Not a good sign regarding Alex Shakell which was posted in the comment section of the 2024 ranking story (Cal #11) by the admin of swimswam Braden Keith
Quote:

But worth acknowledging that Alex Shackell removed Cal from her bio (though she didn't take down her commitment picture).

Still a year away from signing but Texas's money talk is loud & clear.. I'm just saying.8-(!

Boo Hoo looks like Alex Shackell has decommitted from Cal! Wonder what happened to make all of the Shackells leave.

I might be overly optimistic, but I took Alex's announcement as her sitting out on college for a year and exploring her options. At least, I'm glad that she's not indicting the program or staff in her statement (and clearly tried to do the opposite by saying this wasn't a reflection of her initial verbal).

Maybe she follows her brothers to Texas, stays closer to home, or who knows, ends up at Cal -- she was the first domino to fall (at least in terms of announcing her commitment) with O'Dell, Weinstein, and the rest of a highly loaded class (McDevitt, Scott, Cosgrove, Aquino, and Jia), so maybe she's still interested in building a program back up with the team. But if not -- and not to discount the impact of a talent like her -- hope the future is still bright for the program, what with 2026 recruits starting to verbal now as well.

Freestyler Martin Wrede from Germany (SwimCloud profile, #50 in the class) has announced his commitment to Cal. He's ranked among the 2025 class, so assuming he comes to Berkeley next fall (but not certain). Welcome!

SwimSwam write-up: German Sprinter Martin Wrede Verbally Commits to Cal for 2025-26
Quote:

Wrede's 100 free is the 2nd-fastest LCM time in the class of 2025. Only Maximus Williamson has been faster, and that was in 2023 at the World Junior Championships. Wrede ranks among the top 50 freestylers in the cohort, too.
Best LCM times (converted):
  • 50 free 22.71 (19.73)
  • 100 free 48.75 (42.47)
  • 200 free 1:52.33 (1:38.31)

Wrede will join Caiden Bowers, Dar Lavrenko, Ian Platts-Mills, Julien Rousseau, Kenneth Barnicle, Matteo Palmisani, Norvin Clontz, Ryan Erisman, and Max Goettsch in Berkeley next fall.

Camille Henveaux announced her commitment to the Bears last week. Former postgrad Lucas' younger sister, has represented Belgium on the international stage and seems to focus on mid-distance free (2:01/4:17/8:52 best times across the 200/400/800 distances).

All domestic recruits have signed and are recognized by the Cal Swim social media. Usually a bit trickier with international recruits as they undergo additional compliance checks, visa clearance etc.

Possibly Daniel Wiffen (Ireland) will be joining twin brother Nathan in 2025-2026. Who is Daniel Wiffen? Only the reigning Olympian Gold medalist in the 800m. He is currently visiting Cal with brother and when approached he told others if he attend college "only CAL" was his reply. The peanut gallery is going bonkers if he gets in because he has swam 'professionally' however that didn't stop Tomac (Cal also) from being eligible this year because he swam in the same professional league!

That would be amazing. If the NCAA allows him to swim, pretty sure Daniel will join his brother at Cal. The main difference between him and Tomac with the NCAA is money earned.

Daniel liked my tweet immediately

The addition of Tomac and the return of Lucas Henveaux this spring put Cal in a solid position to grab another national championship in Federal Way in March, despite their current #5 ranking.

Moraga,
I spoke to the Irish Wiffen twins at the USC meet, and they both appeared excited about the opportunity to attend Cal starting in the 2025 Fall. I happened to mention my golf related visits to Ireland and they revealed they are members at Royal County Down and Royal Portrush, two of the top golf courses in the world. Very well-spoken young men. Lucas Henveaux is also a keen golfer, having played on scholarship in the US before returning his focus on swimming.

