Yes, I went to the double meet today in Berkeley. Don't think the rain (light, but on and off) hampered too many performances. Baker really coming up to high expectations, and Bilquist again was strong. Osman always consistently good... ditto Farida Osman. Arizona has a nice Frosh class. Interestingly today's program sheet still list Bonnie Brandon for Arizona, but I think she was graduated or red-shirting?. Hoping to see our Katie McLaughlin perform but she apparently still is recovering from her ailment.

I noticed Matt Grevers name on the Arizona roster as "Volunteer Assistant". Will see the meets tomorrow with ASU. Will Phelps be here tomorrow? Shields swam a solo exhibition 200 fly.

As for the Mens portion, the team was really ready to perform. Ryan Murphy was simply fabulous.. Long Guitierez very strong along with, of course, Prenot, Lynch, Norman, Pebley and Messerschmidt. There were a couple of pool records, IIR, and Dual meet records, but not School records which most schools set in Conference meets and NCAA's.

I saw the new pool on my way out but no workers today, but it was nice to siee the structures already up above the ground foundations.

Katie Mclaughlin who hurt her neck in Hawaii was wearing a neck brace. Thought the stars for the meet was Amy Bilquist for the women and Ryan 'underwater' Murphy. Saw Missy sitting in the stands with her dad. My guess she will be there tomorrow for Senior day. Maybe because of the rain meet started about 20 minutes late.

Interesting that the meet started 20 minutes late. Arizona press release claims they had a 30 minute travel delay and only 10 minutes of warm up. Seriously whiny that they would add that excuse in the press release. Meet wasn't scheduled last week and Cal didn't make the travel arrangements for them. Usual SwimSwam bile trashing Cal in the comments section. Stay classy, 'Zona.

Brandon may be injured or resting for LSJU since she already swam in meets first semester. Wouldn't make sense to redshirt second semester.

As earlier thought, Baker may swim the breast legs over Marina on the medley relays. Need Baker in the 400 and 800 Free relays too. 200 Free relay will probably be Farida and Amy for sure with McL, Boots, Hull, and Baker potentially in the mix.

Messy back in the pool, but still no Dillinger.

I will be there today, to honor two of the greatest Bears of all time, Elizabeth Pelton and Rachel Bootsma. This got me thinking about the greatest female swimmers in Cal history. Here is my top 10.

1. Natalie Coughlin
2. Missy Franklin
3. Dana Vollmer
4. Caitlin Leverenz
5. Mary T. Meagher
6. Rachel Bootsma
7. Elizabeth Pelton
8. Cindy Tran
9. Liv Jensen
10. Lauren Boyle

Close, but not quite: Sara Isokavic, Amanda Sims

Not considered: Jessica Hardy, Cierra Runge

Anyone else have a top 10 list?

I would put Emily or Tran in for Boyle. I have to research back but thought Boyle did most of her damage after graduating from Cal. If I am incorrect my apologies to Lauren!

Agree 'bout the Wildcats freshies looking good (tho not at the same level as our dream team frosh class obviously :p). They will surely be a threat down the road, with the addition of Hannah Cox & Kennedy Lohman amongst others next season.

Have heard bout Grevers' position @ U of A, was Matt actually there in person? Hard to miss the gentle giant's imposing 6' 8" frame lol! Doubt that Phelps would make the trip with the ASU team in the midst of his intensive prep for the Olympics tho (no mention in the reports of Michael from the Sun Devils v. Furdettes matchup yesterday), but you never know...he would def draw a lot of attention from the press and the crowd if he shows up @ Spieker today!

In addition to Kathleen, Amy, Farida & Noemie's solid performances, imo Kelly continues to come into her own this year, I have really high hopes for her ability to help with the scoring at the big dance in her senior year :cheer

Don't know much about diving, but feel good about Phoebe's scoring potential judging by recent competition results. Keeping my fingers crossed that Boots' relatively pedestrian times are just the byproducts of being in a heavy training cycle...and rooting hard for Katie's rapid recovery!

