Roster posted.

Major news: Hugo Gonzalez is still listed on the roster as a grad student.

Both Reece Whitley and Chris Jhong had earlier confirmed their intention to take their Covid 5th year, and Reece is expected to be a significant point earner in his individual events as well as a relay contributor. If Jhong can return to form he has an outside chance on earning an NCAA invite.

Freshman Matthew Chai and grad transfer Patrick Callan look to be impact additions to the team in the mid and distance free events, with the Bear's also adding four breaststrokers, including D3 champion Luke Rodarte. Colby Hatton adds sprint depth, and grad transfer Bora Unalmis provides distance depth.

Cal also adds Conrad Eck. a 6'2" diver from Colorado.

Hugo, along with Destin Lasco, Bjorn Seeliger, Liam Bell, Jason Louser, Reece Whitley, Dare Rose and Gabriel Jett all project to be multi-individual event point earners at the NCAA championship level, and collectively make up one of the top relay groups in the country. Texas and Florida will also be championship contenders but the Bears are poised to repeat as NCAA champs.

What's up with Louser? Seen hanging with the team at the start with the student-athlete social events and still has "Cal Men's Swim '23" in his IG bio, but he's not on the roster. Hoping it's more of a clerical error than anything else.

King of the Pool Results

https://calbears.com/news/2022/9/30/mens-swimming-diving-lasco-named-king-of-the-pool.aspx

The Cal men opened the season with their annual team bonding exercise in San Luis Obispo. As usual, a number of Cal swimmers did not compete including Seeliger and Bell (2nd year in a row for both), Hugo Gonzalez, who is reportedly training in Spain for the first semester, Gabriel Jett, Reece Whitley and new grad transfer, Patrick Callan.

While early season times don't really mean much, a couple of times caught my attention:

- In 2021, Robin Hanson swam the fastest 100 free in 44.03. In today's 100 free, Jack Alexy clocked a 43.62, ahead of Destin Lasco's 43.63 and Hanson's 43.87.

- With Reece Whitley out, sophomore Jacob Soderlund won the 100 breast in 55.07, compared to the 57.15 he posted in this event last year.

- Dare Rose, who is expected to compete for our relay fly legs, won the 100 fly in 48.3, which is a decent drop from the 49.55 he posted last year.

The Road to attain NCAA invites for the Bears really begins in earnest at the Minnesota Invite in late November/early December, which just happens to be where the Men's NCAAs will be held in March 2023.
