Also, is Regan -> Furd automatically assumed at this point, or are we purely basing it off of social media? Since the NCAA came out with new recruiting rules earlier this week, what are the chances of her being on Cal campus as early as this fall?
Ooooh would be eva soo bear-y luvly if both Alex Walsh & Regan Smith were to join 2019 commits Izzy, Chloe & Rachel on the sidelines @ Memorial Stadium this coming Sept on an official visit!!! KB3 aka Katharine Berkoff would be very welcome too...

Furdettes may be feverishly working overtime to convert Regan to the Dark Side (Zoe, Lucie, Anya, Amalie, DRoy & JLeVant, but I'm clinging to my personal belief/hopes that she may yet see the light haha.

Recent comments on SwimSwam's Top 20 recruits for 2019 article indicate that, unfortunately for Bears, Regan's homeschooling may not present the admissions obstacle to farming that we had all hoped for, since exceptions to the Furd's strict academics policies (incl. re homeschooling & online classes) are apparently dispensed in the cases of extraordinarily talented student-athletes, which Smith certainly more than qualifies for as a Budapest 2017 finalist for Team USA:

Regan's taking online classes, and from what I've heard, homeschooled student-athletes are traditionally frowned upon, which was the case with Eva Merrell and Kathleen Baker in the years past. Unless Meehan can pull some strings with the AO (which hasn't seen any success), doubt Regan's a tree for the time being
Someone surely knows the details better than me, but every year, Stanford athletics gets a certain number of "trump cards" to push through admissions (though, I think even in these cases, there's an expectation that they won't reach too far for students who will flunk out anyway). That's across all sports, not just swimming, seem to remember it being 5 or 6. World Championship team member would seem to fall into that territory, if you ask me.

  • UPDATE => seems there's a potential ray of sunshine here:
SWIMCOACHDAD said:

I was talking to a Stanford assistant at a meet a year or so ago and was told Stanford admin was holding athletic recruits more closely to "regular" Stanford admissions standards. It sounded like a policy change toward being more strict about the academic standing of incoming athletes, the way it was said.

------

Well, not the end of the world if Regan doesn't end up sporting the blue & gold, as Katharine Berkoff is presently still in play (fingers crossed), with Alex Walsh waiting in the wings...

Come to think of it, the HS class of 2020 is pretty loaded with a wealth of backstroke talent (flyers in the class aren't too shabby either lol), so there will be options aplenty for Backstroke U. in the wake of Thleen, Billy, Keeks, Coco & Aislinn's graduations (not to mention Sophie's potential development by then).

Here are the current personal bests of several backstroke prospects for 2020 (may have missed some other frontrunners)...note than several of these elites own really swift records in a variety of events in addition to their killer backstrokes!

Have included 2019's KB3 for comparison here, as #3 Katharine's the best backstroker in her class, with a particularly impressive 200 Back time...and more importantly, a wicked progression curve:

  • *** = Current Bear graduating when the 2020 recruits class comes in...

50 Back (200 Medley Relay value)

24.17 - #1 Alex Walsh (Dec 06, 2017)

53.95 - ***Courtney Mykkanen (May 09, 2013)

200 Back (2018 NCAA finals qualifying time = 1:52.18)
=======
1:48.30 - #2 Regan Smith (Mar 22, 2018)
1:51.40 - Katharine Berkoff (Mar 15, 2018)
1:51.42 - #1 Alex Walsh (Dec 09, 2017)
1:52.04 - #5 Isabelle Stadden (Mar 14, 2018)
-----------
1:52.84 - #4 Phoebe Bacon (Mar 14, 2018)
1:53.31 - ***Keaton Blovad (Feb 24, 2018)
1:54.36 - ***Courtney Mykkanen (Feb 21, 2018)
1:56.27 - ***Aislinn Light (Feb 24, 2018)

What I find quite astonishing is that EVERY SINGLE 2020 recruit above would have scored in the backstroke events @ 2018 NCAAs, with times that were achieved in their HS Sophomore year or earlier!!! (lone exceptions being Phoebe & Olivia in the 200 Back)

Here are the currently uncommitted Top 20 recruits from that SS article - all of these names have already been referenced on these pages (or thru PM) as potential targets or prospects...

HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Sarah Dimeco (Issaquah Swim Team / Skyline High School / Sammamish, WA) an excellent mile (16:19) and a good 200/500 free (1:48/4:44), Dimeco is hurt by the NCAA's emphasis on sprinters. Her 200 fly and 400 IM are also very good, and it wouldn't be surprising to see her become the unranked star of this class.

Reckon Sarah will fill a much needed role on the team, patching up several areas of vulnerability. Teri does have a knack for spotting underrated recruits with a lot of upside, so we'll see how Dimeco develops in the blue & gold... Go Bears!

WAY TOO EARLY NCAA RECRUIT RANKS: GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2020

This is way too early for these rankings to be released, IMO.

Gotta run, will be back online later, but any thoughts/comments/opinions on Regan being #1 and Alex being #2?

Cheers for the heads up! Was aware of SS' plans to publish this week, but have to agree, these bleeding early rankings (a reflection of the rapidly shifting recruiting landscape) will surely undergo some significant changes in a season's time!

I'm also out & abouts, but look forward to a forthcoming thread dedicated to the 2020 class!

Oh, believe SwimSwam had a hard time deciding on #1 & #2! (2 super recruits that we've been so favourably disposed towards for the longest time ) Perhaps Regan having the top time in 6 events v. Alex's 4 was a deciding factor, esp with 3 of Regan's category best being in freestyle??

Jared Anderson said:

  • Major controversy for #1

This is an unbelievable recruiting class. It's easily the best class we've ranked since the stellar 2015 crew that included Katie Ledecky, Abbey Weitzeil, Kathleen Baker, Katie McLaughlin, Amy Bilquist, Ella Eastin and Lilly King. And outside of Ledecky and Weitzeil, the times from the Class of 2020 are pretty much across the board faster as sophomores than that class's were as juniors.

The big question will be what to do at #1, where we've got two swimmers who would have been the consensus #1 in our last four recruiting classes. It's the age old question of what's more valuable: a 1:48.3 backstroker or a 2:06.4 breaststroker? How about a 50.8 backstroker or a 58.1 breaststroker? Or a 1:53.5 flyer or a 1:54.0 IMer?

The answer, of course, is "yes." There really isn't a wrong way to rank these two, and any team would be thrilled with either of them. It'll be interesting to see if our pick changes when we revisit these rankings down the road.

It's a true 1A and 1B situation

Not too early to get a verbal. Look at sport of softball. They are making verbals as early as HS freshmen. Of course, not worth anything until they sign on the dotted line.

On top of this, now that HS juniors can take official visits starting 1 Sept, there could conceivably be a flood of verbal commitments from the 2020 class as soon as this autumn...Alex Walsh, Regan Smith, Phoebe Bacon, Isabelle Stadden, Olivia Bray, Lillie Nordmann, Ella Ristic are some names which spring prominently to mind!

Lest Bears stoop to smug complacency, a number of schools (yes, I'm looking at you - DeSorbo, Bowman, Holloway...amongst others ) have already seized the opportunity to take advantage of these sweeping changes, making early VERBAL offers that most likely have hard deadlines attached to them (note though that WRITTEN offers are still not permitted by the NCAA until starting 1 Aug of a recruit's senior year).

Associated recruiting strategies include launching a series of very visible social media campaigns which can be interpreted as aiming to undercut the traditional flow of recruits to programmes like Cal, LSJU etc., by encouraging & enticing these top targets to initiate communications and commit really early (under the guise of being helpful to recruits in their decision-making by simply explaining the new rules)...

Guess the owner of American College Connection had something to say on this subject (commented on SwimSwam as below):
RICK PAINE said:

Great idea Jared. Unfortunately this needs to be done. With the new NCAA recruiting rules going into effect we are finding some coaches who are suggesting to recruits there may not be as many official visits offer to seniors because the coaches are bringing in juniors. Your list doesn't even include the international swimmers that want to come to the states. I know that is virtually impossible to know about them. Keep up the great work.

CAL ADDS 4TH VERBAL TO WOMEN'S CLASS OF 2023 WITH ASHLYN FIORILLI

Ashlyn Fiorilli of Texas Ford Aquatics and Spring Creek Academy has verbally committed to the Cal Berkeley class of 2023. She joins an incoming class consisting of Rachel Klinker, Chloe Clark, and Isabel Ivey.

