Davis' Chenoa Devine, who swam the fly leg of Davis' 200 medley relay the event before, dropped almost a second from prelims and won the 200 free in 1:48.85.

Devine later went on to win the 500 free with a time of 4:48.19, the only finisher under 4:54.

Davis' team of Cosgrove (51.67), Mia Motekaitis (50.98), Hardagon (51.81), and Devine (50.95) did the job (in the 400 free relay), winning in 3:25.41 over Rio Americano (3:25.89) and Granite Bay (3:26.48).

On the girls' side, both Granada's Miranda Heckmann and Carondelet's Madelyn Murphy swept their individual events. Murphy's wins came back to back, first in the 50 free where she swam a 22.49. She followed that up with a blazing 52.15 in the 100 fly to set a new NCS meet record.

Carondelet High School swept the girls' freestyle relays. In the 200 free relay, their quartet posted a 1:33.28. Allison Carr (24.45) and Kelsey Whitkay (23.77) got things started, followed by a 23.07 from Malorie Han on the 3rd leg and a quick 21.99 from Madelyn Murphy on the anchor. Murphy led off their 400 free relay in 48.62, followed by Whitkay (52.27), Han (51.06), and Samantha Coloma (51,84) for a combined 3:23.79.

Cheers BearBackerinLA!

Being only the 2nd year of State Champs, it's been a bit inconsistent in terms of not all the top talents being repped here, but we should still see some good races being contested.

Don't see Maddie, Courtney or Chenoa entered in any of the individual events, but their respective schools (Carondelet, Foothill & Davis) are participating in the girls' relays, so with a spot of luck our incoming baby :bear:s will be making an appearance and helping to set some records...

------------

20 May UPDATE: 2016 CIF Champs, Friday prelims - neither Maddie, Courtney nor Chenoa participated in their respective school team relays, none of which made the Top 16...

Aislinn is positioned @ #11 (B finals) in the 100 free, and seeded #4 (A finals) in the 100 back. Mater Dei also qualified for the Championship final in one of their relays, the 200 medley, after a 3-way swim-off.

Just noticed also that Maddie's stock has risen quite a bit after her recent performances...originally placing #55 back in Sept 2015, she has now made it to CollegeSwimming's Top 20 for the incoming Class of 2016!
The Birthday girl is currently ranked #13 nationally according to their metrics, and the #2 recruit in the state! :bravo

https://www.collegeswimming.com/swimmer/241714/

Here are the updated CollegeSwimming rankings, as of 19 May 2016...note that Keaton still enjoys the distinction of holding a Top 20 spot on SwimSwam's power rankings, which is regarded by many in the swimming community as the more accurate system of the two...

Wow, in spite of all the doom-and-gloom expressed in this thread & elsewhere, looks like our 2016 incoming freshman class may actually make SwimSwam's Top 4... {fingers crossed...knock on wood}

Guess Maddie's recent studly trajectory + Abbey's dominance + Keaton/Chenoa/Courtney/Anina's upside won't end up hurting the ratings for Cal, even if we fell back with regards to nabbing Top 20 prospects this recruiting cycle when compared to some other top rival programmes!

P.S. Claire Adams photo & mention in the article specially for tedbear :p

Perhaps blue and gold lens, but think fourth nationally is closer to a floor than a ceiling for Teri's Bears. Condomettes may be in the hunt, but still all about the Bay Area duopoly. Don't see how LSJU institutionally censuring commentary about a rapist helps recruiting.

Who is the fourth team? 1. Furd 2. Cal 3. SC 4.Wisconsin?

WI (with Benedict Runge) or UVa. UVa's the much bigger threat for the long haul. Entire state of WI has a million less people than the Bay Area alone.

Tedbear's admirably let Adams, Drabot, Gunes, and Penny go, but I'm still a Japanese soldier on a remote Pacific island in the '50s clinging to faint hopes Small eventually ends up a Bear (with Harnish). Georgia's sinking fast. Will be OK this year, but living on borrowed time...

Still weird that two out of UVa, A&M, and Wisconsin won't even make the top 17. Auburn needs to do whatever it takes to lure Papa Marsh back.