SwimSwam #13 Elle Scott announced her commitment to the Bears. Breaststroker from Charlotte coming out of SwimMAC, with sprint free relay potential and adding additional depth in fly and IM. Welcome!!
CAL RACKS UP ANOTHER VERBAL COMMITMENT FOR 2025-26: THE HIGHLY VERSATILE #13 ELLE SCOTT

Quote:

Best SCY times:
  • 100 breast 1:00.19
  • 200 breast 2:10.04
  • 200 IM 1:57.39
  • 400 IM 4:14.57
  • 200 free 1:47.82
  • 100 free 49.73
  • 50 free 23.36
  • 100 fly 53.41
A 2022 National Select Camp attendee, Scott will join #1 Alex Shackell, #3 Claire Weinstein, and "Best of the Rest" Gracyn Aquino on the Golden Bears' roster in the fall of 2025. She would have scored at the 2023 ACC Championships in the B finals of the 200 IM, 100 breast, and 200 breast.

Very promising time drops from #9 Elle Scott!

The quoted times posted by HBear above were from a Swimswam article published back in October 2023.

As of February 2025, Scott has improved as follows:

100 breast - 1:00.19 -> 58.56
200 breast - 2:10.04 -> 2:08.62
200 IM - 1:57.39 -> 1:56.25
200 free - 1:47.82 -> 1:46.94
100 free - 49.73 -> 49.23
50 free - 23.36 -> 22.92
100 fly - 53.41 -> 52.41

Elle Scott's 58.56 in the 100 Breast handily outdoes the previous "best in class" time of 59.33 by incoming furd Addie Robillard, 59.53 by UVa commit Raya Mellott, and fellow baby bear Teagan O'Dell's 59.73

Would rank #2 on Cal's All-Time Top 10 list if Scott had swum this time in the blue & gold uniform! (behind Ema Rajic's 58.45 set back in 2021)

Elle Scott Breaks National High School Record in 100 Breaststroke at North Carolina State Meet

https://swimswam.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/478065276_18453705172068893_8480726176837824805_n.jpeg

"US Junior National Team member Elle Scott was the star of the meet, setting a new National Record for independent high school swimmers in the 100 breaststroke final.

She swam 58.56 in prelims to break the record before marking 58.93 in finals at the end of a long day of racing, with both prelims and finals coming on the same day.

Her heats swim broke the record that was set in 2018 by Alex Walsh of Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, done when she was just a sophomore.

She also picked up wins at the meet as the breaststroke leg of Charlotte Country Day's 200 medley relay, where she split 27.42 on the breaststroke leg.

Scott also won the 200 IM in 1:56.60, and anchored the winning 400 free relay at the end of the meet with a 48.87 closing split.

Scott is committed to swim at Cal next season and is already almost a second clear of the Golden Bears' best breaststroker this season Margaux McDonald, who swam 59.53 at ACCs last week."

==========

Men:

"With Ravenscroft and Charlotte Latin the heavy favorites on paper, whichever team won the boys' 400 free relay would take the meet.
The two teams used very different lineup strategies. Ravenscroft led off with their best, Mattaus Rammel, and jumped out to a big lead. Charlotte Latin did just enough to give their best swimmer, Junior National Team member Norvin Clontz, a shot at the end.
But ultimately, Ravenscroft senior Drew Davis, racing from the front, had just enough to hold off Clontz's 44.58 split at the touch.

Charlotte Latin started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley in 1:32.07, with a team of David Sammons (23.50 backstroke), Clontz (25.08 breaststroke), Bryce Spangler (22.66 fly), and Thomas Greathouse (20.83 free) winning by a second-and-a-half over Ravenscroft

Clontz, meanwhile, picked up a win in the 200 free in 1:36.67, an All-America time, over Charlotte Country Day sophomore Santi Alzate-Celin (1:39.00).

In the 500 free later in the session, Alzate-Celin got his clapback, winning in 4:23.83 to Clontz's 4:25.93."

"Durham Academy's Ian Platts-Mills won the 200 IM in 1:47.34, setting a new NCISAA Record. That was his first individual state title in his last meet before matriculating to Cal in the fall. He also finished 2nd in the 100 back behind Bartee."

From my understanding, it seems as the Shackell parents are a nightmare to deal with. Helicopter parenting? Make that lawnmower parents.

I think this might have been a major bullet dodged for our coaching staff despite their previous relationship with the family.

