It looks like Anna Reimers and Tianna Bell have entered the transfer portal.

The portal is a disaster for college sports. 3 of Arizona's pitchers are in the portal after making it to a regional final.

Bummed about Bell. I wasn't expecting that. This is the new reality.

Personally I expected it from most players who have had outstanding seasons. They are wanting to maximize their $$$s while they can. They aren't going to make this kind of money after they graduate at least not from the pro-softball leagues. But like you I despise the NIL. There has to be some rules that limit the money and how many times you can transfer. It is ruining college sports.

Desperately hoping for some legislation around NIL. Frankly- why do we even have college sports right now?

Create semi-pro leagues.

Tianna Bell was the top power hitter and best infield defensive player on the team last season. I'm surprised that she wants to depart.

Not sure you can blame NIL for Bell leaving, though it may provide her with some new opportunities.

Among our new recruits this year are two power-hitting 1Bs, 5'8" Nina Payton-Johnson and 5'10" Mya McGowan (Pitcher), both of whom are significantly taller than the 5'5" Tianna Bell. Length makes a difference at 1B.

Bell was one of my favorite players this year, so I am sorry to see her leave, but I would rather see her playing somewhere else than not having a place on the field here.

Both Anna and Kaylee are seniors, right? So, perhaps they are pursuing graduate degrees (not offered here) at other schools.

Both were celebrated at Senior Day, so their departure should not be a surprise to anyone.

If you compare the list of departures with the new recruits you might understand that the coaches have been planning to replace the departing seniors for some time. Over the past few seasons, the new recruits have been as good or better players than those they have replaced.

calalum, the self reporting zoom call violation & penalties for the football program along with the attempt to significantly reduce the football training table dollars in the last 30 days are yet more attempts by the evil as ***# jennifer simon-o'neil to derail the revenue programs in favor of her empire of olympic sports

beyond her role in enabling mckeever to create a hostile racist environment for women's swimmers, jenny has also told general knowlton that the nil dollars should be equally shared with all sports & also that the men's & women's basketball recruiting budgets need to be equal in order to be in compliance with title ix (an interpretation not shared by any other university in the united states of america

right now multiple women's teams are failing to successfully compete:

women's basketball: failed to measurably increase attendance despite this past season's generational squad, has a head coach who is an introvert that cannot raise nil funds & the hiring of an unqualified marketing director in markeisha everrett

women's softball: multiple portal entrants today including the team's leading homerun hitter tianna bell, simon-o'neil has no ability to fundraise nil dollars with her unlikeable arrogant personality

women's gymnastics: head coaches leaving to clemson & roster retention under attack, once again no relationships in place to raise funds for the program

women's volleyball: 15-17 record last season & 7-13 in acc play

women's field hockey: 7-10 record last season & 1-6 in acc play

women's lacrosse: 6-10 record last season & 0-9 in acc play

women's track & field: tied for 12th place in the acc indoor championship last season

women's cross country: 15th place in the acc tournament last season

in an accountable organization, jennifer simon-o'neil would've been fired long ago

yet the chancellor somehow thinks berkeley alums are gonna endow all 31 sports despite the vast majority of them failing by every possible metric

cal is the only school in the nation with a larger men's golf endowment than the football program and that has absolutely nothing to do with the ****tards knowlton & simon-o'neil

dumbest post evah, losing one of the acc's leading homerun hitters but arguing that a taller 1st baseman is a plus

u also posted that earlier this season that the reckless base running wuz part of a strategy to win softball games

jenny, nobody is buying ur dumb azz propoganda & that's why ur resume is so toxic with no other school in nation interested in u which is why berkeley is stuck with u as long as general knowlton is in ur corner

I'm excited about the new recruits, but I find it a bit odd to think that one of the top home run hitters in the ACC-an All-ACC player-could be easily replaced by a freshman. She would've played.

You are most likely correct, but who would have thought that the ACC pre-season All-Conference 2B would end up playing RF because she was the second best option at 2B behind a Freshman?

There are now 0 Arizona pitchers left on the roster. Maddox is in the portal.

Just a complete disaster. The portal, NIL, what even is the point of college sports right now?

There is NIL money available at many other schools as the House settlement has not yet been approved. If it is approved the portal probably slows down some in the next few years. Collectives around the country have money sitting around that needs to get spent now. So I would expect the portal for softball to be very active.

SEC programs will spend to compete in this sport. After July 1st if the House settlement gets approval the cap goes into effect. Sure there will be some programs that find workarounds but it is expected to slow down the NIL train.

But players like to win and get PT so there will always be some players that test the portal.

Kaylee Pond was credited for leading the spirit of the dugout for Cal and was my favorite player. She could replace Acacia Anders in the third spot in the batting order. To lose Bell & Pond would to be devastating to add to Anders + Lee. The only returning Bears would be Quiroga, Butler & Phillips that can hit. If the most influential players depart, I have a feeling more are to follow (the leaders). The coaching staff has not corrected the problems that the team suffered through last season so maybe they're bailing out on the USS Spencer. Marshall & Medina are replaceable by incoming recruits. This is the initial time when mass transfers from starters has occurred under Chelsea. Frosh LHP Randi Roelling transferred to the Georgia Bulldogs after last season.

