MINNEAPOLIS The Cal women's swim team had three finishers in the top-10 in the 100 backstroke Friday on the second day of the Minnesota Arena Pro Swim Series at the University Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.

Senior Rachel Bootsma placed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.02, freshman Amy Bilquist was seventh at 1:01.39 and fellow freshman Kathleen Baker finished eighth by clocking 1:01.47.

The Bears had two swimmers place in the top-10 in the 200 butterfly. Freshman Katie McLaughlin was fifth at 2:12.08 while sophomore Noemie Thomas finished sixth at 2:12.38.

Junior Marina Garcia was fourth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:27.26 while fellow junior Farida Osman was also fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.09.

Cal closes out competition in the event Saturday with the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 800 freestyle.

400 Free - Ledecky is in a league of her own. Becca Mann continues to impress. Did I mention that we are going to miss Cierra? Taylor Ault, a 2017 recruit, makes the B final.

It's conceivable that both Leah Smith (subtract KV) and Cierra (subtract Hull) could have been on the current Cal team. 2017 NCAA outlook would be considerably different.

Ault's already on the 2017 radar. With apologies to tedbear's O Canada 2018 recruiting class, Eva Merrell or Ruby Martin could also thrive at Butterfly (nee Backstroke) U.

Def on our radar when it comes to Taylor Ault (2017), Eva Merrell & Ruby Martin (2018)!

200m IM: Kathleen dropped the 200 back to focus on this, will be racing alongside 2018 prospect Ruby Martin in the B final there, whilst Liz got bumped up to the A final thanks to Maya DiRado & Kirsty Coventry's scratches. Boots, Marina, Celina & Kelly will rep Bears in the C final.

200m back: Missy, Liz & Melanie in the A final, which will also feature 13 year-old Regan Smith. Amy got squeezed out of the A final to qualify as the top seed for the B, but still a great effort there in the longer & gruelling backstroke distance. That prob took a lot of gas out of Amy for her next race, as she faded a bit in her back half of the 100 free:

100m free: Amy will now contest the C final in that event partnered by Katie McL, with Rachael making the D final where 2018 recruit Sam Shelton also qualified. Farida in the B final.

(Update: looks like Amy has dropped the 200 back in order to concentrate on the 100 free)

100m free (contd): Abbey's 54.58 from this morning's prelims is only 0.2 sec away from her PB achieved at 2014 Summer Nationals, and places her as the 2nd seed behind Manuel in the A final. Don't realistically expect our baby :bear: to go much faster in tonight's finals as she's in the midst of heavy training, but this early season speed bodes well for her chances to challenge Missy & Simone at OT for a spot in the 100 free individual for Rio, plus surely some engaging battles between Abbey & Simone to look forward to following this NCAA season. Missy & Camille also into the A final, with Ledecky lurking as she keeps improving her sprint speed.

Noticed a whole bunch of the women's team winning or coming 2nd in their respective prelims heat (multiple events) even tho they weren't the top seeds in that heat. Not always great times by their elevated standards, but shows considerable guts & spirit doing one's best to get one's hands to the wall first in spite of being tired from intensive training, well done there! :bravo

Looks like Abbey's Canyon Club and the Bears are roughly on the same training cycle since times for both teams (Abbey and 2017 target Nikol Popov) haven't been all that spectacular. Can't see any reason for swimmers and/or clubs to target fast times at this point.

The event schedule at Winter Nationals is identical to NCAAs although there won't be any relays and races will be in LCM. Would expect several Bears to be relatively rested and go for A cuts in their projected NCAA events. Assume Bears will qualify relays via time trials at Federal Way since Teri doesn't like to wait until PAC-12s to get the bulk of her team into NCAAs. Has the added benefit of longer recovery time between events since men's events are also contested.

