Pre-scratch psych sheets are linked: https://swimswam.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/2025-acc-championship-psych-sheet-final.pdf

Each team is allowed to bring 21 athletes.

Women's ACC roster: Stephanie Akakabota, Finley Anderson, Morgan Brophy, Ava Chavez, Rebecca Ciancaglini, Lizzy Cook, Jessica Davis, Ariana Drake, Maya Geringer, Alicia Henry, Camille Henveaux, Abby Herscu, Ella Mazurek, Margaux McDonald, Mary-Ambre Moluh, Lea Polonsky, Jane Raffetto, Lilou Ressencourt, Adriana Smith, Isabelle Stadden, McKenna Stone, Mia West, Violet Williamson

Men's ACC roster: Jack Alexy, Lucca Battaglini, Jack Clark, Brooks Curry*, Trent Frandson, Scotty Garman, Robin Hanson, Lucas Henveaux, Matthew Jensen, Gabe Jett, Keaton Jones, Roman Jones, Destin Lasco, Nans Mazellier, Humberto Najera, Yamato Okadome, Evan Petty, Hank Rivers, Dare Rose, Sean Swift, Josh Thai, Mewen Tomac, Geoffrey Vavitsas

Curry might have been the biggest surprise of all since he was entered in the transfer portal as a graduate student but had no intentions of racing this semester.

If I can count correctly, each roster has 23 names on it. Why only have 21 participants out of 45 men on Cal's team? Several of the 21 are divers, too.

Will Mia Kragh, Annika McEnroe & Fanni Fabian be able to redshirt and return next season? Are there members of the men's team subject to the same situation? What event does Brooks Curry swim out of curiousity?

I knew that the women's team would not be competitive this season in the ACC but I was surprised how the men's team might struggle in some events, too. Does Cal have a realistic shot at the men's ACC championship?

Wow Brook Curry on the team too.Is the 21 limit also applied to the NCAA too? Looks like Saleem and Appelbaum possibly NCAA scorers not on the roster. Edited: I see 4 divers each. My guess at NCAA two divers will probably be dropped & two swimmers might be added.
swimmer19

NCAA meet roster limits are 18 athletes and divers count as half. Many examples in previous years of top teams cutting qualified swimmers to bring a scoring diver.

ACC meet limit is 21 athletes and max of 18 swimmers, divers still counting as half. Men and women both have an extra swimmer that needs to be scratched prior to the meet starting.

In the PAC-12, teams were allowed 28 athletes at the meet but only 22 could score points.

Prior to the ACC psych sheet release I was looking forward to seeing if Durden would be able to add a potential NCAA scorer and, secondly, given the 18 swimmer limit, whether Durden would use the meet as a "last chance" qualifier to get guys qualifying times for NCAAs, or would he actually try to win the ACC title.

Well, my first question was answered by the addition of Brooks Curry, who I knew had some eligibility left. I was also aware of Curry being registered as a Berkeley student for some time. I had been told that there were a few ACC rules to satisfy, which we can now see were sucessfully addressed. Brooks has been part of the Cal swim family for a couple of years, he is well liked and is a terrific addition to the team.

As for the psych sheet, it appears that all of our star 5th years and seniors are entered with most having season best times that appear to meet expected qualifying hurdles; figure top 29/30 in an individual event.
We certainly have the fire power to win the ACCs, but I would expect the guys who are safely qualified would be getting a very minor taper, and thus not be at their peak.

So I see the staff trying to see if several guys who still need qualifying times can achieve them next week, hopefully without a full taper. I include Matt Jensen and Tyler, who are both former NCAA scorers, in the group looking to swim qualify times.

Potential NCAA qualifiers such as Matt Chai, Ziyad Saleem, Freddy Klein, Luca Gissendaner and Frank Applebaum have been left off of the ACC roster.

At NCAAs, Cal is allowed 18 slots, with divers counting a half slot per. So, if we are able to bring two potential scoring divers, we can only take 17 swimmers. I currently count 16 swimmers who have posted very likely qualifying times, and this is before Brooks Curry was added to the roster.