Who's giving up on Penny? I still think that with the impending O'Bannon case, the NCAA will let pros compete in the NCAA, and thus Penny, with her friendships with Noemie and Dana, will become a Bear. Hahaha! I also predict that Kevin Durant will become a Warrior, and World Peace will be achieved in the 20 years :p

Ranking the 2016 Women's NCAA Recruiting Classes: #1-4

#4: Wisconsin Badgers

#3: USC Trojans

#2: California Golden Bears

Top-tier additions: #2* Abbey Weitzeil (deferral), #13 Keaton Blovad, Maddie Murphy, Courtney Mykkanen, Chenoa Devine
The rest: Anina Lund, Alexa Buckley, Aislinn Light

Abbey Weitzeil was the #2 recruit from the Class of 2015, but she may even be the #2 overall recruit in history. Sprinters are the difference-makers at the NCAA level, and Weitzeil is the best prep sprinter in history. She currently holds the American and U.S. Open record in the 50 free (21.12), and also she dropped a 46.29 over 18 months ago at Winter Juniors to temporarily own the 100 free records, as well. So she's incredibly fast, and there's no doubt the Bears will be jockeying primarily with Stanford (who gets back Simone Manuel) and USC across all five relays next year.

She's not the only sprint addition, either. Teri McKeever also landed Keaton Blovad (22.7/49.0 in the 50/100) and Maddie Murphy (22.5/48.6). Blovad carries more freestyle endurance (1:46.6 200 free), but Murphy adds a 100 butterfly to the mix (52.1) that would have scored at NCAA's. That fly adds important long-term depth to the Cal fly group, as Noemie Thomas will be the loan threat remaining after Farida Osman graduates this year.

Two more serious assets for Cal: Courtney Mykkanen, a 53.9/1:56.0 backstroker and 2:00.9 IMer, and Chenoa Devine, a 4:44.3/16:20.3 distance freestyler. While not at the NCAA individual scoring level right now, both will be key at Pac-12's, particularly Devine; recent graduations and the transfer of Cierra Runge have left the distance cupboards rather bare (no pun indended) for Cal.

Abbey Weitzeil's ex-boyfriend Cole Cosgrove ended up on the farm and his swimming digressed. Generally think former snot Morgan Priestley is sharp and informed, but he butchered that bit of the article (grammatically and factually).

Possible, but not likely McL and/or Baker bail, but wouldn't be a secret at this point. Teri would have added a high end transfer or leaked it this close to the start of recruiting season.

So far have seen ads featuring Natalie, Leverenz, and Hardy, none of whom made the 2016 team. Several Missy ads, but no Vollmer ads.

Blue and gold glasses aside, previously thought Ledecky made a mistake (other than going to that big ass Taco Bell) by not going pro. If she does as well as expected, there will still be plenty of deals out there in 2020.

Will be almost entirely a competitive reason rather than a commercial reason if she doesn't swim four years on the farm.

Appears that Lilina's making her rounds of several Uni swim programmes - first Tenn, now Florida. Wouldn't mind seeing her on campus next weekend, if her academics is a fit and there's mutual interest, seeing that Cal is fast becoming Butterfly U in addition to being the Backstroke Institution! Farida will have graduated next year (hopefully will stay to train w/Dana, Caitlin, Camille & possibly Missy to Tokyo), but Szilgyi would have Katie, Noemie, Jasmine & Maddie to push her in practices. However, international elites are $$, so chances aren't all that great to be perfectly realistic.

Lilina: Crazy times with these crazy cuties #thatsagator #yaass

Wow ..Bears #2!! Pleasantly surprised. Thought we had struck out with not getting any of our dream team #2 but looks like overall our recruits are super talented and are well respected. Go Bears!!

Bears were never going to overtake the 'furdettes in the 2016 class, but there's more than a little upside (Maddie, Chenoa) in the class than previously thought.

Abbey's a 50/100 hammer to replace Farida, but also has range out to the 200. Surprising breast and IM times. Knowing Teri, Abbey may swim some off events just for kicks/training in unimportant duals, but she's an across the board sprint ace.

Maddie appears to be underrated-solid flyer, but fast enough to swim a 200 Free relay leg. Not a pressing need, but Keaton eventually might be able to swim an 800 Free leg. No slam dunk sprinter in the 2017 class, but Bears may not need another sprinter, although Teri would gladly take AV and/or Marta if they wanted to become Bears.