Would guess that 14 swimmers will eventually qualify for NCAAs and 7 are already in or on the bubble: Boots-100 Back, Naze-100 Fly, Farida-100 Fly, 50 Free, Marina-200 Breast, Noemie-100 Fly, McL-200 Free, 100 Fly, and Amy-100 Back. Need to get Baker, Pelton, Acker, and Hull qualified since all are crucial relay pieces. Mau and Hull have had rough Falls and have the most work to do along with KV. Baker's times haven't been great either, but she has relatively fast B times in multiple events so she's maximized her program flexibility.

Does look like Marina will handle all breast legs on medley relays. Also looks like the 50 Free will be Noemie's third event and she may be in the mix with Hull, McL, KV, and Boots for the third and fourth legs on the 200 Free Relay behind Farida and Amy.

Baker's 200IM in the B final 2:14.13 converts to 1:57.63 which is pretty good. Right now, it seems that those 7 swimmers you mentioned + Baker are mostly sitting around top 5 times.

Was going to post the same re Kathleen's 1:57.63 converted time but guess I'm just too slow haha.

So looks pretty good since the A cut for the 200y IM = 1:55.35, with last year's slowest invited time at 1:58.13 (B cut = 2:01.59). Not a completely accurate comparison, but Kathleen's (converted) 1:57.63 would currently rank 2nd only to Siobhn's leading 1:57.20, the pair being the only NCAA swimmers who have breached the 1:58 barrier at this point in the season...

Thleen's winning B final time would have placed 3rd in the A final of the 200m IM tonight, over a sec faster than Bowker (2:15.18) - if our "#alphacub" had qualified from prelims. Reckon Baker (along with team members who will qualify & compete at Winter Nationals) should handily improve on that performance in 3 weeks time with some more training followed by a little rest

200 IM: Celina, Marina, Boots & Kelly went 2-3-4-6 in the C final. Rachael 6th in the D final.

100 Free: Farida won the B final, beating Kelsi Worrell. Amy & Katie 1-2 in the C final...Amy's time would have put her just behind AR holder Amanda Weir in the A final, in the 7th spot. Rachael came in 2nd in the D final.

1. Becca Mann blowing up

2. Phelps still rules 200 IM

3. Past and Future Pac-12 Rivalries in 100 free: The women's 100 free was a battle of some of the best and brightest young talents in the nation talents who all gravitated to the Pac-12. Stanford's Simone Manuel won in 54.19, just outside of the world's top 5 for the season. She had to pass up future Cal Bear Abbey Weitzeil to do it, though, and Weitzeil went 54.46 for second. Meanwhile future Stanford Cardinal Ledecky was 4th in 54.95 and former Cal Bear Missy Franklin 6th in 55.26. Manuel is redshirting this season for Stanford, and Weitzeil and Ledecky have both deferred their enrollments until next year. But within 12 months, we'll likely see all three of those young talents competing together in the Pac-12.

4. Nathan Adrian tops international field in 100 free: 5 different nations were represented in the A final of the men's 100 free, but American Nathan Adrian topped them all. The Olympic champ was 48.49, a nice starting point for his Olympic title defense, and he beat young Canadian hotshot Santo Condorelli. The A final also featured a pair of Brazilians in 3rd and 4th (Joao de Lucca and Marcelo Chierighini), a Surinamese record-holder (Renzo Tjon-A-Joe) and Hong Kong's Geoff Cheah.

Not entirely sure, but kinda looks like Mau didn't qualify for Winter Nationals. May have everything riding on Pac-12s and potentially last chance meets. No worries about Pelton and Celina getting qualified at Federal Way with minimal hassles, but Hull, Acker, and KV will be well rested. Maija, Jenna, and Ladd are long shots.

Relay qualification is a problem given Winter National format and NCAA schedule changes. 800 Free Relay has been moved to W night at NCAAs and the 200 Medley Relay has been moved to the last event on F. SCY time trials will be held at Federal Way on the Sunday after the competition is concluded. Will be tough to get all five relays qualified in a single session. May have to split relay qualification between Federal Way and PAC-12s. Only want to use time trials for relays at PAC-12s if there's a DQ during the competition.