Can't wait to read your reports on today's meet which will also be celebrating our impressive seniors! Would be apples to oranges esp with regards to the final scoring tally, but thinking it might be fun to compare how the 2 Arizona squads fare against us v. down on the farm this weekend...

You are correct about Boyle. Cope was a world championship medalist and isn't in the all-time Cal top ten in either back. Lots of filters: World/Olympic/NCAA/American/Pac 10-12 record holders or World/Olympic/NCAA/Pac 10-12 champions.

Just got back from the meet, and survived the rain. Had a chance to wish Katie well when I saw her walking down Bancroft. She seems to be in good spirits, but that neck brace looks menacing. I hope she can heal up in time for Pac 12's and NCAA's.

Who looks great: Amy and Kathleen! So half of the Dream Team looks dreamy. As said above, hopefully another 25% can join them. Amy just oozes potential. Since Liz is graduating, Amy might be my new favorite swimmer. Also, Noemie has been lights out in the in the 100 Fly and 200 Fly, but she needs a third event.

Who looks really good: Kelly and Celina. These two are key cogs to the Championship. Kelly is by far having her best year as a senior. The key will be choosing the best events for these two. I'm thinking 200IM, 400IM, and 200 Breast for Celina, and 200IM, 100 Fly, and 200 Fly for Kelly. Rachel Acker is also looking good, and can hopefully swim a 100 and 200 Free combo along with relays.

Who looks solid: Liz, Boots, Farida, and Marina. I think these four are heavy into training, and won't look good until March, but then watch out.

Who needs to step up: Valerie and Jazmine. I was expecting more from Val. She is going to be an essential part of our Free relays, so hopefully we haven't seen the best of her yet. Jaz doesn't have any qualifying times yet, and I'm a little concerned, because she looks like she is a step behind her teammates. She did score last year at NCAA's, and her points will be more crucial this year, because the scoring will be tighter.

Who could finally make her impact: Kristin Vredeveld. If Kristin can be anywhere close to the sprinter that we thought she would be when she was recruited, then the worries about Val may be mitigated.

McL's injury sounds pretty ominous. Fortunately fly is the Bears' deepest event. 800 Free relay would be rough-Pelton, Acker, Baker, and ? KV and Hull might have to pick up some slack in the sprint relays. Teri generally avoids relay only swimmers, but might have to go that route if McL can't go and KV and/or Hull don't get individual invites.

Even after Cierra bailed, still thought Bears had a very good chance to repeat. Now think there's a minimal chance without McL. Texas is such a juggernaut that I never thought the men would win this year, but now think the men may finish higher that the women. Argh!

Yeah, completely agree. Without Katie our chance for a Championship is pretty slim. Not only is she crucial for her individual points, but she would be vital for relays too.

Well let's not assume the worst quite yet! (but OTOH be prepared for it :p)

Heard Katie was able to continue with some modified training after her injury, so let's wait on the official word as to when she may be back for competition.

Am concerned however that McL hasn't got her NCAA 'A' cut yet, as she was sick (rumoured but not confirmed) at Winter Nationals, which was Bears' big mid-season meet that they were partly rested for. Pac-12 champs may be coming up too soon for her to return to competition healthy & ready to get that A invite?

Happy tho that Katie appeared to be in good spirits when you had bumped into her last Sat, tedbear!

On a brighter note...

The No. 3 California women's swimming & diving team continues Pac-12 dual meet play this weekend when it travels South to take on a pair of ranked teams in Los Angeles. After a nearly three-month break from dual meet competition, the Bears resumed the college season last weekend with a pair of impressive performances in wins over No. 9 Arizona and Arizona State. Cal continues to get a lift from its freshman - Amy Bilquist was named the CollegeSwimming Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week after winning seven events over the weekend (five individual, two relay), and Kathleen Baker owns top-10 times in three different events nationally this season.

