If there's even a slight chance of reinjury, McL should sit out the rest of the season and hope to be ready for Olympic Trials. Tough since looks the Bears' best shot at a title before a super team emerges on the farm, but this McL may be McL's shot at the Olympics. She'll still have three more years as a Golden Bear.

Cal men's score is about right. Have swum enough SCY meets, just not taper meets. Times will drop, but relative scoring will be roughly the same. Texas men's score is depressed, should be well over 500 points.

Georgia and LSJU women's scores are about right. UVa is a surprise. Bears haven't swum enough SCYs, but that score is way too low. With a healthy McL, should be around 400 points.

Assume no projected diving points included.

Virginia is ranked high here partly cos of Leah Smith, Courtney Bartholomew & Kaitlyn Jones, backed by half a dozen others.

Sort of makes sense based on their times achieved thus far in the season...for example, these UVa swimmers would be currently seeded Top 8 i.e. NCAA A finals in their respective events:

Leah Smith (200, 500 & 1650 free)
Courtney Bartholomew (100 & 200 back, 200 IM)
Kaitlyn Jones (100 Fly, 200 IM, 400 IM)

Supported by Top 16 seeds i.e. NCAA B finals:

Caitlin Cooper (50 free)
Ellen Thomas (100 free, 100 fly)
Megan Moroney (100 & 200 free)
Hanne Borgersen (500 free)
Jennifer Marrkand (200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM)
Laura Simon (100 & 200 breast)

More tellingly, here are the present rankings of Virginia's 5 relay squads - pretty impressive, eh?

200 free relay (#1)
400 free relay (#6)
800 free relay (#6)
200 medley relay (#1)
400 medley relay (#1)

Compare the above to Cal's current relay rankings:

200 free relay (#27)
400 free relay (#24)
800 free relay (#52)
200 medley relay (#29)
400 medley relay (#22)

Obviously this is a markedly lopsided & woefully inaccurate representation of the power hierarchy since several major players such as :bear:s haven't yet fielded a rested relay team at this point! A clearer picture should emerge after all the conference championships have been contested this month.

Virginia will surely remain a Top 5 contender if demoted a couple of spots, with #16 Indiana (Lilly King, Miranda Tucker & co.) and #13 Michigan (Siobhn Haughey, Ali Deloof, Clara Smiddy, Gillian Ryan etc.)'s stock rising higher, likely as high as the Top 10.

Bears (even w/o Katie) should still rank amongst the Top 3, imho :p

In other news, here's a different ranking, sort of based on teams that high school athletes have shown the most interest in being recruited by:

STANFORD Freshman Amy Bilquist won the 100 and 200 backstroke events, each with season-best times, but the No. 3 Cal women's swimming & diving team fell to No. 2 Stanford, 172-128, on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center.

Bilquist took the 100 back with a time of 52.59 and captured the 200 back with a mark of 1:53.80. She also finished second in the 50 free to teammate Farida Osman, who won after clocking in with a time of 22.45.

"We have some people that are really fighting hard," Cal coach Teri McKeever said. "I think we have some places that we need to keep working on as we move forward."

Junior Celina Li won the 1000 free with a time of 9:58.98 and sophomore Noemie Thomas took the 100 butterfly in 52.58.

Saturday marked the end of the dual meet season. The Bears (6-2, 5-2 Pac-12) will now start focusing on the Pac-12 Championships, to be held Feb. 24-27 in Federal Way, Wash.

"I think our job right now is to individually kind of pick one or two things where we can improve in the next two weeks," McKeever said. "We need to do that and be OK with where that takes us. We need to do some of the little things better."

Meanwhile, might want to keep an eye out on the form of potential challengers racing at this week's various conference championships - SEC (Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU etc.), Big Ten (Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Ohio State etc.), AAC (Virginia, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech etc.)...

Think that dual meet ranking is reasonably fair, but not all that meaningful. LSJU and 'SC did beat the Bears and Georgia probably would too. Haven't followed Michigan's and UVa's dual results close enough to hazard a guess in hypothetical duals with the Bears.

Would not be surprised if either Bay Area school won PAC-12s, although 'furdettes will be favored. UVa may move ahead of Cal in the next SS power rankings (based on expected NCAA finish). Sad that it will be seen as a tragedy if Bears finish fourth at NCAAs, but Teri's a victim of her own success and teams' expectations.

I stand corrected hehe - BearDevil, your salient point about pressure & expectations from others as a result of Teri's impressive history of success @ Cal (& beyond) hits closer to home I think than my flippant remark with regards to her own elevated standards. My gut feeling is that McKeever would be just as happy with guiding her protgs/swimming family to finding themselves both in and out of the pool on their ongoing life journeys as she would be winning yet another NCAA title! Obviously there's also the sobering reality of our head coach's position & standing being tied to concrete results/achievements and the attendant expectations placed upon one of the premier collegiate swimming powerhouses...

