player needs to be waived before being assigned to the developmental role, then I suppose this is a step towards that.

It does seem that is the plan, although I'm not educated on the ins and outs of the WNBA rules.

I would guess the organization communicated this to her.

Hopefully the player assessments are correct and there is too much depth. If there is an injury to someone on the active roster, it may open the door for Marta to be promoted.

I guess we'll just have to let it play out.

Based on Marta's skill levels, I had always thought she might be better (offensively) as a pro as she matures. Defensively, I think she still needs some work, but definitely a dynamic offensive player.

Marta Suarez is a fine all-around offensive player, but the question is the same for every level when you move up: Who you gonna guard?

Suarez has limited athleticism and size. She's not tall enough or strong enough to guard WNBA power forwards and she is nowhere near quick enough to defend WNBA small forwards.

She's a very skilled player who will have a nice overseas career, and may return to the W as a reserve when the league adds two more teams. (There's not nearly enough talent for two more teams .,.. or, really, even with this many teams.)

As for Cate Reese, she is one of a long line of tall posts who can dominate lower levels with size, but do not have near the size and strength to compete with WNBA posts. Lauren Betts and Cameron Brink are a level (or two) above her, but Reese and posts like Elizabeth Kitley and others are simply unable to contribute enough in a league that is much, much better at the upper levels than people think.

Re Marta, Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I've already considered all the pros and cons of her game. I've watched enough of her at CAL and TCU to know that she is a winner who can contribute in a swiss-army-knife-multitude-of-ways. Yes, the Valks had a great initial season. Can they improve? Certainly, or they would have one the title, instead of losing in the first round. Do the coaches and scouts have a better eye than me for these type of things? I hope so, after all, they are getting paid to evaluate. Do I think that Marta would make the team better than some of the players who are still on the roster? Of course, 100%, otherwise, I wouldn't have made this post. How about we agree to disagree, mark the tape, and re-visit things in a year or two. Go Marta, go J.K.

Just sent this to a friend (please let me know if turns out I got anything wrong; some of the local broadcasting schedules take a while to settle down during the early part of the W season:

The Valks' schedule: https://www.wnba.com/schedule?season=2026&month=all&team=valkyries

ION telly (national) is Channel 65-1; and the "local broadcaster" is supposedly KPIX+ (Ch. 44).

Also, radio FM-95.7, "The Game," covers them, as they do the Dubs .

An on-line League Pass costs $39.99, and covers plenty of other teams' games, especially if they're not available locally: https://www.wnba.com/leaguepass?plan=annual

League Pass subscribers have complained about too many blackouts, as apparently all nationally broadcast games are blocked. Don't know if that's true, but worth asking about ...

League pass is free for season ticket holders. So far, it's been fine to watch all the pre-season games as they happen. Not sure regarding blackouts, etc. I think they upgraded it a bit this year. You can load the app on your streaming device and watch pretty easily...fingers crossed.

It happens, but L.P. is still worth the $40.

According to https://www.valkyriesbeat.com: "A source spoke with Valkyries Beat on Wednesday afternoon and said that the Valkyries actually did offer Suarez a developmental roster spot after she was drafted, and then again when they waived her, but she felt like she would get a better opportunity to play elsewhere."

IMO she made the right decision. I dont know much about Phoenix but think the Valkyries are too deep!

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. She saw the make-up of the team and realized her assets would be more useful elsewhere.

Why would she ever sign with the Valks after being traded for and waived by them? -- unless it was an absolute last resort, which it obviously was not. New horizons, open minds. Much success to you, go Marta.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
She HAD to be waived to be offered a dev spot. That's how it works. Everyone needs to understand how the CBA works, etc. It's a business. She wasn't going to make the regular roster and every player must be waived first, prior to being put on a dev roster....after 48 hours, if they're not picked up/signed by another team, they can be offered a spot.