Since Matt Jensen, Robin Hanson, Luca Gissendaner, Frank Applebaum, Lucca Battaglini, Tyler Kopp and Trent Frandsen all have shots at achieving top 30 times, we will most likely be forced to leave several swimmers who have NCAA invite qualifying times at home.

Swan, as always, thanks for your knowledgeable input. Will be interesting to see what kind of times the team (and the rest of the country) put up as we progress throughout the conference meets.

Women's NCAA qualifiers should be more simple, but currently only have 6 guaranteed qualifiers: Moluh, Polonsky, Geringer, Stadden, Ressencourt, and Herscu.

Ava Chavez is 28th in the 200 free, but her time currently is squarely on last year's cut line. Might need to drop some more to ensure a guaranteed invite, but coaches are bringing her for the 800 free relay regardless. Same goes for Margaux McDonald (30th- 100 breast) and Lizzy Cook (33rd- 100 fly)

2024 individual qualifiers Akakabota, Brophy, Hazle, Henry, and Stone still have some work to do, but are within reach.

Swimmer19,
Thanks for your kind words.
As you note, there is little of the last minute drama surrounding our women's team as they prepare for the conference championships and NCAAs. Since the Virginia death star is such overwhelming favorite, I have focused my attention on the men this year. I expect with the Weinstein, O'Dell,Jia class arriving this fall, the Cal women will return as a top 3 program in the 2025/2026 season. Alex Shackell, the top rated recruit in the class, has announced her attention of delaying college, but I doubt she will swim at Cal, given the actions of her two brothers.

On the men's side, this year's NCAAs should be extremely competitive with both Texas and Indiana being viewed as co-favorites for most of the season. Both programs have benefitted from recent transfers. Texas adding Rex Maurer from Stanford, Hubert Kos from ASU and Chris Guiliano from Notre Dame. Indiana added top talents Owen McDonald from ASU and Casper Corbeau from the Horns. I understand that the Bears were quite interested in Guiliano, but simply could not compete financially with the deep pockets of Texas NIL backers.

The 2024/2025 NCAAs will be held in Tacoma this year and will be the final college meet for an outstanding group of Cal 5th years and seniors, whom I have followed for the past five years. While the Bears have solid recruiting classes potentially joining in 2025 and 2026, it will be difficult to replace the NCAA production of Destin Lasco, Jack Alexy, Bjorn Seeliger, Dare Rose, Gabriel Jett and Lucas Henveaux. Quite simply, the NCAAs in March 2025 are the Bear's best chance for aother championship for the next several years.

I regret being the bearer of bad news, but....
it now appears there are remaining hurdles to surmount and Curry, most likely, will not be swimming at ACCs next week.
Fingers crossed for NCAAs, but IMHO the outlook is not promising.
swimmer19
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If my understanding is correct, will Curry be the swimmer that is scratched to meet the 18 swimmer limit?
swan
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That seems logical. Begs the question, how can Curry swim at NCAAs without a qualifying time, if somehow he attains eligibility between now and mid-March?
swimmer19
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Unfortunately I don't think that's possible. I know there are a couple of last chance meets during/following the week of 2/24 (Big 12, Men's Big Tens, Men's Ivies week) but unsure if coaching staff has plans to have swimmers race then.

The team left for Greensboro early this morning, per coach Huger's social media. Should hopefully get some answers soon enough...

Looking at the psych sheet Curry is still listed in the 50,100, & 200. Their is still some verbiage regarding Curry as though he is swimming. Was the psych sheet and write-up done prior to the current issues with Curry?

Good showing in the women's 500 free to start the morning - Geringer is 5th overall and will swim in the A final, with 3 Bears in the B final (Camille Henveaux 12th, Hazle 15th, Chavez 16th)

Men's 500 free have 3 swimmers in the A final (Lucas Henveaux top seed, Jett 4th, Kopp 6th) and 1 in the C final (Frandson 21st). Keaton Jones added 4 seconds and finished 27th.

Live results are back up.

Polonsky is 3rd heading into the women's 200 IM final tonight, with McDonald (13th) and West (19th) taking spots in the B and C final. The men's 200 IM will have Tomac (6th) and Lasco (8th) swimming next to each other in the A final.

