Bug's 49.97 is a new Cal record, taking down Natalie's 50.01 from 2002!!! Wow!!

Izzy's 50.82 lowers her lifetime best of 51.15 from 2019 Pac-12s

A bit much to expect Ema to lower her Cal all-time #1 swim from prelims in the 100 Breast, but I for one am extremely happy & grateful for her 11 points contribtuion to the team title race for Bears!

Tiger lilly wins 100 br fourth yr in a row breaking the NCAA mark again. Not a good start for Ema which attributed to her 8th place but under under 1 minute again. Idiot announcer again "no furds or Cal in this race". Open your eyes.

O
n a non-partisan note, congrats to Trojanette Hansson for lowering her own NCAA record in the 100 Fly, and to IU's Lilly King for breaking her own NCAA & American record again in the 100 Breast...

Missy's 200 Free record remains intact.

Yayay, Billy - new PB of 50.05 to claim runne rup in the 100 Back A final - 4th best in school history, only Bootsie, Natalie & Thleen have been faster. Of equal significance, easily held off LSJU's Ruck for important points!

Izzy also crushed her personal record from this morning, from 50.88 down to 50.42. for a magnificent 4th position.

Cheers also to Beata & Yuri for that amazing NCAA & American record in the process - 49.18, wheeee!

How time flies for Lilly King. Remember her winning as a freshmen and we were trying to get her to transfer here. Her father actually commented on our thread, that he was flattered but Lilly was happy in Indiana. Classy father.

Tomorrow will be a strong day for the furds (lots of depth )and maybe our weakest.

Furd's strength - 200Bk, 200BS, 200fly,1650, & diving

CAL's strength -100FR, 400FR

I think we need a major stumble for the furds i.e. cramps(leg) or DQ for them to lose IMO.

Cal, Stanford to Battle for Women's NCAA Swimming Title on Final Day

by DAVID RIEDER

The Stanford women will walk through the doors of the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center Saturday morning at the women's NCAA swimming championships in an unusual spot - second place.

This year, Stanford did win the 800 free relay, but since then, their cross-bay rival California Golden Bears have been the meet's dominant squad.

Even with Stanford's massive losses from last season - Ledecky, Manuel, Ally Howe and Janet Hu key among them - few saw any legitimate threat to Stanford in 2019. Cal, which finished second each of the last two years, lost superstar Kathleen Baker to the professional ranks, and despite Cal sweeping all five relays at this year's Pac-12 championships, Stanford finished 423 points ahead of the Bears in the team standings.

But over the course of Thursday and Friday action in Austin, Cal has been the dominant team, and it hasn't been particularly close.

Abbey Weitzeil has reached and surpassed her best times from high school, and she has provided the decisive anchor leg in both Cal relay wins, including a 20.49 split in the 200 free relay and then a 20.45 in the 200 medley relay.

Weitzeil's 50 free American record was impressive, but more significant was qualifying for the A-final in the 200 free - an event where she finished 18th as a freshman and scratched as a sophomore. Weitzeil ended up finishing fourth in the final.

Katie McLaughlin has been excellent on relays and in qualifying for the 100 fly and 200 free finals back to back, and so has her fellow senior Amy Bilquist, who finished sixth in the 50 free and second in the 100 back after qualifying for just one A-final last year and none the year before.

But Weitzeil, McLaughlin and Bilquist were known factors beforehand. The X-factors in this Cal surge have been a pair of freshman, Izzy Ivey and Ema Rajic.

Ivey, of course, is not a new face to the national swimming scene, having represented the U.S. internationally with the National Junior Team, and she arrived at Cal midyear. She arrived in Austin seeded 10th in the 200 IM, eighth in the 100 fly and 44th in the 100 back. She ended up finishing ninth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 back.

Yes, fourth. After being seeded 44th. Ivey capped off Cal's massive eight-up individual performance Friday morning with a 50.88 in the 100 back, annihilating her previous lifetime best of 52.19. And then in finals, just 40 minutes after finishing sixth in the 100 fly, Ivey took fourth in the 100 back, dropping another four tenths with a 50.42. Later that evening, she filled in for Bilquist leading off Cal's 200 medley relay, which went on to finish second.

Rajic, meanwhile, came to Cal from Urbana, Ill., having never broken 1:00 in the 100 breast. Seeded 26th in the 100 breast entering the meet at 59.68, Rajic qualified for the A-final and finished eighth after swimming a time of 58.97 in prelims. Her 58.53 split on Cal's 400 medley relay gave McLaughlin and Weitzeil a chance on the last two legs.

The Bears now sit at 328 points, 28.5 ahead of second-place Stanford.