TOP 20 SWIMMERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2025

2. Teagan O'Dell (Previous Rank: #2) Mission Viejo Nadadores Santa Margarita Catholic High School Chino Hills, CA **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 100 back: 50.70 (best in class)
  • 200 back: 1:49.16 (best in class)
  • 200 IM: 1:52.61 (best in class)
  • 400 IM: 4:05.22 (best in class)
  • 200 free: 1:42.27
  • 100 free: 47.74
  • 50 free: 22.14
  • 500 free: 4:39.29
  • 100 breast: 59.73
  • 200 breast: 2:10.69
  • 100 fly: 51.99
  • 200 fly: 1:57.32
O'Dell is the fastest swimmer in the class in four events and owns times quick enough for the NCAA 'A' final in three. She is capable of making the top eight right now in the 200 free (1:42.27), 200 back (1:49.16) and 200 IM (1:52.61), and also leads the class in the 100 back (50.70) and 400 IM (4:05.22). In the 2024-25 short course season, O'Dell made noted improvements in all of her primary events outside of the 400 IM, including a near two-second drop in the 200 back, nearly a second drop in the 200 IM, a full second drop in the 200 free, and dropping half a second to become a sub-48 swimmer in the 100 free. In addition to being one of the top point-scorers at NCAAs, likely with the 200 IM, 100 back and 200 back on her schedule, she'll also be a key relay player. Not only is she solid in the 50 free (22.14), strong in the 100 free and elite in the 200 free and 100 back, her 50 back is sneaky good as well, having been as fast as 24.08 in yards and having been a finalist at the 2023 World Juniors in the event in long course. To top things off, she could realistically swim just about any event at a dual meet and win, with times in the 500 free, 100/200 breast and 100/200 fly that rival some of this class' single stroke specialists.

3. Claire Weinstein (Previous Rank: #3) Sandpipers of Nevada Las Vegas, NV **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 200 free: 1:41.10 (best in class)
  • 500 free: 4:29.38 (best in class)
  • 1000 free: 9:17.85 (best in class)
  • 1650 free: 15:52.84 (best in class) [15:51.64 altitude adjusted]
  • 100 free: 47.95
  • 50 free: 23.00
  • 400 IM: 4:07.72
  • 200 IM: 1:58.70
  • 200 fly: 1:58.63
  • 100 fly: 53.91
  • 200 back: 1:57.60
  • 100 breast: 1:00.53
After an incredible performance at U.S. Nationals, it's tough to leave Weinstein at #3 in these rankings, but as a distance freestyler, her value is somewhat limited due to the precedence placed on sprinting in the NCAA Championship format. However, Weinstein will have a very good chance of sweeping the 200, 500 and 1650 free throughout her NCAA career. Her lifetime best in the 500 free (4:29.38) would've won the NCAA title last season and makes her the fastest swimmer in the class by a whopping seven seconds, while her 200 free best of 1:41.10 would've placed 4th in the tight 2025 NCAA 'A' final. In the 1650 free, her personal best of 15:52.84 was set all the way back in December 2021, but it still would've been 10th at the NCAA Championships and makes her the only swimmer sub-16 in the class. However, after dropping times of 8:19.67 in the 800 free and 16:01.96 in the 1500 free in the long course pool at U.S. Nationals, the Sandpipers of Nevada star is likely capable of pushing for a top finish at NCAAsshe did beat the 2025 NCAA champion in the mile, Jillian Cox, head-to-head at Nationals. Weinstein is also starting to show an improved 100 free, making the 'A' final at Nationals and clocking 53.72, while in short course, she cracked 48 seconds in 47.95, so she'll be able to be relied upon on Cal's 400 free relay moving forward