Moluh makes the A final of the women's 50 free in 8th place, while Stone wins a swim off to be the last entrant into the B final (16th). Of note, Stone has officially qualified for NCAAs with her 21.88 swimoff time. Mazurek (T-35th) and Brophy (T-38th) both slightly added time.

Alexy takes the top seed in the men's 50 free, Seeliger not far behind in 5th. Battaglini just misses out on the A final in 9th, while Hanson is in the C final after losing a swimoff in a 5 way tie for the last spot in the B final.

Still no Brooks Curry (as previously mentioned, unlikely to swim due to issues with the ACC). Lots of our guys scratching events this morning…

Day 2 men's update:

Henveaux Sets ACC, Program Records In 500-Yard Freestyle
Graduate Student Becomes Cal's First-Ever ACC Individual Champion

GREENSBORO, N.C. California graduate student Lucas Henveaux set the school and ACC record in the 500-yard freestyle on Wednesday night, winning the first individual ACC championship in program history and helping the Golden Bears extend their lead in the team standings after the second day of the 2025 ACC Championship.

Henveaux, who set the Spieker Aquatics Complex record in the 500 free earlier this season, is now the fastest man ever to swim the event at Cal after reeling off a blistering 4:08.83 on Wednesday to eclipse the previous program highwater mark of 4:09.49 set by Trenton Julian in 2021. He also surpassed Stanford's Anton Ipsen, who set the previous ACC record in the 500 free with a time of 4:09.13 in 2018.

"We've been training absolutely great up in Berkeley," Henveaux told the ACC Network. "That distance crew is growing and we are training really hard. We have our eyes set on March. I'm really stoked with this result."

Senior Jack Alexy recorded a pair of runner-up finishes Wednesday. He was edged in the 50 freestyle by North Carolina State's Quintin McCarty and finished second with a time of 18.74 and also teamed with Luca Battaglini, Bjorn Seeliger and Destin Lasco to finish as the runner-up in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:15.10 the seventh-fastest mark ever at Cal in the event.

The Bears had three of the top four finishers in the 500 free, with senior Gabriel Jett taking second in a time of 4:10.27 and graduate student Tyler Kopp cracking Cal's all-time top-10 with a 4:12.46 that is good for seventh in program history.

Cal also amassed points with two A-finalists in the 200 individual medley as Lasco placed sixth at 1:42.80 and freshman Mewen Tomac was eighth at 1:43.29.

Graduate student Bjorn Seeliger finished eighth in the 50 free with a mark of 19.43.

The Bears head into the third day of the ACC Championship in first place in the team standings with 457 points. Stanford stands in second with 402 points. Thursday's schedule includes the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle.

Day 2 women's update:

Polonsky Reaches Podium In 200 Individual Medley
Bears Stand In Fourth Place After Second Day Of ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. Senior Leah Polonsky continued her postseason success in the 200-yard individual medley and the California 200 freestyle relay team cracked the program's all-time top-10 list during the second night of the 2025 ACC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship at Greensboro Aquatic Center on Wednesday.

Polonsky reached the podium with a third-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking in at a career-best time of 1:53.28. That mark moved her up to No. 6 all-time at Cal. Polonsky now has three podium finishes in conference meets in the 200 IM during her career, including a Pac-12 championship in the event in 2023.

The Golden Bears' quartet of Mary-Ambre Moluh, Isabelle Stadden, McKenna Stone and Mia West placed fifth in an ultra-competitive 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.69. That's the ninth-best time ever at Cal in the event and sixth-best in the country this season. Four of the five times ahead of them were four of the relay teams that out-touched them on Wednesday night.

Graduate transfer Maya Geringer advanced to the A-final of the 500 freestyle and placed fifth with a season-best time of 4:39.81. Moluh also earned a spot in the A-final of the 50 free and was seventh with a mark of 21.88.

With the first two days of the meet in the books, the Bears stand in fourth place in the team standings with 308.5 points. Thursday's action includes the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 individual medley and the 3-meter dive.