BEARS SET HIGH MARKS
The Bears have several swimmers who have put up times that rank in the top-10 in the country this season. Freshman Kathleen Baker has notched three top-10 times, including the fifth-best mark in the 200 backstroke at 1:52.15. She also comes in at No. 6 in the 100 back (51.81) and 200 IM (1:55.87). Sophomore Noemie Thomas ranks fourth in both the 100 fly (51.65) and 200 fly (1:54.98). Seniors Rachel Bootsma (100 back), Elizabeth Pelton (200 back) and Kelly Naze (100 fly) and junior Farida Osman (50 free) all have also set top-10 times this season.

Well, the women of Troy eked out a narrow 153-147 victory over our Bears this evening. We were actually 143-140 ahead after the penultimate event (200 IM), but SC's squads went 1,3 in the 200 free relay.

Waiting for the official stat breakdowns and write-ups...

Think we went 1-2-3 in the 200 Back (Amy, Liz, Kelly), Amy also won the 200 Free and was out-touched 0.02 sec by Anika to end up 3rd in the 50 free (Farida won that event), Noemie, Farida, Boots made it 1,3,4 in the 100 fly, Kathleen won the 100 back & 500 free but the latter killed her for the 200 IM, Kelly & Noemie went 1-2 in the 200 fly.

But we got squashed in the breast & distance events which prob isn't much of a surprise lol (with the notable exception of Kathleen's win in the 500), lost the 100 free (to Anika), 200 IM (to Riley), diving (no Phoebe), and both relays. Katie would have been the difference maker if she had been healthy here!

LOS ANGELES - Freshmen Amy Bilquist and Kathleen Baker each won two races but the No. 3 Cal women’s swimming & diving team fell to No. 7 USC 153-147 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Friday night.

Baker won the 500 free in the fastest time by a Cal swimmer this season, completing the race in 4:45.49. She also took home the 100 back with a mark of 52.95.

Bilquist, meanwhile, won a pair of events for the third consecutive dual meet, winning the 200 free in a time of 1:47.12 and the 200 back by clocking in at 1:55.86.

The meet went back and forth the entire evening. The Bears entered the final event of the night – the 200 free relay – with a slim lead, but the Trojans won it to go back in front for the close victory.

“It was a lot of fun,” Cal coach Teri McKeever said. “It was back and forth the whole way. I’m really proud of them, and I’m looking forward to what will happen tomorrow.”

The Bears (5-1, 4-1 Pac-12), who dropped their first dual meet of the season Friday, are back in the pool Saturday with a dual meet at No. 19 UCLA. The meet begins at Noon.

Other Cal winners Friday included senior Kelly Naze in the 200 butterfly (1:56.23), junior Farida Osman in the 50 free (22.51) and sophomore Noemie Thomas in the 100 butterfly (52.25). Senior Sara-Lina Boushakra won the 3-meter diving event, scoring a season-high 286.35.

Phoebe must be injured if she didn't compete. Riley Scott's a bit of a mystery. Teri may have low balled her since she preferred Baker and Eastin in IM and breast and Salo swooped in early. Teri also went after Vose so she either miscalculated on Scott or didn't offer at all.

Team was built for NCAAs and is flawed without Cierra and McL. Was never going to be a great dual meet team, but really rough with Baker in the 500 and no Phoebe.

400 IM: Celina hits the wall first (4:15.03), 7+ sec ahead of Arlyn Upshaw's 4:22.22. Madi (4:28.51) would have placed 4th, but not scored here (exhibition?).

400 free relay: :bear:s' 'B' team (Rachael/KV/Amy/Farida) comes away with the win (3:20.78). Our 'A' team (Cat/Boots/Val/Liz) exhibits with a time of 3:23.60 which would have been good for 3rd, just a bit slower than the top UCLA 'A' squad's 3:23.45.

In other news, LSJU has managed to put down USC, in spite of the women of Troy breaking the pool record with a 3:17.69 in the final event (400 free relay). Final score 152-148.

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 Cal women's swimming & diving team set a UCLA pool record in the 400 freestyle relay in defeating the 19th-ranked Bruins 185-114 on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Center.