Was surprised and sad when Teri said she was scared to be coaching Missy during her first press conference. Programs are in different planes, but Tedford didn't say that about DeSean and Cuonzo didn't say that about Jaylen and Rabb.

It's not just PR BS that Teri genuinely wants to develop complete young women. Make no mistake that winning at the highest level is a huge part of the equation. The recent Kim Vandenberg article wasn't all puppies and butterflies. Lot of pressure at the top and not for everyone, even if it's not a win at all costs meat grinder program.

Well sort of hoping that others will do the dirty work for us at this year's NCAAs when it comes to limiting the furdettes' individual scoring in the breast events lol.

Really need breast studs from other schools to push down title threat Haase (LSJU) - freshies Lilly & Miranda (IU) + Riley & Kirsten ('SC), Katarine & Abby (Tenn), Andrea (Louisville), Jorie & Bethany (A&M), Emily (Purdue), Madisyn (Texas)...I'm banking on all of you to come thru for the Bears! :p

Relatively good news for us is it doesn't look like Heidi or Kim will contribute much to the NCAA scoring for LSJU this season either (in breast events), judging by their progress thus far...

Very happy with Indiana's Lilly King's record-breaking swims @ B1Gs, she will be just the ticket to take away points from the furds in the breast events! Virginia's Leah Smith (former Teri recruit) should also do some damage to Georgia's distance scoring after her NCAA record race in the mile @ ACCs. Louisville freshie Mallory Comerford will be someone to watch out for in the 200 free.

Altogether some very fast swimming this week, not unexpected in an Olympic year. Some of these eye-catching times from the conference champs may not be reproducible @ NCAAs next month, whilst others will go even quicker if they nail their tapers for nationals. Hard to extrapolate from conference results as their scoring & timetable formats aren't always equivalent to NC2As, but may be a more tightly contested battle this season than ones in recent memory.

May have to keep an eye on teams like UVa, A&M, USC and the likes who could threaten in the Top 5. Can't completely overlook Tenn with their strong relays, Louisville sporting several top end talents, NC State surprising @ ACCs, Texas & UofA will be in there somewhere, + Mich & Ind who should perform well at the big dance thanks partly to their stellar froshies - even if most of these programmes don't have quite enough depth at this stage to seriously challenge the Big 3 (Cal, Furds & UGA).

Can't wait to see how our Bears will fare @ Pac-12s commencing this Wed, though understandably a mite nervous about qualifying cuts at this stage...

Hey, Bear fans!

The regular season has come to a close, and the team is busy preparing for the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, WA, that start next week, as well as midterm season. This time of the year is all about taking care of the little things in and out of the pool, and that's just what we are doing! Being able to practice sharp and short efforts that fine tune our races is making all the difference as we roll in to this exciting part of the year.

This week, we're giving you a pump-up video that will hopefully help you get as excited about Pac-12's as we are!

Bears are sunk without McL in 2016. Individual A cuts aren't a big deal, sufficiently high Bs will do. Relay qualification on the other hand...

Unfortunately Katie had some (health?) issues during Winter Nats, so weren't able to get the high B cuts that she was expected to at the time.

Even if McL were to recover quickly enough to strive for her NCAA cuts @ Pac-12s in 3 weeks' time (looking unlikely as tedbear saw her with a neck brace just a week & a half ago after the ASU dual), it'd be quite a challenge even with her innate talent & determination to get back to anywhere close to Katie's competition form, esp. considering her presumably limited training & yardage since the Hawaii training trip. The field as a whole tends to be significantly faster too in an Olympic year.

Great find and qualified good news, UAC. McL's not swimming 100 Fly/200 Free at PAC or NCAAs-back to back events. Way too much coming off an injury mixed with multiple relays.

Baker's individual program is exactly as anticipated.

Amy in the 200 Free is an unexpected curve ball. May mean that McL is iffy on the 800 Free Relay. Best healthy relay would be Baker, McL, Pelton, Acker.

Yes, absolutely agree on the need to temper my unbridled enthusiasm above with a spot of cautious optimism lol.

Katie really needs to have just 1 lights out swim to get her NCAA 'A' cut (which she would normally have no trouble doing at all if she had been 100% fit), as that should get her into nationals for her other 2 events (believe/hope she already has 'B' cuts there).