Bears can use all their flyers in the 100 Fly since Georgia and LSJU aren't deep in fly. Need Mau as part of that equation. Georgia has overall stroke depth, but not enough high end talent and relatively weak relays. Furdettes have strong relays, but not enough stroke depth. Bears have strong relays and high end stroke depth. Just need to pile up points in strong events and minimize weaknesses against threats.

Looks like we are going to have a small number of qualifiers 13 maybe 14 for NCAAs, but I'm sure our main competitors are going to have small teams too. Thus is an olympic year. Some interesting things that I came across while looking at the times for B qualifiers on the usaswimming event ranking charts. Maija is already a B qualifier in the 100 Breast with the 23rd ranked time of 1:02.23. Marina is not only B qualified in the 200 Breast with the number 3 ranked time of 2:10.76, but is also B qualified 200 IM with the 12th ranked time of 2:00.83. Cal owns six of the top 17 times in the 100 Fly (Noemie, Farida, Katie, Kelly, Celina, and Boots). And that's not including Jaz! Oh, and for UAC, Siobhan Haughey is ranked number 1 in the 200 IM, number 1 if you don't include Simone in the 100 Free, and number 5 in the 200 Free. Too bad we didn't know earlier that Abbey was deferring . I'm confident that Acker will get in, but I'm really worried about Hull.

Thanks, UAC. Larger problem is that Mau's current in season times haven't been good in absolute terms and in relative event ranking terms. They're off so much that she may be injured. She's not even close to B cuts in any of her potential events (100 Fly/200 Fly, 100 Back, 50/100 Free). Don't need Mau on the medley relays, but a returning scorer in both flys can help eliminate Georgia and LSJU in a battle of attrition.

Bears may cede points in both breast events and the 500/1650, but can put Georgia away in sprints, fly, and relays and LSJU away in sprints, fly, and free relays.

Talent Out, Talent In For #1 Cal

Key Additions: Kathleen Baker (NC back/IM), Katie McLaughlin (CA fly/free), Amy Bilquist (IN free/back), Jennifer Campbell (CA free/fly), Madi Hurst (NV breast/IM), Phoebe LaMay (TX diving), Valerie Hull (Auburn transfer free)

Key Losses: Missy Franklin (60 NCAA points, 4 NCAA relays), Cierra Runge (49 NCAA points, 1 NCAA relays), Melanie Klaren (20 NCAA points), Caroline Piehl (18 NCAA points), Camille Cheng (9 NCAA points, 2 NCAA relays), Kaylin Bing (3 NCAA points, 1 NCAA relay)

2014-2015 Lookback

The 2015 postseason was a banner one for the Berkeley Bears after a somewhat disappointing 2014 run. Where key swimmers faltered in '14, they dominated in the current year, winning 7 of 21 total events, including 3 of 5 relays.

Most notable was the 800 free relay, which won an NCAA title by an absurd 3.7 seconds and smashed NCAA, American and U.S. Open records.

That was capped by a 1:40.05 split from sophomore star Missy Franklin, who earlier in the same night obliterated the American record in the individual 200 free with a 1:39.10. It's worth noting that those were her 3rd and 2nd, respectively, 200 frees of the day after swimming a smooth 1:41.9 in prelims.

Franklin won a trio of events, taking the 200 IM and 200 back as well, and Cal won the 200 medley and 200 free relays while never finishing lower than 3rd in a relay event.

Junior Rachel Bootsma regained her championship form, winning the 100 back while nearly breaking a Natalie Coughlin American record.

Though defending champs Georgia led through day 1, Cal fought back by placing 5 swimmers into finals of the 200 free, including three in the top eight. That points haul (57 points in a single event) vaulted the Bears into a lead they'd never give up.

Talent Out, Talent In

What's truly impressive about this Cal roster, though, is the way it's been able to accumulate talent year after year. The incredible wealth of speed in Berkeley means the Bears aren't a significantly less-threatening team even after graduating some huge contributors.