The Bears' 400 freestyle relay team of Rachael Acker, Kristen Vredeveld, Biquist and Farida Osman set the new pool standard, winning in a time of 3:20.78.

Freshman Amy Bilquist just missed the pool record in the 100 backstroke, winning in a time of 52.75. The facility record of 52.69 was set by Stanford on Friday night.

Cal was back in action Saturday afternoon less than 24 hours after a narrow loss in a dual meet at No. 7 USC on Friday evening.

"The girls did a nice job of rebounding from a late meet last night and coming back and being tough today," Cal coach Teri McKeever said. "I'm proud of the way we raced in a short amount of time."

Cal dominated the short freestyle events, sweeping the top three places in both the 50 free and 100 free. Junior Farida Osman, Valerie Hull and Kristen Vredeveld were the top three finishers in the 50 free while Bilquist, junior Rachael Acker and Vredeveld swept the top spots in the 100 free. Sophomore Noemie Thomas, senior Rachel Bootmsa and Osman were also the top three finishers in the 100 butterfly.

Thomas was another multiple winner, taking the 200 butterfly as well.

Senior Anne Kastler won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 288.38.

The Bears will close out the dual meet season on Feb. 13 at No. 2 Stanford before getting ready for the Pac-12 Championships at the end of the month.

"I'm looking forward to finishing up the dual meet portion of the season with Stanford in a couple weeks," McKeever said. "There is a lot of good stuff to build on. Now we'll get to have a break next weekend and go with the final push.

Not a single :bear: made it on this list, as opposed to several furdettes & dawgs who have already earned their 'A' cuts.

To be fair, our women haven't raced rested in the NCAA's SCY format this season as their major mid-winter meet was long course, so the invites should start to pop up @ conference champs at the end of the month...though I'll admit to feeling a mite uneasy that Teri has left it until the last moment to aim for automatic qualification spots @ Pac-12s (esp with regards to relays), in light of the various injuries (Katie, possibly Jaz) + an impactful defection (Cierra). On the bright side, quite a few on the team have already put down high 'B' times.

May turn out to be a fierce & closely-contested dog-fight between more than the usual suspects (Cal, LSJU & UGA) at the big event, as outstanding individuals like UVA's Courtney Bartholomew (100 & 200 back) & Leah Smith (500 & 1650), and Louisville's Kelsi Worrell (100 fly & more) will surely threaten for the title in their respective events. All good if this was to come at the expense of Georgia's Brittany MacLean & Hali Flickinger as well as Stanfurd's Janet Hu!

I'm also rooting for IU's Lilly King to take down Sarah Haase in the 100 breast. Kathleen will hopefully prevail against Ella Eastin in the 200 IM, but the 400 IM's looking to be Ella's race to lose. Wouldn't mind a little help from some of the lower profile teams to push down the scoring from Lia Neal & co., plus limit the damage from the usual top-end freestyle depth of Georgia, but ultimately it will be up to the Bears to determine their own fate.

5 Pac-12 Headlines From This Past Week

1. The No. 7 USC women upset the No. 3 California women on Friday. Maybe California had an off day, maybe USC had a really good day, maybe it was a combination of the two, but it was definitely a shock to the system for California. With really strong swims from USC freshman Riley Scott and junior Anika Apostalon, the Trojan women could pose a major threat to some of the established hierarchy of Pac-12 swimming at the conference championship.

2. The No. 2 Stanford women are still undefeated, but that's not really a surprise at this point. Ranked second in the country behind the Georgia women, Stanford is looking strong going into the final stretch of their season. Janet Hu and Lia Neal among others, are going to play major rolls for this team come championship season.

Women in Position for NCAA Qualifying Via LCM Conversions

When the NCAA released its time standards for the 2016 Division I men's and women's NCAA Championship meet last August, the announcement noted how long course meter times would also be accepted as a qualifying course.

Below is each event with last year's slowest time having been invited to the NCAA Championships. We've then listed those women who have achieved at least that time via a long course meters swim once converted to SCY, using the NCAA standard methodology.

