Cal takes an early 1-0 lead on a Quiroga homerun.

Big games today against Oregon and CSF.

Oregon takes a 3-2 lead in the 1st inning.

Walk, Double, Homerun for the Ducks.

I missed the first inning trading the stock market. I saw Kaylee Pond just get thrown out at second base attempting to steal. Mika Lee did not attempt the double steal when the throw went through to 2B? Why?

The score is 5-3 Ducks after 3 innings.

I was checking out Cal's stats the other day and I noticed that Tianna Bell does not have an extra base hit on the season through 8 games. She is our cleanup hitter.

The only way that Cal can upset a team like Oregon is to outscore 'em. Elon Butler leads off with a single to center field but tries to stretch it out to a double and is thrown out easily. Bears must be on pace to set a NCAA softball record for runners be thrown out on the bases in 2025.

Cal should be tied now after Herrera's HR but it's 5-4 after four frames.

Yeah, the base running issues are head-scratching. It's been this way for years now. Herrera homers to cut the lead 5-4.

We're outhitting the Ducks 9 to 5 so hey, the bats are hot!

Elon Butler earns a leadoff walk in the T6th. After a popped sac bunt by Phillips, Butler is picked off of 1st base.
She has gotten on twice to lead off an inning and got thrown out on the bases each time. I thought that Lagi Quiroga was the worst base runner but Elon Butler is quickly closing the gap.

Nailyn Marshall has been picking up the ball on bunts and choppers to third but has not even made a throw to 1st base. She needs to play better defense than that. I do not believe that Cal has gotten anyone out that has laid down a bunt so far this season.

Oregon 5 Cal 4. Final.

I fear a baserunning issue before an RBI single and another before a home run was the difference between losing and upsetting a top-20 team. We also had a third baserunning issue (a pickoff) in the 6th!!!

If we cut down on the insane number of baserunning issues and errors (none today), we are also a top-20 team. However, this has been the Achilles' heel for years now. It's getting worse not better. And if I had a billion dollars, I'd be a billionaire. So...

De Nava continues to impress. The future is bright for her. Cal outhit Oregon 10-8.

Cal played right with Oregon today which is promising for the future. Frosh De Nava shuts out UO (11-1) for three innings. GO BEARS!

s71, don't hate the baserunners, chelsea is the worst 3rd base coach in the nation at literally any level...until she flip flops to coaching 1st base this **** is not gonna change

alyssa herrera is the team's best hitter this season, she needs to be a mainstay in the starting lineup if indeed it's based upon meritocracy perhaps starting at 1st base for bell/left field for pond at times or behind the plate for quiroga to give lagi's knees/legs a break...her swing is a thing of beauty with its timing & power!!...KABOOOOM

di nava is the team's best pitcher right now, in tempe she showed a strong assortment of multiple velocity pitches with accuracy (miranda is not a flamethrower), she is the only bears pitcher that consistently works from ahead in the count by throwing more strikes than balls...her dad tole me she wuz recruited by stanford but when she took her official visit to berkeley the decision wuz obvious, the diversity of the cal softball team is a recruiting plus according to multiple bearents that shocky visited with in the desert

Were the baserunning issues as bad as they looked on live stats in Tempe? It's easier to see them with the live video this weekend, but without it, you're interpreting a stat without context.

I'm just floored that this issue persists and instead of improving, it's getting worse.

I agree with you on De Nava. She sure has some nice spin on the ball. She threw a few riseballs that reminded me of Thorson.

fanatic, sent u a private message with some of my tempe thoughts

yeah the base running is even worse than the stats, players were thrown out on the bases by feet not inches

As Cat Osterman has shown, spin and placement will get the job done. We'd better hope DeNava can develop because the rest of the staff haven't shown any consistent success.

Reimers is really struggling this season. Cal finally got a bunt play thrown out at 1st base by Tianna Bell but then N Marshall completely missed a pop bunt to third and was given a hit.

Bears take a 2-1 lead but once again, Tianna Bell does not deliver with runners on 2nd & 3rd. She still does not have an extra base hit in her tenth game as the cleanup hitter. I would suggest a change. To be honest, the big three of Acacia Anders, Elon Butler & Tianna Bell have not been producing as expected. Lagi Quiroga and Alyssa Herrera have been hitting over .400 and have the most HRs. Mika Lee, Kaylee Pond & Mia Phillips have contributed, too. Cal is still trying to find an all-around third baseman that can field and hit.

elon butler just thrown out at 2nd base tryna steal in a tie 4-4 game

honestly at this point not having any 3rd base coach would be a better gameday strategy for base running

I didn't expect this season to start this way.

The pitching was always going to be a question mark, but with so many seasoned offensive threats and everyone except our third baseman returning defensively, I thought we'd be much better than we are. I hope we make the tournament, but it's questionable right now. Northwestern and Washington are going to be tough this weekend. We could be looking at a 7-6 start.