For most teams, losing two underclassmen NCAA record-breakers would be a backbreaking loss. For Cal, it just seems like the cycle of life. Franklin is gone, turned pro as she had always planned to after two years in the NCAA. More unexpected was the loss of last year's freshman distance star Cierra Runge, who will redshirt this season, then transfer to Wisconsin.

But Cal counters those two big losses with a 6-person recruiting class dense with talent. Ranked #1 in the country, this California freshman class features three of the top five swimmers in the nationwide recruiting class. With the top 2 recruits both deferring their enrollments until after the Olympics (Katie Ledecky for Stanford and Abbey Weitzeil for Cal), the Bears now boast arguably the three best freshmen in the nation.

There's U.S. World Champs team member Kathleen Baker, yet another elite-tier backstroke to add to Cal's stable. There's in-state product Katie McLaughlin, another U.S. swimmer from the World Champs team who nearly pulled off a medal in the 200 fly. And there's Carmel, Indiana standout Amy Bilquist, one of the best sprint freestylers in the class. Bilquist can also swim a mean backstroke, you know, if Cal's three other All-America level backstrokers all miss the bus to the same meet.

Cal's current roster really reflects the importance of recruiting in the NCAA's top echelon of teams. Coaching talent up and assembling well-rounded lineups are certainly important aspects of building an NCAA program, but there's really no replacement for assembling game-changing talent. Give Cal credit: they've done that in the extreme.

Free Relays reload

The biggest example of that "talent out, talent in" philosophy is in the free relays, where Cal graduated 7 of 12 relay legs and still find themselves among the NCAA favorites.

The 800 free relay is particularly jarring. Cal broke the American record in the event at Pac-12s, then switched out one leg of the relay at NCAAs and broke the NCAA Championship record. Of the 5 swimmers who combined for those two swims, only 1 returns: senior Elizabeth Pelton.

Franklin and her otherworldly 1:40.0 split is gone. Leadoff swimmer Runge is out the door. Camille Cheng and Caroline Piehl, who traded off the final slot between conference and nationals, are both gone.

But Cal may still be the favorites here, and they might even challenge their own American record. That's because freshmen Baker (1:43.61) and McLaughlin (1:43.01) both bring in lifetime-bests that could make them upgrades to the two slowest legs from last year. Bilquist is a 1:45.0 and two more Bears (senior Rachael Acker at 1:44.33 and freshman Jennifer Campbell at 1:46.3) could put themselves in the hunt with big years.

There's obviously no replacing Franklin's split there (she's the fastest 200 yard freestyler in history by a wide margin, after all), but with the NCAA expanding its event lineup to put the 800 free relay all by itself on Wednesday night, all of Cal's swimmers should be much fresher for their NCAA relay swim. It's certainly not out of the question that the extra freshness could help the Bears approach last year's insane time of 6:50.18.

Last year's second-place 400 free relay loses Franklin and Cheng, but returns big-time anchor Farida Osman as well as NCAA backstroke champ Bootsma. Osman and Bootsma are probably both better at the 50 free than the 100, which should make the defending NCAA champion 200 free relay more threatening. Bilquist and Auburn transfer Valerie Hull are both excellent sprinters who should help depth in both relay events. Helping matters even more: Pac-12 rivals Stanford have lost national 50 free champ Simone Manuel for the year to a redshirt. Stanford was the closest team to Cal at last year's NCAA Championships.

A Regenerating Backstroke Juggernaut

While those free relays will rack up the points, Cal's most loaded position group at the moment is backstroke, where the Bears are riding a recruiting streak that almost feels unfair.

Olympic champ and world record-holder Franklin is gone, but the Bears still have former NCAA champ and current American record-holder Elizabeth Pelton to hold down the fort in the 200. Specializing in the shorter backstroke distance is Rachel Bootsma, a 2012 U.S. Olympian and two-time NCAA champ in her three-year career in the 100 back.

