Definitely seeing some very impressive times being thrown down @ the SEC/ACC/B1G conference champs in progress this week! Remains to be seen whether these swift swims will be replicated or perhaps even surpassed come NCAAs with its attendant high pressure environment & intense atmosphere.

Our women's turn will come starting next Wed evening up in Federal Way @ Pac-12s.

The main goal for potential NCAA qualifiers would I reckon involve snagging NCAA cuts and putting down fast times to optimise seeding in March whilst fine tuning some race strategy & relay lineups ...

For the rest of the team, Pac-12s will be a great opportunity to parlay all the hard sweat & labour from training intensively the whole season into all-our efforts to contribute to the team scoring, to finally test the limits of one's capabilities with a wee spot of help from a full taper & rest. Also, just to soak in all the fun & excitement of a conference championship at the conclusion of the season!

Beating the fave furdette juggernaut & trojanette champs from last year's conference would def be sweet if just for bragging rights, not to mention providing a bit of a confidence booster, esp if it comes at the expense of Stanfurd lol ...

The priority for national title contending powerhouses like Cal & LSJU should be striving to save the very best for the big dance though, for when it matters the most (for those with realistic aspirations of qualifying for NCAAs) - whilst trying to race tough & fast @ Pac-12s at the same time. IMO ... YMMV :p

Well, it's that time of the year again, so by request I've created a new topic dedicated to 2018 Pac-12s here.

Much of what I had written a year ago for last season's edition of our conference championship (see above quoted paragraphs) is still relevant today, I think/hope!

Also, some thoughts from earlier this season:
UrsusArctosCalifornicus said:

So, 8 Bears projected to safely make it into NCs - Thleen, Abbey, Billy, Katie, Nono, Madds, Sarah, Keeks.

Would reckon that Ali, Chenoa, Robin, Val have really good chances of boarding the bus or rather plane to Columbus on 14 March as they are currently pretty close, which would bring our swimmer tally up to 13, equalling last season's. Add Phoebe & Briana on the diving side, and that would be quite a decent squad.

Actually would be blinking brill if Sophie (100 back) & Dannie (100 breast, 400 IM) could squeak in as they aren't that far off in the aforementioned events. Probably won't score in their froski year, but the experience would be so great for the pair

Pac-12 Championship holds larger implications for Cal women's swim

The conference showdown kicks off Wednesday, extending across four days and consisting of fierce competition.

While there are nine teams that make up the Pac-12's swim division, there are really only two schools that are contenders for winning the conference title: No. 2 Cal and No. 1 Stanford.

Since 1987, Stanford the reigning Pac-12 Champion has had an illustrious track record in these conference finals, taking home 20 of the 30 titles. Cal has scraped away four trophies of its own, but hasn't been at the top since 2015.

The Cardinal are once again the favorite to win the meet, and are in line to come away with their 21st victory, with the Bears all but certain to hold the second-place slot.

2018 PAC-12 WOMEN'S CHAMPS FAN GUIDE: STANFORD POISED TO DOMINATE

Cal will be locked and loaded with an Abbey Weitzeil who has been looking fantastic this year, and Kathleen Baker has been the fastest swimmer in the conference this year in the 100 back and 200 IM and the second-fastest in the 200 back. The top spot in the 200 back has been Golden Bear Amy Bilquist, and Noemie Thomas has been the second-fastest time in the conference in the 100 fly.

STARS

Cal Katie McLaughlin (junior butterflier/freestyler), Abbey Weitzeil (sophomore sprinter), Maddie Murphy (sophomore sprinter), Noemie Thomas (senior butterflyer), Kathleen Baker (junior IMer/backstroker), Amy Bilquist (junior freestyler/backstroker) Weitzeil looks in fighting form this year, and she's been great on the 200 medley relay all season (doing breaststroke). There are a lot of big names on this roster, as per usual, but freshman Ali Harrison will be counted on to hold her own against the conference's breaststrokers.

SHOWDOWNS

50 FREESTYLE

Two American Olympians showing down in a 50 free sprinting doesn't get much better than that.
Stanford's Simone Manuel will go head-to-head with Cal's Abbey Weitzeil in a thrilling splash and dash. Manuel was out most of the season with an injury, so her 22.13 from the Stanford v. Cal dual meet isn't on par with the 21.44 Weitzeil swam at the Georgia Invitational. Weitzeil has certainly looked good all season, but Manuel proved with her gold medal performances in the 100 free at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 Worlds that she can win when it counts.

Another battle will be between Cal and Stanford Janet Hu v. Amy Bilquist. They have both broken 22 this year, the only swimmers in the conference to have done that this season other than Weitzeil. Don't count out USC freshman Marta Ciesla, either, who has been 22.23 this year and could have more to drop.

