Always a bit of a challenge making an educated guess as to which elite internationals would be interested, available and a good fit (most are looking to turn pro, or more comfortable staying in-country), but cheers on the Spela mention, BD!

In other news, SwimSwam has just published their report on Maddie's verbal to Bears (UPDATE: also on Anina's):

Defending CIF 100 Fly Champ Maddie Murphy Goes Golden, Verbals to Cal

The Cal Golden Bears have picked up a top-notch in-state commitment in Crow Canyon Country Club’s Maddie Murphy. Murphy, who swims with Carondelet High School in the San Francisco area, won the 100 fly at the first-ever CIF State Championships.

Murphy’s Top Times
• 50 free – 23.13/26.51
• 100 free – 50.02/56.73
• 200 free – 1:48.84/2:04.36
• 100 fly – 53.01/1:00.71
• 200 fly – 2:02.37/2:19.00

Murphy is very proficient in the shorter freestyle events, which will make her a viable relay option for any of Cal’s free relays. What they’ll really be looking for her to contribute in, though, is the 100 fly. She’s under the Olympic Trials cut in the meters 100 fly, and her yards time would’ve put her 6th on their top times list from last season, as would her 200 fly time.

Cal has had a few monster recruiting classes of late, and their roster’s only glaring hole is in the breaststroke. They had three butterfliers under 52 seconds in the 100 last year, led by the 50.94 put down by NCAA A finalist Farida Osman. Murphy is set to join a program with one of the thickest talent pools in the world, and her 100 fly time is almost a second and a half under the 2015-16 NCAA ‘B’ standard. Cal put up half of the A finalists in the 100 fly at Pac-12s last season, and Murphy’s best time would’ve just gotten her into the A final, too. She would’ve also made C finals in the 50, 100, and 200 free as well as the 200 fly.

Murphy has what it takes to score at the conference level as a freshman, and her 100 fly makes her an even more valuable asset to the Bears in the future.

"I chose CAL because the second I walked on campus it felt like home. Teri and the rest of the coaching staff are incredible and I cannot wait to be a part of the CAL family. The girls on the team were so welcoming and the team atmosphere was amazing. It’s a perfect balance between athletics and academics and I’m so honored to say I’m a golden bear!!"

Murphy is Cal’s first big-time butterfly commit to their class of 2020. She joins Alexa Buckley, Aislinn Light, Chenoa Devine, and Keaton Blovad.

Olympic Trials Distance Swimmer Anina Lund Commits to Cal

The Danish-American National Fills A Big Gap for the Bears

Anina Lund, who currently trains at Badger Swim Club, has committed to the University of California, Berkeley. Lund a distance swimmer who in addition to pool swimming was selected as one of twelve female athletes for the US Open Water Select Camp in 2014. Lund has swum her strongest times in LCM, particularly in the summer of 2014 where she finished 9th at Summer Juniors in the 800 free and 1500 free alongside a 17th place 400 free:

• 500 freestyle: 4;49.40
• 1650 freestyle: 16:27.90
• 200 freestyle: 1:50.58

Lund rarely races anything other than freestyle events, in fact for the 2014-2015 season she has just one non-freestyle recorded time. Owing to her dual-nationality (Lund is also a citizen of Denmark), Lund has also competed internationally. In 2013 she was part of Sigma Swim’s Danish Team National Championship. She returned to Denmark in 2015 where she won a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle at the Danish Open. She has also competed at the 2015 Geneva International Championship, taking silver in the 400 free after Lindsey Vrooman. Lund also competed in the 2014 USA Swimming Open Water Championship 10k, finishing 20th.

While Lund’s 500 freestyle time would have placed her 5th on last year’s depth chart, her 1650 will give an immediate boost to the Bears, who despite the great performances by Cierra Runge were relatively weak in distance. Lund will need to improve moderately in order to make Cal’s NCAA roster, as the last invited time in 2015 for the 1650 was 16:17. Even qualifying may not guarantee her a place on Cal’s roster, given the NCAA potential on the Bears. Her 500 and 1650 would have put her in top 16 and top 8 respectively at last year’s PAC-12 Championship meet.

