LET'S GOOOOOO!!!

Some outstanding work out of the bullpen. Early fireworks. Nice win in freezing wind in Palo Alto, 2 days after flying home and taking 2 out of 3 at Univ Houston .

I am going to enjoy this success and hope it continues. Apart from water sports and rugby the Bear fans have not had a lot to celebrate recently. I am sure I am forgetting a few sports and teams for which I apologize ahead of the kind reminders that may be posted.
I love baseball and look forward to watching the Bears play here in Utah later this season. Right now we are having a major snow storm so the idea of sitting in a baseball stadium with the warm sun hitting me while cheering for the Bears is a nice vision.
Thanks for the hard work and great early season performance.
Go Bears!

Baseball vs Stanford on 2/21/2023 - Box Score - California Golden Bears Athletics (calbears.com)

CAL won despite

3 errors
&
13 strikeouts

Too many games were lost last year when the bullpen was blown up.
Not this time....against some really good hitters.

GO BEARS!!!

I think more than anything, a good bullpen separates the elite teams vs the not-so-much's. Stanford has guys out of the pen who will be in AAA/MLB someday. Specialist-types.
I think Cal generally recruits the best arms they can get, regardless of attributes. Maybe there is one or two pen guys who are situational pitchers. But the majority are simply D1 arms who aren't starting pitcher material.

I am right here! So no matter the outcome of the standings in conference and if this team even makes it in the Pac 12 tournament. You are going to throw a party for a mid-week non conference game? Take the wind blown grand slam out of the picture. I was there, and it was wind blown! This lineup faced mid-week pitching, till the pen came in to record 13K's. Maybe save the cake and ice cream for later in the season.

True test comes next weekend, when they will face OU and Miss State. Ohio State split with UConn, so I am sure they will not be a pushover. But should not look past this weekend when UConn and Cal Poly come to town.

Oh and lets not forget this team will have to contend the first series in conference against U of A, who took down then #2 Tenn, who Tony Vitello said had SEC talent, speaking of U of A, whatever that means. You do know who Tony Vitello is?? I am sure you will Google it.

A W is a W, but not one to hang a whole season on!

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you could "take" a big play "out of the picture." Can we do that when we lose, too?

I also didn't realize that the wind ONLY kicked up right at the moment that the bat connected with the ball on that grand slam. No one else had the opportunity to have a play affected by the wind. Amazing coincidence. Thank you for the first-hand report.

Soto just homered in the 8th vs Cal Poly.
Must have been the wind though. And nobody hung the whole season on one game. You're the guy who continually looks for an angle you can whine about.
IIRC Cal took down #2 Stanford. So who's better, Tennessee or Stanford? It's early in the season and the Bears are surprising based on how they were picked preseason. Enjoy it. Based on past experience, yes it can change. But that doesn't mean you have to make excuses for a quality win.

Oops!

So the fact that his attempt to disrespect PAC baseball in a live in game TV interview, makes his so called self imposed suspension even better. He said U of A had SEC talent, because his team was getting worked. Tenn also lost to Grand Canyon in the same weekend. Tenn is a good team, however, they are not liked because of their HC!.

Pretty sure the rainout was a huge relief to Baller. Would be difficult to see his alma mater beaten by a team that he constantly disparages as being weak.

When was the last time this program made a ranking in the top 25??

When was this program in the CWS??

Sorry, but just beating Stanford in a mid-week game is not what makes a season.

Yeah this weekend is going to be big. Win 2 would be HUGE. All 3 teams games are winnable. (Uconn split with OSU i believe). It'll come down to available arms. We probably should position our best starter against the weakest of the three teams, then hope to win one of the other 2 games.

Wasn't it? It seems to me that you wanted to go to Cal, but didn't get in. However, you claim to have "ties" to Cal. So, did your high school frenemy (nemesis), the one that took the starting position from you, and/or dated the girl you liked get in to Cal? And maybe he even PLAYED at Cal? So, after college, you sought a job at Stanford to 'enable' you to feel like you have an affiliation with Stanford?

No offense intended. None of the above is bad or negative in any way. It's just my attempt at an amateur profile of Baller4, given all of the commentary in the posts (that I've read, which admittedly aren't many) you've contributed to this board. It's pretty close to spot on, no?

To answer your first two questions: No idea/don't care. It was both when I was a student. But, I don't pay much attention to Cal baseball anymore, as life is busy and time is short.

I don't think anyone here has claimed that beating Stanford in a mid-week game means Cal will have a College World Series winning season. From what I've read on this board, people seem to be excited and hope to see the team continue to play well throughout the season.

I think Baller's job was Ball Boy for the Stanford team when Esquer was a player. That's why he's so completely devoted to him. No matter that he never went to college himself.

So now this thing crawls under his rock. The one who said that Neu was the answer and the one who was going to bring a NC to Cal's baseball program. Not once has this thing come on here to defend the 6 years of nothing. Like SoCalie, both would dream of playing intercollegiate sports, but just was not good enough to make it past the JV team at their HS. So they cling and stroke a piece of paper as their claim to fame.

Please break down all the good things that have happened to the program since Esquer has left. How many times has Cal been ranked in the top 20???? 0. Has Cal made it the post season??????/ Once. Can't make it the CWS without having your season end at the conclusion of conference play. But according to this menso. Neu was always the answer.

So I laugh when you both rub your bellies and scratch your bald heads. Sorry, but my baseball experience is more than both of yours JV team heroics! Why are both of you not here in Frisco? Oh wait, as SoCallie puts it, no time, yet he has the time to pay for a premium subscription since he is the person who knows it all about everything.

What a bunch of Mooks!!!!! It's always interesting when you walk away, and what you find when you come back. I guess your wingman did a Maverick on you and left you hanging!!!! LOL!!!! You thought you had an ally, yet, this is the same blowhard who does not have enough cajones to back up his ultimate choice for Cal Baseball domination?? How is that going micOSO Dorado with Neu leading this charge????

So I guess if no one mentions anything about the three series defeats in the past three weeks. It is like it never happened???? LOL!!! It's like Voldemort... "He who must not be named"

So leaving Frisco, there were a few takeaways on how conference play could go. However watching that U of A series erased all those takeaways. Team showed some grit against Oklahoma and Miss State. Someone mentioned "they were enjoying it(winning) because the past has shown it will not last". Good call!

It's not going to get easier and there is no guarantee that Cal will win that Utah series. After spending the weekend in AZ watching ASU/UofA series. Willy Bloomquist seems to be doing something right in Tempe. First time HC. He has surrounded himself with coaching talent. Unlike Neu, who has had the same staff that really has not done anything impressive. Not sure why he has not made changes, but I guess his baseball genius should rub off on everyone. According to the blowhard!

Talking to some scouts in AZ, very interesting opinions on Cal while discussing the conference. "Not a winning tradition at all". "I guess they have a hard time adopting a winning tradition, look at what is going on at Stanford". Also ran into an ex Cal baseball player who said that "It is a shame, Cal used to have some relevance in the conference discussion, but the way I see it now. Seems like that has changed".

No margin for error now!

Sooooooooo now I understand why you all had a party over this mid-week win!!!!!! Talk about a lifeles coaching staff that bleeds into the team. Neu is not very present, and Noah Jackson does next to nothing while standing at the edge of the dugout. No gathering of the team during the game when things started to get out of hand, and there was still an opportunity to stay in it and possibly win last night's game.

Not even the heckling somewhat of a student section could help. I wonder how many players will enter the transfer portal after this season. It's a waste of Rodney Green's talent!!