Perhaps consider putting kt on the 800 free relay Wed evening (no individuals and everyone will be relatively fresh) as Cal does stand a great chance of getting an 'A' cut in that particular relay esp with McL on the squad...after which Teri can always rest her from the remaining relays, since an 'A' cut in just 1 relay will get all the other relays in automatically I believe...

Making a major contribution to a 3rd consecutive conference championship title for Bears would be ever so sweet for our freshie, but there are higher priority goals than Pac-12s to save up for (NCAAs, Olympics), so prob wisest to minimise the risk of a re-injury as she's healing up meanwhile...

btw noticed that Jenna has been press-ganged into being our lone rep in the 1650 free...without a recorded seed time :p

.

CALIFORNIA, the reigning NCAA and Pac-12 champion and the nation's No. 6-ranked team, is aiming for its fifth Pac-12 team Championship. The Bears have been a force in collegiate swimming over the past seven years, winning four NCAA team titles in that span, including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. Cal finished its regular season slate going 6-2 in dual competition, falling only to USC and Stanford. The Golden Bears are led by six-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year Teri McKeever who has produced 11 Pac-12 Swimmers of the Year. California is led by national renowned seniors Rachel Bootsma and Elizabeth Pelton, who hold top-10 times in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, respectively. Also making an impact this season is freshman Kathleen Baker, who holds the third-ranked 200 IM time in the country (1:54.56). Baker, the Pac-12 January Swimmer of the Month, won 10 individual events in the month of January.

Unless McL's fully healthy, Teri should use her sparingly at PAC-12s. Have her lead off the 800 Free Relay, potentially get an A cut, and then shut her down. Noemie could swim fly legs on the medleys. McL could improve her fly seeds via time trials which would save her from multiple swims in those events if she's not fully healed. For sure Teri wants to win another title for the seniors, but she may have to sacrifice PAC-12s if she feels Bears have a better shot at NCAAs.

Problem with Bear relays isn't qualification alone, it's also seeding. Need strong seeds, so they won't be swimming blind and early and have to exert too much energy to make A finals. Another title is predicated on at least top five relay finishes across the board. A healthy McL's a four relay swimmer for the Bears.

Senior Chosen For Excelling Both In Pool And Classroom

By Cal Athletics on Tue, February 23, 2016

BERKELEY Cal senior Rachael Acker, a two-time Academic All-American and NCAA individual and team champion, has been named the 2016 Pac-12 Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Acker, a French major who plans on attending medical school, has a lofty grade point average of 3.957. She has twice been named a CoSIDA All-American and is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection. Acker helped the Bears win the 2015 NCAA championship and swam the lead-off leg of Cal's 800 free relay team that won the 2014 NCAA title. She also had two top-10 finishes at the 2013 NCAA Championships, in the 100 and 200 free.

"I am very proud of Rachael," Cal coach Teri McKeever said. "Her excellence in the classroom and in the pool is what the university is about and what our program is about. There isn't a better representative of world-class athletics and world-class academics than Rachael. I'm just really, really proud of her and our program for such a distinguished honor."

Acker has spent time during her college career doing research in Cal's Heald Lab in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology while taking a pre-med courseload. Overall in the pool, she has swam in 10 events at the NCAA Championships.

The Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year is given annually to one senior in each of the conference's 23 sponsored sports. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, participate in at least 50 percent of his or her team's scheduled contests and be at the Pac-12 institution for at least one year.

Acker and the sixth-ranked Bears open competition Wednesday at the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Cal will be looking for its third consecutive conference title.

Well after watching the meet on PAC12 network, reading Swimswam for results, trying to factor in diving points,I found up to date team scoring to be very confusing. Now I know it is Swimming AND Diving, but I think that Cal might be leading Stanford in the SWIMMING portion of the meet points, but not sure. My last check of diving, Stanford had 89 more points in diving than us and this does not include the last platform diving results. USC's has not high diving points so I am pretty sure they top Stanford in the swimming portions of the meet. Prior to the PAC12's, I know we were not favorite to beat USC's depth.

So awaiting the results of tonight's finals, I can seriously say I am very proud of our Lady Bears performances in the meet. Great efforts and time improvements for many Cal swimmers.

Was always pretty clear that Farida was going to improve significantly at Cal: better coaching, training partners, and facilities than in Cairo. Dream Team was a little tougher to predict since all were extremely accomplished already and coming from the best club and high school teams in America. Amy's physically gifted and already had great coaches and teammates in IN and AZ, but she still managed to improve big time as a froskie. Initially saw her primarily as a sprinter: 50/100 Free, 100 Back. She's still got all that, plus range out to 200 Free and 200 Back. Was worried that Bears needed additional 2017 support in the latter two events, but not anymore.

