Jade and Faith visited 'SC in July 2017, and are both mostly looking at west coast schools (Cal, USC, ASU, LSJU) Doubt either are going to go to LSJU, but USC is defintely a contender. Jade's probably more likely to come to Cal than Faith, but don't forget that they can both just go to UofT and go pro at the same time.

Surprised to not see Faith Knelson there to add to USC's massive breaststroke group, but did see her at Zona earlier this week...
Faith (listed on CS as 2019) is checking out the other AZ school this weekend, along with several 2020 recruits
At Georgia this weekend, possibly with #16 Grace Cooper & 2019 recruit Mady Bragg (#288 Nat, #7 GA), Bragg having previously visited LSU & Bama.

Claire Donan (#34 Nat), seen visiting Kentucky with Caroline Sumner.

Yeah, it's a way earlier, but the recruiting landscape has changed drastically in a shorter period of time, so we'll have to change as well!

Here's a rough overview of some recruits that we may be targeting for this recruiting season.

- #5 Kaitlyn Dobler: breast (59.1/2:11.4) and sprint free (22.3/49.5), from Oregon (I think Keaton is also from Oregon?) Dropped 3 seconds in a year in the breaststroke, and that 50 free is one of the best in the class, and is better than many of the sprint specialists. Poses as 50 free and 100/200 breast swimmer at NCAA's.

#5 Kaitlyn Doble -> Trojans

-------

Kaitlyn: "I'm very excited to announce my verbal commitment to University of Southern California. I love the team atmosphere and the amazing coaches, and it is the best place for me to get an engineering degree and continue my athletic career. I'm really looking forward to spending four years at USC. FIGHT ON!!"

UVA hosting their second recruiting trip this weekend, this time with 2020 recruits. Not exactly quite sure who is there yet, but definitely #17 Anna Keating, #20 Abby Harter, #2 Alex Walsh, #4 Olivia Bray, #12 Tristen Ulett, #18 Lillie Nordmann, and HM Ella Ristic.

Also some possibilities based on IG follows: Colby Hurt (#45 Nat, #4 VA), #9 Maxine Parker, Samantha Pearson (#30 Nat, #1 CA), Emma Weyant (#11 Nat, #1 FL).

Well, appears that the Hoos have reeled in their 1st 2020 verbal, judging by DeSorbo & co.'s in-your-face-as-usual post lol:

If I had to make a wild guess in the dark, my first stab would be Anna Keating...perhaps?? (assuming it's a female commit)

2019 & 2020 recruits taking their official trip to the Farm this weekend:

My rough guess (left to right, viewer perspective) => Emma Wheal (#42 Nat, #4 TX) (2019) ?, #7 Alexandra Crisera (2019), Kira Crage (#146 Nat, #22 CA) (2019), Lillie Nordmann (#10 Nat, #2 TX) (2020), #3 Katharine Berkoff (2019), #1 Regan Smith (2020) & #2 Alex Walsh (2020)

Reports of #1 Regan Smith jetting out last night too, ostensibly on her 2nd recruiting trip... ?

Several possible scenarios for Regs' flight - not necessarily in order of preference or likelihood lol:

1) 'SC visit (since Faith & Sophie are confirmed to be there today)

2) LSJU visit...to confirm her verbal to the Furdettes?! *eek*

btw, #5 recruit Ethan Dang & #2 Destin Lasco, who had both hung out with the Bear Bros a month ago, are presently checking out the country club, er, I mean, the Farm this weekend, along with .and several other top recruits.

3) Another school...

4) ...perhaps, dare we hope, a trip to Cal - if indeed Teri's hosting 2020 prospects this weekend of her induction into the Hall of Fame...

