So my trip to World Championships in Russia didn't go exactly as planned...I spent the entire competition sick, cheering my teammates on from my hotel room. You can't always choose the cards you are dealt, but I'm feeling much better and I'm excited for the upcoming season! Finally happy to be headed back to the USA! And yes this is me getting my blood drawn in a hospital in Russia, and no it wasn't as bad as this picture makes it look...just being dramatic!

Egypt started the night off strongly, earning two wins straight away in the first two events. First, Farida Osman rushed to the wall in the women's 100m butterfly to claim gold in a winning time of 58.83. She represented the only swimmer to dip beneath the minute threshold in the race and her time tonight wasn't too far off the Egyptian national record. Osman herself holds the 100m butterfly national mark with the 58.22 she registered at this year's World Championships in Kazan.

She has one more event to go - the 50m free on Thursday. For more on the games, see http://www.cojabrazzaville2015.com/en/

Mapping Out The 2015-2016 U.S. National Team By Training Base

The circles on the map grow larger based on the number of athletes training at that location. You can see the major hubs, at SwimMAC Carolina (12 national teamers), the University of Georgia (8 national teamers), the University of California (8 national teamers) and the University of Texas (7 national teamers).

1. Nathan Adrian
2. Natalie Coughlin
3. Anthony Ervin
4. Caitlin Leverenz
5. Ryan Murphy
6. Jacob Pebley
7. Josh Prenot
8. Tom Shields

My quibble: Cal's contribution is massively under-represented here as baby :bear:s Katie, Kathleen, Amy & Andrew, blueshirt Cierra, gone-pro Missy, alumna Madison, alumnus Will Copeland, are all listed under their HS & club teams instead of UC Berkeley.

Add to that some potential future Bears from prospective recruits like Katie Drabot, Meghan Small, Becca Mann, Courtney Harnish, Sierra Schmidt, Cassidy Bayer, Claire Adams (for tedbear's sake even if CA's not looking likely lol)...well that'd make quite an impressive list, methinks

Eight women and eight men with Cal ties are announced as part of Team USA for 2015-16.

By Cal Athletics on Wed, September 02, 2015

BERKELEY - Team USA should have a decidedly blue and gold tone to it as the 2016 Rio Olympics draw nearer with Tuesday's announcement that 16 swimmers with Cal ties will be included on the U.S. 2015-16 National Team roster.

On the men's side, 2015 NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year Ryan Murphy leads a four-man contingent of current Bears on the team, making the squad in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke. Senior Josh Prenot, a three-time Pac-12 champion in the 400 individual medley, is listed for the 200 breaststroke as well as the 200 and 400 individual medley, while fellow senior Jacob Pebley made the team in the 200 backstroke. One of the newest Bears, freshman Andrew Seliskar, landed a spot in both the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley.

Joining the current Bears on Team USA's roster is a quartet of alums that certainly doesn't lack for international recognition. Gold medalists Nathan Adrian and Anthony Ervin are back, with Adrian in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle and Ervin in the 50 freestyle. Fellow Bear alums Tom Shields (100 and 200 butterfly) and Will Copeland (100 freestyle) also made the list, which is achieved by a swimmer ranking in the top six in the United States in events from Jan. 1 to Aug. 10.

For the women, three of Team USA's most familiar stars will bring their Berkeley ties back for another run at Olympic hardware. 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin is on the roster once again in the 50 and 100 freestyle as well as the 100 backstroke as she points toward a trip to Rio.

By her side will be three other alumnae, including four-time gold medalist Missy Franklin, the reigning NCAA Swimmer of the Year, Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and Honda Cup winner as the nation's top female student-athlete. She's listed in the 100 and 200 freestyle as well as the 100 and 200 backstroke and is one of only three swimmers to earn a spot in four events.

Another former Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year will also join the team as Caitlin Leverenz secured a roster spot in both the 200 and 400 individual medley. Leverenz won bronze in the 200 IM at the London Olympics. In addition, Madison Kennedy gained a place on the list in the 50 free. Cierra Runge, a freshman for the Bears last season who is taking this year off from school to train for the Olympics, made the team in the 400 freestyle.

The Bears have much to be excited about when it comes to the future as well, with three incoming freshmen also on Team USA's roster Kathleen Baker (100 backstroke, 200 IM), Amy Bilquist (50 freestyle), and Katie McLaughlin (200 freestyle, 100/200 butterfly).

Most relevant stat is how many Cal products are on the National Team, not where they train. Bears no longer even acknowledge Jessica Hardy since there's no need to pad the resume. Unless you've been on the pool deck at Spieker most people aren't even aware of the huge plaques celebrating Cal aqua Olympians.

Looks like Dave Marsh named the women head coach and Bob Bowman the guys head coach. Was a posting in the comment sections that Dave Durden's performance in the summer World games most likely played a roll in him not being selected. http://swimswam.com/david-marsh-bob-bowman-named-head-coaches-of-2016-us-olympic-team/

Cheers OBear for the update, and for all your invaluable input & info on our teams in a plethora of Olympic Sports!