Cal Lands 2nd Generation Mykkanen: 2014 YOG Teamer Courtney

The University of California, Berkeley has kept a top talent in the family with yesterday's verbal commitment of Irvine Novaquatics' Courtney Mykkanen. Mykkanen is the daughter of former Cal All-American John Mykkanen. A 1984 Olympic Games silver medalist in the 400 free, he is still on the Golden Bears' top-ten list in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyles.

The younger Mykkanen is a double-event qualifier for 2016 Olympic Trials and one of the high school class of 2016's top backstrokers. Berkeley is a prime destination for the backstroke-inclined, and she will have an outstanding training group that includes 2015-16 freshmen Kathleen Baker and Amy Bilquist, as well as returning veterans Jasmine Mau, Catherine Ladd, and Kristin Vredeveld.

Mykkanen has been one of the nation's top swimmers since her breakout summer of 2013, when at the age of 14 she finished in the top 5 at Junior Nationals and US Open in both the 100m back and 200m back and was selected to represent Team USA at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Her top events and times from the past two seasons are:

SCY LCM
50 back 25.81 30.16
100 back 53.90 1:02.55*
200 back 1:55.96 2:14.75*
200 IM 2:01.69 2:20.34
400 IM 4:16.18 4:55.58
*2016 Olympic Trials cut

Mykkanen's times in the 100 and 200 back would have landed her just outside the "A" finals at Pac-12 Conference Championships; however, every single Golden Bear who scored in the 2015 final of the 200 back will have left by the time she gets to Berkeley. It will be the younger end of the roster who will be counted on for backstroke points.

Cal's class of 2020 is starting to take shape, with the following future teammates committing alongside Mykkanen:
Aislinn Light back/free
Alexa Buckley breast/IM/free
Chenoa Devine distance free
Keaton Blovad free/back
Maddie Murphy free/fly

Congrats to the Mykkanens. Didn't realize Courtney's mom also is s Cal grad and a current Novaquatics coach.

Novaquatics have sent a lot of talent to Cal: Mykkanens, Stacianna Stitts, Mike Cavic, and Tom Shields.

Fantastic. Really happy that this double legacy has committed to Cal.

I'm curious as to whether anyone can give perspective about the overall strength of the class. On pure rankings, it looks to me like the fourth best class in the conference (behind Stanford, USC, and Arizona). Is that accurate? Or is there another way to look at it? And what are the chances of adding another high-level recruit?

With this class and Abbey, is there room ($$$) to add any other recruits? I know there are still a few of the top 20 available (Alexandra Szekely, Beata Nelson, and Kenisha Liu) at least according to Collegeswimming. Are we still pursuing any of these (think Szekely was mentioned).

Microbear85, we basically missed on all our big targets this year, i.e. Hannah Cox, Katie Drabot, Meghan Small, and Claire Adams. That being said, this years class was not as talented as last year's class of 2015, in which we hit the jackpot with four of the top five recruits in the nation. One of those recruits from last year, the uber sprinter Abbey Weitzel, will be coming in next year with this year's recruits. She is deferring to train for the Olympics. This year's class is full raw talent, which can hopefully be developed into NCAA contributors in the future. Two of them, Chenoa Devine and Anina Lund, fill our distance needs. While not on the level of Cierra Runge, hopefully Teri can turn them into solid contributors over the course of their careers. Keaton Blovad is our highest rated recruit and is a strong IM and Breaststroker. The experts on this board are hoping she develops into a significant Breaststroke threat, because that is a huge area of need for us. Courtney Mykannen has a huge upside in the backstroke, and helps with our depth in that area. After this year, our only backstrokers will be Baker, Bilquist, and Mau. There are also high expectations for local product, Maddie Murphy in the Butterfly and IM. Not sure how much to expect from Aislinn Light (Back) and Alexa Buckley(Breast), but hopefully they will surprise us and be secret diamonds in the rough for Teri. So yes, you are right, our overall class is definitely a step behind the Furd, Arizona, and U$C. I personally like Arizona's class the best. Three of their recruits, Cox, Kennedy, and Jacobsen would have filled all of our needs perfectly. We are still hoping for an international recruit or a transfer in the Spring.