No. 3 Bears Extend Team Lead At ACC Championship
200 Freestyle Dominance Lifts Cal To Sizable Advantage

GREENSBORO, N.C. The No. 3 California men's swimming & diving team dominated the 200-yard freestyle event Thursday to help extend its overall team lead at the 2025 ACC Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Six different Golden Bears scored points in the event, led by a third-place finish by graduate student Lucas Henveaux, who registered the eighth-fastest time in the event ever at Cal (1:32.04). Senior Trent Frandson joined Henveaux in the A-final and placed sixth with a mark of 1:32.80.

Freshman Nans Mazellier qualified for the B-final during preliminaries and then ended up reeling off the seventh-fastest time ever at Cal in the event, winning in a time of 1:32.00. Senior Robin Hanson placed 11th (1:33.05), senior Jack Alexy was 12th (1:33.08) and sophomore Keaton Jones won the bonus final to place 17th (1:32.97).

The Bears scored 110.5 points alone in the 200 free.

Graduate student Dare Rose also reached the podium with a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly (44.55) and fellow graduate student Tyler Kopp won the B-final of the 400 individual medley (3:40.97).

Sophomore Humberto Najera was third in the B-final of the 400 IM (3:41.87).

After three days of the 2025 ACC Championship, Cal has a firm lead with 633.5 points. Stanford is in second place with 565 points while North Carolina is third with 517 points.

Friday is a busy day at the meet with the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, platform diving and the 400 medley relay. The Bears have four of the top eight seeds in the 100 backstroke and two of the top 6 in the 100 breaststroke.

No. 6 Bears Well-Represented In A-Finals At ACC Championship
Polonsky Reaches Podium For Second Consecutive Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. The No. 6 California women's swimming & diving team had an A-finalist in every event Thursday and stands in fourth place after the third day of the 2025 ACC Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Senior Leah Polonsky reached the podium for the second straight night after placing second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.98. She was one of three point-scorers in the event for the Golden Bears as sophomore Ava Chavez (13th, 1:44.93) and freshman Mia West (14th, 1:45.17) each advanced to the B-final.

Polonsky placed third in the 200 individual medley on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kathryn Hazle finished sixth in the 400 individual medley with a personal-best time of 4:07.63 while graduate student Lilou Ressencourt placed eighth in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 51.57. Seniors McKenna Stone (15th, 52.10) and Morgan Brophy (19th, 52.15) also scored points for the Bears in the 100 fly.

Four-time defending NCAA champion Virginia (744.5 points) has a firm advantage over Stanford (684) in the team standings while Louisville is in third place (575). Cal has 431.5 points.

Friday's schedule includes the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and the 400 medley relay. The Bears have two of the top five seeds in the 100 back with No. 3 Mary-Ambre Moluh and No. 5 Isabelle Stadden.

No. 3 Bears On Cusp Of Championship
Two More Podium Finishes Keep Bears Firmly In Lead

GREENSBORO, N.C. The No. 3 California men's swimming & diving team recorded a pair of podium finishes Friday and continues to lead the overall team standings heading into the final day of the 2025 ACC Championship at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Graduate student Dare Rose reached the podium for the second straight night after placing second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:39.47. Rose led for most of the race before being overtaken by winner Andrei Minakov of Stanford over the final 25 yards. Rose was third in the 100 butterfly on Thursday.

Senior Gabriel Jett just missed the podium in the 200 fly with a fourth-place finish at 1:40.28 - .16 out of third place.

Freshman Yamato Okadome registered his first career podium finish by taking third place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 51.12.

Sophomore Geoffrey Vavitsas advanced to the finals of the platform diving event and placed fifth (370.30 points) and freshman Mewen Tomac was also fifth in the 100 backstroke with the ninth-fastest time ever at Cal (45.16).

The Golden Bears' 400 medley relay team of Jett (backstroke), Okadome (breaststroke), Rose (butterfly) and Tomac (freestyle) placed second but with the 10th-fastest time ever at Cal (3:01.92).

Heading into the final day of the meet, the Bears continue to hold the lead as they look to become Cal's first program to win an ACC team championship. Cal leads with 885.5 points while Stanford is in second place at 822 points. North Carolina is in third place with 741.