100 BACK & 200 BACK

Kathleen Baker has not been incredibly fast this season other than her times from way early in the season at the USA Swimming v. Pac-12 Challenge, she hasn't really thrown down. Amy Bilquist is the leader this year in the 200 back, and ranks 4th in the 100 back, where Baker leads.

Meanwhile, Stanford will contest with Janet Hu and Ally Howe. Howe was the 2nd woman ever under 50 seconds last year in the 100 back, while Hu has upped her 200 back game.

200 IM

If Kathleen Baker is on, her fight with Ella Eastin will be amazing. If she's not, Eastin will probably run away with this. Louise Hansson may just play spoiler here, though.

Besides these top three, the Pac-12 houses an incredible IM group, so look for the slew of Stanford IMers, Cal's Sarah Darcel, UCLA's Emma Schanz, USC's Tatum Wade, Riley Scott, and Maggie Aroesty, ASU's Chloe Isleta and Marlies Ross. the list goes on.

200 MEDLEY RELAY

It's scary to think of what Janet Hu could split on fly (sub-22?), or Weitzeil on the breaststroke leg or on the anchor, if they opt for someone else on the breast leg. Weitzeil seems the obvious choice, and after halfway, Cal will likely be in the lead. It's hard to imagine Noemie Thomas giving up much time (if any) to Hu, but if Weitzeil is on breaststroke, will Bilquist (or Maddie Murphy? Katie McLaughlin anchored their relay at the Georgia Invitational) have much of a chance to hold off Manuel?

SELECTIONS

While it's incredible to see a team put up four or more swimmers in one A final at a conference championships, Stanford will probably do that in MANY events at Pac-12s. The Cal women have a ton of elite talent and considerable depth, but it simply can't match the Cardinal.

USC certainly has enough primo talent to stay in third, though Arizona won't be too far behind them.

    BEARS HEAD TO PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Conference Titles On The Line This Week

The championship season gets underway this week with the Pac-12 Championships set for Wednesday through Saturday in Federal Way, Washington. Prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m. each day, except for Wednesday when only finals will be contested.

All sessions through Saturday afternoon will be streamed live on Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app. In addition, Saturday night's finals will air live on Pac-12 Networks with Rich Burk, Amy Van Dyken and Cynthia Potter calling the action. In addition to women's swimming & diving, conference titles will also be on the line in men's diving.

Cal, ranked second in the final CSCAA regular-season poll, enters the meet leading the conference in nine events - five individual and four relays. Sophomore Abbey Weitzeil tops the charts in both the 50 free (21.44) and 100 free (46.95), while Kathleen Baker is first in the 100 back (50.62) and 200 IM (1:53.24) and Amy Bilquist leads the pack in the 200 back (1:50.58). The Golden Bears also have the conference's fastest times in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay and 200 medley relay.

    18 SWIMS AMONG NCAA'S TOP 16

Cal enters this week's meet with 18 swims - 13 individual and five relays - that rank among the top 16 in the country. Amy Bilquist leads the squad with appearances in four events.

    EYES ON THE NCAA PRIZE

The Bears earned only one Pac-12 event title last February - Kathleen Baker in the 200 back - but they came back three weeks later to win six NCAA crowns, including three by Baker (100 and 200 back, 200 IM), who was named the CSCAA Swimmer of the Year. In addition, since-graduated Farida Osman finished first in the 100 fly, and Cal won the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.

Depth Versus Standouts: Who Wins At Conference Championships?

Would a coach rather have a few top scorers and some that don't final? Or have all scorers, but none in the championship final? The answer is not simple. Some schools favor one factor over the other, but in most cases winning schools are deep. They do not all have powerhouse, superstar rosters. But some boast a pool of talent in a diverse range of events who can all score points. Unlike at college dual meets, conference championship teams with depth benefit.

Conference championships are about making as many finals as possible, regardless of winning any specific event title. The more swimmers, the more points a team earns. With this said, coaches cannot entirely control whether their roster is deep or top heavy. However, maintaining a significant talent pool in all events is critical.

Regardless of swimmers' strengths, teams consistently win with a plethora of talent as opposed to a sprinkling of superstars.

PSYCH SHEETS FOR THE 2018 WOMEN'S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kathleen Baker, who if she's behind Ledecky in terms of collegiate value, isn't by far, also winning 3 events at NCAAs last year, is only entered in her allotted 3: the 200 IM, the 100 back, and the 200 back. Those are the 3 events that she won at NCAAs last year.

Cal's Abbey Weitzeil might be the Golden Bears' best breaststroke option for relays, but individually, she'll stick to just her primary 50-100-200 freestyles.

