Always a bit of a challenge making an educated guess as to which elite internationals would be interested, available and a good fit (most are looking to turn pro, or more comfortable staying in-country), but cheers on the Spela mention, BD!

Defending CIF 100 Fly Champ Maddie Murphy Goes Golden, Verbals to Cal
The Cal Golden Bears have picked up a top-notch in-state commitment in Crow Canyon Country Club’s Maddie Murphy. Murphy, who swims with Carondelet High School in the San Francisco area, won the 100 fly at the first-ever CIF State Championships.
Murphy’s Top Times
• 50 free – 23.13/26.51
• 100 free – 50.02/56.73
• 200 free – 1:48.84/2:04.36
• 100 fly – 53.01/1:00.71
• 200 fly – 2:02.37/2:19.00
Murphy is very proficient in the shorter freestyle events, which will make her a viable relay option for any of Cal’s free relays. What they’ll really be looking for her to contribute in, though, is the 100 fly. She’s under the Olympic Trials cut in the meters 100 fly, and her yards time would’ve put her 6th on their top times list from last season, as would her 200 fly time.
Cal has had a few monster recruiting classes of late, and their roster’s only glaring hole is in the breaststroke. They had three butterfliers under 52 seconds in the 100 last year, led by the 50.94 put down by NCAA A finalist Farida Osman. Murphy is set to join a program with one of the thickest talent pools in the world, and her 100 fly time is almost a second and a half under the 2015-16 NCAA ‘B’ standard. Cal put up half of the A finalists in the 100 fly at Pac-12s last season, and Murphy’s best time would’ve just gotten her into the A final, too. She would’ve also made C finals in the 50, 100, and 200 free as well as the 200 fly.
Murphy has what it takes to score at the conference level as a freshman, and her 100 fly makes her an even more valuable asset to the Bears in the future.
"I chose CAL because the second I walked on campus it felt like home. Teri and the rest of the coaching staff are incredible and I cannot wait to be a part of the CAL family. The girls on the team were so welcoming and the team atmosphere was amazing. It’s a perfect balance between athletics and academics and I’m so honored to say I’m a golden bear!!"
Murphy is Cal’s first big-time butterfly commit to their class of 2020. She joins Alexa Buckley, Aislinn Light, Chenoa Devine, and Keaton Blovad.

Olympic Trials Distance Swimmer Anina Lund Commits to Cal
The Danish-American National Fills A Big Gap for the Bears
Anina Lund, who currently trains at Badger Swim Club, has committed to the University of California, Berkeley. Lund a distance swimmer who in addition to pool swimming was selected as one of twelve female athletes for the US Open Water Select Camp in 2014. Lund has swum her strongest times in LCM, particularly in the summer of 2014 where she finished 9th at Summer Juniors in the 800 free and 1500 free alongside a 17th place 400 free:
• 500 freestyle: 4;49.40
• 1650 freestyle: 16:27.90
• 200 freestyle: 1:50.58
Lund rarely races anything other than freestyle events, in fact for the 2014-2015 season she has just one non-freestyle recorded time. Owing to her dual-nationality (Lund is also a citizen of Denmark), Lund has also competed internationally. In 2013 she was part of Sigma Swim’s Danish Team National Championship. She returned to Denmark in 2015 where she won a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle at the Danish Open. She has also competed at the 2015 Geneva International Championship, taking silver in the 400 free after Lindsey Vrooman. Lund also competed in the 2014 USA Swimming Open Water Championship 10k, finishing 20th.
While Lund’s 500 freestyle time would have placed her 5th on last year’s depth chart, her 1650 will give an immediate boost to the Bears, who despite the great performances by Cierra Runge were relatively weak in distance. Lund will need to improve moderately in order to make Cal’s NCAA roster, as the last invited time in 2015 for the 1650 was 16:17. Even qualifying may not guarantee her a place on Cal’s roster, given the NCAA potential on the Bears. Her 500 and 1650 would have put her in top 16 and top 8 respectively at last year’s PAC-12 Championship meet.
