"Junior Bre Cavanaugh '15 turned down Louisville, Kentucky, Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College and many other top programs to commit to the University of California at Berkely. Cavanaugh, the number-34 ranked player in her class and a electrifying combo guard is expected to play point guard for Cal, a program that went to the Final 4 just one year ago. Bre lives in Allamuchy, N.J., and is a four-year Blair starter."

I am the person predicting that Green will be our starting PG in 2015, no matter what other players we recruit. Too many skills not to get the ball in her hands in that role (See Magic Johnson for prototype tall point guard). I expect that any other PG we get will be in a three-guard rotation. But I doubt they will start for us in the PAC12 as a freshman over Green.

In the meantime, that was not my quote about Cavanaugh I think Cavanaugh looks like an ideal combo guard, but not a starting PG.

Written by her high school coach. That's cool. Sadie Edwards seems to have been the point during her career, but Cavanaugh may be at point in her senior season.

The whole website is interesting for a variety of reasons. Several WBB stars at Blair have chosen the Ivy League over other D-1 schools most notably Temi Fagbenle who is at Harvard. Bre may well hjave chosen Cal for academic reasons and it will be interesting to see her major when she arrives. One of the Sciences, perhaps?

I am really looking forward to her arrival in Berkeley. :bravo

I believe Fagbenle has been IVY WBB POY. I was told by a close observer of IVY WBB that Temi is athletic, and a good player, but she's got no one to challenge her to become a great player.

I would like to know why Lindsay Gottlieb is not recruiting this girl. The recruiting priorities of this staff seem really off to me.

Or maybe she is?

We are pretty stacked with the tall combo guard/forward type with Cowling, Green, and Range. Not a huge need. Now posts and a PG? I'll start freaking out if I don't see us landing on lists.

Yeah, that could be the reason. It would make sense. I hate to see us not on her list though. And I don't see us mentioned much by anyone. Maybe that is what's really bothering me.

I am terribly afraid LG is putting all her eggs in one basket like she has before. This is a time of year when I worry a lot and nothing in the last few years is lessening those fears. I guess I believe in more offers rather than less. With the PAC on the improve as it is, it would be easy to slide down several spots in the standings very quickly.

I'm curious: Did the Cal coaches tell you they weren't recruiting her?

My assumption would be that coaches recruit every player they feel can help them, at least at the start. So are you saying they never contacted her or showed any interest?

Yeah, LG called called me and said "We didn't call her at all, in case Clay asks". :p I get your point. They probably did discuss her. She might have not listed Cal because she felt her PT would be more limited here.

Though SRBear may be right. Cal doesn't recruit outside shooters. Seriously though, with her height she might well be being recruited by the Bears, but just didn't mention us to this interviewer.

This is the time of year for light speculation and some tongue-in-cheek humor. Five months of serious worrying about recruiting is hard on the emotional well-being. There'll be opportunity in the fall for some serious fear.

And a final thought for this morning. Besides a point guard, I think Teaira McCowan would look dazzling in a Bear uniform. Blue and Gold that is. Not green and yellow. She would give Cal the most powerful post in the PAC. :hammer:

This is not a good thing. It seems we are not attracting recruits like Close is. Maybe Gottlieb's plan is to let the Bruins recruit their second #1 class thereby causing the team to implode from internal dissension. I wonder if this will work?

Wow! I can't believe Close is attracting this kind of talent in volume. For a long time ucla was the sleeping giant. The giant is up and kicking butt in recruiting. Meanwhile, Cal's golden opportunity to solidify ourselves as the #2 Pac-12 program behind Furd is slipping away on the recruiting trail, as ucla isn't the only conference program to be making major upgrades to their talent level. I read somewhere that Close has a really good recruiter on her staff. Maybe that is what Cal needs, as our overall recruiting has lacked depth and position diversity under Lindsay and staff. On the men's side, Cal just hired an accomplished recruiter in Hufnagel. Maybe WBB needs a new assistant with a strong recruiting track record. Please don't start again with our 2 McDonald A-A's. What ucla is doing with recruiting is mind-boggling. Their number is amazing, and the quality is awesome from top-to-bottom. dfineguy is probably right that ucla may end up with the top ranked class again. If not #1 then Top 5 for sure. I sure hope Close messes up, because it won't be the be lack of talent that prevents ucla from moving right by Cal.

So far the numbers and balance will allow plenty of playing time for all. If Close can coach they should be getting very good.

I'm not sure Stanford will be #1 for long. It looks to me like the Pac-12 is shaping up to be a really tough conference in WBB.

What is selling UCLA right now is the charisma of Jordan Canada. She knows all of the major players and is convincing them that they can win a national championship together. Not sure she will be wrong about that if she keeps this up. We will find out if Close can coach and keep out
of her own way.