All pure speculation, of course lol

11. Kathryn Ackerman Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics - Grand Haven High School - Grand Haven, MI
Best Times: 400 IM 4:10.20, 200 IM 1:57.92, 100 fly 54.76, 100 back 54.71, 200 back 1:56.36
It seems like the IMers in this class could use a little more development, and are good candidates to rise when we look back on these rankings next year. Ackerman dropped from 4:15 down to 4:10 in the 400 IM over the last year and has the top time in the class. Her third event is still fairly open. Good long course swimmer (2:17/4:49 in the IMs).

Yeah, it's a way earlier, but the recruiting landscape has changed drastically in a shorter period of time, so we'll have to change as well! Here's a rough overview of some recruits that we may be targeting for this recruiting season. In 2020, we're losing Keaton Blovad, Alexa Buckley, Chenoa Devine, Aislinn Light, Maddie Murphy, Courtney Mykkanen, and Abbey Weitzeil.

NEEDS:
- Backstroke (replace the loss of Keaton, Aislinn, Coco, and assuming we don't get Berkoff)
- Sprint Free (Abbey as well as Maddie)
- Sprint Fly (or just fly in general)

Ironically, we aren't low in breaststroke (Ema, Ali, Izzie) or distance (our 2019 distance quartet of Ashlyn, SD3, Rachel, and Anna should be good for duals), but instead, we are low in our typical specialties of sprint free, fly, and back.

TARGETS:

Not to be forgotten, of course (if we don't get Regan), is another Minnesotean, #3 Isabelle Stadden, who has been dropping time like crazy, and boasts times of 51.3 and 1:52.0 in the backstrokes. She doesn't quite have a third event, but based on her 100 IM time, she should be able to improve in the 200 IM.

For sprint free, #8 Quinn Schaedler and #9 Maxine Parker stand out with 50 free times of 22.8 and 22.4, respectively, though Schaedler also boasts a near class best 100 free time of 48.84.

Some Locals:

- HM Ella Ristic: 2017 World Junior Champs team member, with a great 200 free (1:45.6) Also from Irvine Novaquatics and Santa Margarita (Katie McL). Her other times aren't quite at the same level at her 200 free, but she still has two years left to improve them.

Note: The rankings given are their SS rankings in SS's "Way Too Early NCAA Recruit Ranks for 2020", which was posted on April 30, 2018. If they have no SS ranking, I'll use their CS ranking, even if their CS ranking is higher than those with SS rankings.

3. Isabelle Stadden Aquajets Swim Team - Blaine High School - Blaine, MN
Best Times: 100 back - 51.33, 200 back - 1:52.04, 200 IM - 1:59.56, 50 free - 22.96, 100 fly - 54.39
The second Minnesotan in our top 3, Stadden has been surging over the past year or so. Since November, she's dropped her 100 back from 54.8 to 51.3 and her 200 from 1:58.7 to 1:52.0. She doesn't have a stellar third event yet, but keeps dropping in everything seemingly every time she swims she dropped time at Minnesota's high school state meet in November, then added another round of lifetime-bests at Winter Juniors in December, and blew out even those times at NCSAs in March. Stadden is going to need massive drops to rise any higher in this class (she can Minnesota nice-ly thank her state-mate Smith for that), but is tremendous value at #3. She comes from the same club that produced Rachel Bootsma.

8. Quinn Schaedler Austin Swim Club - Austin, TX
Best Times: 200 free - 1:46.02, 100 free - 48.84, 50 free - 22.89
An awesome relay pickup, and the only one inside our top 10 who projects as a pure mid-sprint freestyle type. Very good time progression: her 200 was 1:50.8 until late 2017 when she went 1:47.7. And the 1:46.0 came just two months go. The 100 is even more impressive her lifetime-best was 51.5 last October before a whole slew of time drops. This one is a high-ceiling pick. Schaedler is currently a very good relay piece, but if she drops solid amounts over the next two years, she could be a major difference-maker in all five relays for the right program.

Ella Ristic (Irvine Novaquatics / Santa Margarita Catholic High School / Laguna Niguel, CA) - her 200 free (1:45.76) feels a lot better than any of her times in adjacent events (23.2/49.7//4:48.2), so it's worth keeping an eye on whether she can bring any other events to that level. That 200 free also took place last May in California's high school season when she was a freshman, so she could still improve her sophomore year standing with a drop next month.