5. Annie Jia (Previous Rank: #8) Upper Dublin Aquatic Club Hatboro Horsham Sr High School Ambler, PA **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 100 fly: 50.35
  • 100 free: 48.07
  • 200 free: 1:45.79
  • 50 free: 22.05
  • 200 IM: 1:57.70
  • 200 fly: 1:56.12
  • 100 back: 53.07
  • 100 breast: 1:01.69
Jia jumps up into the top five in the class re-rank after an explosive senior year that was highlighted by her busting through the 51-second barrier in the 100 fly. At Winter Juniors East, she brought her best time down from 51.09 to 50.35, placing a close 2nd to Charlotte Crush while solidifying herself as the 2nd-fastest in the class behind Alex Shackell. The swim also puts her nearly seven-tenths under what it took to make the top eight at NCAAs last season (51.02), and would've placed 5th in the 2025 final. Jia backed that swim up by going 51.01 one week later and then 50.65 in mid-March. Jia also leveled up with additional lifetime bests in the 50 free (22.05), 100 free (48.07), 100 back (53.07) and 200 IM (1:57.70) at Winter Juniors, while the following week at the UD Cardinal Classic, she set a best of 1:45.79 in the 200 free. In terms of piecing together an NCAA schedule, it's 100 fly, 100 free, and then either the 50 free or 200 IM for Jia, but of equal importance is the value she'll bring to Cal's relayswhich is only amplified with Alex Shackell reneging on her commitment and heading to Indiana. Jia will be a key piece on the Bears' relays throughout her career, and she'll be a welcome addition on the fly leg of the medley relays this year.

12. Elle Scott (Previous Rank: #9) SwimMAC Carolina Charlotte Country Day School Charlotte, NC **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 100 breast: 58.56 (best in class)
  • 200 breast: 2:08.62
  • 200 IM: 1:56.25
  • 400 IM: 4:14.57
  • 100 fly: 52.41
  • 200 free: 1:46.94
  • 100 free: 49.23
  • 50 free: 22.92
  • 100 back: 54.28
Scott rocketed to the top of the class in the 100 breast last season, putting up three sub-59 swims after coming in with a PB of 59.54. She clocked 58.94 in November, and then after winning Winter Juniors East in 59.13, blasted a time of 58.56 in the prelims of the NCISAA D1 State Championships before winning the final in 58.93. That 58.56 clocking not only puts her atop the class as the lone swimmer sub-59, but puts her within 26 one-hundredths of making the NCAA 'A' final, with three swimmers from last year's top eight graduating. Scott also knocked her 200 breast best time down from 2:10.04 to 2:08.62, within a tenth of NCAA scoring range, and in the 200 IM, she matched her PB to the hundredth last season in 1:56.25, which remains under the cutline. She's also strong in the 50, 100 and 200 free for relay purposes, and has a sneaky-good 100 fly at 52.41. For medley relays, Cal will be in good hands after she threw down a 26.74 50 breast leg at Winter Juniors East.

18. Ella Cosgrove (Previous Rank: 19) Scottsdale Aquatic Club Catalina Foothills High School Tucson, AZ **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 500 free: 4:37.98
  • 1000 free: 9:30.14
  • 1650 free: 16:19.08
  • 200 free: 1:45.07
  • 100 free: 49.05
  • 100 back: 54.34
  • 200 back: 1:56.43
  • 50 free: 23.05
Outside of the 1650 free, which she didn't race, and the 50 free, which she tied, Cosgrove improved her best times in all of her key events last season, headlined by her 500 free, which got into NCAA scoring range when she dropped a time of 4:37.98 at Winter Juniors East. Cosgrove also dropped numerous times in the 200 free, going 1:45.39 at Winter Juniors and then setting a PB of 1:45.07 at the Austin Sectionals in March. At that same meet, she set a massive PB of 9:30.14 in the 1000 free, which, although it's not a championship event, would've ranked in the top five in the NCAA last season. She's also coming off setting lifetime bests in the 200 free (1:595.7), 400 free (4:11.64) and 800 free (8:35.72) in long course at the Canadian Swimming Trials, earning her a spot on the World Championship team.

A member of Cal's stacked recruiting class, Cosgrove will have an incredible training partner in Claire Weinstein, as the two will instantly become the Bears' top two 500 freestylers and will likely slot into the Bears' 800 free relay (which could be 75% freshmen). Based on the success we've seen Cosgrove have in the 1000/LCM 800 free, it will be intriguing to see if she opts to race the 1650 free in college, as her 9:30 best time in the 1000 is on pace for something around 15:40 in the mile, which would've placed 3rd at NCAAs. If not, we could easily see her in the 200 back or 100 free, having raced both at the Canadian Trials in long course and set respective bests of 1:56.43 and 49.05 last season in yards.