Reckon Durden got a bit of an unfair rap re Team USA's performance @ 2015 Worlds, as there were several factors in play that were outside of his control - for example, Worlds team selected a year ago (2014 Nationals & Pan Pacs) so a number of the fastest swimmers this summer weren't on the team, absence of Phelps, rest of the world catching up and often overtaking US of A etc. The Women's squad in Kazan had their share of erratic results too - but didn't hear anyone blaming Salo for that.

Perhaps there's more than a smidgen of resentment/envy from fans of rival NCAA programmes with regards to the continuous parade of success earned by, and the high profile attention given to, Dave & Teri, since they seem to receive more than the usual ratio of negative criticism in the SwimSwam comments section?

Recall when Katie McL had first excitedly committed to Bears that the associated SwimSwam article received some very scathing & plain rude remarks insinuating that she had made a poor choice...and of course whenever it comes to Missy...

Anyway, here are some video interviews with the 2 selected Head Coaches for Rio:

Teri and Durden will have enough swimmers that they'll both be assistants. Marsh is Durden's mentor, but Natalie would be his only female swimmer. Missy will be Schmitz's only swimmer, so Teri would coach her (and Cierra).

Canadian Olympic Trials are this week and Noemie Thomas has qualified for the Olympics by finishing 2nd in the 100m fly at 57.02. A new personal best; congratulations!

Jeremy Bagshaw finished 2nd in the 200m free, but his time is not within the FINA A standard. He will have to see if he is selected at the conclusion of the meet, or try to qualify in the 400m free later on. Jeremie DeZwirek is also in contention for the 200m back.

Several post-grad swimmers from Team USA are also at this meet for training purposes: Stubblefield, Shields, Prenot, Pebley, Murphy, Mahoney, Katis

Not at the moment; Taylor Ruck would have needed a FINA A time of 4:09.08 to qualify, and she's just off that. (So, I wonder what would happen if a US 2nd place finisher did not have an A time?)

The hope for Jeremy Bagshaw is that Canada is the 16th ranked 4x200m free relay in the world, at the moment, and if they qualify to contest this at the Olympics, they're going to need all the swimmers they can get for this relay. The top four might swim a relay at these trials to try to get a better-ranked time. If the leadoff swimmer gets an A time, I wonder if he might be able to swim it individually.

Their times were third and fourth-fastest in the world. Thomas exhibited potential in 2012, at age 16, by making the finals at the FINA short-course worlds. A nagging foot injury that has inhibited her kick has held her back for much of the cycle leading up to the Trials. "It's been a long time coming," said Thomas, who's from Richmond, B.C., near Vancouver. "This morning was my best time (57.60 seconds) in three years."

The surprise here was Katerine Savard (former Canadian record holder in this event)'s failure to qualify...

I think Noemie's previous PB was 57.96 from 2013, so she dropped almost a second to become the 2nd fastest Canuck 100m flyer ever which is a pretty big deal! Guess training under Teri and alongside her :bear: teammates is working out pretty swell for Noemie in both the big & little pool, seeing that the soph was also an A finalist in both the 100 & 200 fly @ this years' NCAAs

Betcha tedbear is massively ecstatic over Penny's results haha...now let's keep our fingers crossed that she won't follow in Drabot's footsteps and commit to the Furd after we've talked her up so much over here :p

Penny is Cal Bear material all the way!!! She is way too attractive to swim for the Furd. :gobears:

I'm dreaming of a Butterfly crew of Noemie, Katie, Penny, and Eva in two years!

Only way that could happen is if Noemie blueshirts.

Huge props to Noemie. Easily could have blueshirt this year since Canadian Trials were so close to NCAAs. Would have been easy to pack it in after her froskie roomie Cierra bailed. Sadly for Cal and Cierra, she's hardly a slam dunk Olympian.

Oh yeah, you're right BD. I wishfully advanced Penny and Eva as 2017 recruits.

Really thought Thomas was going to take it..but think Penny's length helped her, though she was coming on strong at the end.

Wow, Penny beats out Noemie by just 3 one hundredths of a second. I hope they become Olympic buddies and Noemie influences her to be a Bear :p.

Noemie's Cal success also increases the chances that Penny swims in college and doesn't blueshirt. That being said if Penny turns her back on Oski, hope she goes pro or redshirts in 2020 wherever she goes.

Would guess Cal, Georgia, Michigan, and IU will be in it. Cal's produced better flyers and sprinters. Just wish she were from BC rather than Toronto.

Penny still tearing it up, finishing in second for the 200 Free. Taylor Ruck finished a disappointing fifth in her marquee event. That means she still hasn't made the Canadian Olympic team yet.

Why wouldn't Canada take Ruck as a relay swimmer strictly for future development? With apologies to Penny, Ruck is their highest potential young swimmer even if she underperforms at Trials.

Penny is the number one seed after this mornings prelims in 100 Free. Taylor finishes a very disappointing 11th. Rumor has it that she might have a neck injury. Must be really tough for her, but she is only 15 and will have another chance in 2020. Penny on the other hand, OMG!!!
