Recent comments on SwimSwam's Top 20 recruits for 2019 article indicate that, unfortunately for Bears, Regan's homeschooling may not present the admissions obstacle to farming that we had all hoped for, since exceptions to the Furd's strict academics policies (incl. re homeschooling & online classes) are apparently dispensed in the cases of extraordinarily talented student-athletes, which Smith certainly more than qualifies for as a Budapest 2017 finalist for Team USA:

Someone surely knows the details better than me, but every year, Stanford athletics gets a certain number of "trump cards" to push through admissions (though, I think even in these cases, there's an expectation that they won't reach too far for students who will flunk out anyway). That's across all sports, not just swimming, seem to remember it being 5 or 6. World Championship team member would seem to fall into that territory, if you ask me.

Well, not the end of the world if Regan doesn't end up sporting the blue & gold, as Katharine Berkoff is presently still in play (fingers crossed), with Alex Walsh waiting in the wings...

Come to think of it, the HS class of 2020 is pretty loaded with a wealth of backstroke talent (flyers in the class aren't too shabby either lol), so there will be options aplenty for Backstroke U. in the wake of Thleen, Billy, Keeks, Coco & Aislinn's graduations (not to mention Sophie's potential development by then).

Here are the current personal bests of several backstroke prospects for 2020 (may have missed some other frontrunners)...note than several of these elites own really swift records in a variety of events in addition to their killer backstrokes!

Have included 2019's KB3 for comparison here, as #3 Katharine's the best backstroker in her class, with a particularly impressive 200 Back time...and more importantly, a wicked progression curve:

Cheers for the heads up! Was aware of SS' plans to publish this week, but have to agree, these bleeding early rankings (a reflection of the rapidly shifting recruiting landscape) will surely undergo some significant changes in a season's time!

I'm also out & abouts, but look forward to a forthcoming thread dedicated to the 2020 class!

Oh, believe SwimSwam had a hard time deciding on #1 & #2! (2 super recruits that we've been so favourably disposed towards for the longest time ) Perhaps Regan having the top time in 6 events v. Alex's 4 was a deciding factor, esp with 3 of Regan's category best being in freestyle??

This is an unbelievable recruiting class. It's easily the best class we've ranked since the stellar 2015 crew that included Katie Ledecky, Abbey Weitzeil, Kathleen Baker, Katie McLaughlin, Amy Bilquist, Ella Eastin and Lilly King. And outside of Ledecky and Weitzeil, the times from the Class of 2020 are pretty much across the board faster as sophomores than that class's were as juniors.

The big question will be what to do at #1, where we've got two swimmers who would have been the consensus #1 in our last four recruiting classes. It's the age old question of what's more valuable: a 1:48.3 backstroker or a 2:06.4 breaststroker? How about a 50.8 backstroker or a 58.1 breaststroker? Or a 1:53.5 flyer or a 1:54.0 IMer?

The answer, of course, is "yes." There really isn't a wrong way to rank these two, and any team would be thrilled with either of them. It'll be interesting to see if our pick changes when we revisit these rankings down the road.

Not too early to get a verbal. Look at sport of softball. They are making verbals as early as HS freshmen. Of course, not worth anything until they sign on the dotted line.

CAL ADDS 4TH VERBAL TO WOMEN'S CLASS OF 2023 WITH ASHLYN FIORILLI

Ashlyn Fiorilli of Texas Ford Aquatics and Spring Creek Academy has verbally committed to the Cal Berkeley class of 2023. She joins an incoming class consisting of Rachel Klinker, Chloe Clark, and Isabel Ivey.

Fiorilli was a C finalist in the 200 LCM butterfly at the 2017 US Summer Nationals, where she placed 18th. She also suited up for Team USA at the 2017 World Junior Championships, where she placed 12th in the 200 fly.

• 100 fly 54.71
• 200 fly 1:57.23
• 200 IM 2:02.88
• 400 IM 4:15.41
• 500 free 4:49.92

Fiorilli's best events are the 200 fly, 1650 free, and the 400 IM. Her mile is intriguing for Cal she would've been 2nd on their 2017-18 top times list behind Chenoa Devine (16:16.20), but Devine was the only Cal swimmer to race a mile on their entire roster last year, according to the top times list. Meanwhile, she would've been 4th on the list last season in the 200 fly and 400 IM.