Add Baker and Bilquist, the two best backstrokers in the nation's freshman class, and you've got a wealth of talent that could load up the NCAA's A finals in absurd ways. Maybe more likely, though, is that the freshmen will be able to use their versatility to help Cal fill holes elsewhere (Baker in IM and breaststroke and Bilquist in freestyle) while Pelton and Bootsma head up a still-menacing backstroke attack.

Bootsma is also an excellent butterflyer, and the butterfly events are Cal's sneaky-good weapon. Egyptian national record-holder Osman is among the nation's best, and Hawaiian freshman Jasmine Mau was a blue-chip pickup last year who scored twice at the NCAA Championships. Canadian Noemie Thomas isn't far out of scoring range heading into her second season either.

2015-2016 Outlook

It's not often a team can lose two swimmers the caliber of Franklin and Runge and still return at the top of the NCAA. But Cal's dominant recruiting efforts are allowing them to reload in a hurry even when big names move away from Berkeley.

In the NCAA, relay points are king, and there shouldn't be any reason Cal will be lacking in that department. The medleys return 7 of 8 legs and should arguably be better in 2016. Even the free relays (which went 1st, 2nd and 1st in the 200, 400 and 800, respectively) still have lots of firepower.

The weak areas in breaststroke, distance free and diving are somewhat worrisome, but Cal's roster is built to absolutely dominate fly, back and sprint free enough that the holes are overshadowed. And the relative talent in those strong events appears enough to keep the Bears among the top teams in the NCAA even after some big points walking out the door last spring.

This weekend will unveil another 2016 data point-LSJU will be competiting in the A&M Invitational. Times won't necessarily matter, but will get a good idea of what their preferred NCAAs relay lineups will be. Will still be extremely strong in the medley relays, but, as good as Neal is, they don't have enough sprint depth to replace Manuel and still hang with the Bears in freestyle relays.

Georgia Invitational is the same time as Winter Nationals. Georgia's relays were weaker than the Bay Area schools last year and they didn't reload on the same level with their current freshmen class.

More than a little confusion about LSJU's schedule. Their website says women at A&M's Invitational this weekend and supported by a press release. A&M website says LSJU men, but not women. Collegeswimming says neither LSJU team will compete @ A&M. LSJU website says men won't be in Texas. WTF?

Furdettes most likely @ A&M. Will have a much easier relay qualifying path than the Bears, who won't compete in a taper meet with formal relays before PAC-12s.

You can time trial a relay at Pac-12s right? Still kinda sounds scary.

Looks really dodgy. Ideally Bears could do an 800 Free LCM time trial on Wednesday night since that simulates NCAAs. Doesn't look possible/feasible, so may have to do between sessions. A single relay A cut gets all five relays invited, but Bears may have subpar relay seeds going into PAC-12s.

Given Marina's SCY troubles, qualifying the 400 Medley Relay in LCM wouldn't be terrible, but may have to juggle individual events if swimmers are going to be doing mid-day relay time trials. No limits on time trial relays, so conceivably McL and Baker could swim five relay time trials since both are almost certainly already in NCAAs via high B times last week. A cut doesn't buy them much additionally and they can go for seeds at PAC-12s.

Probably missing something, but does seem like an undue burden to qualify relays this season. Bears won't win NCAAs solely based on relays, but I'd put the over/under at three relay titles with an outside shot at sweeping all five. Need decent seeds to make that happen. PAC-12 relay time trials should be a last resort only if there are relay DQs. Mix and matching SCY and LCM times would be ideal, but may not be feasible.

That's true - unlike individual events where there's a quota for the number of invitees, all it really needs is an A cut to be achieved in a single relay, then all the other 4 are in as long as they also meet the provisional or B cut.

Here are some current top times - no need to panic yet as Bears haven't really put together their "A team" when it comes to racing relays at dual meets, and the usual provisio re unsuited, unshaved, unrested & untapered when it comes to these times thus far.