OBear, Szekely and Nelson have never visited, so are unlikely. We are hoping for an impact international recruit or a transfer in the Spring.

Bears needed one of Cox, Drabot, or Small. Need a fourth leg (McL, Baker, Abbey) for the 800 Free relay. May be able to grow Jenna Campbell or Bilquist into the role. 400 IM is also a need and Baker or Blovad may fit there.

Ideal international and/or transfer would be 800 Free relay leg, 500 Free, 400 IM, and 1650 Free. LSJU will be the 2017 favorite and Bears can't get shut out in distance while Ledecky, Leah Stevens, and Megan Byrnes pile up points. Looks like Georgia has significantly fallen back after two crappy classes. Two team race in 2017, but UVa, Texas, and 'SC are also in the hunt. 'Zona's a year or two away from truly contending nationally.

Something squirrelly going on with LSJU and Szekely/Liu. AS took all five visits and still hasn't commit. Liu wants in, but AS may be holding up her slot. Assume Liu ends up on the farm if Szekely goes to UVa or 'SC. Otherwise Liu goes to Harvard, Duke, or UCLA.

I just find it perplexing from going to the best class in 2015, winning a championship, and building a new swim center to missing all of our big targets in 2016. I realize one year is different from another but just hard to comprehend we missed on all of our big targets.

No offense to Ledecky, but on paper Abbey will generate more total points annually and swim for more seasons. With that kind of production you don't need too much more in a season with limited slots and a historic haul the prior year.

Cuonzo and Yanni brought in Jsylen and Rabb last season, but Jayce Johnson (Utah) and Vance Jackson (UConn) clearly weren't great fits for guys whose sole focus is hoops. Nothing wrong with that, but Cal isn't going to win many of those battles right now.

Drabot chose the wrong side of the Bay, but at least the big ass Taco Bell is in the same ball park for swimming and academics. No evidence that Adams was ever interested in Cal. Cox and Small were great swimming fits, but 'Zona and Tennessee aren't swimming or academic upgrades.

Coaches have to pre-qualify recruits better and focus on athletic, academic, and cultural fits. 8 of 9 2015 Cal seniors swam on two NCAA championship teams and all 9 graduated from Cal on time. Not all were great swimmers, but all wanted to be at Cal for the right reasons and were stellar Golden Bears.

Bears need at least one sprinter in 2017 (Farida, KV). Best options are Lauren Pitzer, Marta Ciesla, and Ashley. Assumed Ashley was headed to UVs since her sister, a former swimmer, rows for the 'Hoos.

If all goes according to plan, 2017 targets will be a sprinter, Popov/Aroesty, Schmidt/Harnish/Rongione, Taylor Ault, and Kuks.

Assuming AS is on her way to the farm. Liu wouldn't have verballed to UCLA if she still had a shot at LSJU. Was hoping Liu would go to Duke and AS to Carolina.

AS only visited UNC to help out club teammates, one who's going to UNC and the other to Penn State. AS to Georgia may be the best outcome. Shows how far they've fallen since LSJU, 'SC, and UVa are bigger future threats than Georgia right now.

Same way 'SC does-they have significantly deeper financial aid packages than public schools. Theoretically if Katie Ledecky's family income were below a certain level, she could go to school for free and they wouldn't "waste" an athletic scholly on her. Family income levels for financial aid are significantly higher at Cal.

Georgia pads their teams via statewide academic merit tuition waivers. Essentially all of Cal's student body could attend for free if CA had a similar program. Georgia's recruiting has cratered, so they've loaded up on in-state recruits with mediocre times because they don't use athletic funds.

The flagship university in the largest state is hardly hurting for recruits, but it's fair to point out when apples aren't oranges. Cal isn't hurting for elite talent, but the playing field isn't (financially) level either.

BD - cheers for the great explanation - does make me feel a mite frustrated that our main rivals have the luxury of enjoying this financial advantage over us when it comes to recruiting  But OTOH reckon Bears didn't do too shabbily the last recruiting class with the Dream Team, which was much needed after Missy's farewell + the graduation of a key class where most of the seniors contributed to the scoring at Nationals!