At the 2018 Pac 12 Championships, with her best times, Fiorilli would've placed 12th in the mile and B-finaled in both the 200 fly and 400 IM.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American Sarah DiMeco has announced via social media that she verbally committed to swim for Cal beginning in the 2019-20 season. DiMeco, an Honorable Mention on our list of top-20 recruits from the high school class of 2019, will join four other verbal commits in the fall of 2019: Ashlyn Fiorilli, Chloe Clark, Isabel Ivey, and Rachel Klinker.

DiMeco swims for Issaquah Swim Team and Skyline High School in Sammamish, Washington. As a sophomore she led Skyline to a Washington 4A State Championship with two individual wins (200 free, 1:49.37; 500 free, 4:51.00) and an anchor (51.91) that gave the Spartans the win necessary to claim their second consecutive team title. This past fall, in her junior season, DiMeco repeated her 500 free title. (Had she not been DQd for a false start in the 200 free, she would have placed second by .01.)

Her best events, though, are not swum in high school. DiMeco excels in the 1650 free, in addition to the 200/500 duo, as well as the 400 IM and 200 fly. She was runner-up in the 500 free at Winter Juniors West, going her best time by nearly 5 seconds. This spring she had an excellent meet at Federal Way Sectionals, earning new PBs in the mile (1st place), 100 fly (7th place), 200 fly (2nd place), and 400 IM (2nd place). She also won the 500 free and placed 6th in the 200 free.

Dimeco's 1650 time would have scored 9th at 2018 Pac-12 Championships; she would have been the second Golden Bear after Chenoa Devine. She also would have scored in the B finals of the 500 free and 200 fly, and the C final of the 400 IM (she would have missed the 200 free C final by .01).

Hmm - looks like Regenauer has dropped about a tenth on her 50 free at NCSAs, and 0.01 off her 100, 2 seconds off her 200, and about 0.4 off her 100 fly. Looks promising, though I think the five schools she's considering are Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Stanford, and Virginia.

Much too early really to be attempting this seriously lol...but in the relative lull of finals week, thought it might be fun to take a preliminary if rather haphazard guess at some potential event schedules for our quintet of Baby Bears.

Have most likely missed out on stronger or more suitable team-dependent events for several of our commits, so would bear-y much welcome all your corrections and take on this, cheers!

The picture will probably look quite different in a year's time, after these current HS juniors have had a chance to progress further in their pet events, or perhaps will develop in an altogether different direction - for example, in-state Chloe hasn't even raced her 2018 yards taper meet, since CIF sectionals & the state championship are scheduled to be contested in the next couple of weeks.

Not to mention having more complete data in hand to assess the team's areas of strength, depth, weakness & needs by the time the 2019 class arrives @ Cal (esp after our incoming 2018 freshies show everyone what they can do @ 2019 Pac-12s & NCAAs).

In addition, @ 2018 Pac12s, Ivey's PB would have been good for 3rd in the A final of the 100 Free (behind only Manuel & Abbey), and 3rd in the 200 Free (behind Ledecky & Manuel, identical time as Robin's)

Blueseventy Swim the the Week: Spitz Upping Recruit Standing With 1:45



It was just 11 days ago that we released our annual NCAA recruiting class rankings for the current crop of juniors. We ranked Newport Harbor's Ayla Spitz 20th.

11 days later, she made that rank irrelevant.

A 49.2/1:46.4 freestyler when we ranked her 20th, Spitz was more notable for a 1:58 IM and a 53.4 backstroke. But at the CIF Sunset League Championships, Spitz blasted a 1:45.44 in the 200 free to pair with a 48.88 in the 100 free, which should launch her well above 20th in the current recruiting landscape.

Comparing to the rest of the high school Class of 2019, Spitz's free times alone now put her in line with #7 Alexandra Crisera (22.4/48.8/1:47.0) and #10 Kelly Pash (22.7/48.5/1:45.2), though she doesn't yet have the 50 (23.19) to match them. (And, of course, the rankings do still take into account versatility, other time drops and relay value, which is why Crisera and Pash's 50s weigh so heavily).

If Spitz is continuing her high school season into California's section and state meets, she could lower those times further, or swap events and look to better her solid IM and backstroke times. Either way, Spitz is on the rise at just the right time to climb up the recruiting lists of NCAA coaches.

Amen. Props to Billy for forwarding this around. Guessing that Carmel, IN is nothing like Berkeley, CA, but she clearly values the whole Cal package (pool, classroom, community). Have spent time on campus at all of the credible academic/swim powers, and Cal offers the best overall experience for young adults looking to be challenged. It's definitely not for everyone, which is why I don't stress over teenage recruits who seek more conventional/less challenging environments.