To be very clear, there isn't a Coach Spencer problem. Most regional finalist teams are seeing this same thing happen. This is a structural problem in College Sports.

I also wonder if having to play an entire season on the road next year caused some players to think twice. Long term the new stadium is a huge recruiting win but…

Thank god we have a strong recruiting class coming in next year. Frankly, all 4 position players can probably start.

This was my first thought too. So, there's no alternative stadium proposed? Like rumors about Edwards Stadium re-configured for softball.

Players can also withdraw from the portal just like WBB.

I I suspect that coach Spencer has nil money. I think she has a cap on how much she can spend on each player. I have no idea about nil valuations only knowing that Najaree a generational talent got a million. A player of Bells caliber was probably offered $100,000 by Spencer which was probably her cap. Obviously the SEC will give her as much as they want so Cal loses out as usual.

Medina and Marshall obviously looking for more playing time I got a feeling Spencer didn't mind seeing them go and I'm sure she had a talk with all the players above mentioned.

The same goes for Reimers and pond they were grad students anyway and I got a feeling they wanted a nursing degree or something Cal doesn't offer of course Cal doesn't offer a nursing degree the one thing 99% of all softball players would like to be after softball.

Unlike Schroeder 71 the sky is not falling who knows who will get to replace some of the players who left Schroeder 71 boohoo.

An excellent question. Let the money sports be taken over by the NFL, MLB, NBA and WNBA and be done with it I would be in favor of "going Ivy" (how are they affected by House?) or running any IC sports as club programs.. Give school teams back to the students.

They lost Adia Barnes, who coached them to the national woman's hoop final. That's why I don't complain like S71 some schools out there have far less luck then Cal.

Another one of my beloved teams hits the dust

At least I don't have to go to any softball games at the temporary field next year

Well I thought the softball team was immune from this idiotic roster churn that the football team and this basketball teams went through whereupon you lose 39 players and get back 37 but basically you hemorrhage talent and are always slightly worse off than the last year. Same things going to happen with softball I won't be surprised if the DeNava is in the portal to the next few days why don't the whole team transfer LOL. And obviously Spencer will bring in eight or nine players or 17-18 but not quite as good as the ones that left.

And surely the reason all these players are leaving isn't because of they have to play one year in a temporary stadium.
CalFanatic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's all just so insane to me. This happened to Washington last year too. Washington! A storied, championship-winning program. They had only nine players on the roster at one point.

Doesn't a Cal degree mean anything anymore? Maybe I'm jaded from working at some of the top tech companies here in the Bay Area, but those things still matter when you're hiring recent college grads. One could absolutely argue they shouldn't, fwiw.
Schroeder71

Many of my favorite teams [women's basketball, women's softball, women's gymnastics] appear to be disintegrating before my eyes. Will any top programs still exist at Cal? I loved college athletics but not in the current form where the rich only get richer. Nobody at Cal seems to have any control over what is happening.

I guess that I'll have to wait to see what's left after everyone picks up the pieces. The REAL problem is that this will happen every year so no school loyalty or team chemistry will have time to develop. Sad situation indeed.

WSJ has an article about this, focused on upcoming changes. Behind paywall but
here's a bit:

" She's Softball's First $1 Million Pitcherand She Could Be the Last

NiJaree Canady's transfer from Stanford landed her a seven-figure payday and has Texas Tech in an NCAA softball super regional. But lucrative deals like hers could soon be doomed… But athletes like Canady are suddenly an endangered species. That's because a new set of rules that would severely restrict how much boosters can pay college athletes is likely to be enacted in the coming days. The ripple effect could mean fewer softball players, golfers, sprinters and other athletes from lower-profile sports earning big paydays."

What rules? Enacted by whom? The current chaotic state of affairs has come to pass largely through litigation which totally disempowered the NCAA from governing. I wouldn't count on any "new rules" coming into effect unless it's by way of congressional action.

Here's more from the story. Sorry I can't provide a gift link...I don't have sub, just get it through Apple News and don't like to copy/paste full stories. Here's some more though:

Quote:

If and when Judge Claudia Wilken approves a settlement to a consolidation of three antitrust lawsuits brought by athletes against the major conferences and the NCAA, two big shifts are set to take place. First, each college athletic department will be allowed to share about $20 million of its annual revenues with athletes. But roughly 90% of that money is expected to go to the marquee sports of football and men's basketballleaving scraps for sports like softball.

Second, outside deals for athletes to profit from their name, image or likeness (NIL) would begin to go through a new clearinghouse built with help from Deloitte and overseen by a new entity set up to enforce the rules enacted by the settlement.

In that clearinghouse, deals by major companies like Nike or State Farm are likely to pass muster, said someone familiar with a committee set up by the Power 5 conferences and NCAA to implement the settlement. Deals like Canady's, funded primarily by booster collectives, are not.
"Booster deals are going to be more difficult to pass," the person familiar said, adding: "The system is set up to not allow third parties to pay for play."