Oh well, if I was Teri, I might be tempted to rest some of our swimmers for the big Stanfurd dual on the Farm (13 Feb) to make an A cut in one of the relays then haha, instead of relying on a last-minute effort @ Pac-12s 11 days later (not really advisable in the longer scheme of things I suppose, but a fun thought nonetheless :p)

Thanks, UAC. Hadn't seen the Austin Meet earlier. Seems a little weird to be swimming LCM in January. Totally understand mixing in LCM first semester for Olympic hopefuls, but thought January to March focus would be entirely SCYs.

Could be way off with this spot of wild speculation lol, but perhaps it's Teri's way of acknowledging that she's currently coaching more serious Olympic contenders in her team than most other NCAA Div 1 schools, esp the Dream Team freshies 3/4 of whom had competed and performed well @ 2015 Worlds for Team USA (Katie, Kathleen & Abbey)?

Perhaps this LCM focus had also helped the likes of McL, Noemie & Marina to feel reassured and confident that they will be well prepared for their respective Olympic trials, and so didn't see the need to defer or blueshirt for the 2015-2016 season... Didn't mention Farida here since she's likely already a shoo-in for Egypt even if she's not 100% at her trials.

Competing at a long course meet soon after some solid training during the winter break isn't that bad of a thing really, as Bears will go straight back to racing SCY 5 days after in the form of the Zona dual, so a good test of how they will hold up. LCM racing is also much less detrimental to SCY performance than the other way round, imo.

Actual qualification times in both LCM & SCM for 2016 NCAAs have now been published, in addition to the regular SCY standards (see SwimSwam article below).

At a glance, 'A' standards appear rather intimidating if one was planning to earn an automatic berth via long course rather than the typical short course yards format. An NCAA 'A' cut this season in LCM would be equivalent to a time that would have placed in the Top 3 at 2012 Olympic Trials!

Of course a single A cut would get the swimmer into all her other races at National Champs - as long as she has met the 'B' standard in those events, which is relatively attainable even in LCM.

BD you're correct as usual

Furdettes did race the 1st night of the 2015 Art Adamson Invite @ Texas A&M Natatorium.

Both their relays hit the A standard with their wins:
200 Free Relay (Hu, Neal, Ama, Engel) in 1:28.06 {A cut = 1:29.16}
400 Medley Relay (Howe, Haase, Hu, Neal) in 3:30.53 {A cut = 3:33.89}

Ella Eastin also achieved her A cut in a rather impressive time!
200 IM in 1:54.53 {A cut = 1:55.35}

Janet Hu & Lia Neal had swift swims, but ultimately fell short of snagging an A cut in the 50 free, as did freshies Leah Stevens in the 500 free and Kim Williams in the 200 IM...

Upside for Bears - LSJU's relay times, though pretty strong, thus far haven't been as dominating as at the same point last year (thanks in part to Simone's redshirting, not to mention Maddy Schaefer was still competing at this time a year ago) - comparing their performances from the 2015 edition of Art Adamson to 2014's:

Shape of the NCAA tussle with LSJU now coming into focus. Bears should have a lead after Day 1 thanks to the 800 Free Relay, 200 Free Relay, and better depth in the 200 IM and 50 Free. Eastin-200 IM, Hu-50 Free, and Neal-50 Free are in the NCAA field. Haase, Williams, Stevens, and Brown will make it in, but none are in yet.

Pelton, Li, Baker, and Naze will outscore Eastin, Williams, and Haase in the 200 IM. Farida and Amy over Neal and Hu in the 50 Free. Any points in the 50 from Hull, KV, or McL would be gravy. Stevens may score in the 500, but Brown didn't score last year.

LSJU relays are strong, especially in the 400 Medley. Farida, Amy, McL, Baker are better than Neal, Hu, Howe, Ama in the 200 Free Relay. As tedbear previously noted, LSJU will have a breast problem on their 2017 medley relays. Poppe's 1:01+ split on their B relay is slow even at this point in the season. They'll have to use Eastin on their breast legs next season.