Fiorilli was a C finalist in the 200 LCM butterfly at the 2017 US Summer Nationals, where she placed 18th. She also suited up for Team USA at the 2017 World Junior Championships, where she placed 12th in the 200 fly.

TOP TIMES (SCY)
  • 100 fly 54.71
  • 200 fly 1:57.23
  • 200 IM 2:02.88
  • 400 IM 4:15.41
  • 500 free 4:49.92
  • 1650 free 16:23.48
  • 200 back 1:58.08
  • 200 fly (LCM) 2:12.19
Fiorilli's best events are the 200 fly, 1650 free, and the 400 IM. Her mile is intriguing for Cal she would've been 2nd on their 2017-18 top times list behind Chenoa Devine (16:16.20), but Devine was the only Cal swimmer to race a mile on their entire roster last year, according to the top times list. Meanwhile, she would've been 4th on the list last season in the 200 fly and 400 IM.

At the 2018 Pac 12 Championships, with her best times, Fiorilli would've placed 12th in the mile and B-finaled in both the 200 fly and 400 IM.

Now reported by SwimSwam (finally, after a spot of prompting in the comments section of their writeup on Ashlyn's verbal lol):

-------

CAL BEARS SECURE VERBAL COMMITMENT FROM DISTANCE SPECIALIST SARAH DIMECO

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American Sarah DiMeco has announced via social media that she verbally committed to swim for Cal beginning in the 2019-20 season. DiMeco, an Honorable Mention on our list of top-20 recruits from the high school class of 2019, will join four other verbal commits in the fall of 2019: Ashlyn Fiorilli, Chloe Clark, Isabel Ivey, and Rachel Klinker.

"I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of California Berkeley class of 2023. Thank you to all who supported me! GO BEARS"

DiMeco swims for Issaquah Swim Team and Skyline High School in Sammamish, Washington. As a sophomore she led Skyline to a Washington 4A State Championship with two individual wins (200 free, 1:49.37; 500 free, 4:51.00) and an anchor (51.91) that gave the Spartans the win necessary to claim their second consecutive team title. This past fall, in her junior season, DiMeco repeated her 500 free title. (Had she not been DQd for a false start in the 200 free, she would have placed second by .01.)

Her best events, though, are not swum in high school. DiMeco excels in the 1650 free, in addition to the 200/500 duo, as well as the 400 IM and 200 fly. She was runner-up in the 500 free at Winter Juniors West, going her best time by nearly 5 seconds. This spring she had an excellent meet at Federal Way Sectionals, earning new PBs in the mile (1st place), 100 fly (7th place), 200 fly (2nd place), and 400 IM (2nd place). She also won the 500 free and placed 6th in the 200 free.

Dimeco's 1650 time would have scored 9th at 2018 Pac-12 Championships; she would have been the second Golden Bear after Chenoa Devine. She also would have scored in the B finals of the 500 free and 200 fly, and the C final of the 400 IM (she would have missed the 200 free C final by .01).

Top SCY times:
  • 1650 free 16:19.78
  • 1000 free 9:46.65
  • 500 free 4:44.26
  • 200 free 1:48.35
  • 400 IM 4:15.83
  • 200 fly 1:57.84
  • 100 fly 54.17

Another sprinter (22.76/49.36/1:49.12) with a decent 100 fly (54.60)
Hmm - looks like Regenauer has dropped about a tenth on her 50 free at NCSAs, and 0.01 off her 100, 2 seconds off her 200, and about 0.4 off her 100 fly. Looks promising, though I think the five schools she's considering are Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Stanford, and Virginia.

Much too early really to be attempting this seriously lol...but in the relative lull of finals week, thought it might be fun to take a preliminary if rather haphazard guess at some potential event schedules for our quintet of Baby Bears.

Have most likely missed out on stronger or more suitable team-dependent events for several of our commits, so would bear-y much welcome all your corrections and take on this, cheers!

The picture will probably look quite different in a year's time, after these current HS juniors have had a chance to progress further in their pet events, or perhaps will develop in an altogether different direction - for example, in-state Chloe hasn't even raced her 2018 yards taper meet, since CIF sectionals & the state championship are scheduled to be contested in the next couple of weeks.

Not to mention having more complete data in hand to assess the team's areas of strength, depth, weakness & needs by the time the 2019 class arrives @ Cal (esp after our incoming 2018 freshies show everyone what they can do @ 2019 Pac-12s & NCAAs).

