Ohio State's Maya Geringer announced her intent to swim at Cal for her 5th year. A 4 year NCAA scorer for the Buckeyes in the mile, she will head to Berkeley with a 4:39.5 500 free and 15:56 mile.

Who was the last women swimmer that we had to
score in the mIle? Can't recall.

I think Cierra Runge may have been the last woman swimmer to score in the mile at the national championship?

Runge was runner-up to Leah Smith (UVA) with her 15:46.46 at 2015 NCAAs. She holds the top spot in Cal's All-Time Top 10 in this event, with her 15:40.17 from 2015 Pac-12s. Unfortunately Runge only competed a single season for us (the McKeever effect? cough cough)

Maya Geringer's 15:56.28 PB from 2023 would come in at #2 on Cal's All-Time list, faster than #2 Lauren Boyle's 15:56.93 achieved back in 2009

Kinda off-topic for "2024 Women's Swim Recruiting", but I think it's worth mentioning that Claire Weinstein from the 2025 recruiting class has an even faster best time of 15:51.64, which would have placed 6th in the A final of the 1650 Free at 2024 NCAAs

Weinstein's best 500 Free time of 4:29.38 is actually 3 seconds faster than Bella Sims' winning time at this year's NCAAs, and would have topped Runge's #1 spot of 4:31.90 i on Cal's all-time list

And how about 2025 top recruit Alex Shackell's 1:50.15 which would have WON the 200 Fly title at 2024 NCAAs, not to mention surpassing Katie McLaughlin's #1 time of 1:51.09 on Cal's list (keeping fingers crossed that she will stick with her commitment)!

In the 100 Fly, Shackell's 49.49 also outdoes McLaughlin's 49.97 (top time on our All-Time list, and would have claimed the runner-up spot at NCAA Champs.

Shackell's best of 1:42.23 in the 200 Free would have earned 4th place at NCAAs this year

You're right. Think she only stayed one year & left. She was a 2014-15 recruit. Maybe she was impacted by coach Teri?

Hey now. RollOnYouAll reminds me of legendary supersaiyanposter of Cal Swimming, Ursus Arctos Californicus, who was lost to us when the Tericalypse really started collapsing our recruiting.

Cierra possibly heard (or heard of) Teri's maltreatment of one or more teammates and that really soured her on Cal.

.

I do miss UAC postings and hope he/she return some days. I don't though UAC left because of coach Teri's actions but more because of complaints from the peanut gallery who criticized him for postings of the signing/recruiting of swimmers at 'other' schools.

Margaux McDonald has announced her intent to use her 5th year with the Bears after graduating from Princeton this spring. She's a multi-time Ivy League champion in the 100/200 breast and 200 IM, and earned NCAA qualification this past year via her 1:56.9 200 IM.

She holds best times of 1:00.2/2:11.3 in the breaststrokes and 53.7/1:54.2 in the backstrokes along with her 200 IM, and is qualified for Trials in the 100 breast. Also worth noting she is a local to the East Bay, from Orinda/Miramonte HS.

With no one on Swimswam's "Top 20" or "Honorable Mentions" list, our iincoming Baby Bears still earn a spot in the Top 10 for the Women's Freshman Class of 2024, owing in part to a trio of internationals along with three "Best of the Rest" recruits.

From Swimswam:

Ranking The 2024 Women's Recruiting Classes: #5-8

BEST NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING RECRUITING CLASSES: WOMEN'S CLASS OF 2024

Previously Ranked:
  • #16 Georgia
  • #15 Virginia Tech
  • #14 Auburn
  • #13 Northwestern
  • #12 Indiana
  • #11 Florida
  • #10 Michigan
  • #9 Ohio State

#8 Wisconsin

#7 Cal

With the 2025 girls class loaded with the top domestic talent, Cal hit home runs at the international level for fall 2024. Mary-Ambre Moluh is one of the highlights of the class and has strong long course best times with a 54.08 in the 100 free, 2:01.76 in the 200 free, and 59.29 in the 100 back. She also represented France in Paris, posting solid relay splits with her 53.37 as her fastest 100 free.