SDSU's medley relays were interesting. Erstwhile Bear Taylor Young swam the breast leg on their C medley relay. Joined on that relay by double Cal and double LSJU legacy Cailey Steffens.

Haase (100 Breast) and Howe (100 Back, 100 Fly) now safely in NCAAs. Engel and Stafford still need to qualify in individual events so they can swim on relays.

Still not sure how/when Bears will qualify relays. Furdettes now have 4 relays with A cuts. Slightly surprised at the A cut in the 800 Free. A relay with an average split of roughly 1:46 makes the A cut. 2015 Bears had 7 swimmers faster than 1:46.

Definitely wouldn't underestimate LSJU's relays in spite of Simone's absence - FWIW, their 1:35.92 200 Medley relay time would have been good for 3rd in the A final @ 2015 NCAAs! (though their 1:35.10 in the B final last year was the swiftest overall) Yup, bit of a head scratcher to us armchair analysts (lol) as to Teri's masterplan with regards to relay qualifications when it comes to :bear:s, unless it's a last-minute deal @ Pac-12s as you had previously alluded to.

Back to Stanfurd - Ella Eastin is such a stud (400 IM winning time of 4:01.04 would have won last season's National Champs by almost a second and a half!), as was recognised and recruited by McKeever & Cunnae. Pity for us that Ella abandoned her former BFFs Katie McL & Kathleen to pledge her allegiance to the dark side

Janet Hu's finally showing us a glimpse of the considerable promise surrounding her back in her HS career, with Ally Howe also putting up some nice times. However, Furdette Dream Team 2014 as whole still hasn't quite performed as advertised to this point into their Soph year. Lindsey Engel with some ground to make up vis her potential, and Heidi Poppe noticeably faltering (100 breast: Heidi won the Bonus or C final with her 1:02.23, compared to Sarah Haase's 58.27 'A' cut in the Championship final, with Taylor Young placing 2nd with a 1:01.41 in the Consol final)...

Eastin clearly is a stud. Was initially dubious about her relay fit at either Bay Area school, but much clearer now. Much needed on LSJU's 800 Free now and breast legs on both medley relays in 2017. Wouldn't have been on the 800 Free for the 2016 Bears, but might have been in the mix for the medley breast legs even this year. Can use her in the 200 Fly this season to break up Bear runaway scoring there since Haase is the defending champ in the 100 Breast and Bears don't have a credible scoring threat there.

Hu and Howe are coming on and LSJU has to choose whether to use them in back or fly to slow down the Bears. Don't have enough depth, so they have to pick which events where they make a stand. Bears will win or lose the title in the 200 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Back, and 200 Fly. Mau really needs to contribute in both flys.

BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looking back at recent schedules, Bears always have four major meets: mid-Fall invitational, late Fall semi taper invitational, PAC-12s, and NCAAs. Austin Invitational in January is a new twist. Bears will only have two major SCY meets (NCAAs, PAC-12s).

Teri has 8 potential Olympians: Bootsma, Pelton, Farida, Marina, Noemie, McL, Baker, and Amy. Farida and Marina have already made their 2016 Olympic teams. The rest still need to qualify via national trials. Having the team race three major LCM meets against pros is good prep and will provide in season benchmarks, but isn't ideal for PAC-12s or NCAAs.

Still bullish on 2016 NCAA title chances, but PAC-12s looks more iffy. Team will use SCY time trials in Federal Way for potential individual A cuts, but may still be swimming blind in relays at PAC-12s. May have to go all out in morning relay prelims and may hurt their individual event times. Getting relay A cuts or top seeds won't be a big deal, and they may have three shots (PAC-12 prelims, PAC-12 Finals, and post PAC-12 time trials. 800 Free is the most problematic since it's a one shot time trial the night before full competition starts. Blue and gold lining is Bears will swim with maximum rest in the 800 Free.

Again, not writing off an NCAA title repeat, but do think LCM invitationals may be more important to the core of the team than duals or even PAC-12s this season.