Boots was an unsung hero on last year's NCAA relays, but she's really a solid sprinter. Shows how dominant the prior Bear teams were that she was never needed in the individual 100 Free. Most championship teams are built purely around sorinters, but Teri's recruiting for versatility wrinkle almost always pays off. Swap out Boots' usual 200 Fly for the 100 Free at NCAAs. Noemie and Naze can score in the 200 Fly. Celina's a long shot. Sadly McL and Mau probably won't even qualify.

Pelton's the ultimate teammate and she's had kind of a rough season. Still a three event/one relay scorer, but she needs to improve her times for much needed additional NCAA points. A Cal HOF swimmer on at least one NCAA championship team and two PAC championship teams, but overshadowed by Missy, Boots, Amy, and Baker in her best events. Would have been the undisputed star almost everywhere else. Same applies to a lesser extent for Celina and Naze. Says a lot about their commitments to Cal, their teammates, and Teri. Pelton and Naze aren't the best swimmers on this team and the team may not win another title, but both have been exemplary Golden Bears. Could see Amy, Celina, and KV as 2017 Captains.

Marina and KV both qualified individually in two events. Marina was an NCAA scorer in the 200 Breast last season. Would be nice to see both as multiple individual and relay scorers late in the Cal careers. Naze built a stellar senior year after finally scoring at NCAAs as a junior.

It seems like we are a lock for 3rd place. Which i'm totally okay with, given the amazing effort and times put on by Cal women.

How do you guys feel about our chances at the NCAA's after this meet? I think I feel better than prior to the pac-12 championship. But it's still going to be an uphill battle. Georgia didn't have the best meet at SEC's and that doesn't mean that they won't have their best meet in march. We still have so many holes. Marina was able to score in 100 br and 200 br but probably wont score much at the NCAA's. So that's 500 fr, 1650 fr, 100 br, 200 br, 3 diving events that we probably won't score in. It'd be pretty magical if we won, but Amy Bilquist came through huge and both Farida and Noemi are swimming so well.

Sad that Katie McL won't be able to swim at the NCAA's. She was probably looking forward to it. Feel bad but I hope she recovers quickly.

2016 Women's Pac-12 Wrapup: USC Wins It With Depth
https://swimswam.com/2016-womens-pac-12-wrapup-usc-wins-it-with-depth/

Pretty good PAC 12 points analysis here. Overall depth matters more in dual meets and conference meets than at NCAAs, where quality depth matters more. My initial gut feeling was that NCAAs would be a three team race: Georgia, LSJU, and Cal, but the above link makes a case for the Bears. Not an absolute favorite, but definitely in the hunt to repeat. May come down to the relays.

Amy Bliquist is amazing!!! 200 Back Pac 12 Champion! Not so long ago we talked about Amy might having the most upside of any member of the Dream Team. That statement is slowly coming true. I wouldn't be surprised if Amy made the Olympic Team in either the 100 or 200 Back, if her progress continues. I'm also super happy to have Kathleen on our team. Kathleen, you will take down Eastin at NCAAs in the 200IM. Your championship is coming. I'm glad Teri didn't force her into the 100 Breast that many suggested here when she first signed. She is still primarily a backstroker. 200 IM, 100 Back, and 200 Back is perfect for her. I can't wait to see a healthy Katie next year, and of course, uber sprinter Abbey Weitzeil. Yeah, we didn't have a great recruiting class this year, but the cupboard is not bare.

The cut-off ranking to get into NCAAs varied between the 37th & 41st spot last year. Keep in mind that there will be several who won't race all their qualified events, thus potentially freeing up a spot for those hovering on the borderline.

At a quick glance, KV seems locked in for the 100 free, and chances are will squeak into the 50 free. Rachael may be alright for the 200 free (fingers crossed!), bur on the bubble in the 100 free.

Teri must be pretty confident that Acker's safely in since she didn't have multiple time trial swims. Team race is going to be tight, so Acker goes as a relay swimmer anyway which is against Teri's usual policy. Any individual points from Acker would be huge if she squeaks in.

Slight clarification, UAC. Acker and KV just need an invite in a single event. Then they can swim any events where they have B cuts.

Sorry had a bit of a brain fart when hastily posting that originally - was for some dodgy reason thinking at the time of only automatic invites (A cuts) qualifying for that criteria (B cuts in any other events), rather than any invites! :p

Interesting that Janet Hu's entered in the 100 & 200 back, as well as the 100 fly which she swam as exhibition @ Pac-12s (her 51.27 from prelims would have been good for 3rd in the A final there...behind Farida & $C's Kendyl Stewart, but faster than Noemie's finals swim). This compared to Janet racing the 50 free & 100/200 fly @ 2015 NCAAs.