Just idly thinking out loud here lol - know that we've naturally been all focussed on the 2020 "big guns" (#1 Regan Smith, #2 Alex Walsh, #3 Isabelle Stadden, #4 Olivia Bray, #6 Phoebe Bacon) on these pages...

But am quite curious how some of you may feel about the (purely hypothetical/speculative ) scenario where Teri was to explore other equally promising options instead (taking into account academics, team & school fit, progression curve & upside etc.), and so head in a rather different direction than perhaps originally expected - such as looking at #8 Quinn Schaedler {#3 TX}, HM Ella Ristic {# 2 CA} & Samantha Pearson {#1 CA}...in addition to #3 Isabelle Stadden {#1 MN}, of course?

Good butterfly improvements have put her in the thick of the class there just needs a blowout swim to separate herself from the field. IMs went backwards a little as a sophomore, but she's not far from being one of the better in the class there too.

    TARGETS:
For fly, VA native #4 Olivia Bray is the NAG record holder in the 100 fly, with 51.48/1:54.2 fly times, as well as a 52.0 100 back. Poses as a 100/200 fly and 100 back scorer, and brings some pretty good mid-distance free times as well to help combat the loss of Maddie.
    swimswam said:

    4. Olivia Bray Virginia Gators - Lord Botetourt School - Roanoke, VA
    Best Times: 100 fly - 51.48, 200 fly - 1:54.21, 100 back - 52.02, 200 back - 1:55.74, 200 free - 1:46.37

Currently the best sprint flyer in the class, Bray is also an impact backstroker for any team that doesn't get one of the top two prospects. Her 100 fly would have made the NCAA's A final last year. The downside with Bray is that her fly and back went pretty far backwards this spring, with her bests coming from March of 2017. There's still plenty of time to turn that around over the next two years, but it is a red flag. On the other hand, Bray went lifetime-bests in her 50 (23.0) and 100 (51.1) frees this spring, so maybe she's developing into a more rounded relay threat. Her 200 free (1:46.3) feels significantly better than those two, so there should be time to drop in the sprints.

"If you're a top-level swimmer, you're committing your junior year," said Doug Fonder, head coach of the Roanoke Gators, the year-around program with which Bray trains.

Bray made her decision Oct. 3, picking the Longhorns over Stanford, Indiana and Virginia. She had wanted to wait until Jan. 1.

"I instantly fell in love with Texas on my recruiting trip," Bray said. "Honestly, I didn't think [a commitment] would happen this early. You feel a little bit rushed, or at least I did.

"That entire process was super stressful for me. Once I decided where I was going to go, the pressure was off of my shoulders and I could breathe again."

Bray's specialties are butterfly, backstroke and the sprint freestyle events.

"She's the fastest 18-and-under butterflyer in America," Fonder said. "She got letters and calls from everybody."

Another top 10 gone. Hard to recruit if we aren't bringing them here for a recruiting trip. Saving for them for the big game?

Seems to be the plan - I guess?? Hopefully there will be a few top student-athletes who are good mutual fits still remaining to woo in a fortnight's time {fingers crossed}, what with the brutally accelerated pace of earlier & earlier recruiting/verbals in the aftermath of those NCAA rule changes... Keep in mind that the window of opportunity for recruiting visits this semester will narrow in the not too distant future - Thanksgiving, Bears away @ Athens for the UGA Invite, Finals 2nd week of Dec, etc.

Hmmm, if Teri were to host #1 Regan or #2 Alex at the Big Game, reckon would be a good test of their loyalties & commitment leans to observe which fb team they are cheering on the hardest when we (hopefully) reclaim the Axe on the 17th lol (with the pair having already taken a trip to the Farm last month)...

