TOP NCAA WOMEN'S SWIMMING RECRUITS OF THE PAST DECADE

TOP 50 NCAA WOMEN'S SWIMMING RECRUITS, HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES OF 2013-2022

3. Missy Franklin (CO), Class of 2013 (#1) - Cal Golden Bears
Our first-ever #1-ranked recruit still holds up almost a decade later. Who remembered how good of a 400 IMer Franklin was out of high school? Not us. By spring of her junior year, though, Franklin was already a three-time long course world champ and short course world record-holder. 59.1/2:05.1 backstroke times and 25.2/53.6/1:55.0 freestyles showed her obvious upside.

10. Abbey Weitzeil (CA), Class of 2015 (#2) - Cal Golden Bears
Long course 25.2/55.3 also helps, but Weitzeil didn't really blow up until her senior year (21.4/46.2 short course).

11. Kathleen Baker (NC), Class of 2015 (#3) - Cal Golden Bears
Supremely versatile, Baker was also already 1:00.6 and 2:10 in backstroke by spring of her junior year.

14. Isabelle Stadden (MN), Class of 2020 (#4) - Cal Golden Bears

19. Izzy Ivey (FL), Class of 2019 (#1) - Cal Golden Bears
Ivey entered the NCAA a semester earlier than the rest of her class, but as a junior, she was our #1 recruit in the class of 2019.

24. Katie McLaughlin (CA), Class of 2015 (#4) - Cal Golden Bears
McLaughlin was already 59.0 and 2:08.7 in long course fly, too.

45. Amy Bilquist (IN), Class of 2015 (#5) - Cal Golden Bears

Due to her impending superstar status (esp if RS blows up @ Tokyo!), there might be a few concerns whether Regan would end up sticking with her full 4 years of collegiate eligibility as the financial lure of the professional route will surely beckon to her sooner than later!

It looks like Smith can earn money and swim ncaa all 4 years if she wants to.

WORLD RECORD HOLDER REGAN SMITH STILL SET FOR FALL 2020 STANFORD ENROLLMENT

American star Regan Smith is still planning to enroll at Stanford for the upcoming school year despite the Olympic postponement, she told SwimSwam.

Since her summer 2019 breakout, amid NCAA amateurism discussions, Smith has been touted as an obvious benefactor should the association allow student-athletes to profit from their performances.

Last week, the NCAA announced it would move to "modernize" its policies by the 2021-22 school year by allowing student-athletes to earn compensation based on their names, images, and likenesses (including from social media, personal businesses and personal appearances, provided they fall under a set of guiding principles established by the board). While that policy wouldn't apply to prize money as of now, it could lead to longer college careers for athletes like Smith who might otherwise turn pro early.

Smith has long maintained that she values the college experience over the ability to earn money in the immediate future, but with the news, says she would be excited to have both.

Top 4 hasn't been published yet, but it's looking like #3 will be between our Bears and the Horns I reckon (my heart says Cal ...but my head's leaning towards Texas ).

Furdettes are the likely favourites to claim Swimswam's #1 ranking for the 2020 recruiting class ~smh~, albeit surely followed very closely by those fast rising Hoos.

However things are presently looking quite dodgy for a full, regular season of winter sports:
COVID-19 will keep Cal from "fully re-opening" in the fall and may block 2020 season, particularly non-conference games

  • UPDATES:

The UC system has yet to release an official decision, but a spokesman told CBS2 its 10 campuses were unlikely to fully reopen this fall.
This may add some uncertainty to Emily Gantriis' attendance this coming semester, on top of the student visa/entry issues potentially facing our Danish sprinter in the current Coronavirus & immigration climate...

Top 4 has now been published!

RANKING THE 2020 WOMEN'S NCAA RECRUITING CLASSES: #1-4

#1: STANFORD CARDINAL

#2: VIRGINIA CAVALIERS

#3: TEXAS LONGHORNS

#4: CAL GOLDEN BEARS
Cal has a great outgoing backstroke group (Keaton Blovad, Courtney Mykkanen) and luckily for them, the national recruiting class is one of the strongest backstroke fields in years. Cal got the third-best backstroke recruit, and she's still a legitimate All-American contender in both distances as a freshman. Isabelle Stadden is 51.2/1:50.3 out of high school. The Minnesota Aquajet follows in the footsteps of another former Aquajet-to-Cal backstroker, one Rachel Bootsma.

Denmark's Emily Gantriis helps cover for Cal's other big graduation: star sprinter Abbey Weitzeil. Gantriis is 25.4 and 55.6 in long course freestyle, even swimming up to 2:01 in the 200 free. That should make her an instant relay swimmer across all three relay distances.

Nicole Oliva was a really intriguing prospect - she's a national teamer for the Philippines, but attended high school in the U.S. Oliva has outstanding freestyle range (16:28/4:42/1:46.3 are her best times, but she's also 23.6/49.9 in the sprints) and should be an effective college swimmer.

Tea Laughlin adds 52.5/1:55.9 backstroke speed to help fill in depth behind Stadden. Meanwhile Cal got two California-based divers and 23.3/50.6 freestyler Mara Allen for a very California-based class.