-------

Izzie's the only commit in the class with personal bests that would have qualified for finals out of prelims @ 2018 NCAAs, i.e. immediate scoring impact. In addition, @ 2018 Pac12s, Ivey's PB would have been good for 3rd in the A final of the 100 Free (behind only Manuel & Abbey), and 3rd in the 200 Free (behind Ledecky & Manuel, identical time as Robin's)

  • Isabel Ivey - 200 IM | 200 Free | 100 Free
Day 2 | 200 IM (1:55.77 -> 2018 NCAA B Final)
Day 3 | 200 Free (1:43.64 -> NCAA A Final)
Day 4 | 100 Free (47.88 -> NCAA B Final)

Impressive versatility too! Here are Izzy's hypothetical rankings out of prelims @ 2018 NCAAs in her other events...may not have made the invite cutoff line in these events (100 Back being an exception)...but a moot point since Ivey would have been eligible to enter any of these events anyway (qualified via the invites in her primary events + B cut in her off events here):
- 100 Back: 2018 NCAA prelims placing: #19 (52.27)
- 50 Free: #26 (22.43)
- 100 Fly: #27 (52.61)
- 200 Fly: #27 (1:56.48)
- 400 IM: #30 (4:12.08)
- 200 Breast: #38 (2:11.56)
- 100 Breast: #41 (1:00.99)

-------

The rest of our 2019 Baby Bears may not qualify for an NCAA invite yet with their current best times, and don't project as immediate relay value with their skill sets (Chloe being a qualified exception perhaps).

But with some progression in the next year & a half, they could realistically achieve, or come quite close to, a 2020 NCAA invite in a number of events, and will definitely contribute @ the Conference Championships + dual meets in their frosh debut!
Sarah: #39 @ 1650 Free & #49 @ 400 IM
Ashlyn: #41 @ 200 Fly
Chloe: #48 @ 200 IM
Rachel: #56 @ 200 Free
... where #37 is the nominal NCAA cutoff line for invites.

-------

  • Chloe Clark - 200 IM | 100 Back | 200 Back
Day 2 | 200 IM (1:57.32 -> 2018 Pac12 B Final)
Day 3 | 100 Back (53.46 -> Pac12 B Final)
Day 4 | 200 Back (1:56.79 -> Pac12 B Final)

Chloe has quite a bit of versatily, so there's always a chance that she'd be called upon to race the 400 IM (4:13.94 -> Pac12 B Final) or even 100 Breast (1:02.68 -> Pac12 C Final) instead of the 100 Back, if that's what the team needs at that moment ... or, less likely, the 50 Free (23.07 -> Pac12 C Final) in lieu of the 200 IM ... Clark's 100 Free (49.27 -> Pac12 B Final) also a viable alternative to her 200 Back.

-------

  • Sarah DiMeco - 500 Free | 400 IM | 1650 Free
Day 2 | 500 Free (4:44.26 -> Pac12 B Final)
Day 3 | 400 IM (4:15.83 -> Pac12 B Final)
Day 4 | 1650 Free (16:19.78 -> Pac12 Timed Final, #9)

Sarah's 200 Fly (1:57.84 -> Pac12 B Final) is quite solid too, but as mentioned earlier, she'd likely be more valuable to the team in the mile (1650 Free).

-------

Rachel Klinker - 500 Free | 200 Free | 1650 Free (or 200 Fly?)
Day 2 | 500 Free (4:46.73 -> Pac12 C Final)
Day 3 | 200 Free (1:46.05 -> Pac12 B Final)
Day 4 | 1650 Free (16:33.92 -> Pac12 Timed Final, #16)

Rachel could take on the 200 Fly (1:57.92 -> Pac12 B Final), but reckon that her mile would be more valuable to Bears since Ashlyn & Sarah do currently have a faster 200 Fly time (tho Sarah's best event that day is the mile). Rachel probably with more team value in her 200 Free than the 100 Fly (54.18 -> Pac12 C Final).

