yeah drove down the 101 from north scottsdale to tempe today at the speed of light to check out the softball team's 1st day out for the 2025 season
beautiful weather in the low 70s as asu's facility which is framed by palm trees shimmering in the outfield, during the 1st game warm ups the bears stood in front of the dugout standing on 10 paws yelling FUN cheers led by this year team's emotional leader kaylee pond who is 100 hundo the person you would want riding shotgun next to you on a cross country drive to every buc-ee's in this beautiful country!!
starting line ups: all american shortstop acacia anders is out with messed up ribs which resulted in potential all acc home run slugger elon butler moving from 2nd base to ss and impressive true freshman mia phillips (who runs the bases with the electric speed of desean jackson returning punts at memorial stadium) starting at 2nd base
pitching: this team's 2025 campaign is gonna be determined by the pitching, this team is gonna score a lotta runs & the defense is solid with closing speed in the outfield...anna reimers looks incredibly fit kinda like an olympics skiing cross country gold medalist from a nordic country & after that it's gonna be a wide open competition...annabel tepperson is the early leader for the #2 role pitching from ahead of the count most of the time, freshman miranda de nava notched 7 strikeouts in closing out the 1st game after a jittery welcome to d1 softball, ashanti mcdade brings heat (gotta work on throwing more strikes) & ryann orange got a high upside
home runs: this team will lead the acc & potentially even the nation in home runs, it's an exciting fireworks offense to watch led by hitting coach brandon telesco...lagi quiroga got elite bat speed & led off the 1st game with a high ball to left field that kept soaring over the fence, impressive true freshman mia phillips followed her with a drilled homer to left field & who wuz so pumped up she rounded the bases in around 10 seconds, my favorite player alyssa "the ponytail" herrera (her moms is a school teacher) did her patented happy dance after her dinger, team leader mika lee continues her remarkable ascent as an improving player every season & kaylee pond's pumped up kicks home run trot!!
3rd base coaching: coach chelsea spencer is a remarkable head coach that has built a family 1st culture of young ladies that are academically ambitious & that care about each other but at the same time chelsea is still running the bears outta innings with her reckless & unsuccessful decisions to advance runners including asking her catcher to steal & being thrown out by 5 feet...honestly she should consider coaching 1st base, her poor decisions (the bears needed runners not an extra base) coupled with some not clean fielding/ball handling (lack of awareness of a runner heading to home plate) & an miscalculated cut off relay throw to home plate wuz key factors in the 2nd game loss to maryland
randi roelling: the arrogant georgia transfer & her overly involved little league dad's departure is a loss in the talent department but a plus for this year's team chemistry...this is kinda like mendoza & his sorry azz dad, good luck with nando & roelling's kinda worthless degrees when competing with berkeley & stanford grads in the highly competitive global economy that favors the well educated when they are 30 years old
saturday's doubleheader: early morning game with utah to be followed by a rematch with maryland, shocky is gonna catch the utes game before departing to handle his coaching duties with michael kim at the phoenix open in the former bears quest to win his 2nd pga tournament title
CONGRATS to them bears (35-19) on making the tournament again, they will be heading to norman next weekend for the 4 team regional hosted by oklahoma (44-7) & play omaha (39-11) on friday
on the one hand they bears hit a lotta home runs (60) this season & got the best bench team spirit in college softball, huge kudos to coach spencer & kaylee pond for making that happen!!...next season tianna bell (15 home runs), lagi quiroga (11 home runs) & elon butler (10 home runs) will be joined by alyssa herrera (hopefully 100% healthy), blueshirting kendall todd & incoming long beach poly 3rd base polynesian slugger emoni lam "e-money" sam as the most dangerous power team in the acc (hitting coach brandon telesco is an elite developer of talent)!!
on the other hand, they got the worst 3rd base coach in softball at any level, the bears probably had 150+ baserunners thrown out this season, it's so bad it's almost comical kinda like watching the bad news bears...they also finished last the in the acc in fielding percentage, they wuz an error prone porous defense (54 errors plus an equal # of misplaced balls) that will lose it's best 2 defenders (acacia anders & mika lee) next season, presumably +1 athletic mia phillips will move from 2b to ss next season...and a pitching rotation that sometimes struggled to pitch from ahead in the count, miranda de nava will head into next season as the ace
while it's disappointing that's there still no dedicated basketball practice facility in berkeley, shocky is glad the softball team is getting a new facility so they can host future ncca tournaments
Kiss of Death! The last time Cal was chosen for the Norman, OK Regional, the Bears defeated Missouri (SEC) to face #1 in the nation, Oklahoma. The Sooners took care of business. I hope that Cal's pitching is enough to get past Omaha & Boston U to rematch against the national powerhouse in the final of the double-elimination regional. GO BEARS!

I saw this and it stood out to me: "...good luck with nando & roelling's kinda worthless degrees when competing with berkeley & stanford grads in the highly competitive global economy that favors the well educated when they are 30 years old"
You don't actually think these kids goto D1 softball program to get a science degrees do you? These kids are all about the D1 programs and conference. Most graduates struggle after their softball career.
actually most of the bearents shocky has talk too value the berkeley education & the ability to create potential future generational wealth for their daughters...would suggest u read the player bios & then respond if u still think the bears aren't pursuing difficult majors such as science, this isn't dumb azz football
there's no getting PAID in softball after college, the degree is gonna determine their futures when they're 30 years old
as a berkeley grad coach spencer is doing a great job with player retention which includes the constant reminders of the power of a cal, stanford or ivy league degree in a highly competitive global economy that unremorsefully disregards disposable gladiators with kinda worthless degrees
I was talking about most Division 1 players in general, not just at Cal. I do agree that if they were pursuing majors like Chemistry, Engineering, or Biology (STEM fields), it could make a difference. However, from what I've observed, none of the athletes are majoring in those subjects; they're more focused on psychology, nursing, or accounting. The prestige of the institution isn't as crucial for those degrees.