Allie Szekely - 29 Oct

So excited to announce my verbal commitment to Stanford University!!! Thank you to my family, friends, coaches and teammates who have been my side since the beginning. Can't wait to see what the next 4 years have in store ❤️

After Kenisha Liu wound up at UCLA, it was expected that Allie would go to the dark side.

Scary class on the farm. They're built for 2017 and are especially strong (distance: Ledecky, Stevens, Brynes, diving: Cook) where the Bears are weak.

New sense of urgency for the Bears in 2016 and a need for an international/transfer who can contribute immediately on the 800 Free Relay, distance, and 400 IM. Georgia's domestic recruiting has collapsed. Lots of holes and money to spend, so may be competiting directly with Cal for international(s). Bears may finish out the early signing period with an elite diver.

Still curious about Pleasnton's Moriah Simonds and Beata Nelson. Moriah's from the same club as Li, Silverthorn, and Breed. Too much duplication with Chenoa, but a very good swimmer.

Also curious about Nelson-not coming to Cal, but a Madison local thought to be a lock for the Badgers. If she goes elsewhere, may be extremely dicey for UW coach Whitney Hite (former Teri asst). Wisconsin has a million less people than the Bay Area. Extremely rare to have two top ten recruits (Beata, Drabot) plus a top 40 recruit (Cassy Jernberg-IU). Drabot and Jernberg didn't even visit. If Hite whiffs on all three, he may be get the boot (lousy recruiting, asst turnover). If Cierra's former NBAC coach doesn't get elevated or retained, she may be looking again. Not coming back to Cal, but didn't jump into a very stable environment either.

If they're going pro it would be in the Spring so they could monetize projected Olympic success with ads shot before the games. Manuel doesn't have the name/visibility yet to make the leap.

Ledecky clearly does. Slight chance she does go pro now since female distance swimmers don't have long careers. Brynes is a very good swimmer, but think they brought her in specifically as a hedge against Ledecky leaving early or not swimming at all. Another sprinter is a bigger immediate need than additional distance scoring.

In the end, Coach Meehan did a pretty good job with my 2016 recruiting list. I'm expecting a check in the mail any day now. However, I think he missed out on the recruit he wanted the most, Claire Adams. The furd will be a juggernaut next year, but they are not without their holes. Claire could have been the elite backstroke recruit that they so desperately wanted. Not only would she have scored well individually, but she would have made their medley relays lights out. The furd still have Ally Howe and Janet Hu, but they are not on the same level as Claire. The other hole in the furd's team next year that no one is talking about, is the graduation of their best breaststroker, Sarah Haase. Heidi Poppe has not proven to be elite yet, Ella Eastin would be a step down from Haase, and Allie Szekely is more of a 200Y swimmer than a sprint breaststroker. Like I said early on, when the rankings first came out, 2016 #1 recruit, Meghan Small is equal in talent to Ella Eastin, so that means Abbey, Amy, Katie, and Kathleen (aka the Dream Team) would each have been the number one recruit if they were part of the 2016 recruiting class. The furds big class does put a lot of pressure on Teri to recruit well for 2017, and at the very least get a knockout transfer or international in the Spring. (FWIW, it still doesn't make sense to me that the furd loses Haase, but gains Ledecky, Drabot, Szekely, Voss, Byrnes, Boyd, and Stenstrom. I don't care how much financial aid they are getting, there is something essential unfair about that if only private schools have that advantage.) So in the end, the furd did very well this year in recruiting, but it's not as bad as it may look on the surface for our Bears.

Ledecky/Manuel/Neal/Drabot is potentially an NCAA record 800 relay, but there aren't bonus points attached to that. Baring any DQs, neither team will pull away from the other based on relays alone in 2017. Bears will have a big advantage in fly and the furdettes will have big advantages in middle distance, distance, and diving. Bears can't get to parity there, but still need to address those areas as they finish off the class via prep, transfer, and international now and in the late signing period. Two team race, so basically becomes a high stakes three day dual meet based on match ups.

Signing day. Will be interesting to see which diver the Bears add and if any additional locals are added. Still curious about Moriah Simonds.