Those convert to 47.27 in the 100, 1:46.81 in the 200, and 52.33 in the 100 back. She also has a SCM best time in the 100 back of a 57.36 that converts to a 51.67. That 100 freestyle is towards the top of the class, but as always with conversions there is a margin of error. Even with some error, it took a 47.75 to make the 'B' final at 2024 NCAAs and a 47.33 to 'A' final so she brings in instant points there in addition to huge relay value as Cal had no sub-48 100 freestylers this past season. Her 100 back is also big, especially once Isabelle Stadden finishes up her 5th year at the end of this year. It took a 51.55 to get a 2nd swim in the 100 back.

Fellow French Olympian Lilou Ressencourt has two years of eligibility but will make an impact during her time. She has LCM best times of 58.48 in the 100 fly and 2:09.30 in the 200 fly, which convert to a 51.42 in the 100 and 1:53.96 in the 200. That 100 conversion is on the border of finaling at NCAAs while her 200 is in B final range and on the border of making the A final.

Canada's Mia West enters with best times of a 55.58 in the LCM 100 free, 2:00.48 in the 200 free, and 59.89 in the 100 fly. She has some SCY experience which is helpful as far as race planning but it is outdated for this analysis. Her 100 free and 100 fly are the biggest potential impacts, with conversions of 48.63 in the 100 free and 52.69 in the 100 fly. With the combination of Moluh, Rssencourt, and West, they have relay options.

Finley Anderson (53.3 and 1:53.6) and Adriana Smith (52.8/1:56.1) bring in backstroke depth that will be key, especially after Stadden's departure. It also grows the group that was Stadden on her own at the top.

Fifth years Maya Geringer and Margaux McDonald boost the team for the upcoming season. Both swam at 2024 NCAAs and Geringer scored in the 1650 free in all four years at NCAAs as well.

#6 Louisville
#5 Stanford

Interesting post by Associate Head Coach Josh Huger on social media today referencing Swimswam's Ranking The 2024 Women's Recruiting Classes: #5-8 article:

With maybe a surprise or two along the way""

Summer McIntosh (2024? 2025?) is apparently not in the picture, at least according to this article:

What did Summer McIntosh do over school vacation? The Canadian teen won 3 golds and a silver

"McIntosh will begin thinking about what's next, including where she will attend college.
One thing is already decided: It won't be for an NCAA program in the United States."

However, would it be completely unrealistic to hope for Katie Grimes instead (#1 recruit in the incoming 2024 class)??! Had originally thought that Grimes might turn pro, but perhaps not, judging from swan's post below, and this article:

Katie Grimes: 5 facts about Team USA's teenage silver medalist set to make Olympic history in the pool and open water

"At 18 years old, Grimes just graduated from high school and is a coveted recruit with swimming news site SwimSwam ranking her as the top high school swimmer last year.
Grimes recently told For The Win she's made a decision on college, but she also said she'll likely wait until after the Olympics to announce it."

The Bear's will have a terrific class in 2025 if all of the verbal commits show up in Sept 2025.

The incoming class of 2024 lacks the star power and depth of the 2025 class, but features several high ranking international talents including two swimmers who will be representing France in the 2024 Olympic Games, butterflyer Lilou Ressencourt and sprint backstroker Mary-Ambre Moluh.

Of note, Katie Grimes. the top recruit in the 2024 class has yet to reveal her colligiate plans. I expect Cal to be in the mix for her talents, but I understand her handlers are looking for significant NIL $.

Stay tuned...

I just noticed sometning quite interesting in the Cal student directory.
"Grimes, Katie Eileen" is listed.
Certainly, this could merely be a move to keep her options open, and I haven't checked the Texas, Virginia, Florida, etc. student directories either.
We will know soon enough.
