When you can't throw strikes, can't cleanly field a bunt and need to go to your bullpen in the 1st.... yeah, not a good start! To put it kindly =)

^ reckless 3rd base coaching ran the bears outta the 1st inning & changed the early acc tournament momentum

all that's 1 way to finally get a change of the 3rd base coach

That was a terrible call by the review room. How is it obstructing on the Cal catcher when she has the ball 15 feet prior to GT getting to home plate. The runner did not even attempt a slide and tried to run the catcher over. The runner should have been tossed out.

disagree, the runner has a right to a piece of home plate

also disagree with starting a true freshman who hasn't started since the season opener in tempe at 3rd base in a high pressure acc tournament game

and why would the bears run themselves outta an inning with a 7 run deficit unsuccessfully tryna get another non critical base which takes a run off the scoreboard??

Are they a lock for NCAA tourney?

The fundamental errors in base running have come back to bite the Bears. Two more infield errors helped the Yellow Jackets to keep rallies going in both the 1st & 2nd innings, resulting in a 7-0 deficit. Cal senior pitchers have struckout zero batters in this ACC Tournament game. All of these factors are reasons why this year's softball team is going nowhere. Abysmal pitching, weak infield defense and horrific base running combine to make it very difficult for the team to overcome. The coaching staff has not done a good job of correcting these season-long deficiencies. The players seem more content in laughing, dancing and generally have a good time out there.

kc, the bears headed into today's game with a #24 rpi, they are a lock for the ncca selection sunday

only fitting the game ends with a bear picked off 1st base down by 8 runs in the 5th inning, cannot make this **** up

reboot is gonna be necessary:

1) 3rd base coach needs to be changed permanently with no going back & forth...the bears have had a 100++++ runners thrown out on the bases this season
2) bears last in the acc fielding percentage, not only a ton of errors but also misplaced balls with poor fielding fundamentals/angles/throws...and the bears 2 best defenders anders & lee won't be back next season, this could get a lot worser unless epic changes are made to teaching defense in berkeley
3) pitchers gotta pitch ahead in the count

s71, the team spirit is a huge plus for the program, sports should be FUN & that's a huge recruiting attraction

poor coaching decisions is the PROBLEM

I agree that the players enjoying themselves together is an attractive asset. However, when there's a lack of discipline enforced by the coaching staff, it's difficult to improve. These two pitchers matched up in Berkeley in the ACC opener and the Bears crushed GT, 10-2. Today, Cal gets run-ruled 8-0 in 5 innings. Which team improved the most over the course of the season?

Certainly seems that most of our deficiencie. pitching, fielding, base running...were on full display today and our hitting didn't show up! Recipe for disaster.Lots to work on for next year.

Of the Cal weaknesses, aggressive base running seems the most immediately fixable

There will always be close calls and gambling based on situations, but some of the base running decisions have been mind exploding

I've witnessed us literally turn around 2b as the ball is hitting 3B's glove. Sometimes I truly can't believe the baserunning decisions I'm seeing with my own eyes.

With that said, we have a great recruiting class coming in with a much needed second arm. The future is bright but we need to play more composed. If we find the middle ground between the "timid bunt first" of Ninemire and the "run the bases like we've ingested crack cocaine" (currently), we are going to be great!

I would like to see Cal bring in a veteran pitcher from the transfer portal. Reimers & Teperson finished the season as 2 of the top 3 pitchers but will graduate. The two young pitchers need a veteran presence along with Ryann Orange for next season.

That would be great but is probably a tall order. As to the importance of pitching, how's this for a quick glance: ESPN top ranked Texas A&M ,306 team BA; 67 HRs; 2.64 team ERA. Cal comparables: 310, 60, 4.14. Clearly there are myriad elements that factor into success but these 3 categories are drivers.

Roelling's really struggled this year with her control... nearly a 1:1 walk to strikeout ratio.