-------

  • Ashlyn Fiorilli -> 500 Free | 100 Fly | 200 Fly
Day 2 | 500 Free (4:49.92-> Pac12, #29)
Day 3 | 100 Fly (54.71-> Pac12 C Final)
Day 4 | 200 Fly (1:57.23-> Pac12 B Final)

-------

One non-trivial thing to note here: looking beyond the little pool of collegiate competition, our 2019 Baby Bears also have very credible credentials in long course swimming, as befitting the rich Olympic history of Cal's swimming programmes

Blueseventy Swim the the Week: Spitz Upping Recruit Standing With 1:45

It was just 11 days ago that we released our annual NCAA recruiting class rankings for the current crop of juniors. We ranked Newport Harbor's Ayla Spitz 20th.

11 days later, she made that rank irrelevant.

A 49.2/1:46.4 freestyler when we ranked her 20th, Spitz was more notable for a 1:58 IM and a 53.4 backstroke. But at the CIF Sunset League Championships, Spitz blasted a 1:45.44 in the 200 free to pair with a 48.88 in the 100 free, which should launch her well above 20th in the current recruiting landscape.

Comparing to the rest of the high school Class of 2019, Spitz's free times alone now put her in line with #7 Alexandra Crisera (22.4/48.8/1:47.0) and #10 Kelly Pash (22.7/48.5/1:45.2), though she doesn't yet have the 50 (23.19) to match them. (And, of course, the rankings do still take into account versatility, other time drops and relay value, which is why Crisera and Pash's 50s weigh so heavily).

If Spitz is continuing her high school season into California's section and state meets, she could lower those times further, or swap events and look to better her solid IM and backstroke times. Either way, Spitz is on the rise at just the right time to climb up the recruiting lists of NCAA coaches.

Amen. Props to Billy for forwarding this around. Guessing that Carmel, IN is nothing like Berkeley, CA, but she clearly values the whole Cal package (pool, classroom, community). Have spent time on campus at all of the credible academic/swim powers, and Cal offers the best overall experience for young adults looking to be challenged. It's definitely not for everyone, which is why I don't stress over teenage recruits who seek more conventional/less challenging environments.

The time was a lifetime best, lowering her previous mark of 53.14 from a year ago, and she'll head into Saturday's final looking to improve upon her runner-up finish in 2017. She leads the field by 1.45 seconds, with Huntington Beach freshman Madelyn Harris sitting 2nd in 54.25.

ALEXANDRA CRISERA SETS PAIR OF MEET RECORDS AT CIF-SS DIV 2 PRELIMS

Preliminaries for the 2018 CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Championships went off on Friday in Riverside, with finals slated for Saturday morning beginning at 11 am. The Division 1 Championships, taking place in the same complex, had their prelims on Thursday with their finals set for Saturday afternoon.

Highlighting the session was Mira Costa junior Alexandra Crisera, who smashed a pair of Division 2 meet records in the 50 free and 100 back.

Leading off her school's 200 free relay, Crisera split 22.59, getting under Crean Lutheran senior Elise Garcia's meet record of 22.66. Crisera's leg led her team to the 2nd seed in 1:36.44, closely following Los Osos (1:36.38), who had a 23.23 lead-off from Emily Trieu and a 23.16 anchor from Casslyn Treydte.

Towards the end of the session Crisera dominated the field in the 100 back, putting up a time of 52.87 to break Eva Merrell's 2017 meet record of 53.12. Trieu took the 2nd seed in 53.84, as Crisera's time was less than a tenth off the top qualifying in Div 1 (52.80 by Tea Laughlin).

Crisera, who didn't even swim the 50 free individually, also took the top seed in the 100 free, going 49.13. She holds the meet record at 48.87. Her first swim of the session was on Mira Costa's 200 medley relay, as she anchored them in 22.39 to propel them into the final in 9th.

14. Caroline Cooper Highlander Aquatic Club Winter Park High School Orlando, FL
Best Times: 200 fly 1:56.03, 100 fly 53.99

Cooper is the best 200 flyer in the class, but doesn't have a lot of complementary speed in other events. Her 200 is only seven tenths out of NCAA scoring range, though, and she's on a rocketship of improvement: Her 200 dropped from 2:01.8 in 2016 to 1:58.9 in 2017 to 1:56.0 already in 2018, and she's dropped more than a second in her 100 at the same time. That insane improvement curve bumps her up a bit in our rankings, especially when we've seen diamond-in-the-rough flyers like Kelsi Worrell and Sarah Gibson excel in recent years.

Caroline: "I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!! How long do you want to ignore this user?