Women such as Cal's Farida Osman and Amy Bilquist reaped dividends competing at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin, each having clocked B cuts in their respective events while competing in the long course meet. The same holds true for others who attended the U.S. Winter Nationals, where Louisville's Kelsi Worrell earned her A cut in the women's 100 butterfly and Indiana Lilly King nabbed solid marks in her breaststroke events.

Unfortunately Katie had some (health?) issues during Winter Nats, so weren't able to get the high B cuts that she was expected to at the time.

Even if McL were to recover quickly enough to strive for her NCAA cuts @ Pac-12s in 3 weeks' time (looking unlikely as tedbear saw her with a neck brace just a week & a half ago after the ASU dual), it'd be quite a challenge even with her innate talent & determination to get back to anywhere close to Katie's competition form, esp. considering her presumably limited training & yardage since the Hawaii training trip. The field as a whole tends to be significantly faster too in an Olympic year.

There's always the option of last-minute time trials I suppose, but I'd prepare to be resigned to the very real possibility that Bears will have to fall back on only half of Dream Team 2015 (Kathleen & Amy) come March...next season will be a different story with the complete Dream Team to call on upon Abbey's arrival, but the challenge will be even tougher then with the Furd fielding a truly formidable crew consisting of Ledecky, Manuel, Drabot, Szekely, Voss, Byrnes on top of Eastin, Neal & Hu... Trojans & Wildcats will also be on the rise with their stellar freshman classes of 2016.

Anyway, echoing BD's sentiments below, cheering Katie on as she bravely fights through recovering from her injuries, and wishing her the very best in her prep for Olympic trials where she has a great chance of qualifying for Rio - go KT!

Speaking of "the Dream Team":

Baker Takes Pac-12 Monthly Honor

Freshman Sets Two Top-10 Times Nationally

By Cal Athletics on Wed, February 03, 2016

Cal freshman Kathleen Baker has been named the Pac-12 women's swimmer of the month, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Baker had a spectacular month, setting two top-10 times nationally and winning 10 dual meet events. At the Austin Arena Pro Swim Series, Baker raced the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:52.15 (converted time from meters), which is the fifth-best mark in the country this season. She followed that up with a 51.81 (converted time from meters) in the 100 back, good for the sixth-best time nationally in 2015-16.

Baker played a huge role in the then-No. 7 Bears beating then-No. 9 Arizona in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex. She won three individual events the 100 back, 200 back and 200 individual medley. She came back the following day to win the 500 free and also helped Cal win the 400 free relay in a victory over Arizona State.

In a narrow loss to No. 7 USC, Baker won the 500 free and 100 back while taking the 200 back and helping the No. 3 Bears win another relay in a win over No. 19 UCLA.

This is the 13th time a Cal women's swimmer has been named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month, tying for the most by any school since the award's inception.

Bears Honor Seniors And Look Ahead To Rivalry Week

With the regular season nearing a close, here in Berkeley we've been celebrating our seniors in their last season as Golden Bears. They have given this team a lot in the past four years, and it's only fitting that we honor them with just as much style and spunk they've brought to us every day.

This month, we contested our last two home dual meets against The University of Arizona and Arizona State, and traveled down to Los Angeles to take on USC and UCLA. The team has continued to progress in and out of the pool, managing tough training and a new semester in the classroom. We are excited for what the rest of the season holds, and hope that you are as well!

Rivalry week is quickly approaching, as we are taking on Stanford in our last dual meet of the season in Palo Alto on February 13th. The team is getting in to the spirit, and everyone is excited to race a team that has always challenged us to be our best no matter what time in the season it is.

As always, see you next time and GO BEARS!

If there's even a slight chance of reinjury, McL should sit out the rest of the season and hope to be ready for Olympic Trials. Tough since looks the Bears' best shot at a title before a super team emerges on the farm, but this McL may be McL's shot at the Olympics. She'll still have three more years as a Golden Bear.