TOP 20 SWIMMERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2025

16. Ryan Erisman (Previous Rank: HM) Laker Swimming Windermere High School Windermere, FL **Verbally committed to Cal**

Best Times:
  • 1650 free: 14:57.76
  • 500 free: 4:14.50
  • 1000 free: 9:03.80
  • 200 free: 1:36.13
  • 100 free: 44.40
  • 400 IM: 3:46.35
  • 200 IM: 1:47.60
  • 200 fly: 1:46.59
Erisman suffers slightly from this class being so deep in his best events in yards, but he has had some big drops this year. He's taken five seconds off his 500 to sit just outside the 2025 invite time and has a sub-15 mile to go with that after hacking off 27 seconds this year. Having made our way-too-early ranks in part due to his versatility, Erisman has zeroed in on the freestyles in his senior season. His IMs are still intriguing, especially the 400 IM, where we often see big drops in college, and he's dropped two seconds this year, but his main focus for a third event might be the 200 freestyle. He's not dropped in the event since last years rankings, but also did not swim it at Winter Juniors East, where he swam big PBs in the 500 and mile. He did split 1:34.8 anchoring Lakeside's relay there, so definitely has space to drop.

He's had a phenomenal long course season, and times of 1:47.52/3:46.01 in the 200/400 free indicate that there is much more to come in yards, and he may well be Cal's top distance freestyler for next year. The 3:46.0 is simply incredible in the 400 free, and a big reason why he ends up this ranked high. It wouldn't be a shock to see him develop into a two-event scorer even in his freshman year, especially when you consider the progress Lucas Henveaux, a similar swimmer, made under Dave Durden.

19. Kenneth Barnicle (Previous Rank: HM) Greater Somerset County YMCA West Morris Mendham High School Mendham, NJ **Verbally committed to Cal**

Best Times:
  • 100 free: 43.04
  • 200 free: 1:35.15
  • 100 fly: 47.66
  • 100 back: 46.99
  • 200 back: 1:43.22
  • 200 IM: 1:45.07
Barnicle is an incredibly versatile swimmer and suffers slightly from being a jack of all trades here. His 100 freestyle is joint-4th in the class and 43.0 as a high schooler is incredibly quick, but he doesn't have another event on par with right now, but rather a couple just below. He's sub-47 in the 100 backstroke and dropped two seconds in the 200 IM this year to go 1:45.0, both of which rank in the top-10 in the class. He dropped time in all of his main events this year, with several PBs this calendar year too which is an encouraging sign.
With his speed in the 100, which featured a 20.7 opening split, you have to think he can be faster than 20.54 in the 50. With the assumption that he can crack 20 seconds and become a potential relay piece for Cal, he's a solid pick here.

Honorable Mentions

Ian Platts-Mill (Previous Rank: BOTR) North Caroline Aquatic Club Durham Academy Chapel Hill, NC **Verbally committed to Cal**

Best Times:
  • 1650 free: 15:01.86
  • 400 IM: 3:45.23
  • 200 IM: 1:47.34
  • 500 free: 4:23.09
  • 200 free: 1:37.77
  • 200 back: 1:44.99
15:01 in the mile and 3:45 in the 400 IM would normally be enough for a top-20 spot, but with the depth in both events this year, he only ranks eighth and sixth. He doesn't yet have a third event on the calibre of those two, with his 200 IM of 1:47.34 ranking the closest. His 400 is 4.7 seconds quicker than last season, he's dropped 13.5 seconds off his mile, and he's taken chunks out of his 200 and 500 free bests as well. He would have scored in his two best events at last year's ACCs, in events where Cal finds itself without many proven NCAA scorers.

Seems like a slew of international swimmers are now signing with USA colleges? What is the status of Daniel Wiffen? Is Cal pursuing him, since his twin brother will be swimming for Cal this year. Any other international swimmers CAL is pursing (for the insiders)?