Bears do have a dual meet v. the CSCAA #1 ranked Horns @ Legends this coming Sat (hope some of you can make it there!), which could also present an opportunity for some visits. Just thinking out loud tho that visiting this weekend could prove sort of awkward for a top recruit like #3 Isabelle Stadden, since she was a guest @ Austin just last week...

There isn't a home fb match either on the 10th - but then again, don't reckon this constitutes a rigid requirement, esp if multiple recruiting weekends are spread out involving smaller batches of recruits.

Classic example of this - Izzy, Chloe & Miranda Heckman (UT commit) showed up @ Spieker for the dual v. ASU on 19 Jan at the beginning of the year, obviously after the fb season had concluded. Chloe then verballed to Cal 5 days following her visit (24th), with Isabel pledging to the blue & gold a week after her trip (28th)! So these trips can, and do, produce some very tangible results soon afterwards...

Granted there's a very valid counterpoint perspective that "if a recruit commits before even visiting Berkeley, then the chances are they never wanted to come here"...

OTOH, competing programmes may have put a hard deadline on a promising prospect to commit after their early visit to their institution, which can increase our chances of "losing" these recruits before they ever get a chance to discover that they can be a great/better fit with Bears (families pulling the trigger cos of financial & other practical considerations, fearing their offspring may not get "as good" an offer elsewhere since she/he hasn't yet been invited to Cal & presented with an offer, etc etc).

Speaking for just myself lol, would be ever so chuffed about seeing the likes of these swim aces make an appearance on campus in the near future:
    - #3 Isabelle Stadden (academically-inclined, also looks up to Thleen & probably Natalie)
    - #2 Alex Walsh (strong academics tradition @ Harpeth Hall, good friends with Cass & Izzy...heck I may even find it in my heart to magnanimously overlook Alex's massive transgression in making that ill-fated trip to the Farm )
    - #8 Quinn Schaedler
    - Samantha Pearson {#1 CA}

Heck why not throw in "sizzling" #6 Phoebe Bacon as well whilst we're about it, no I'm not being greedy or unrealistic here at all lol

Would also welcome #9 Maxine Parker and/or #16 Grace Cooper since freestyle sprinters are always of great value esp for our programme - though TBH haven't personally come across any overt indicators of either recruit exhibiting a bias in favour of Bears...

Not really expecting the #1 recruit to show up to @ Cal as she has been displaying overt signs of being a v. heavy LSJU lean...but heck, I'd for one would love to recruit Regan Smith, if only to annoy those furdettes (and D Roy haha) who have understandably been very assertive & persistent in their recruiting campaign & focus on reeling in Regan to the Dark Side...

    15. Abby Arens Marlins of Raleigh - Saint Mary's College Prep School - Raleigh, NC
    Best Times: 100 breast 1:00.00, 200 breast 2:10.04, 200 IM 1:59.93, 400 IM 4:15.90
This is a deep class of breaststrokers between 1:00-1:01 and 2:11-2:12, and Arens has risen to the front of that group with solid drops at NCSAs in March. It also doesn't hurt that she's had awesome IM drops in the past year (2:02 to 1:59 in the 200, 4:21 to 4:15 in the 400) to close in on the equally deep IM class.

Was tomorrow/weekend (BG) going to be the biggest recruiting weekend of the year with visits from several '20 swim prospects? If so, hope most/all can make it Dec. 1 instead.

Timing of the rescheduled Big Game unfortunately conflicts with the UGA Fall Invitational - coaches & the swim team (+ the Bear Bros) will all be down @ Athens, Georgia from 29 Nov to 1 Dec...

Hmm looking at the schedule https://calbears.com/schedule.aspx?path=wswim including school finals and holidays, I'm wondering when that type of group visit would now likely occur. Next weekend? Dec.19th? First half of January?

Interestingly enough, there's no #5 Phoebe Bacon, as far as I can tell.
Via Maddie Donohoe (2019 UVA)'s instagram story, Phoebe took a visit to UVA today.