Good point about Canada ... and UCLA has some recruiting magic nationally that Cal doesn't, really. You've got the L.A. scene (beaches, Rodeo Drive, glamor, etc.) while Cal has Telegraph and an academic reputation.

UCLA and USC didn't take women's basketball seriously until very recently, but with the new ADs came a commitment, along with a bigger budget, to get better. Not only is Cal is in trouble, so is Stanford. It's a new day in the Pac-12 ...

I don't think we are in trouble. Our overall results and the performances of our coaches will still be very positive. But the challenges will certainly be getting bigger. The one plus will be additional numbers of PAC12 teams getting into the tournament

I think what it really means is that there will be too many people recruiting for too few top West Coast players. The ante has been upped for further national and international recruiting. Coaches are going to need to spend a lot more time at airports.

Posible Recruits: Twitter Accounts: Google Them.

2015

1) PALLAS KUNAIYI-AKPANAH 6.3 post 2015 from Nigeria Raw Talent: Body: WNBA ready. She seems like a 2 year project. Should be amazing for senior year. This is the type of player you want you want on your team. Long-term project. You see her video and you just see her potential. Her account just appeared a few days on main coach.

2) Sam Fuehring 6.2 PF NJ top 100 I saw a few videos, she is strong. #92 (Her Twitter Account is on all four coaches. I have a feeling she is going to verbal very soon. Just look at her pictures. East Coast Player. Not a center or post but a true PF. 4 all over the court. Strong body. plays like Simons, but taller. The best PF I have seen in 2015. She is not a 5 player, plays the four like it should be played. She may be our third verbal.

3) Center Nora Kiesler Indiana 6'4"/ just outside the top 100 again very green. Seems like a plan B to me. But a good/strong plan B: No video yet. I see solid minutes.

2016 #39 8 (Post) P Mallory McGwire Nevada 6'3"/ The best Post/Center on the West Coast.

2016 #20 3 Guard G Natalie Chou Texas 5'11"/ Saw an interview and is looking for a school with strong Academics. Very Smart. Not too physical but high basketball IQ. Again, high on academics.

There are things to really like about all of these players. Some more than others maybe, but that is more about what would be needed to raise them to our level. Kiesler started in volleyball apparently where she is actually listed at 6'6" 2 years ago. McGwire I had noticed because of the way her last name is spelled. Atypical spelling eh? Chou actually seems ready to go now. She may need strengthening, but most do out of high school. No photo of Pallas but Fuehring looks strong which we will need when Gray is gone.

If Gottlieb is willing to fill the roster knowing a couple will not get a lot of PT, but a great education, I'd get some offers out there. If she waffles and waits, they will be gone.

And poseable is spelled like this. But I don't care if they have modelling experience. :woohoo

If you're going to throw the "LA scene out there" you should compare it with San Francisco Bay and the magnificent natural beauty of the area, not Telegraph v. Rodeo Drive-it's apples and oranges, not to mention the most negative view possible. All the recruits go into San Francisco which is more appealing to LA.

Thanks for the detective work.

The Jersey girl is intriguing. Certainly sounds like a skilled player who could provide depth.

The girl from Nigeria certainly seems to have big upside.

Chou from Texas would be great. She has great length and would probably be the best shooter for us if we landed her.

Still seems as though there will be more options from 2016 rather than 2015. Very curious about Jaelyn Brown, she could be a superstar for us that would really make a strong counter to UCLA's loaded roster.

Chou is not under the radar. Gottlieb needs to pursue her hard, now.

And you didn't mention the post player from Indiana, Nora Kiesler. From Indiana is a significant factor as it is a state with a rich hoops tradition and her VB expeience as a middle blocker may mean shotblocking skills which she developed at an early age. Plus she seems to be a true center in the traditional sense. Kiesler, Fuehring and Chou first, then Pallas because she's 2015 and recruit McGwire after we have developed a rapport with her. We have a little time to do that with the Nevadan.

I'm a Bay Area fan, but "LA scene" does not refer to natural beauty. It's ambiance appeals to many types. Not my preference, but many buy into it.

McKynzie Fort 5-9 PG 2014 Etiwanda HS CA who had originally signed with Oregon but received her release has signed with San Diego State. from ASGR

I would of offered her. Only player to go from a none ranking to a top 100 in the ESPN rankings. From an 88 to a 92 score in just a few months. P.G is the only position we dont have a back-up for.

After Oregon got a new coach she was looking for a new home.

Per ESPN

Explosively athletic combo-guard handles and attack in uptempo; quick-leaper,active on glass, passing lanes; finishes vs. contact. (Olson)

We only have 11 players in our 2014-2015 class. UCLA, Stanford and others have 15.
We need a back up at P.G.