WATCH: TEA LAUGHLIN RIPS 52.80 100 BACK AT CIF-SS PRELIMS

Ventura High School sophomore Tea Laughlin had a very impressive swim in the prelims of the 100 back on Thursday at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Championships, posting the top time in 52.80. The time was a lifetime best, lowering her previous mark of 53.14 from a year ago, and she'll head into Saturday's final looking to improve upon her runner-up finish in 2017. She leads the field by 1.45 seconds, with Huntington Beach freshman Madelyn Harris sitting 2nd in 54.25.

Preliminaries for the 2018 CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Championships went off on Friday in Riverside, with finals slated for Saturday morning beginning at 11 am. The Division 1 Championships, taking place in the same complex, had their prelims on Thursday with their finals set for Saturday afternoon.

Highlighting the session was Mira Costa junior Alexandra Crisera, who smashed a pair of Division 2 meet records in the 50 free and 100 back.

Leading off her school's 200 free relay, Crisera split 22.59, getting under Crean Lutheran senior Elise Garcia's meet record of 22.66. Crisera's leg led her team to the 2nd seed in 1:36.44, closely following Los Osos (1:36.38), who had a 23.23 lead-off from Emily Trieu and a 23.16 anchor from Casslyn Treydte.

Towards the end of the session Crisera dominated the field in the 100 back, putting up a time of 52.87 to break Eva Merrell's 2017 meet record of 53.12. Trieu took the 2nd seed in 53.84, as Crisera's time was less than a tenth off the top qualifying in Div 1 (52.80 by Tea Laughlin).

Crisera, who didn't even swim the 50 free individually, also took the top seed in the 100 free, going 49.13. She holds the meet record at 48.87. Her first swim of the session was on Mira Costa's 200 medley relay, as she anchored them in 22.39 to propel them into the final in 9th.

Cooper is the best 200 flyer in the class, but doesn't have a lot of complementary speed in other events. Her 200 is only seven tenths out of NCAA scoring range, though, and she's on a rocketship of improvement: Her 200 dropped from 2:01.8 in 2016 to 1:58.9 in 2017 to 1:56.0 already in 2018, and she's dropped more than a second in her 100 at the same time. That insane improvement curve bumps her up a bit in our rankings, especially when we've seen diamond-in-the-rough flyers like Kelsi Worrell and Sarah Gibson excel in recent years.

WHAT 5 THINGS COLLEGE COACHES ARE LOOKING FOR MOST?


1) Be a good teammate

When building a team culture and when building the buy in college coaches need to know that the person they are recruiting will be a good teammate and that they will ultimately bring value to the team they are joining.

Coaches want to see you being involved and assisting in all facets of day-to-day training and competing.

This involves assisting with recruits during their visits, helping with equipment (putting it away, taking lane lines in and out, etc). Coaches like to see swimmer's encouraging their teammates at meets and at practices.

Being on time, respectful, and speaking highly of the institution on social media and to others is also critical for most college coaches.


2) Be coachable

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" Tim Notke

You could be the most talented age group swimmer in the world but coaches want to see that you are coachable. They want to see that you are able to buy into their program and the values they instill in the program.


3) Good Academics

There is an understanding that most high-level students work ethic outside of the pool transfers to in the pool


4) Swimming times and potential

(Duh )


5) Character

College coaches are looking for athletes that will positively represent their team and the university every day of the week.

Coaches have been known to monitor social media of their recruits to see the way in which they act.

Luca Urlando, Chloe Clark Double Section Record Setters at CIF SAC-Joaquin Meet

Granite Bay's Chloe Clark broke two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:58.29, lowering her own Section record set last year. She also won the 100 back with a 53.21, .02 faster than her own Section record.

CLARK, URLANDO LEAD RECORD CHARGE AT CIF SAC-JOAQUIN

Chloe Clark of Granite Bay and Luca Urlando of C.K. McClatchey broke two records apiece at the 2018 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, as they were among the five swimmers who claimed two individual wins each.

Nearly half of the events for girls saw a new Section Record, with five falling by the wayside. Clark started off the meet by breaking her own 200 IM mark of 1:59.51, set last year, in 1:58.29 with a blistering 28.73 backstroke leg. Kristina Murphy of Christian Brothers was the runner-up in a respectable 2:01.67.

Clark would then break her own record again in the 100 back, lowering her 53.23 from 2016 by .02 in 53.21 for the win over Davis' Zoe Cosgrove (54.35). Cosgrove was the victor in the 500 free, being the only one to crack 5 minutes in 4:55.37.