Recruiting article from one of SwimSwam's partners (4-time Olympian Roland Schoeman and Athletes USA).

Some pretty solid points made, even if there's a bit of self-advertising going on there haha.

Points 3 (academics) & 4 (swim talent & times) are fairly self-evident - indeed they are the main parameters by which we armchair recruiting scouts on the board lol tend to apply when measuring a prospective recruit's potential for joining the swim team & Bears family here... if only cos unlike Teri & Sarah, we don't normally have access to the other equally crucial criteria listed in the writeup, such as character, being a good teammate, coachability, etc. :p

For the full text of the original writeup, please visit the link embedded in the article heading below...

-----

WHAT 5 THINGS COLLEGE COACHES ARE LOOKING FOR MOST?

1) Be a good teammate

When building a team culture and when building the buy in college coaches need to know that the person they are recruiting will be a good teammate and that they will ultimately bring value to the team they are joining.

Coaches want to see you being involved and assisting in all facets of day-to-day training and competing.

This involves assisting with recruits during their visits, helping with equipment (putting it away, taking lane lines in and out, etc). Coaches like to see swimmer's encouraging their teammates at meets and at practices.

Being on time, respectful, and speaking highly of the institution on social media and to others is also critical for most college coaches.

2) Be coachable

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" Tim Notke

You could be the most talented age group swimmer in the world but coaches want to see that you are coachable. They want to see that you are able to buy into their program and the values they instill in the program.

3) Good Academics

There is an understanding that most high-level students work ethic outside of the pool transfers to in the pool

4) Swimming times and potential

(Duh )

5) Character

College coaches are looking for athletes that will positively represent their team and the university every day of the week.

Coaches have been known to monitor social media of their recruits to see the way in which they act.

TOP 20 NCAA SWIMMING RECRUITS IN THE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2019

12. Chloe Clark Sierra Marlins Swim Team Granite Bay High School Granite Bay, CA **Verbally Committed to Cal**

Best Times: 200 IM 1:57.32, 400 IM 4:13.94, 100 back 53.23, 200 back 1:56.79, 50 free 22.65, 100 free 49.27

Clark is a very good IMer and backstroker with enough sprint free talent to round out a full college conference meet lineup. The downside is that most of her best times come from 2016, and she's been a bit off her mark since. Still, she's one of the best IM prospects in this class and a high-upside pickup if a college coach can return her to form.

The picture will probably look quite different in a year's time, after these current HS juniors have had a chance to progress further in their pet events, or perhaps will develop in an altogether different direction - for example, in-state Chloe hasn't even raced her 2018 yards taper meet, since CIF Sections & the State Championship are scheduled to be contested in the next couple of weeks.

Ummm, guess here is Chloe's answer to SwimSwam's criticism from their 2019 recruits ranking article lol (at least re her 50 & 100 Back)...

Luca Urlando, Chloe Clark Double Section Record Setters at CIF SAC-Joaquin Meet

Granite Bay's Chloe Clark broke two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:58.29, lowering her own Section record set last year. She also won the 100 back with a 53.21, .02 faster than her own Section record.

Not mentioned in the above writeup was Chloe's new lifetime best of 25.22 in the 50 Back, leading off
Granite Bay's 200 Medley Relay to claim the team runner-up in finals. Prev PB = 25.43 from the 2016 edition of Sections.

May get another chance to break more records should Chloe elect to compete @ States this weekend

CLARK, URLANDO LEAD RECORD CHARGE AT CIF SAC-JOAQUIN

Chloe Clark set a pair of Section Records at CIF Sac-Joaquin. Archive photo via Sierra Nevada LSC

Chloe Clark of Granite Bay and Luca Urlando of C.K. McClatchey broke two records apiece at the 2018 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, as they were among the five swimmers who claimed two individual wins each.

Nearly half of the events for girls saw a new Section Record, with five falling by the wayside. Clark started off the meet by breaking her own 200 IM mark of 1:59.51, set last year, in 1:58.29 with a blistering 28.73 backstroke leg. Kristina Murphy of Christian Brothers was the runner-up in a respectable 2:01.67.

Clark would then break her own record again in the 100 back, lowering her 53.23 from 2016 by .02 in 53.21 for the win over Davis' Zoe Cosgrove (54.35). Cosgrove was the victor in the 500 free, being the only one to crack 5 minutes in 4:55.37.