I'm going to have to seriously downgrade our seasonal chances. I thought this team was capable of winning 45 to 50 games despite losing RR. Seems like our team's hitters are getting scouted very well by the opposing coaches and the power is not showing up like I thought it would. We scored eight runs today which should be enough if you have a thorsen on the mound but we don't and we're forced and pressed to score more and more runs and that's probably causing us more problems. The only good thing we got going for us is we've got a 20-game stretch where we play teams that we have a much lower Massey rating. Plus we play our first three or four ACC series against historically bad softball programs. Unfortunately I think losing RR and not replacing her it was a mistake.
Schroeder71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I did not see the second half of the game because of women's bball. Based upon the box score, Cal made three errors that caused three unearned runs. CSF had 12 hits compared to Cal's 5. CSF is 9-4 and Cal is 6-4. The two senior pitchers are average at best which gives the Bears only one solid pitcher, Miranda De Nava. The offense is not clicking, the baserunning is a nightmare and the infield defense is unreliable. The pitching is mediocre at best.

For our head coach, Chelsea Spencer, not to hit the transfer portal will end up being the downfall of this season. The only way that the team can win games is to outscore their opposition. Right now-a winning season looks like it is in question and postseason play appears doubtful.

This is not the UW of recent years. They lost (portal) virtually all of the players eligible to return from last year's team and will be a rebuilding project of major proportions.

This is true. However, the freshman pitcher from Canada is going to be a star. Hansen also threw a no-no last night.

Should be a good battle.

Herrera long ball puts Cal up 3-0 in the 1st. Great start!
Schroeder71

Unbelievable! I missed most of the 1st inning action for the 3rd or 4th time. I have missed three of Quiroga's leadoff HRs and I also missed both of Herrera's long balls the last two days. Tonight, I had to eat my salmon dinner in between sporting events. Yesterday morning I was trading the market. This is a first for me missing most of the key softball action. Crazy!

Too bad Cal could not have landed a transfer like Oregon's Stevie Hansen. Heck, Chelsea Spencer and her partner come from the Oregon program as a coach & player.

It certainly appears that the Bears are having fun tonight (especially the dugout crew). I saw Mia Phillips "go yard"
after fouling off several pitches. I think that she's a player! I wish that Flo Softball would correct Cal's hit total-it's five runs on *five* hits

4 innings of no-hit ball for De Nava.

What a bright spot she's been so far. When McGowan comes in next year that'll be a nice 1-2 punch.
Schroeder71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Did you see Elon Butler? Huskies try to pick her off 1st base on a foul pop-up but an overthrow allows her to make it around to third base. But evidently, she had to retag first (news to me) so she had to retrace her steps back to first base. Another two bases given up by Elon. Every time that she gets on base a fan has to hold his or her breath on what mistake might be about to happen...

A couple of observations regarding De Nava. She walks too many batters, and she doesn't throw enough off speed. Miranda possesses an excellent change-up but she seldom throws it. This is fourth HR allowed in five appearances. She tends to give up the big one like a grand slam previously. Her no-hitter is broken up with a three-run bolt .

Tianna Bell has awakened tonight w/ her initial two extra-base hits: a double & homerun.

I feel bad for jinxing De Nava. Washington's first hit of the game is a 3 run homerun. 5-3 Cal

s71, in real life miranda di nava brilliantly throws more off speed & strikes than any other bears pitcher, she is not a fire thrower but rather an artist in full control (most of the time) of her canvas

elite slugger elon butler & her base running is a function of coaching, there's a systemic problem when the bears lead the nation in the most baserunners thrown out every season

potential acc home run champ tianna bell waking up from her home run hibernation is a very good sign, let's ******* go!!

and all acc shortstop acacia anders & her painfully messed up ribs finally healing up & allowing her to lead the kinda struggling bears infield defense to the next level is gonna take a lotta pressure off the pitching staff!!

freshman mia phillips combines electric speed with quick twitch +1 athleticisim!!

fun fact: alyssa "the ponytail" herrera's timeless deep yard swing is kinda like watching mateen bhaghani rhythmically drill a 57 yard field goal thru the middle third of the uprights or collin morikawa baby cut an 8 iron 165 yards to within 9 inches from the hole, these SPECIAL athletes do this **** with NO EFFORT!!!

should we buy a watch or an aquarium??

Today is a big one. Seattle has a very good ace pitcher who defeated Northwestern earlier this week. I imagine we'll see her.

How many innings can we get out of DeNava this year? She'll likely pitch close to 180 if we really can't find a solid number two behind her. Thor and Jolene. Pitched close to 200IP a year. (Have to look it up)
CalFanatic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jolene pitched 333 innings in that insane 2011 season.

There will never be anyone like her. Pitching on a partially fractured hip. The ultimate warrior.

That 2006 season from Thorson was also played while dealing with a serious, nagging wrist injury.

I remember we had to throw then-freshman Lauren Frankiewicz during the title game against East Carolina in a non-conference tournament because Thor's wrist was in such bad shape. Another warrior. Heck, she and Jo are my two favorite Bears of all time.
Schroeder71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cal screws up again in the middle of a potential big B1st by batting out of order. Tianna Bell was supposed to hit fifth and Alyssa Herrera sixth but they batted in reverse order. The Seattle RedHawks coach caught it and the inning is over with two runners left stranded. The Bears consistently give away outs and runs, yet they expect to win games? "Something is rotten in Denmark"

S71 how are you accesing live stats or streaming without paying for it I'm not paying money just to do a live stat thing. Everybody's got their hand out ugh.