    2018 WOMEN'S PAC-12S DAY 1 RECAP: CAL SCARES 200 MR NCAA RECORD

The 2018 Pac-12 Women's Championships are set to begin tonight in Federal Way, Washington. We'll also see the men's divers competing this week. Tonight, swimmers will line up to race in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. Divers will compete in the men's 1-meter finals. Read on for live recaps from tonight's session.

    WOMEN'S 200 MEDLEY RELAY:
    1. GOLD: Cal, 1:34.13
    2. SILVER: Stanford, 1:34.72
    3. BRONZE: USC, 1:35.36

Cal came within 3 hundredths of the NCAA Record, with Kathleen Baker leading off in a 23.59 back split. Abbey Weitzeil took on the breast leg in 26.58, handing off to butterflier Noemie Thomas (22.74). Anchoring for the Bears was Amy Bilquist in 21.22. While some swimming fans have speculated about Baker's times this season, this bodes well for the Bears. Baker's 23.59 is just .02 shy of her fastest 50 back ever (a 23.57 from last season's Pac-12s) and .03 faster than she was on the record-breaking relay at 2017 NCAAs.

Interestingly, the Bears now have another prospect for the breaststroke leg at NCAAs. Freshman Ali Harrison really stepped up with a 26.75 on the B relay, meaning they could use her on the breast leg and opt for 50 free American Record holder Weitzeil as the anchor at NCAAs.

    -----

    WOMEN'S 800 FREE RELAY:
    1. GOLD: Cal, 6:52.62
    2. SILVER: Stanford, 6:53.86
    3. BRONZE: USC, 6:56.85

USC's Louise Hansson blasted a 1:41.81 leadoff split to give the Trojans the lead up front, but they fell behind Cal after the 3rd leg. The Bears came out on top again as Robin Neumann (1:43.38 leadoff), Kathleen Baker (1:43.29), Katie McLaughlin (1:43.29), and Amy Bilquist (1:42.66) combined for a victory. Stanford trailed USC by over 2.5 seconds heading into the anchor leg, but Katie Ledecky put up a 1:41.21 to pull Stanford ahead for the silver. The Cardinal opted not to use Simone Manuel here, instead having Katie Drabot (1:45.88) lead off, Ella Eastin (1:42.77) 2nd, and Brooke Forde (1:44.00) 3rd.

Following along with the live results (http://results.teamunify.com/pnws2/) here and cheering on the Bears: a hearty congratulations and hurray for first place in the relay with a fast 1:34.13, just 0.03 off the NCAA record that they set last year at the championship meet (1:34.10 with Kathleen, Abbey, Noemie, Farida).

Splits: 23.59 for Thleen (fastest of field), 26.58 for Abbey, Noemie 22.74, and 21.22 for Amy!

But what I think is also of note/exciting (perhaps not as exciting as a victory for the night, but still a spectacular swim) -- the B relay that would have placed 4th! Sophie K-Z 24.75, freshman Ali with a 26.75 (busting out a 26 split, which looks promising to me!), Katie's 23.17, and Maddie's 21.69.

Perhaps am getting a little too excited with just one event (and one win) under the belt for the Bears, but roll on!

Haha, cheers for all the speedy updates!!!

Brill win, made that much sweeter by Bears breaking the old Pac-12 champ record set by the furdettes @ 2017 Pac-12s !

At no time did our A relay squad look in danger of relinquishing the lead ... Billy did fab in holding off Simone ... and as observed, the B team was studly, with Ali's dipping below 27 sec particularly promising for the future!

Hey keep up all the smashing news & analysis ... tho overcoming LSJU's rather formidable 800 free relay later in the session might be a bit of a tall order, at least for now...

EDIT: Another rather encouraging set of stats from the 200 MR - Thleen (23.59 v. 23.62) & Abbey (26.58 v. 26.67) had busted out faster splits this evening than they had accomplished @ 2017 NCAAs, presumably neither are fully tapered for conference. Amy wowed with her 21.22, not that far off Farida's 21.11 from last NCs! Nono only 0.04 off her 2017 NCAA time too!

Bears' 200 MR was blazing fast, but still has some upside. Ali is already faster than both Furdettes (Williams and Zhao). Add Ali and move Abbey to the anchor for a new NCAA record. Curious if Sophie can qualify in the 100 Back.

Assuming Abbey can split a 20.9 ~ish anchor leg, moving Ali to the anchor legs and using the splits from the relay today...it would equal a 1:33.98!

    Thleen: 23.59
    Ali: 26.75
    Noemie: 22.74
    Abbey: 20.9

Also - correction...Williams split a 26.73, so not quite there, but a very bright future! #GoBears!