Saturday's schedule includes the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 400 free relay.

Moluh Places Second In 100-Yard Backstroke
Freshman Is Runner-Up To Generational Swimmer Gretchen Walsh

GREENSBORO, N.C. It took arguably the best female collegiate swimmer of a generation to prevent California's Mary-Ambre Moluh from winning the Golden Bears' first individual ACC title on Friday night.

Moluh, a freshman who has already set the school record in the 100-yard backstroke, finished as the runner-up to Virginia's Gretchen Walsh in the event at the 2025 ACC Championship at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Moluh finished the race in 50.22, second to only Walsh's winning time of 48.95. Moluh reeled off a 49.68 in the event at the Minnesota Invitational in December to establish a new program record.

Graduate student Lilou Ressencourt placed sixth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.85 good for No. 8 all-time at Cal. She also placed eighth in the 100 fly on Thursday.

Grad transfer Margaux McDonald was the No. 5 qualifier in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.53, which is eighth in program history in the event. She went on to finish in sixth place in the A-final with a mark of 59.68.

The Bears' 400 medley relay team of Isabelle Stadden (backstroke), Leah Polonsky (breaststroke), Ressencourt (butterfly) and Moluh (freestyle) placed fourth with a season-best time of 3:29.18.

Heading into Saturday's final day of the meet, Cal stands in fourth place in the team standings with 637 points. Virginia leads the meet with 1040.5 points, followed by Stanford (852) and Louisville (682).

Saturday's schedule features the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, platform diving and the 400 freestyle relay.

What's kinda fun to see in this meet is just our incredible depth. Checking in on prelims this morning, in the men's 200 back we took 1st, 2nd, 5th and 7th. Stanford got one person in the top 10, at 4th place. That's pretty hard to beat.

Same depth in the 100 m free prelims this morning. Cal has three in the final (1,6 &8) while Stanford has one (6).

Lol. It's almost like coach Durden was toying with the furds Dan Schmeil kind of letting him hang around in second thinking they had a shot and then he just sticks it to him with the four in the top eight in the 200 I am plus three more in the second eight talk about stuffing someone I think these performances should give Cal a number one ranking going into the ncaa's from what I'm seeing on the qualifying times we've already got over like 18 swimmers qualified.

Congrats to both teams on a job well done in Greensboro. Looking ahead, qualifiers will now focus on NCAAs next month in Federal Way, WA.

The women's roster is mostly set in stone with the major conference meets completed. As the upcoming Big 12 meet shouldn't have significant impacts on national rankings, the following swimmers will be selected to compete at NCAAs, having posted top-35 times in the nation (editing due to input of SEC results, changing the projected roster):
- Mary-Ambre Moluh, McKenna Stone, Leah Polonsky, Maya Geringer, Isabelle Stadden, Finley Anderson, Abby Herscu, Lilou Ressencourt, Kathryn Hazle

Top 37 in each event was invited last year. Camille Henveaux is 40th in the 500 free, but there's a couple names ahead of her who may scratch the event. Same goes for Margaux McDonald (39th - 200 Breast). Ava Chavez is 41st in the 200 free but there should be a handful of swimmers scratching the event (Walshes, Huske, Bricker) which might get her in.

Coaches may need to take a relay swimmer or two - Mia West was on all 3 free relays

Some bears might need to attend last-chance meets to compete for extra points at NC. They have to either get the A cut for their main events or rise up in the ranking for their secondary events.

- Bjorn Seeliger (50 & 100 Free) is not yet qualified for 100 Back.
- Mewen Tomac (100 & 200 Back) still needs to qualify for 200 IM.
- Matthew Jensen(100 Free) & Keaton Jones(200 Back) also miss the marks for their secondary events.

Actually you can swim any event where you have a B cut once you're invited, meaning that all the swimmers you mentioned can swim all their main events provided they stay under the cutoff line in their top event, likely somewhere around 30. For the most part they look to be in pretty good position - only the Big Ten, Big 12, and maybe Ivy League are likely to have swimmers jump ahead of these guys, and all are much weaker than the ACC and SEC (Indiana and ASU are great teams but already have a lot of their guys qualified).