And yet, despite all that has swung this meet in Cal's favor, Stanford still has a great chance to end up national champions again. Psych sheet projections for Saturday show the Cardinal out-scoring the Bears by 70 points.

Key to that run will be Ruck and Lucie Nordmann in the 200 back, where both are seeded in the top-five, and the trio of Eastin, Drabot and Forde in the 200 fly.

But Cal has some room to improve based on the psych sheet. Swimmers in position to outscore their projections include Keaton Blovad in the 200 back, Robin Neumann in the 100 free, Rajic in the 200 breast and McLaughlin in the 200 fly. Friday set up to be Cal's best day, but it will take another big morning performance to hold off Stanford.

But for the first time in three years, the Stanford women will have work to do Saturday to secure a championship, and the Cal women will have a chance. On Saturday, expect plenty of drama in the battle for the NCAA title.

2019 NCAA WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 3 SCORING SUMMARY

BY ANDREW MERING

Day 3 saw Cal take a 28.5 point lead over Stanford. The Bears scored 155 points, 33.5 more than their seeded total of 121.5. Stanford scored 126. 3 of those points were from diving events. The rest were from swimming. The 123 swimming points were an improvement of 18.5 on the psych sheet. All told, Cal made up 12 points vs the pre meet projections today.

Adding tomorrow's projected scores to today's totals, Stanford has 459 and Cal has 417. The meet is Stanford's to lose, but they have to swim well and back up their seeds. Stanford have 19 individual swims tomorrow to Cal's 11. Stanford have a top 5 seed in every event but the 100. Cal's only top 5 seeds are in the 100. Stanford have 6 top 5 seeds tomorrow. Cal have 2.

Cal's 33.5 points gained over the psych sheet were the most of any team.

2019 W. NCAAS: HOW DID DOUBLE-EVENT FINALISTS FAIR ON NIGHT 3?

Cal mid-year addition Izzy Ivey was among the five swimmers to final in two individual events Friday night. Current photo via Jack Spitser/Spitser Photography

BY TORREY HART

Five swimmers in total who swam two individual events made either an A- or B-final in both Friday night. The most common double, unsurprisingly, is the 100 fly and 100 back. Auburn's Aly Tetzloff, Cal's Izzy Ivey, and Michigan's Maggie MacNeil went 100 fly/100 back, and all swam on a relay, while Cal's Katie McLaughlin went 200 free/100fly and Stanford's Taylor Ruck 200 free/100 back.

In particular, both first-years in the group had monster days. Cal's mid-year addition Izzy Ivey, who hadn't been under :52 before starting this semester, went 50.88 in prelims and 50.42 in finals for fourth place overall in the 100 back. She also went a best time by .33 in the 100 fly.

Just catching up tonight, but wow... what another fantastic night (and day) of swims for all Bears who competed today!
- So happy for Katie to grab third place in the 100 fly with a new PB, a sub-50 swim, and a school record of her own (well, well, well deserved). Bug completed her double with the valiant 3-bear effort in the 200 free, and
- I'm so impressed with Izzy's swims this meet, notably her 100 fly-100 back swims. Thought that she might have been decently rested for Pac-12s, given such a short training period with Cal and lack of meets over an abbreviated season, but incredible performance on her behalf (especially given the difficulties of adjusting to college as a whole) and kudos to the brilliant coaching staff of course!
- And Billy with her fantastic 50.05. Not to mention the swims put up by Keeks and Maddie for valuable B-final points as well, and any other swims I may be overlooking in my awe... Can't believe the Bears put up a whopping 10 finals swims tonight! Phew.

On a more somber note, great medley silver medal to finish tonight, but really hoping Abbey is okay. Of course want the team to end out their hard work and superb efforts with a bang, but all in safety, especially given Abbey's string of spectacular performances and upcoming Team USA swims (Worlds, etc.).

Go Bears! Truly amazed.

Gutty swim by Abbey. Qualified 4th, Billy 6th, Robin 16. Furdette AF qualified 15th, Pitzer 17th, Maddie 34th.

Cassidy makes B final!!. Katie into A final but 2 furds 2U/1D
    Quote:

Cal freshman Cassidy Bayer hit a stall in this event over the past few seasons, but had a breakthrough to win heat 4. Bayer came through with a 1:55.35, which is her fastest swim in the event since 2016. That's also under 2 tenths shy of her lifetime best. Bayer will compete in the B final tonight.

    Day 4 up/down

    Cal 3/3

    furds 5/5

Cal has no platform divers & Furds I believe have 3 and then there is the dreaded 1650 where furds have 3 seeded in the top 16 and we have nada. The finale will be the 400Fr and assuming Abbey is would be a push with the furdettes in this event. It will be tough for us to tonight we know that the "Bears will not die"
