#20 HANK RIVERS HANDS VERBAL COMMITMENT TO CAL FOR 2022-23

TOP 20 NCAA SWIMMING RECRUITS IN THE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2022

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Zachary Tan (Previous Rank: #1) - DART Swimming - Davis, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**

Best Times: 400 IM - 3:48.84, 200 IM - 1:47.23, 200 breast - 1:58.17, 100 breast - 55.43, 200 back - 1:46.56, 100 back - 49.74

Tan was our #1 overall recruit a year ago, and remains an extremely versatile and impactful talent. His drop in the rankings is less an indictment of his junior year as a testament to just how many other swimmers had massive time drops to move into the top 20. Tan didn't see a lot of personal-bests in short course or long course as a junior, but he's also from California, which was locked down about as much as any state during the pandemic. 3:48.8 in the 400 IM still carries tremendous weight, and Tan is really, really good through all four strokes. He's 2:03/4:25 in the long course IMs and 1:04/2:16 in the long course breaststroke, and a couple of big swims this summer would probably be enough to vault him right back into top 20 consideration.

BEST OF THE REST

YNATS CHAMPION JACK ALEXY, #5 IN 2021, MAKES VERBAL COMMITMENT TO CAL

JACK ALEXY POPS 22.67/49.31 FREESTYLES IN LONG COURSE; ADDS NEW WAVE II CUT

Jack Alexy of Greater Somerset County YMCA swam to two new best times during the May 813 Meet in St. Petersburg, improving on his 50 enough to earn him his second Wave II Trials cut. Prior to the start of the meet, Alexy had already qualified for three events at Trials, including the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 back. His 100 free, however, was his only Wave II cut.

At the TYR 18&U Spring Cup in early May, Alexy swam his entry time of 22.82 in the 50 free. It was the first 50 free LCM time he had posted since the 2019 Phillips 66 Summer National Championships, where he swam a 22.93. On Friday, Alexy swam the 50 free again, finishing in a 22.67 and dipping under the Wave II Trials standard of 22.71. His time would put him at 5th in the nation for the 17-18 age group.

I'm pretty sure he'll enjoy the Bay Area winters over Regina.

WAY TOO EARLY RECRUIT RANKS: BOYS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023

THIS CLASS
  • Deep sprint class could be a game-changer for relays
  • Also deep in fly/back, but mostly still in development
  • Thin IM & breaststroke groups
  • Big dropoff after top few 200/500 guys

There's no clear-cut #1 sprinter in this class, but as a whole, sprinters might be the strength of this class. There's a good number of 20-point/44-point type guys, and a deep group just outside of our top 20 in the 21./45./1:39. range. The sprints usually reward size and strength, and we usually expect to see more improvements as swimmers move from high school sophomores towards college freshmen. So with this group being as deep as it is, the NCAA could be getting an all-around relay infusion, if the improvement curves hit for most of these guys.

The butterfly and backstroke groups are also pretty deep. They've got a little more definition at the top, with a few 46/47 types, and then a big dropoff to the high 48s and 49s. There aren't a ton of two-distance standouts in either fly or back yet, but that's something that probably comes along with more racing opportunities.

Overall, it's a very thin IM group. The top time in the class is better in both IMs than last year's sophomores, but the depth really drops off, and the IMs aren't at the levels of the classes of 2021 or 2020 as sophomores. Breaststroke is also relatively thin, though there's a decent amount of 54-second guys working on developing 200 speed.

Once you get beyond the top 10 or so, there's a big dropoff in the 200/500 frees, too, so the top few swimmers in those events will be especially valuable for the time being.

CAL MEN PICK UP ALABAMA ALL-AMERICA TRANSFER LIAM BELL

Bell heads to Cal as a top breaststroker for the team. During the 2020-2021 season, he would have been the team's second-fastest in the 100 breast and their third-fastest in the 200. Rising senior Reece Whitley was their fastest in both events last season and currently holds the school's records in each race. Bell and Whitley will train and compete together for at least one year, unless Whitley decides to exercise his option for a 5th season.