Seems Meehan's positioning LSJU to challenge Bears' traditional domination of those two back events by slotting Janet in alongside Ally Howe here. Smart move no doubt, but really hope it backfires on the Furd when Amy/Kathleen/Bootsie (100 back) and Billy(aka Amy )/Thleen/Lizzie (200 back) show those furdettes who's still da boss in that dept, even with Missy & Melanie gone!

Wouldn't complain either if Courtney Bartholomew (UVA), Olivia Smoliga (UGA), Kira Toussaint (Tenn), Ali DeLoof (Mich) or Alexia Zevnik (NC State) lend a helping hand by pushing one of the furdie pair down into the 100 back B final - as long as that doesn't come at the expense of our women's scoring of course haha! Oh please have Bartholomew (UVA), Tasija Karosas (UT), Lisa Bratton (A&M), Danielle Galyer (UK) & Hali Flickinger (UGA) also turn out to be furd-killers/spoilers in the 200 back...

California will be competing to defend their NCAA title. If they win this year, it will be their fifth national championship in program history. Despite not having Missy Franklin this season, the Golden Bears are still projected to win, although it is expected to be a very close meet.

Stanford’s depth and relay strength has them projected to be in second place going into the meet, only 23 points behind California. Virginia is sitting in third place with 313 projected points.

The projected team scores will change around a little bit once diving scores can be added in. With three diving events at the NCAA Championships, a good diver or two can make a huge impact on the outcome of the meet.

Rank - Teams - Scores

Sad reality, but mid majors need not apply. Every one of the projected top twenty teams comes from a P5 conference (PAC, ACC, SEC, B1G, Big XXII). 'Whorns need to get their Horace Greeley on and join the PAC, Bill Walton's beloved Conference of Champions and get the 'SC out of their current POS truck stop conference.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee announced today the swimmers who qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships will be held March 16-19 at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Institute of Technology will serve as host.

A total of 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances at the Zone Diving Meets held March 7-12. The complete list of all swimmers competing in the championships is available at www.usaswimming.org/ncaa. Selected divers will be announced Sunday, March 13.

ESPN3.com will stream finals sessions on Friday and Saturday live. Wednesday's evening session, Thursday's sessions, along with the morning sessions on Friday and Saturday, will be streamed live on NCAA.com. Additionally, ESPNU will air a two-hour broadcast via tape delay at 7 p.m. ET, Tuesday, March 29. Live results for the championships will be available on NCAA.com.

65 Teams Earn NCAA Division I Invites (Official Psych Sheets)

Teams with double digit invites:

Texas A&M 13
Tennessee 13
USC 13
Cal 12
Georgia 12
Virginia 12
Auburn 11
NC State 10
Arizona 10

Speaking to the greater level of parity in women's NCAA swimming this year than we've seen in the last few years, no team had more than 13 individual swimmers invited this year (Texas A&M, USC, and Tennessee), whereas last year Georgia had 18, A&M had 16, and Cal had 16.

When will the divers be determined? Imagine Furds, AZ, and USC would have divers make the 'ship? Any of the other teams with double digit swimmer that will have diver pt potential? Cal chances of getting divers in?

Thanks in advance

Diving sectionals are next week. Phoebe has a chance to qualify, but probably not a scorer. LSJU may qualify three divers, but only Alex Clay projects as a scorer. Their best diver redshirt this season.

Ideally Teri eventually gets to 17 swim scorers and 2 diving scorers. Facilities certainly will help, but a diving coach upgrade might be in the future too.

A Look Back At The Pac-12 Championships, Ahead To NCAAs

By Cal Athletics on Thu, March 03, 2016

Hey there, Bear fans!

We just returned to Berkeley from a week in Federal Way, Wash., where we competed at the Pac-12 Championships. It was an incredible weekend filled with tough racing, fast swimming, and lots of cheering.

Your Bears returned home with three individual titles courtesy of junior Farida Osman, a double-winner, and freshman Amy Bilquist. We also brought home one relay title in the 200 freestyle relay that featured Kristen Vredeveld, Osman, Rachel Bootsma, and Bilquist. The podium was graced by a Cal cap much more than that, though. The Bears placed in the top-3 in every relay event that was swum over the four-day period, and there were only four individual events where there wasn't at LEAST one Bear on the podium!

We had SO much fun representing our university at one of the most competitive conference meets in the country, and are now tuning up for the NCAA Championships which start in less than two weeks. We are beyond excited, and hope that you are, too.

Let's keep the ball rolling. GO BEARS!