It seemed like you implied that a degree from Cal would offer significant advantages for our athletes, but I didn't notice any STEM majors among them.
Maddie Groff, a soph southpaw, will face Cal, again this season in the Oklahoma Regional. She helped defeat the Bears twice last year pitching for So Illinois to eliminate us. Both losses were by one-run. Cal hitters that had some success against were Tatum Anzaldo, Hope Alley & Acacia Anders. Her sister Rylie, moved with her to Omaha, their hometown, as her batterymate.
I would expect a tight game. Omaha is a different team, but Cal must get by Maddie Groff to advance to the final against Oklahoma. The young lady possesses a 10:1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Bear's pitching is weaker this season so I would expect Omaha to be able to score some runs. GO BEARS!
One final thought: if Maddie Groff transferred to Cal for the next two seasons, the Bears would be in the top 25 the entire time. Only problem is that Oklahoma will see her play, too.
Maddie Groff has a perfect game the initial time through the batting order. Most of the balls have been hit to second base.
Elon Butler doubles and Tianna Bell singles infield, scoring the game's 1st run. Cal chasing too many pitches out of the strike zone to account for four K's.
Marshall makes two bad throws in a row to begin the T5th. Bell makes a great save but could not stop the second. Then Anders boots a third ground ball in succession. Great escape by Annabel Teperson with a strike out on a change up and a groundout that was fielded by 1B Bell.
Lagi Quiroga has really had a bad game at the plate. She had a 3-0 count with runners on 2nd & 3rd in the T6th with two outs and grounded out to shortstop. She struck out twice earlier.
Great pitching performance executed by senior Teperson. She tosses a two-hitter for the 1-0 complete game shutout. Cal's vaunted hitting was a no-show vs Maddie Groff. GO BEARS!
Hurray for the Bears! Terrific pitching by Annabel. Will it be De Nava or for next game? DeNava has struggled with the HR ball. Orange lack control but has only given up 5 hr balls. Think they have to save Annabel for game 3.
all acc standout tianna "ring my" bell with the clutch rbi sending the winning runner to home plate, mika lee with the grand theft larceny (15 years sentence at san quentin when one considers the impact statement) in center field & stinson beach high school grad annabel tepperson goes pipeline in ugly azz oklahoma
great to see alyssa herrera (and her trademark HAPPY DANCE) healthy again & back in the starting line up!!
Hurray for the Bears! Terrific pitching by Annabel. Will it be De Nava or for next game? DeNava has struggled with the HR ball. Orange lack control but has only given up 5 hr balls. Think they have to save Annabel for game 3.
It's difficult because De Nava would statistically be your best option but given the long ball troubles…that's a rough matchup against Oklahoma.
I agree. The Oklahoma game will be a loss and I'm guessing that Omaha defeats Boston U in the loser's bracket. It will be a rematch between Cal and Omaha so allow Teperson another shot at them. If the Bears triumph, they'll face the Sooners for the championship. Cal would have to defeat Oklahoma twice to advance.
Cal needs to quit bunting every time that the leadoff hitter gets on base. Elon Butler leads off w/ a double off of their top pitcher, Sam Landry. Mika Lee tries to sacrifice but can't. She grounds out. Both Acacia Anders and Tianna Bell strike out. The Sooners are going to score a bunch of runs so why are the Bears playing small ball for one run? Chelsea Spencer drops Lagi Quiroga to the #9 spot in the batting order after yesterday.
Leadoff hitter for Oklahoma homers to the off field off of Teperson. Sooners have Agbayani, Esmerling & Corrie Hicks (Mitty), etc. These names should sound familiar.
Kaylee Pond homers to leadoff the 2nd on a inside drop ball off of the foul pole in RF. Quiroga comes to bat with a runner on and check swings a weak ground out. What's wrong with her? C'mon.
Cal had a chance in the 3rd with bases loaded and one out, trailing 5-2. Herrera grounds into a double play to kill the rally. I don't know that Spencer should be playing her here. Tianna Bell also struckout for a second time in the midst of the four hits and a walk. In the T4th, Bears loaded the bases again with two singles and a walk but did not score. Through four IP, Landry has yielded 10 base runners to Cal.
Anna Reimers has been terrible in relief with four walks, 2 HBPs & now a grand slam (11-2). Pitiful pitching. Mia Phillips dropped a throw at second base for a force out that would have ended the inning (before the HR).The official scorer did not call it an error but instead gave the Sooners an infield hit.
Three outs left and the Bears have still not used Miranda De Nava.
Cal will face winner of Omaha-BostonU tonight in an elimination game.
What time does the elimination game start? It's not listed on the website. Did Omaha beat Boston University?
Evidently, there was a weather delay of 1:45 in Norman, OK. The Omaha-BU game is only in the T4th in a scoreless tie @ 4:20 pm PST. If one adds an hour forty-five minutes to the 4 pm original schedule that would make an amended time of 5:45-6pm for the nitecap. Somebody needs to score for this game to conclude. As a Cal fan, I'd rather play Boston U and face a new pitcher. GO BEARS!
My Live Stats has been stuck in the T5th with two outs. Cal leads 2-0. I have been watching the Giants game and following the Live Stats to track the Bears. What is the status of the game?