    Robin: 1:43.38
    Thleen: 1:43.29
    Katie: 1:43.29
    Amy: 1:42.66

    Stanford splits:
    Drabot: 1:45.88
    Eastin: 1:42.77
    Forde: 1:44.00
    Ledecky: 1:41.21

Our 'B' relay of Chenoa (1:47.21), Keeks (1:45.42), Sarah (1:44.55), and Jenna (1:47.44) was faster than LSJU's 'B' relay of Katie Glavinovich (1:47.79), Lauren Pitzer (1:44.81), Erin Voss (1:45.81), and Megan Byrnes (1:47.07) too!

Froski Robin's bringing her SCY A game, yayay...faster than even Thleen & Katie when taking into account her start! Freshie Sarah D also put up a very nice 1:44.55 split on the B relay.

Billy again showing absolutely no bloody fear against Manuel in the sprint anchor earlier, and this time round with Ledecky trying in vain to run her down!!!

Didn't hurt that Drabot seemed to be experiencing some problems as the furdette's leadoff leg.

Bears are 2 for 2: not only top times in the PAC, but also nation leading. Amy instead of Abbey gives Teri maximum flexibility.

    PAC-12 CHAMPS TIMES 2

Cal won the 200 medley relay with a team of Amy Bilquist, Noemie Thomas, Kathleen Baker and Abbey Weitzeil.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. Second-ranked Cal got the Pac-12 Championships off to a flying start, winning the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard free relay on the opening night of the four-day meet.

The Golden Bears posted best-in-the-nation times in both events and set a Pac-12 meet record in the 200 medley relay. As a result, Cal has 128 points through two races, with Stanford second at 112 and USC third at 108.

The Bears led from the start in the 200 medley relay with Kathleen Baker putting Cal in front after her backstroke leg. Cal continued to extend its advantage over runner-up Stanford through Abbey Weitzeil's breaststroke and Noemie Thomas' butterfly. Amy Bilquist reached the wall in 1:34.13, with the Cardinal right behind in 1:34.79.

The time was just off the NCAA mark of 1:34.10 set by Cal at last year's meet when the Bears captured the national championship.

"It feels really good. We up here to race and have fun," Weitzeil told the Pac-12 Network following the race. "Leading off with a win is always fun. Keeping the energy up and keeping the ball rolling is really what we need as a team."

A few minutes later, the Bears swam to victory in the 800 free relay. Robin Neumann led off in 1:43.38 on her opening leg, before handing off to Baker and then Katie McLaughlin, who edged Cal to the front through 600 yards. Bilquist, again on anchor, closed out the relay in 6:52.62, as she held off a fast-charging Katie Ledecky of Stanford, who touched in 6:53.86.

Action returns to the King County Aquatics Center Thursday with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. The championship continues through Saturday night.

My first initial reaction to all of this first day success was, "OMG, we are peaking too soon!". But there is no way Teri is letting our super stars taper for Pac 12s. The one split that stands out for me is Robin's 1:43.38 leadoff! Dang, I didn't know she had that in her. She is definitely qualifying for NCAAs now. And guys, let's not mess with the order of the 200 medley. Abbey stays at breast and Amy anchors. I don't want the pressure of the limelight put on the freshman, Ali, but let's get her qualified for the big show though. Plus, as she just showed by holding off two Olympians, Amy is the best closer in any race!!!

Robin almost certainly punched her NCAA ticket last night with her lead off leg on the 800 Free Relay.

Bears are in really good shape on relays right now with:

    Abbey
    Amy
    Thleen
    McL
    Maddie
    Nono
    Robin
    Sarah
    Keeks

Ideally will also get Ali and Val qualified. Not all will swim in finals or even prelims, but would give Teri all kinds of options if somebody gets sick or injured. Also builds for the future. Unreal that Bears can lose Farida and still come back this season poised to break their own NCAA 200MR record. Lose Nono after this season, but can theoretically add McL/Maddie/Cassidy/Elise and Ali into the mix and be back on top next season too.

Ali and Maija are agonizingly close to invites (~1:01.3) in the 100 Breast. Would be great for the future (Ali) and a great reward for perseverance (Maija) for the program. Likely need Ali more on the 400MR than the 200MR.

PAC or NCAA titles withstanding, love the mix in and out of the pool because of how well they represent our beloved University.

Val getting close to an invite in the 50. Probably needs to drop 0.1 to be in safely. Finals, two shots in the 100, put her on the front of the 200 Free Relay, and then time trials. Plenty of opportunities, but ideally gets it done today.

Chenoa's close in the 500. Probably needs to drop 0.7. McL's time wasn't great, but she's already in.

Thought Becca Mann was a can't miss recruit. May not qualify via the 500. 'SC distance has fallen off.

Why is Eastin swimming the 500 Free instead of the 200IM? If you thought Katie's swim was bad, check out Hannah Cox. Almost a 10 second difference from her seed time.
